Combinatorial aspects of boundary loop models

We discuss in this paper combinatorial aspects of boundary loop models, that is models of self-avoiding loops on a strip where loops get different weights depending on whether they touch the left, the right, both or no boundary. These models are described algebraically by a generalization of the Temperley-Lieb algebra, dubbed the two-boundary TL algebra. We give results for the dimensions of TL representations and the corresponding degeneracies in the partition functions. We interpret these results in terms of fusion and in the light of the recently uncovered A_n large symmetry present in loop models, paving the way for the analysis of the conformal field theory properties. Finally, we propose conjectures for determinants of Gram matrices in all cases, including the two-boundary one, which has recently been discussed by de Gier and Nichols.

Exact valence bond entanglement entropy and probability distribution in the XXX spin chain and the Potts model

By relating the ground state of Temperley-Lieb hamiltonians to partition functions of 2D statistical mechanics systems on a half plane, and using a boundary Coulomb gas formalism, we obtain in closed form the valence bond entanglement entropy as well as the valence bond probability distribution in these ground states. We find in particular that for the XXX spin chain, the number N_c of valence bonds connecting a subsystem of size L to the outside goes, in the thermodynamic limit, as = (4/pi^2) ln L, disproving a recent conjecture that this should be related with the von Neumann entropy, and thus equal to 1/(3 ln 2) ln L. Our results generalize to the Q-state Potts model.

Conformal boundary loop models

We study a model of densely packed self-avoiding loops on the annulus, related to the Temperley Lieb algebra with an extra idempotent boundary generator. Four different weights are given to the loops, depending on their homotopy class and whether they touch the outer rim of the annulus. When the weight of a contractible bulk loop x = q + 1/q satisfies -2 < x <= 2, this model is conformally invariant for any real weight of the remaining three parameters. We classify the conformal boundary conditions and give exact expressions for the corresponding boundary scaling dimensions. The amplitudes with which the sectors with any prescribed number and types of non contractible loops appear in the full partition function Z are computed rigorously. Based on this, we write a number of identities involving Z which hold true for any finite size. When the weight of a contractible boundary loop y takes certain discrete values, y_r = [r+1]_q / [r]_q with r integer, other identities involving the standard characters K_{r,s} of the Virasoro algebra are established. The connection with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in the O(n) model is discussed in detail, and new scaling dimensions are derived. When q is a root of unity and y = y_r, exact connections with the A_m type RSOS model are made. These involve precise relations between the spectra of the loop and RSOS model transfer matrices, valid in finite size. Finally, the results where y=y_r are related to the theory of Temperley Lieb cabling.

Exact enumeration of Hamiltonian circuits, walks, and chains in two and three dimensions

We present an algorithm for enumerating exactly the number of Hamiltonian chains on regular lattices in low dimensions. By definition, these are sets of k disjoint paths whose union visits each lattice vertex exactly once. The well-known Hamiltonian circuits and walks appear as the special cases k=0 and k=1 respectively. In two dimensions, we enumerate chains on L x L square lattices up to L=12, walks up to L=17, and circuits up to L=20. Some results for three dimensions are also given. Using our data we extract several quantities of physical interest.

Unbiased sampling of globular lattice proteins in three dimensions

We present a Monte Carlo method that allows efficient and unbiased sampling of Hamiltonian walks on a cubic lattice. Such walks are self-avoiding and visit each lattice site exactly once. They are often used as simple models of globular proteins, upon adding suitable local interactions. Our algorithm can easily be equipped with such interactions, but we study here mainly the flexible homopolymer case where each conformation is generated with uniform probability. We argue that the algorithm is ergodic and has dynamical exponent z=0. We then use it to study polymers of size up to 64^3 = 262144 monomers. Results are presented for the effective interaction between end points, and the interaction with the boundaries of the system.

Phase diagram of the chromatic polynomial on a torus

We study the zero-temperature partition function of the Potts antiferromagnet (i.e., the chromatic polynomial) on a torus using a transfer-matrix approach. We consider square- and triangular-lattice strips with fixed width L, arbitrary length N, and fully periodic boundary conditions. On the mathematical side, we obtain exact expressions for the chromatic polynomial of widths L=5,6,7 for the square and triangular lattices. On the physical side, we obtain the exact ``phase diagrams'' for these strips of width L and infinite length, and from these results we extract useful information about the infinite-volume phase diagram of this model: in particular, the number and position of the different phases.

Non-intersection exponents of fully packed trails on the square lattice

Fully packed trails on the square lattice are known to be described, in the long distance limit, by a collection of free non compact bosons and symplectic fermions, and thus exhibit some properties reminiscent of Brownian motion, like vanishing fuseau exponents. We investigate in this paper the situation for their non-intersection exponents. Our approach is purely numerical, and based both on transfer matrix and Monte Carlo calculations. We find some evidence for non-intersection exponents given by CFT formulas similar to the Brownian case, albeit slightly different in their details.

