PCSCNet: Fast 3D Semantic Segmentation of LiDAR Point Cloud for Autonomous Car using Point Convolution and Sparse Convolution Network

The autonomous car must recognize the driving environment quickly for safe driving. As the Light Detection And Range (LiDAR) sensor is widely used in the autonomous car, fast semantic segmentation of LiDAR point cloud, which is the point-wise classification of the point cloud within the sensor framerate, has attracted attention in recognition of the driving environment. Although the voxel and fusion-based semantic segmentation models are the state-of-the-art model in point cloud semantic segmentation recently, their real-time performance suffer from high computational load due to high voxel resolution. In this paper, we propose the fast voxel-based semantic segmentation model using Point Convolution and 3D Sparse Convolution (PCSCNet). The proposed model is designed to outperform at both high and low voxel resolution using point convolution-based feature extraction. Moreover, the proposed model accelerates the feature propagation using 3D sparse convolution after the feature extraction. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art real-time models in semantic segmentation of SemanticKITTI and nuScenes, and achieves the real-time performance in LiDAR point cloud inference.

Mithril: Cooperative Row Hammer Protection on Commodity DRAM Leveraging Managed Refresh

Since its public introduction in the mid-2010s, the Row Hammer (RH) phenomenon has drawn significant attention from the research community due to its security implications. Although many RH-protection schemes have been proposed by processor vendors, DRAM manufacturers, and academia, they still have shortcomings. Solutions implemented in the memory controller (MC) incur increasingly higher costs due to their conservative design for the worst case in terms of the number of DRAM banks and RH threshold to support. Meanwhile, DRAM-side implementation either has a limited time margin for RH-protection measures or requires extensive modifications to the standard DRAM interface. Recently, a new command for RH-protection has been introduced in the DDR5/LPDDR5 standards, referred to as refresh management (RFM). RFM enables the separation of the tasks for RHprotection to both MC and DRAM by having the former generate an RFM command at a specific activation frequency and the latter take proper RH-protection measures within a given time window. Although promising, no existing study presents and analyzes RFM-based solutions for RH-protection. In this paper, we propose Mithril, the first RFM interfacecompatible, DRAM-MC cooperative RH-protection scheme providing deterministic protection guarantees. Mithril has minimal energy overheads for common use cases without adversarial memory access patterns. We also introduce Mithril+, an optional extension to provide minimal performance overheads at the expense of a tiny modification to the MC, while utilizing existing DRAM commands.

ECO: Enabling Energy-Neutral IoT Devices through Runtime Allocation of Harvested Energy

Energy harvesting offers an attractive and promising mechanism to power low-energy devices. However, it alone is insufficient to enable an energy-neutral operation, which can eliminate tedious battery charging and replacement requirements. Achieving an energy-neutral operation is challenging since the uncertainties in harvested energy undermine the quality of service requirements. To address this challenge, we present a runtime energy-allocation framework that optimizes the utility of the target device under energy constraints using a rollout algorithm, which is a sequential approach to solve dynamic optimization problems. The proposed framework uses an efficient iterative algorithm to compute initial energy allocations at the beginning of a day. The initial allocations are then corrected at every interval to compensate for the deviations from the expected energy harvesting pattern. We evaluate this framework using solar and motion energy harvesting modalities and American Time Use Survey data from 4772 different users. Compared to prior techniques, the proposed framework achieves up to 35% higher utility even under energy-limited scenarios. Moreover, measurements on a wearable device prototype show that the proposed framework has 1000x smaller energy overhead than iterative approaches with a negligible loss in utility.

Demonstration of hybrid high-Q hexagonal boron nitride microresonators

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a wide bandgap van der Waals material that is emerging as a powerful platform for quantum optics and nanophotonics. In this work, we demonstrate whispering gallery mode silica microresonators hybridized with thin layers of epitaxially grown hBN that exhibit high optical quality factor $> 7 \times 10^5$. Measurements of the effect of hBN thickness on optical $Q$ and comparison with a theoretical model allows the linear optical absorption coefficient of the hBN films to be estimated. These high-$Q$ devices will be useful for applications in quantum and nonlinear optics, and their hybridized geometry provides a sensitive platform for evaluating losses in hBN and other 2D materials.

General Heuristics for Nonconvex Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming

We introduce the Suggest-and-Improve framework for general nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic programs (QCQPs). Using this framework, we generalize a number of known methods and provide heuristics to get approximate solutions to QCQPs for which no specialized methods are available. We also introduce an open-source Python package QCQP, which implements the heuristics discussed in the paper.

A Semidefinite Programming Method for Integer Convex Quadratic Minimization

We consider the NP-hard problem of minimizing a convex quadratic function over the integer lattice ${\bf Z}^n$. We present a simple semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation for obtaining a nontrivial lower bound on the optimal value of the problem. By interpreting the solution to the SDP relaxation probabilistically, we obtain a randomized algorithm for finding good suboptimal solutions, and thus an upper bound on the optimal value. The effectiveness of the method is shown for numerical problem instances of various sizes.

