A Vendor-Agnostic LiDAR Data Conversion System with Multi-Signal Detection and Multi-Format Output

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors capture the surrounding environment as dense 3D point clouds by measuring the time-of-flight of emitted laser pulses, making them foundational across autonomous vehicles, robotics, and large-scale mapping. PCAP (Packet Capture) files from these sensors are the starting point of most 3D perception pipelines, yet internal packet structures, UDP (User Datagram Protocol) port conventions and encoding schemes differ enough across manufacturers that no single tool reads them all. Ouster, Velodyne, Hesai, and Livox each require their own SDK (Software Development Kit), their own environment setup, and their own conversion workflow. Supporting all four means maintaining four disconnected pipelines with no shared infrastructure. The pipeline described here takes a raw PCAP as input and handles vendor identification automatically, scoring six independent file characteristics through a weighted multi-signal approach to determine the source sensor. C++ SDKs handle Ouster and Velodyne, while Hesai and Livox rely on Python-based dpkt parsing where no open source SDK exists. From there, a single command writes output to any of five industry-standard formats. We tested on real outdoor captures. Ouster peaks at 2.08M points per second, Velodyne at 1.47M, both running through native C++ packet decoding. Hesai and Livox land at 110K and 150K respectively, where Python-layer parsing introduces overhead that compounds under sustained load. The 8-10x gap held consistently across runs. Tested on a consumer-grade i3 with 8GB RAM, no vendor configuration required

Unbalanced OPF Modelling for Mixed Monopolar and Bipolar HVDC Grid Configurations

HVDC is a critically important technology for the large-scale integration of renewable resources such as offshore wind farms. Currently, only point-to-point and multi-terminal HVDC connections exist in real-life operation. However, with the advancement of VSC-based converter technologies, future HVDC systems are foreseen to develop into meshed HVDC grids. Bipolar HVDC grids can be operated in an unbalanced way during single pole outages or in form of mixed monopolar and bipolar grids. However, currently, there are no (optimal) power flow tools to study the feasibility of such systems. Therefore, we develop an optimal power flow (OPF) model for hybrid AC-DC grids to capture the DC side unbalances and allowing to efficiently plan and operate such future grids. In this paper, we present a multi-conductor OPF model with separate modeling of the positive pole, negative pole, metallic return conductors, and ground return. The capabilities of the model are demonstrated on a small test case, including monopolar tapping over a bipolar DC link. It is demonstrated that the developed OPF model can capture the loop flows between the different poles in unbalanced conditions, as opposed to the existing single-wire representations in the literature. Further, numerical results are presented for multiple test cases with various system sizes, starting from an 11-bus system to a 3120-bus system to demonstrate the computational tractability of the chosen model formulation.

Chemical speciation and source apportionment of ambient PM2.5 in New Delhi before, during, and after the Diwali fireworks

Diwali is among the most important Indian festivals, and elaborate firework displays mark the evening's festivities. This study assesses the impact of Diwali on the concentration, composition, and sources of ambient PM2.5. We observed the total PM2.5 concentrations to rise to 16 times the pre-firework levels, while each of the elemental, organic, and black carbon fractions of ambient PM2.5 increased by a factor of 46.1, 3.7, and 5.6, respectively. The concentration of species like K, Al, Sr, Ba, S, and Bi displayed distinct peaks during the firework event and were identified as tracers. The average concentrations of potential carcinogens, like As, exceeded US EPA screening levels for industrial air by a factor of ~9.6, while peak levels reached up to 16.1 times the screening levels. The source apportionment study, undertaken using positive matrix factorization, revealed the fireworks to account for 95% of the total elemental PM2.5 during Diwali. The resolved primary organic emissions, too, were enhanced by a factor of 8 during Diwali. Delhi has encountered serious haze events following Diwali in recent years; this study highlights that biomass burning emissions rather than the fireworks drive the poor air quality in the days following Diwali.
