The Geometry and Combinatorics of Some Hessenberg Varieties Related to the Permutohedral Variety

We construct a concrete isomorphism from the permutohedral variety to the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety associated to the Hessenberg function $h_+(i)=i+1$, $1\le i\le n-1$. In the process of defining the isomorphism, we introduce a sequence of varieties which we call the prepermutohedral varieties. We first determine the toric structure of these varieties and compute the Euler characteristics and the Betti numbers using the theory of toric varieties. Then, we describe the cohomology of these varieties. We also find a natural way to encode the one-dimensional components of the cohomology using the codes defined by Stembridge. Applying the isomorphisms we constructed, we are also able to describe the geometric structure of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties associated to the Hessenberg function represented by $h_k= (2,3, \cdots, k+1, n,\cdots,n)$, $1\le k\le n-3$. In particular, we are able to write down the cohomology ring of the variety. Finally, we determine the dot representation of the permutation group ${\frak S}_n$ on these Hessenberg varieties.

On the Arithmetic Dynamics of Monomial Maps

We generalized several results for the arithmetic dynamics of monomial maps, including Silverman's conjectures on height growth, dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture, and dynamical Manin-Mumford conjecture. These results are originally known for monomial maps on algebraic tori. We extend the results to arbitrary toric varieties.

Rational surface maps with invariant meromorphic two forms

We consider a rational map f:S->S of a complex projective surface together with an invariant meromorphic two form. Under a mild topological assumption on the map, we show that the zeroes of the invariant form can be eliminated by birational change of coordinate. In this context, when the form has no zeroes, we investigate the notion of algebraic stability for f. We show in particular that algebraic stability is equivalent to a more tractable condition involving the behavior of f on the poles of the form. Finally, we illustrate our results in the particular case where S is the projective plane and the invariant form is dx dy / xy, showing that our criterion for stability translates to whether or not the rotation number for a certain circle homeomorphism is rational.

Stabilization of monomial maps in higher codimension

A monomial self-map $f$ on a complex toric variety is said to be $k$-stable if the action induced on the $2k$-cohomology is compatible with iteration. We show that under suitable conditions on the eigenvalues of the matrix of exponents of $f$, we can find a toric model with at worst quotient singularities where $f$ is $k$-stable. If $f$ is replaced by an iterate one can find a $k$-stable model as soon as the dynamical degrees $\lambda_k$ of $f$ satisfy $\lambda_k^2>\lambda_{k-1}\lambda_{k+1}$. On the other hand, we give examples of monomial maps $f$, where this condition is not satisfied and where the degree sequences $\deg_k(f^n)$ do not satisfy any linear recurrence. It follows that such an $f$ is not $k$-stable on any toric model with at worst quotient singularities.

Canonical Height Functions For Monomial Maps

We show that the canonical height function defined by Silverman does not have the Northcott finiteness property in general. We develop a new canonical height function for monomial maps. In certain cases, this new canonical height function has nice properties.

Pulling Back Cohomology Classes and Dynamical Degrees Of Monomial Maps

We study the pullback maps on cohomology groups for equivariant rational maps (i.e., monomial maps) on toric varieties. Our method is based on the intersection theory on toric varieties. We use the method to determine the dynamical degrees of monomial maps and compute the degrees of the Cremona involution.

Algebraic stability and degree growth of monomial maps and polynomial maps

Given a rational monomial map, we consider the question of finding a toric variety on which it is algebraically stable. We give conditions for when such variety does or does not exist. We also obtain several precise estimates of the degree sequences of monomial maps on $\P^n$. Finally, we characterize polynomial maps which are algebraically stable on $(\P^1)^n$.
