Continuum Fibonacci Schr\"odinger Operators in the Strongly Coupled Regime

We study Schr\"odinger operators on the real line whose potentials are generated by the Fibonacci substitution sequence and a rule that replaces symbols by compactly supported potential pieces. We consider the case in which one of those pieces is identically zero, and study the dimension of the spectrum in the large-coupling regime. Our results include a generalization of theorems regarding explicit examples that were studied previously and a counterexample that shows that the na\"ive generalization of previously established statements is false. In particular, in the aperiodic case, the local Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum does not necessarily converge to zero uniformly on compact subsets as the coupling constant is sent to infinity.

Absence of ballistic motion and presence of almost-ballistic motion for unitary operators with pure point spectrum

We adapt two results of Simon and collaborators to the setting of discrete-time unitary dynamics. We show that pure point spectrum precludes ballistic motion, and exhibit a family of examples showing that this is sharp within the class of extended Cantero--Moral-Vel\'{a}zquez (CMV) matrices: that is, there exist extended CMV matrices exhibiting pure point spectrum together with quantum dynamics as close to ballistic motion as one desires.

Sharp Polynomial Velocity Decay Bounds for Multidimensional Periodic Schr\"odinger Operators

We investigate periodic Schr\"odinger operators in arbitrary dimensions in the large coupling regime. Our results establish that both the Lieb--Robinson velocity and the asymptotic velocity decay at an inverse polynomial rate in the coupling, with the precise exponent determined by the period of the underlying potential. In particular, we obtain sharp polynomial decay rates that capture the precise dependence on the periodic structure.

Almost Periodic Solutions of The Cubic Defocusing Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equation

This paper addresses the Cauchy problem for the cubic defocusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation (NLS) with almost periodic initial data. We prove that for small analytic quasiperiodic initial data satisfying Diophantine frequency conditions, the Cauchy problem admits a solution that is almost periodic in both space and time, and that this solution is unique among solutions locally bounded in a suitable sense. The analysis combines direct and inverse spectral theory. In the inverse spectral theory part, we prove existence, almost periodicity, and uniqueness for solutions with initial data whose associated Dirac operator has purely a.c.\ spectrum that is not too thin. This resolves novel challenges presented by the NLS hierarchy, such as an additional degree of freedom and an additional commuting flow. In the direct spectral theory part, for Dirac operators with small analytic quasiperiodic potentials with Diophantine frequency conditions, we prove pure a.c.\ spectrum, exponentially decaying spectral gaps, and spectral thickness conditions (homogeneity and Craig-type conditions).

Optimal dispersion for discrete periodic Schr\"odinger operators

We prove a dispersive estimate for periodic discrete Schr\"odinger operators on the line with optimal rate of decay. Additionally, by standard methods, we deduce dispersive estimates for the discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with small initial data and suitable nonlinearity when the underlying Hamiltonian is periodic.

On the Spectra of Sieved Schr\"odinger Operators

We give a family of examples of discrete Schr\"odinger operators whose spectral dimension is not invariant under sieving. The examples are produced from the Fibonacci Hamiltonian, which is one of the main models of a one-dimensional quasicrystal. We also give a family of examples in which the local Hausdorff dimension tends to zero in some parts of the spectrum as the sieving parameter is sent to infinity.

Thin Spectra for Periodic and Ergodic Word Models

We establish a new and simple criterion that suffices to generate many spectral gaps for periodic word models. This leads to new examples of ergodic Schr\"odinger operators with Cantor spectra having zero Hausdorff dimension that simultaneously may have arbitrarily small supremum norm together with arbitrarily long runs on which the potential vanishes.

Gap Labels and Asymptotic Gap Opening for Full Shifts

We discuss gap labelling for operators generated by the full shift over a compact subset of the real line. The set of Johnson--Schwartzman gap labels is the algebra generated by weights of clopen subsets of the support of the single-site distribution. Due to the presence of a dense set of periodic orbits, it is impossible to find a sampling function for which all gaps allowed by the gap labelling theorem open simultaneously. Nevertheless, for a suitable choice of the single-site distribution, we show that for generic sampling functions, every spectral gap opens in the large-coupling limit. Furthermore, we show that for other choices of weights there are gaps that cannot open for purely diagonal operators.

Mobility edges in pseudo-unitary quasiperiodic quantum walks

We introduce a Floquet quasicrystal that simulates the motion of Bloch electrons in a homogeneous magnetic field in discrete time steps. We admit the hopping to be non-reciprocal which, via a generalized Aubry duality, leads us to push the phase that parametrizes the synthetic dimension off of the real axis. This breaks unitarity, but we show that the model is still ``pseudo-unitary''. We unveil a novel mobility edge between a metallic and an insulating phase that sharply divides the parameter space. Moreover, for the first time, we observe a second transition that appears to be unique to the discrete-time setting. We quantify both phase transitions and relate them to properties of the spectrum. If the hopping is reciprocal either in the lattice direction or the synthetic dimension, the model is $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric, and the spectrum is confined to the unit circle up to a critical point. At this critical point, $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry is spontaneously broken and the spectrum leaves the unit circle. This transition is topological and measured by a spectral winding number.

