Phase diagram and critical exponents of a Potts gauge glass

The two-dimensional q-state Potts model is subjected to a Z_q symmetric disorder that allows for the existence of a Nishimori line. At q=2, this model coincides with the +/- J random-bond Ising model. For q>2, apart from the usual pure and zero-temperature fixed points, the ferro/paramagnetic phase boundary is controlled by two critical fixed points: a weak disorder point, whose universality class is that of the ferromagnetic bond-disordered Potts model, and a strong disorder point which generalizes the usual Nishimori point. We numerically study the case q=3, tracing out the phase diagram and precisely determining the critical exponents. The universality class of the Nishimori point is inconsistent with percolation on Potts clusters.

Classification of Conformal Field Theories Based on Coulomb gases. Application to Loop Models

We present a method for classifying conformal field theories based on Coulomb gases (bosonic free-field construction). Given a particular geometric configuration of the screening charges, we give necessary conditions for the existence of degenerate representations and for the closure of the vertex-operator algebra. The resulting classification contains, but is more general than, the standard one based on classical Lie algebras. We then apply the method to the Coulomb gas theory for the two-flavoured loop model of Jacobsen and Kondev. The purpose of the study is to clarify the relation between Coulomb gas models and conformal field theories with extended symmetries.

Unusual corrections to scaling in the 3-state Potts antiferromagnet on a square lattice

At zero temperature, the 3-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on a square lattice maps exactly onto a point of the 6-vertex model whose long-distance behavior is equivalent to that of a free scalar boson. We point out that at nonzero temperature there are two distinct types of excitation: vortices, which are relevant with renormalization-group eigenvalue 1/2; and non-vortex unsatisfied bonds, which are strictly marginal and serve only to renormalize the stiffness coefficient of the underlying free boson. Together these excitations lead to an unusual form for the corrections to scaling: for example, the correlation length diverges as β\equiv J/kT \to \infty according to ξ\sim A e^{2β} (1 + bβe^{-β} + ...), where b is a nonuniversal constant that may nevertheless be determined independently. A similar result holds for the staggered susceptibility. These results are shown to be consistent with the anomalous behavior found in the Monte Carlo simulations of Ferreira and Sokal.

Duality relations for M coupled Potts models

We establish explicit duality transformations for systems of M q-state Potts models coupled through their local energy density, generalising known results for M=1,2,3. The M-dimensional space of coupling constants contains a selfdual sub-manifold of dimension D_M = [M/2]. For the case M=4, the variation of the effective central charge along the selfdual surface is investigated by numerical transfer matrix techniques. Evidence is given for the existence of a family of critical points, corresponding to conformal field theories with an extended S_M symmetry algebra.

Exact Meander Asymptotics: a Numerical Check

This note addresses the meander enumeration problem: "Count all topologically inequivalent configurations of a closed planar non self-intersecting curve crossing a line through a given number of points". We review a description of meanders introduced recently in terms of the coupling to gravity of a two-flavored fully-packed loop model. The subsequent analytic predictions for various meandric configuration exponents are checked against exact enumeration, using a transfer matrix method, with an excellent agreement.

Multiscaling of energy correlations in the random-bond Potts model

We numerically calculate the exponent for the disorder averaged and fixed-sample decay of the energy-energy correlator in the q-state random-bond Potts model. Our results are in good agreement with a two-loop expansion (cond-mat/9910181) around q=2 recently found from perturbative renormalisation group techniques, fulfill the correlation length bound ν>= 2/d, and give further evidence against replica symmetry breaking in this class of models.

Large-q asymptotics of the random bond Potts model

We numerically examine the large-q asymptotics of the q-state random bond Potts model. Special attention is paid to the parametrisation of the critical line, which is determined by combining the loop representation of the transfer matrix with Zamolodchikov's c-theorem. Asymptotically the central charge seems to behave like c(q) = 1/2 log_2(q) + O(1). Very accurate values of the bulk magnetic exponent x_1 are then extracted by performing Monte Carlo simulations directly at the critical point. As q -> infinity, these seem to tend to a non-trivial limit, x_1 -> 0.192 +- 0.002.

Lyapounov exponent and density of states of a one-dimensional non-Hermitian Schroedinger equation

We calculate, using numerical methods, the Lyapounov exponent gamma(E) and the density of states rho(E) at energy E of a one-dimensional non-Hermitian Schroedinger equation with off-diagonal disorder. For the particular case we consider, both gamma(E) and rho(E) depend only on the modulus of E. We find a pronounced maximum of rho(|E|) at energy E=2/sqrt(3), which seems to be linked to the fixed point structure of an associated random map. We show how the density of states rho(E) can be expanded in powers of E. We find rho(|E|) = 1/pi^2 + 4/(3 pi^3) |E|^2 + ... This expansion, which seems to be asymptotic, can be carried out to an arbitrarily high order.

Coupled Potts models: Self-duality and fixed point structure

We consider q-state Potts models coupled by their energy operators. Restricting our study to self-dual couplings, numerical simulations demonstrate the existence of non-trivial fixed points for 2 <= q <= 4. These fixed points were first predicted by perturbative renormalisation group calculations. Accurate values for the central charge and the multiscaling exponents of the spin and energy operators are calculated using a series of novel transfer matrix algorithms employing clusters and loops. These results compare well with those of the perturbative expansion, in the range of parameter values where the latter is valid. The criticality of the fixed-point models is independently verified by examining higher eigenvalues in the even sector, and by demonstrating the existence of scaling laws from Monte Carlo simulations. This might be a first step towards the identification of the conformal field theories describing the critical behaviour of this class of models.

