Universal Two-Loop Current--Current Renormalization of Four-Fermion Operators

The complete one- and two-loop gauge and scalar current--current contributions to the running of arbitrary dimension-six four-fermion operators are reported. The results are obtained in a basis-independent and renormalization-scheme-agnostic fashion and are valid for arbitrary gauge groups. The complete gauge and scalar contributions, including the genuine one- and two-loop poles, counterterm insertions, wave-function renormalization, finite evanescent insertions, diagram multiplicities, and the associated color, charge and Yukawa factors are provided for the most general renormalizable Lagrangian with gauge and scalar interactions. The results enable the derivation of leading- and next-to-leading-order current--current anomalous-dimension matrices for arbitrary Effective Field Theories (EFTs) and constitute a significant step toward the complete two-loop renormalization of general EFTs.

Kaon physics in the SMEFT

Kaon physics observables are highly sensitive to New Physics (NP) effects and form in combination with the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) a powerful tool to study physics that goes beyond the Standard Model paradigm. We review recent SMEFT analyses in the Kaon sector and point out novel directions that might be investigated in the future.

Anomalous Dimension of a General Effective Gauge Theory II: Fermionic Sector

The complete set of one-loop anomalous dimensions for general Effective Field Theories (EFTs) is derived using on-shell methods. Combined with previous findings for the bosonic sector, the obtained results conclude the computation of the complete set of leading order Renormalization Group Equations (RGEs) in arbitrary gauge EFTs containing scalar and fermion fields. Renormalization effects are consistently taken into account at the order $1/\Lambda^2$ in the new physics scale $\Lambda$ for all renormalizable and non-renormalizable couplings. The obtained template RGEs include operator mixing across different dimensions and are valid for arbitrary gauge groups.

SMEFT ATLAS: The Landscape Beyond the Standard Model

The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) based on the unbroken gauge group $\text{SU(3)}_C\otimes\text{SU(2)}_L\otimes\text{U(1)}_Y$ and containing only particles of the Standard Model (SM) has developed in the last decade to a mature field. It is the framework to be used in the energy gap from scales sufficiently higher than the electroweak scale up to the lowest energy scale at which new particles show up. We summarize the present status of this theory with a particular emphasize on its role in the indirect search for new physics (NP). While flavour physics of both quarks and leptons is the main topic of our review, we also discuss electric dipole moments, anomalous magnetic moments $(g-2)_{\mu,e}$, $Z$-pole observables, Higgs observables and high-$p_T$ scattering processes within the SMEFT. We group the observables into ten classes and list for each class the most relevant operators and the corresponding renormalization group equations (RGEs). We exhibit the correlations between different classes implied both by the operator mixing and the $\text{SU(2)}_L$ gauge symmetry. Our main goal is to provide an insight into the complicated operator structure of this framework which hopefully will facilitate the identification of valid ultraviolet completions behind possible anomalies observed in future data. Numerous colourful charts, and 85 tables, while representing rather complicated RG evolution from the NP scale down to the electroweak scale, beautify the involved SMEFT landscape. Over 950 references to the literature underline the importance and the popularity of this field. We discuss both top-down and bottom-up approaches as well as their interplay. This allows us eventually to present an atlas of different landscapes beyond the SM that includes heavy gauge bosons and scalars, vector-like quarks and leptons and leptoquarks.

Time-Dependent Precision Measurement of $B_s^0\rightarrow \phi \mu^+\mu^-$ Decay at FCC-$ee$