Single-Shot 3D Diffractive Imaging of Core-Shell Nanoparticles with Elemental Specificity

We report 3D coherent diffractive imaging of Au/Pd core-shell nanoparticles with 6 nm resolution on 5-6 femtosecond timescales. We measured single-shot diffraction patterns of core-shell nanoparticles using very intense and short x-ray free electron laser pulses. By taking advantage of the curvature of the Ewald sphere and the symmetry of the nanoparticle, we reconstructed the 3D electron density of 34 core-shell structures from single-shot diffraction patterns. We determined the size of the Au core and the thickness of the Pd shell to be 65.0 +/- 1.0 nm and 4.0 +/- 0.5 nm, respectively, and identified the 3D elemental distribution inside the nanoparticles with an accuracy better than 2%. We anticipate this method can be used for quantitative 3D imaging of symmetrical nanostructures and virus particles.

Concave Quadratic Cuts for Mixed-Integer Quadratic Problems

The technique of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation can be used to obtain a nontrivial bound on the optimal value of a nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP). We explore concave quadratic inequalities that hold for any vector in the integer lattice ${\bf Z}^n$, and show that adding these inequalities to a mixed-integer nonconvex QCQP can improve the SDP-based bound on the optimal value. This scheme is tested using several numerical problem instances of the max-cut problem and the integer least squares problem.

Sparsity-Preserving Difference of Positive Semidefinite Matrix Representation of Indefinite Matrices

We consider the problem of writing an arbitrary symmetric matrix as the difference of two positive semidefinite matrices. We start with simple ideas such as eigenvalue decomposition. Then, we develop a simple adaptation of the Cholesky that returns a difference-of-Cholesky representation of indefinite matrices. Heuristics that promote sparsity can be applied directly to this modification.

Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer in a Two-User OFDM Interference Channel

In this paper, we study the Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) in a Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) two-user Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) Interference Channel (IFC). We assume that the transmitters are non-cooperative and have perfect knowledge of the local Channel State Information (CSI). We show that the necessary condition for the optimal transmission strategy at high SNR is for the energy transmitter to transmit its signal by allocating its transmit power on a single subcarrier. Accordingly, we propose a one-subcarrier selection method for the energy transmitter and identify the achievable rate-energy region. In addition, we further enlarge the achievable rate-energy region by enabling a basic form of transmitter cooperation where messages are exchanged to inform the energy transmitter about the subcarriers unutilized by the information transmitter.

Multi-user Linear Precoding for Multi-polarized Massive MIMO System under Imperfect CSIT

The space limitation and the channel acquisition prevent Massive MIMO from being easily deployed in a practical setup. Motivated by current deployments of LTE-Advanced, the use of multi-polarized antennas can be an efficient solution to address the space constraint. Furthermore, the dual-structured precoding, in which a preprocessing based on the spatial correlation and a subsequent linear precoding based on the short-term channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) are concatenated, can reduce the feedback overhead efficiently. By grouping and preprocessing spatially correlated mobile stations (MSs), the dimension of the precoding signal space is reduced and the corresponding short-term CSIT dimension is reduced. In this paper, to reduce the feedback overhead further, we propose a dual-structured multi-user linear precoding, in which the subgrouping method based on co-polarization is additionally applied to the spatially grouped MSs in the preprocessing stage. Furthermore, under imperfect CSIT, the proposed scheme is asymptotically analyzed based on random matrix theory. By investigating the behavior of the asymptotic performance, we also propose a new dual-structured precoding in which the precoding mode is switched between two dual-structured precoding strategies with 1) the preprocessing based only on the spatial correlation and 2) the preprocessing based on both the spatial correlation and polarization. Finally, we extend it to 3D dual-structured precoding.

Joint Wireless Information and Energy Transfer with Reduced Feedback in MIMO Interference Channels

To determine the transmission strategy for joint wireless information and energy transfer (JWIET) in the MIMO interference channel (IFC), the information access point (IAP) and energy access point (EAP) require the channel state information (CSI) of their associated links to both the information-decoding (ID) mobile stations (MSs) and energy-harvesting (EH) MSs (so-called local CSI). In this paper, to reduce th e feedback overhead of MSs for the JWIET in two-user MIMO IFC, we propose a Geodesic energy beamforming scheme that requires partial CSI at the EAP. Furthermore, in the two-user MIMO IFC, it is proved that the Geodesic energy beamforming is the optimal strategy. By adding a rank-one constraint on the transmit signal covariance of IAP, we can further reduce the feedback overhead to IAP by exploiting Geodesic information beamforming. Under the rank-one constraint of IAP's transmit signal, we prove that Geodesic information/energy beamforming approach is the optimal strategy for JWIET in the two-user MIMO IFC. We also discuss the extension of the proposed rank-one Geodesic information/energy beamforming strategies to general K-user MIMO IFC. Finally, by analyzing the achievable rate-energy performance statistically under imperfect partial CSIT, we propose an adaptive bit allocation strategy for both EH MS and ID MS.