Finite average lengths in critical loop models

A relation between the average length of loops and their free energy is obtained for a variety of O(n)-type models on two-dimensional lattices, by extending to finite temperatures a calculation due to Kast. We show that the (number) averaged loop length L stays finite for all non-zero fugacities n, and in particular it does not diverge upon entering the critical regime n -> 2+. Fully packed loop (FPL) models with n=2 seem to obey the simple relation L = 3 L_min, where L_min is the smallest loop length allowed by the underlying lattice. We demonstrate this analytically for the FPL model on the honeycomb lattice and for the 4-state Potts model on the square lattice, and based on numerical estimates obtained from a transfer matrix method we conjecture that this is also true for the two-flavour FPL model on the square lattice. We present in addition numerical results for the average loop length on the three critical branches (compact, dense and dilute) of the O(n) model on the honeycomb lattice, and discuss the limit n -> 0. Contact is made with the predictions for the distribution of loop lengths obtained by conformal invariance methods.

On the universality of compact polymers

Fully packed loop models on the square and the honeycomb lattice constitute new classes of critical behaviour, distinct from those of the low-temperature O(n) model. A simple symmetry argument suggests that such compact phases are only possible when the underlying lattice is bipartite. Motivated by the hope of identifying further compact universality classes we therefore study the fully packed loop model on the square-octagon lattice. Surprisingly, this model is only critical for loop weights n < 1.88, and its scaling limit coincides with the dense phase of the O(n) model. For n=2 it is exactly equivalent to the selfdual 9-state Potts model. These analytical predictions are confirmed by numerical transfer matrix results. Our conclusions extend to a large class of bipartite decorated lattices.

Transition from the compact to the dense phase of two-dimensional polymers

We present a unifying picture of the compact, dense and dilute phases of two-dimensional polymers. The lattice dependence of the scaling exponents for compact polymers is reconciled with their universality in the dense and dilute case. In particular, we show that violations of the fully-packing constraint in the compact phase can be interpreted as magnetic screening in the associated Coulomb gas, which induces a flow to either the dense or the dilute phase. When more than one flavour of polymers is present the flow away from the compact phase leads to a decoupling of the flavours, and the central charge decreases by an integer. If charge asymmetry develops the polymer flavours may independently flow to either of the two non-compact phases.

Field theory of compact polymers on the square lattice

Exact results for conformational statistics of compact polymers are derived from the two-flavour fully packed loop model on the square lattice. This loop model exhibits a two-dimensional manifold of critical fixed points each one characterised by an infinite set of geometrical scaling dimensions. We calculate these dimensions exactly by mapping the loop model to an interface model whose scaling limit is described by a Liouville field theory. The formulae for the central charge and the first few scaling dimensions are compared to numerical transfer matrix results and excellent agreement is found. Compact polymers are identified with a particular point in the phase diagram of the loop model, and the non-mean field value of the conformational exponent γ= 117/112 is calculated for the first time. Interacting compact polymers are described by a line of fixed points along which γvaries continuously.

Critical Behaviour of Random Bond Potts Models: A Transfer Matrix Study

We study the two-dimensional Potts model on the square lattice in the presence of quenched random-bond impurities. For q>4 the first-order transitions of the pure model are softened due to the impurities, and we determine the resulting universality classes by combining transfer matrix data with conformal invariance. The magnetic exponent beta/nu varies continuously with q, assuming non-Ising values for q>4, whereas the correlation length exponent nu is numerically consistent with unity. We present evidence for the correctness of a formerly proposed phase diagram, unifying pure, percolative and non-trivial random behaviour.

Monte Carlo Study of Correlations Near the Ground State of the Triangular Antiferromagnetic Ising Model

We study the spin-spin correlation function in or near the T=0 ground state of the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice. At zero temperature its modulation on the sublattices gives rise to two Bragg peaks in the structure factor, and a known expression for the algebraic decay of correlations enables us to examine the form of the diffusive scattering. We do so by means of a comparison between exact results and data calculated using standard Monte Carlo techniques. At non-zero temperatures the finite correlation length alters this form, and we account for the change by proposing a generalisation of the zero temperature pair correlation function. The size dependence of our simulation data is investigated through a novel finite-size scaling analysis where t = exp(-2/T) is used as the temperature parameter.

Comment on ``Duality relations for Potts correlation functions''

In a recent paper by Wu (Phys. Lett. A 228, 43-47 (1997)) the three-point correlation of the q-state Potts model on a planar graph was related to ratios of dual partition functions under fixed boundary conditions. It was claimed that the method employed could straightforwardly be applied to higher correlations as well; this is however not true. By explicitly considering the four-point correlation we demonstrate how the appearence of non-well-nested connectivities invalidates the method.

Critical Behavior of Random Bond Potts Models

The effect of quenched impurities on systems which undergo first-order phase transitions is studied within the framework of the q-state Potts model. For large q a mapping to the random field Ising model is introduced which provides a simple physical explanation of the absence of any latent heat in 2D, and suggests that in higher dimensions such systems should exhibit a tricritical point with a correlation length exponent related to the exponents of the random field model by ν= ν_RF / (2 - α_RF - β_RF). In 2D we analyze the model using finite-size scaling and conformal invariance, and find a continuous transition with a magnetic exponent β/ νwhich varies continuously with q, and a weakly varying correlation length exponent ν\approx 1. We find strong evidence for the multiscaling of the correlation functions as expected for such random systems.