We study the feasibility of measuring time-dependent $C\!P$ violation in the rare flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow \phi(\rightarrow K^+K^-) \mu^+ \mu^-$ at the FCC-$ee$. In the Standard Model (SM), $C\!P$ violation in this mode arises only at higher orders and is highly suppressed. Extensions of the SM, collectively referred to as New Physics (NP), can introduce additional $C\!P$-violating phases that enhance such effects. The decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow \phi \mu^+ \mu^-$, mediated by the $b \rightarrow s \ell^+ \ell^-$ transition, is therefore a promising probe of NP. The FCC-$ee$, operating as a high-luminosity $Z$-factory, offers an optimal environment for this measurement due to its large event yield, clean conditions, efficient particle identification, and excellent vertex resolution. We perform a Monte Carlo study using Pythia and Delphes with the IDEA detector concept. A relative precision better than $\mathcal{O}(1\%)$ on the branching ratio and $\mathcal{O}(10^{-2})$ on the time-integrated $C\!P$ asymmetry is found to be achievable. We determine the projected sensitivities to the observables $D_f$, $C_f$, and $S_f$, which parameterize time-dependent $C\!P$ violation. In the untagged analysis, a precision of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-1})$ on $D_f$ can be reached. With flavor tagging, sensitivities to $C_f$ and $S_f$ improve to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-2})$. These measurements remain inaccessible to current flavor experiments. Interpreting the results within the Weak Effective Theory provides model-independent constraints on $C\!P$-violating NP. This study demonstrates that FCC-$ee$ enables first-time access to $C\!P$-sensitive observables previously beyond experimental reach.

Anomalous Dimension of a General Effective Gauge Theory I: Bosonic Sector

We classify the physical operators of the most general bosonic effective gauge theory up to dimension six using on-shell methods. Based on this classification, we compute the complete one-loop anomalous dimension employing both on-shell unitarity-based and geometric techniques. Our analysis fully accounts for the mixing of operators with different dimensions. The results broadly apply to any Effective Field Theory with arbitrary gauge symmetry and bosonic degrees of freedom. To illustrate their utility, we perform a complete cross-check of results on the renormalization of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), $O(n)$ scalar theory, and the SMEFT extended with an axion-like particle. Additionally, we present new results for axion-like particles with CP-violating interactions.

Two-Loop Anomalous Dimensions in the LEFT: Dimension-Six Four-Fermion Operators in NDR

We derive the complete set of two-loop anomalous dimensions describing the mixing of four-fermion operators in the Low Energy Effective Field Theory (LEFT). The calculation is performed in Naive Dimensional Regularization with anticommuting $\gamma_5$ (the NDR scheme), and the results are given in the "JMS basis" of dimension-six operators. The derivation relies on known results for UV poles in two-loop diagrams in QCD, which are then used to derive the two-loop Anomalous Dimension Matrix (ADM) for the full set of four-fermion operators including $O(\alpha_s^2)$, $O(\alpha_s\alpha)$ and $O(\alpha^2)$ corrections. The method employed is an extension of a common approach to deal with traces containing $\gamma_5$ in NDR. Our results have been implemented in the public code DsixTools. We also discuss and provide the results in the LEFT with 5, 4 and 3 active quark flavors.

wilson: A package for renormalization group running in the SMEFT with Sterile Neutrinos

Sterile neutrinos are well-motivated beyond the Standard Model (BSM) particles. The Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) augmented with these new fields is known as the $\nu$SMEFT. We present the first code for solving the renormalization group equations (RGEs) of the $\nu$SMEFT in an automated way. For this purpose, we have implemented the $\nu$SMEFT as a new effective field theory (EFT) in the Wilson coefficient exchange format WCxf. Furthermore, we included anomalous dimensions depending on the gauge couplings and Yukawas in the python package wilson. This novel version of wilson allows a consistent inclusion of $\nu$SMEFT renormalization group (RG) running effects above the electroweak (EW) scale in phenomenological studies involving sterile neutrinos. Moreover, this new release allows us to study EW, strong, and Yukawa running effects separately within the SMEFT.

A Simple Dirac Prescription for Two-Loop Anomalous Dimension Matrices

A novel method to treat effects from evanescent operators in next-to-leading order (NLO) computations is introduced. The approach allows, besides further simplifications, to discard evanescent-to-physical mixing contributions in NLO calculations. The method is independent of the treatments of $\gamma_5$ and can therefore be combined with different renormalization schemes. We illustrate the utility of this result by reproducing literature results of two-loop anomalous dimension matrices for both $|\Delta F| = 1$ and $|\Delta F| = 2$ transitions.

Fierz identities at the one-loop level

One-loop Fierz identities are discussed, together with general basis transformations in Effective Field theories at the tree- and one-loop level. To this end, the notion of one-loop shifts is introduced, together with several examples that illustrate the virtues of this method.

Computing Tools for Effective Field Theories

In recent years, theoretical and phenomenological studies with effective field theories have become a trending and prolific line of research in the field of high-energy physics. In order to discuss present and future prospects concerning automated tools in this field, the SMEFT-Tools 2022 workshop was held at the University of Zurich from 14th-16th September 2022. The current document collects and summarizes the content of this workshop.