A staggered six-vertex model with non-compact continuum limit

The antiferromagnetic critical point of the Potts model on the square lattice was identified by Baxter as a staggered integrable six-vertex model. In this work, we investigate the integrable structure of this model. It enables us to derive some new properties, such as the Hamiltonian limit of the model, an equivalent vertex model, and the structure resulting from the Z_2 symmetry. Using this material, we discuss the low-energy spectrum, and relate it to geometrical excitations. We also compute the critical exponents by solving the Bethe equations for a large lattice width N. The results confirm that the low-energy spectrum is a collection of continua with typical exponent gaps of order 1/(log N)^2.

Classical dimers with aligning interactions on the square lattice

We present a detailed study of a model of close-packed dimers on the square lattice with an interaction between nearest-neighbor dimers. The interaction favors parallel alignment of dimers, resulting in a low-temperature crystalline phase. With large-scale Monte Carlo and Transfer Matrix calculations, we show that the crystal melts through a Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition to give rise to a high-temperature critical phase, with algebraic decays of correlations functions with exponents that vary continuously with the temperature. We give a theoretical interpretation of these results by mapping the model to a Coulomb gas, whose coupling constant and associated exponents are calculated numerically with high precision. Introducing monomers is a marginal perturbation at the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and gives rise to another critical line. We study this line numerically, showing that it is in the Ashkin-Teller universality class, and terminates in a tricritical point at finite temperature and monomer fugacity. In the course of this work, we also derive analytic results relevant to the non-interacting case of dimer coverings, including a Bethe Ansatz (at the free fermion point) analysis, a detailed discussion of the effective height model and a free field analysis of height fluctuations.

Tetromino tilings and the Tutte polynomial

We consider tiling rectangles of size 4m x 4n by T-shaped tetrominoes. Each tile is assigned a weight that depends on its orientation and position on the lattice. For a particular choice of the weights, the generating function of tilings is shown to be the evaluation of the multivariate Tutte polynomial Z\_G(Q,v) (known also to physicists as the partition function of the Q-state Potts model) on an (m-1) x (n-1) rectangle G, where the parameter Q and the edge weights v can take arbitrary values depending on the tile weights.

Random trimer tilings

We study tilings of the square lattice by linear trimers. For a cylinder of circumference m, we construct a conserved functional of the base of the tilings, and use this to block-diagonalize the transfer matrix. The number of blocks increases exponentially with m. The dimension of the ground-state block is shown to grow as (3 / 2^{1/3})^m. We numerically diagonalize this block for m <= 27, obtaining the estimate S = 0.158520 +- 0.000015 for the entropy per site in the thermodynamic limit. We present numerical evidence that the continuum limit of the model has conformal invariance. We measure several scaling dimensions, including those corresponding to defects of dimers and L-shaped trimers. The trimer tilings of a plane admits a two-dimensional height representation. Monte Carlo simulations of the height variables show that the height-height correlations grows logarithmically at large separation, and the orientation-orientation correlations decay as a power law.

Eigenvalue amplitudes of the Potts model on a torus

We consider the Q-state Potts model in the random-cluster formulation, defined on finite two-dimensional lattices of size L x N with toroidal boundary conditions. Due to the non-locality of the clusters, the partition function Z(L,N) cannot be written simply as a trace of the transfer matrix T\_L. Using a combinatorial method, we establish the decomposition Z(L,N) = \sum\_{l,D\_k} b^{l,D\_k} K\_{l,D\_k}, where the characters K\_{l,D\_k} = \sum\_i (λ\_i)^N are simple traces. In this decomposition, the amplitudes b^{l,D\_k} of the eigenvalues λ\_i of T\_L are labelled by the number l=0,1,...,L of clusters which are non-contractible with respect to the transfer (N) direction, and a representation D\_k of the cyclic group C\_l. We obtain rigorously a general expression for b^{l,D\_k} in terms of the characters of C\_l, and, using number theoretic results, show that it coincides with an expression previously obtained in the continuum limit by Read and Saleur.

Unconventional continuous phase transition in a three dimensional dimer model

Phase transitions occupy a central role in physics, due both to their experimental ubiquity and their fundamental conceptual importance. The explanation of universality at phase transitions was the great success of the theory formulated by Ginzburg and Landau, and extended through the renormalization group by Wilson. However, recent theoretical suggestions have challenged this point of view in certain situations. In this Letter we report the first large-scale simulations of a three-dimensional model proposed to be a candidate for requiring a description beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson framework: we study the phase transition from the dimer crystal to the Coulomb phase in the cubic dimer model. Our numerical results strongly indicate that the transition is continuous and are compatible with a tricritical universality class, at variance with previous proposals.