Computing Spectral Size: Rigorous Algorithms and the Limits of Computation

Many structures in mathematical physics and dynamics exhibit intricate fractal geometry. Such behavior appears prominently in quantum mechanics and materials science through spectra of aperiodic and quasicrystalline operators, where questions of ``size'' (Lebesgue measure, fractal dimension, spectral gaps, etc.) are central. Yet the lack of rigorous computational tools for analyzing these quantities limits both theory and application. Na\"ive truncation often fails, and there is no overarching framework to explain what can, and cannot, be computed. We develop a unified program for the rigorous computation of spectral size for bounded self-adjoint operators, based on local spectral exclusions and adaptive covers. This constructive framework yields algorithmically optimal methods (under natural computational assumptions) that bridge spectral theory with computation to address problems previously deemed intractable. Their complexity is classified within the Solvability Complexity Index (SCI) hierarchy, extending Smale's program on the limits of computation. Sharp computational lower bounds are established through impossibility results for limit-periodic Schr\"odinger operators constructed from adversarial potentials. The methods enable state-of-the-art rigorous computations for one- and two-dimensional aperiodic systems, and pinpoint problems where numerics can feed directly into computer-assisted proofs. Beyond spectral analysis, they apply broadly to computing measures of size for general closed sets, opening new directions in the computational study of complex geometric structures.

Absence of Bound States for Quantum Walks and CMV Matrices via Reflections

We give a criterion based on reflection symmetries in the spirit of Jitomirskaya--Simon to show absence of point spectrum for (split-step) quantum walks and Cantero--Moral--Vel\'azquez (CMV) matrices. To accomplish this, we use some ideas from a recent paper by the authors and their collaborators to implement suitable reflection symmetries for such operators. We give several applications. For instance, we deduce arithmetic delocalization in the phase for the unitary almost-Mathieu operator and singular continuous spectrum for generic CMV matrices generated by the Thue--Morse subshift.

On the Number of Closed Gaps of Discrete Periodic One-Dimensional Operators

From the general inverse theory of periodic Jacobi matrices, it is known that a periodic Jacobi matrix of minimal period $p \geq 2$ may have at most $p-2$ closed spectral gaps. We discuss the maximal number of closed gaps for one-dimensional periodic discrete Schr\"odinger operators of period $p$. We prove nontrivial upper and lower bounds on this quantity for large $p$ and compute it exactly for $p \leq 6$. Among our results, we show that a discrete Schr\"odinger operator of period four or five may have at most a single closed gap, and we characterize exactly which potentials may exhibit a closed gap. For period six, we show that at most two gaps may close. In all cases in which the maximal number of closed gaps is computed, it is seen to be strictly smaller than $p-2$, the bound guaranteed by the inverse theory. We also discuss similar results for purely off-diagonal Jacobi matrices.

Exact mobility edges for almost-periodic CMV matrices via gauge symmetries

We investigate the symmetries of so-called generalized extended CMV matrices. It is well-documented that problems involving reflection symmetries of standard extended CMV matrices can be subtle. We show how to deal with this in an elegant fashion by passing to the class of generalized extended CMV matrices via explicit diagonal unitaries in the spirit of Cantero-Gr\"unbaum-Moral-Vel\'azquez. As an application of these ideas, we construct an explicit family of almost-periodic CMV matrices, which we call the mosaic unitary almost-Mathieu operator, and prove the occurrence of exact mobility edges. That is, we show the existence of energies that separate spectral regions with absolutely continuous and pure point spectrum and exactly calculate them.

Algebraic Properties of the Fermi Variety for Periodic Graph Operators

We present a method to estimate the number of irreducible components of the Fermi varieties of periodic Schr\"odinger operators on graphs in terms of suitable asymptotics. Our main theorem is an abstract bound for the number of irreducible components of Laurent polynomials in terms of such asymptotics. We then show how the abstract bound implies irreducibility in many lattices of interest, including examples with more than one vertex in the fundamental cell such as the Lieb lattice as well as certain models obtained by the process of graph decoration.

The Schwartzman Group of an Affine Transformation

We compute the Schwartzman group associated with an ergodic affine automorphism of a compact connected abelian group given by the composition of an automorphism of the group and a translation by an element in the path component of the identity. We show that the Schwartzman group can be characterized by evaluating the invariant characters of the automorphism at the group element by which one translates. As a byproduct, we show that the set of labels associated with the doubling map on the dyadic solenoid is trivial, which in turn allows us to show that any ergodic family of Jacobi matrices defined over the doubling map has connected almost-sure essential spectrum.

Gap Labels for Zeros of the Partition Function of the 1D Ising Model via the Schwartzman Homomorphism

Inspired by the 1995 paper of Baake--Grimm--Pisani, we aim to explain the empirical observation that the distribution of Lee--Yang zeros corresponding to a one-dimensional Ising model appears to follow the gap labelling theorem. This follows by combining two main ingredients: first, the relation between the transfer matrix formalism for 1D Ising model and an ostensibly unrelated matrix formalism generating the Szeg\H{o} recursion for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle, and second, the gap labelling theorem for CMV matrices.

Discontinuities of the Integrated Density of States for Laplacians Associated with Penrose and Ammann-Beenker Tilings

Aperiodic substitution tilings provide popular models for quasicrystals, materials exhibiting aperiodic order. We study the graph Laplacian associated with four tilings from the mutual local derivability class of the Penrose tiling, as well as the Ammann--Beenker tiling. In each case we exhibit locally-supported eigenfunctions, which necessarily cause jump discontinuities in the integrated density of states for these models. By bounding the multiplicities of these locally-supported modes, in several cases we provide concrete lower bounds on this jump. These results suggest a host of questions about spectral properties of the Laplacian on aperiodic tilings, which we collect at the end of the paper.
