A Liouville theorem for stationary incompressible fluids of von Mises type

We consider entire solutions $u$ of the equations describing the stationary flow of a generalized Newtonian fluid in 2D concentrating on the question, if a Liouville-type result holds in the sense that the boundedness of $u$ implies its constancy. A positive answer is true for $p$-fluids in the case $p>1$ (including the classical Navier-Stokes system for the choice $p=2$), and recently we established this Liouville property for the Prandtl-Eyring fluid model, for which the dissipative potential has nearly linear growth. Here we finally discuss the case of perfectly plastic fluids whose flow is governed by a von Mises-type stress-strain relation formally corresponding to the case $p=1$. it turns out that, for dissipative potentials of linear growth, the condition of $\mu$-ellipticity with exponent $\mu<2$ is sufficient for proving the Liouville theorem.

On the local boundedness of generalized minimizers of variational problems with linear growth

We prove local boundedness of generalized solutions to a large class of variational problems of linear growth including boundary value problems of minimal surface type and models from image analysis related to the procedure of TV-regularization occurring in connection with the denoising of images, which might even be coupled with an inpainting process. Our main argument relies on a Moser-type iteration procedure.

Signal recovery via TV-type energies

We consider one-dimensional variants of the classical first order total variation denoising model introduced by Rudin, Osher and Fatemi. This study is based on our previous work on various denoising and inpainting problems in image analysis, where we applied variational methods in arbitrary dimensions. More than being just a special case, the one-dimensional setting allows us to study regularity properties of minimizers by more subtle methods that do not have correspondences in higher dimensions. In particular, we obtain quite strong regularity results for a class of data functions that contains many of the standard examples from signal processing such as rectangle- or triangle signals as a special case. An analysis of the related Euler-Lagrange equation, which turns out to be a second order two-point boundary value problem with Neumann conditions, by ODE methods completes the picture of our investigation.

A reciprocity principle for constrained isoperimetric problems and existence of isoperimetric subregions in convex sets

It is a well known fact that in $\mathbb{R}^n$ a subset of minimal perimeter $L$ among all sets of a given volume is also a set of maximal volume among all sets of the same perimeter $L$. This is called the reciprocity principle for isoperimetric problems. The aim of this note is to prove this relation in the case where the class of admissible sets is restricted to the subsets of some subregion $G\subsetneq\mathbb{R}^n$. Furthermore, we give a characterization of those (unbounded) convex subsets of $\mathbb{R}^2$ in which the isoperimetric problem has a solution. The perimeter that we consider is the one relative to $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Coupled variational problems of linear growth related to the denoising and inpainting of images

In this note we present some results that were already conjectured in the work [9] by Bildhauer, Fuchs and Weickert, where they have investigated analytical aspects of coupled variational models with applications to mathematical imaging. Here we focus on variants of linear growth, which require a treatment in the framework of relaxation theory and convex analysis. Following basic ideas from [6] and [7], we establish existence and regularity of (dual-)solutions.

Existence and almost everywhere regularity of generalized minimizers for a class of variational problems with linear growth related to image inpainting

We continue the analysis of some modifications of the total variation image inpainting method formulated on the space $BV(\Omega)^M$ in the sense that we generalize the main results of [32] to the case that a more general data fitting term is involved. As in [32] we deal with vector-valued images, we do not impose any structure condition on our density $F$ and the dimension of the domain $\Omega$ is arbitrary. Precisely we discuss existence of generalized solutions of the corresponding variational problem and we will also pass to the associated dual variational problem for which we show unique solvability. Among other things, our results are the uniqueness of the absolutely continuous part $\nabla^a u$ of the gradient of $BV$-solutions $u$ on the entire domain $\Omega$, where outside of the damaged region $D$ we even get uniqueness of $BV$-solutions. Imposing stronger assumptions on our density $F$ and an $L^{\infty}$-condition on our partial observation $f$ we are going to prove a maximum principle for each generalized minimizer and deduce partial $C^{1,\beta}$-regularity of solutions on the entire domain $\Omega$ for all $0<\beta\leq\frac{1}{2}$.

On the solvability in Sobolev spaces and related regularity results for a variant of the TV-image recovery model: the vector-valued case

We study classes of variational problems with energy densities of linear growth acting on vector-valued functions. Our energies are strictly convex variants of the TV-regularization model introduced by Rudin, Osher and Fatemi [15] as a powerful tool in the field of image recovery. In contrast to our previous work we here try to figure out conditions under which we can solve these variational problems in classical spaces, e.g. in the Sobolev class $W^{1,1}$.

A higher order TV-type variational problem related to the denoising and inpainting of images

We give a comprehensive survey on a class of higher order variational problems which are motivated by applications in mathematical imaging. The overall aim of this note is to investigate if and in which manner results from the first author's previous work on variants of the TV-regularization model (see e.g. [BF1], [BF2], [BF3] and [FT]) can be extended to functionals which involve higher derivatives. This seems to be not only of theoretical interest, but also relevant to applications since higher order TV-denoising appears to maintain the advantages of the classical model as introduced by Rudin, Osher and Fatemi in [ROF] while avoiding the unpleasant "staircasing" effect (see e.g. [BKP] or [LLT]). Our paper features results concerning generalized solutions in spaces of functions of higher order bounded variation, dual solutions as well as partial regularity of minimizers.

A density result for Sobolev functions and functions of higher order bounded variation with additional integrability constraints

We prove density of smooth functions in subspaces of Sobolev- and higher order $BV$-spaces of kind $W^{m,p}(\Omega)\cap L^q(\Omega-D)$ and $BV^m(\Omega)\cap L^q(\Omega-D)$, respectively, where $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ ($n\in\mathbb{N}$) is an open and bounded set with suitably smooth boundary, $m np/(n-mp)$. Here we say that a $W^{m-1,1}(\Omega)$-function is of $m$-th order bounded variation ($BV^m$) if its $m$-th order partial derivatives in the sense of distributions are finite Radon measures. This takes up earlier results by C. Tietz and the author concerning functions with merely one order of differentiability which emerged in the context of a variational problem related to image analysis. In the connection of our methods we also investigate a question concerning the boundary traces of $W^{1,p}(\Omega)\cap L^q(\Omega)$-functions.