Renormalization scheme factorization of one-loop Fierz identities

We present a proof of the factorization of renormalization scheme in one-loop-corrected Fierz identities. This scheme factorization facilitates the simultaneous transformation of operator basis and renormalization scheme using only relations between physical operators; the evanescent operators in the respective bases may be chosen entirely independently of each other. The relations between evanescent operators in the two bases is automatically accounted for by the corrected Fierz identities. We illustrate the utility of this result with a two-loop anomalous dimension matrix computation using the Naive-Dimensional Regularization scheme, which is then transformed via one-loop Fierz identities to the known result in the literature given in a different basis and calculated in the Larin scheme. Additionally, we reproduce results from the literature of basis transformations involving the rotation of evanescent operators into the physical basis using our method, without the need to explicitly compute one-loop matrix elements of evanescent operators.

Kaon Physics Without New Physics in $\varepsilon_K$

Despite the observation of significant suppression of $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ branching ratios no clear sign of New Physics (NP) has been identified in $\Delta F=2$ observables, in particular to $\varepsilon_K$. Assuming negligible NP contributions to these observables allows us to determine CKM parameters without being involved in the tensions between inclusive and exclusive determinations of $V_{cb}$ and $V_{ub}$. Furthermore, this method avoids the impact of NP on the determination of these parameters present likely in global fits. Simultaneously it provides SM predictions for numerous rare $K$ and $B$ branching ratios that are most accurate to date. Analyzing this scenario within $Z^\prime$ models we point out, following the 2009 observations of Monika Blanke and ours of 2020, that despite the absence of NP contributions to $\varepsilon_K$, significant NP contributions to several rare Kaon decays, $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and $\Delta M_K$ can be present. In the simplest scenario, this is guaranteed by a single non-vanishing imaginary left-handed $Z^\prime$ coupling $g^L_{sd}$. This scenario implies very stringent correlations between the Kaon observables considered by us. In particular, the identification of NP in any of these observables implies automatically NP contributions to the remaining ones. A characteristic feature of this scenario is a strict correlation between $K^+\to\pi^+\nu\bar\nu$ and $K_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar\nu$ branching ratios on a branch parallel to the Grossman-Nir bound. Moreover, $\Delta M_K$ is automatically suppressed as seems to be required by recent lattice QCD results.

Kaon physics overview

The present status of Kaon physics is summarized from a theory point of view. Focus is laid on $\Delta S=2$, $\Delta S=1$ as well as on rare Kaon decays, where progress has been made for instance in the case of $\varepsilon_K$ and $K_S\to \mu^+\mu^-$. Furthermore, several New Physics scenarios are discussed in the context of rare Kaon decays and other Kaon observables.

LHC EFT WG Note: Precision matching of microscopic physics to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT)

This note gives an overview of the tools for the precision matching of ultraviolet theories to the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) at the tree level and one loop. Several semi- and fully automated codes are presented, as well as some supplementary codes for the basis conversion and the subsequent running and matching at low energies. A suggestion to collect information for cross-validations of current and future codes is made.

Dipole operators in Fierz identities

We study the contribution from dipole operators to one-loop Fierz identities and provide the resulting QCD and QED shifts to the tree-level relations for all four-fermion operators. The results simplify one-loop basis changes as well as matching computations and allow one to consistently eliminate operators from an operator basis which give rise to complications, e.g. traces involving $\gamma_5$.

Confronting the vector leptoquark hypothesis with new low- and high-energy data

In light of new data we present an updated phenomenological analysis of the simplified $U_1$-leptoquark model addressing charged-current $B$-meson anomalies. The analysis shows a good compatibility of low-energy data (dominated by the lepton flavor universality ratios $R_D$ and $R_{D^*}$) with the high-energy constraints posed by $pp\to \tau\bar\tau$ Drell-Yan data. We also show that present data are well compatible with a framework where the leptoquark couples with similar strength to both left- and right-handed third-generation fermions, a scenario that is well-motivated from a model building perspective. We find that the high-energy implications of this setup will be probed at the 95% confidence level in the high-luminosity phase of the LHC.