Transfer Matrices and Partition-Function Zeros for Antiferromagnetic Potts Models. IV. Chromatic polynomial with cyclic boundary conditions

We study the chromatic polynomial P_G(q) for m \times n square- and triangular-lattice strips of widths 2\leq m \leq 8 with cyclic boundary conditions. This polynomial gives the zero-temperature limit of the partition function for the antiferromagnetic q-state Potts model defined on the lattice G. We show how to construct the transfer matrix in the Fortuin--Kasteleyn representation for such lattices and obtain the accumulation sets of chromatic zeros in the complex q-plane in the limit n\to\infty. We find that the different phases that appear in this model can be characterized by a topological parameter. We also compute the bulk and surface free energies and the central charge.

Character decomposition of Potts model partition functions. II. Toroidal geometry

We extend our combinatorial approach of decomposing the partition function of the Potts model on finite two-dimensional lattices of size L x N to the case of toroidal boundary conditions. The elementary quantities in this decomposition are characters K\_{l,D} labelled by a number of bridges l=0,1,...,L and an irreducible representation D of the symmetric group S\_l. We develop an operational method of determining the amplitudes of the eigenvalues as well as some of their degeneracies.

Character decomposition of Potts model partition functions. I. Cyclic geometry

We study the Potts model (defined geometrically in the cluster picture) on finite two-dimensional lattices of size L x N, with boundary conditions that are free in the L-direction and periodic in the N-direction. The decomposition of the partition function in terms of the characters K\_{1+2l} (with l=0,1,...,L) has previously been studied using various approaches (quantum groups, combinatorics, transfer matrices). We first show that the K\_{1+2l} thus defined actually coincide, and can be written as traces of suitable transfer matrices in the cluster picture. We then proceed to similarly decompose constrained partition functions in which exactly j clusters are non-contractible with respect to the periodic lattice direction, and a partition function with fixed transverse boundary conditions.

Complex-temperature phase diagram of Potts and RSOS models

We study the phase diagram of Q-state Potts models, for Q=4 cos^2(PI/p) a Beraha number (p>2 integer), in the complex-temperature plane. The models are defined on L x N strips of the square or triangular lattice, with boundary conditions on the Potts spins that are periodic in the longitudinal (N) direction and free or fixed in the transverse (L) direction. The relevant partition functions can then be computed as sums over partition functions of an A\_{p-1} type RSOS model, thus making contact with the theory of quantum groups. We compute the accumulation sets, as N -> infinity, of partition function zeros for p=4,5,6,infinity and L=2,3,4 and study selected features for p>6 and/or L>4. This information enables us to formulate several conjectures about the thermodynamic limit, L -> infinity, of these accumulation sets. The resulting phase diagrams are quite different from those of the generic case (irrational p). For free transverse boundary conditions, the partition function zeros are found to be dense in large parts of the complex plane, even for the Ising model (p=4). We show how this feature is modified by taking fixed transverse boundary conditions.

The antiferromagnetic transition for the square-lattice Potts model

We solve the antiferromagnetic transition for the Q-state Potts model (defined geometrically for Q generic) on the square lattice. The solution is based on a detailed analysis of the Bethe ansatz equations (which involve staggered source terms) and on extensive numerical diagonalization of transfer matrices. It involves subtle distinctions between the loop/cluster version of the model, and the associated RSOS and (twisted) vertex models. The latter's continuum limit involves two bosons, one which is compact and twisted, and the other which is not, with a total central charge c=2-6/t, for sqrt(Q)=2cos(pi/t). The non-compact boson contributes a continuum component to the spectrum of critical exponents. For Q generic, these properties are shared by the Potts model. For Q a Beraha number [Q = 4 cos^2(pi/n) with n integer] the two-boson theory is truncated and becomes essentially Z\_{n-2} parafermions. Moreover, the vertex model, and, for Q generic, the Potts model, exhibit a first-order critical point on the transition line, i.e., the critical point is also the locus of level crossings where the derivatives of the free energy are discontinuous. In that sense, the thermal exponent of the Potts model is generically nu=1/2. Things are profoundly different for Q a Beraha number, where the transition is second order, with nu=(t-2)/2 determined by the psi\_1 parafermion. As one enters the adjacant Berker-Kadanoff phase, the model flows, for t odd, to a minimal model of CFT with c=1-6/t(t-1), while for t even it becomes massive. This provides a physical realization of a flow conjectured by Fateev and Zamolodchikov in the context of Z\_N integrable perturbations. Finally, we argue that the antiferromagnetic transition occurs as well on other two-dimensional lattices.
