General Solutions of the Second-Kind Abel Equation

The general solutions with free variable to the second-kind Abel equation, a nonlinear ordinary differential equation that has remained unsolved for nearly two centuries, are presented for the first time by using elementary quadrature method.

General Solutions of the Abel Differential Equations

The Abel differential equations play a significant role in various fields of mathematics and applied sciences and are classified into two types: the first kind and the second kind. A novel derivative condition for the general solution of first-kind Abel equation is introduced. Based on this condition, the general solutions to the first-kind Abel equation with a zero free term are obtained, which in turn enables the derivation of the general solutions to the second-kind Abel equation, and meanwhile, a pair of entangled functions is discovered. These results can be extended to the Lienard equation.

An analytical approximation of the evolution of the primordial curvature perturbation in the ultraslow-roll inflation

Cosmic inflation can enter an ultraslow-roll (USR) stage, if there is a plateau on the inflaton potential. During this stage, the primordial curvature perturbation ${\mathcal R}_k$ and its power spectrum ${\mathcal P}_{\mathcal R}$ can be remarkably enhanced on small scales. In this work, an analytical approximation is provided to systematically study the evolution of ${\mathcal R}_k$ in the USR inflation. We first discuss the asymptotic solutions of the moduli and arguments of ${\mathcal R}_k$ and its time derivative ${\mathcal R}_{k,N}$ on the sub- and super-horizon scales separately and find that all these solutions have simple exponential forms. Then, ${\mathcal R}_k$ on five typical scales are investigated in order. Our analytical approximation predicts that ${\mathcal R}_k$ first revolves around the origin in the complex plane, but if it crosses the horizon around the start of the USR stage, there appears a subsequent linear evolution towards or away from the origin. This behavior naturally explains the shape of ${\mathcal P}_{\mathcal R}$ from the sharp dip to the peak and matches the numerical results perfectly. Moreover, the minimum of ${\mathcal P}_{\mathcal R}$ is exactly proved to be nonvanishing. Our analytical approximation will help the model building in primordial black hole and gravitational wave physics.

Primordial black holes and scalar-induced gravitational waves from the perturbations on the inflaton potential in peak theory

A perturbation on the background inflaton potential can lead inflation into the ultraslow-roll stage and can thus remarkably enhance the power spectrum ${\cal P}_{\cal R}(k)$ of the primordial curvature perturbation on small scales. Such an enhanced ${\cal P}_{\cal R}(k)$ will result in primordial black holes (PBHs), contributing a significant fraction of dark matter, and will simultaneously generate sizable scalar-induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) as a secondorder effect. In this work, we calculate the PBH abundances $f_{\rm PBH}(M)$ and SIGW spectra $Ω_{\rm GW}(f)$ in peak theory. We obtain the PBHs with desirable abundances in one or two typical mass windows at $10^{-17}\, M_\odot$, $10^{-13}\, M_\odot$, and $30\, M_\odot$, respectively. At the same time, the relevant SIGWs are expected to be observed by the next-generation gravitational wave detectors, without spoiling the current constraint. Especially, the SIGW associated with the PBH of $30\, M_\odot$ can also interpret the potential isotropic stochastic gravitational wave background from the NANOGrav 12.5-year dataset.