MIMO Broadcasting for Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer: Weighted MMSE Approaches

We consider simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in MIMO Broadcast networks where one energy harvesting (EH) user and one information decoding (ID) user share the same time and frequency resource. In contrast to previous SWIPT systems based on the information rate, this paper addresses the problem in terms of the weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) criterion. First, we formulate the WMMSE-SWIPT problem which minimizes the weighted sum-MSE of the message signal arrived at the ID user, while satisfying the requirement on the energy that can be harvested from the signal at the EH user. Then, we propose the optimal precoder structure of the problem and identify the best possible MSE-energy tradeoff region through the alternative update of the linear precoder at the transmitter with the linear receiver at the ID user. From the derived solution, several interesting observations are made compared to the conventional SWIPT designs.

Joint Wireless Information and Energy Transfer in a K-User MIMO Interference Channel

Recently, joint wireless information and energy transfer (JWIET) methods have been proposed to relieve the battery limitation of wireless devices. However, the JWIET in a general K-user MIMO interference channel (IFC) has been unexplored so far. In this paper, we investigate for the first time the JWIET in K-user MIMO IFC, in which receivers either decode the incoming information data (information decoding, ID) or harvest the RF energy (energy harvesting, EH). In the K-user IFC, we consider three different scenarios according to the receiver mode -- i) multiple EH receivers and a single ID receiver, ii) multiple IDs and a single EH, and iii) multiple IDs and multiple EHs. For all scenarios, we have found a common necessary condition of the optimal transmission strategy and, accordingly, developed the transmission strategy that satisfies the common necessary condition, in which all the transmitters transferring energy exploit a rank-one energy beamforming. Furthermore, we have also proposed an iterative algorithm to optimize the covariance matrices of the transmitters that transfer information and the powers of the energy beamforming transmitters simultaneously, and identified the corresponding achievable rate-energy tradeoff region. Finally, we have shown that by selecting EH receivers according to their signal-to-leakage-and-harvested energy-ratio (SLER), we can improve the achievable rate-energy region further.

Single-shot 3D structure determination of nanocrystals with femtosecond X-ray free electron laser pulses

Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) using synchrotron radiation, X-ray free electron lasers (X-FELs), high harmonic generation, soft X-ray lasers, and optical lasers has found broad applications across several disciplines. An active research direction in CDI is to determine the structure of single particles with intense, femtosecond X-FEL pulses based on diffraction-before-destruction scheme. However, single-shot 3D structure determination has not been experimentally realized yet. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of single-shot 3D structure determination of individual nanocrystals using ~10 femtosecond X-FEL pulses. Coherent diffraction patterns are collected from high-index-faceted nanocrystals, each struck by a single X-FEL pulse. Taking advantage of the symmetry of the nanocrystal, we reconstruct the 3D structure of each nanocrystal from a single-shot diffraction pattern at ~5.5 nm resolution. As symmetry exists in many nanocrystals and virus particles, this method can be applied to 3D structure studies of such particles at nanometer resolution on femtosecond time scales.

Joint Wireless Information and Energy Transfer in a Two-User MIMO Interference Channel

This paper investigates joint wireless information and energy transfer in a two-user MIMO interference channel, in which each receiver either decodes the incoming information data (information decoding, ID) or harvests the RF energy (energy harvesting, EH) to operate with a potentially perpetual energy supply. In the two-user interference channel, we have four different scenarios according to the receiver mode -- ($ID_1$, $ID_2$), ($EH_1$, $EH_2$), ($EH_1$, $ID_2$), and ($ID_1$, $EH_2$). While the maximum information bit rate is unknown and finding the optimal transmission strategy is still open for ($ID_1$, $ID_2$), we have derived the optimal transmission strategy achieving the maximum harvested energy for ($EH_1$, $EH_2$). For ($EH_1$, $ID_2$), and ($ID_1$, $EH_2$), we find a necessary condition of the optimal transmission strategy and, accordingly, identify the achievable rate-energy (R-E) tradeoff region for two transmission strategies that satisfy the necessary condition - maximum energy beamforming (MEB) and minimum leakage beamforming (MLB). Furthermore, a new transmission strategy satisfying the necessary condition - signal-to-leakage-and-energy ratio (SLER) maximization beamforming - is proposed and shown to exhibit a better R-E region than the MEB and the MLB strategies. Finally, we propose a mode scheduling method to switch between ($EH_1$, $ID_2$) and ($ID_1$, $EH_2$) based on the SLER.
