Families of Hitchin Systems in Type-D

The Coulomb branch geometry of a 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT is encoded in the data of a complex integrable system. In class-S, this is the Hitchin System (of ADE type) on the punctured curves $C$ on which we compactified from 6d to 4d. As we vary the complex structure of $C$, these fit together to form a (nontrivial!) bundle of Hitchin systems over the moduli space of complex structures of $C$ (the ``conformal manifold'' of the family of SCFTs). We carry out that construction for type-D. Compared to the type-A case, the construction is much more complicated because of local constraints at the punctures. Those local constraints were studied in [1]. Here, we work out their implications for the global bundle of spectral (Seiberg-Witten) curves.

Even More On Twisted $A_{2n}$ Class-S Theories

This paper is a continuation of our investigation into the Coulomb branches of twisted $A_{2n}$ of class-S. In arXiv:2411.17675, we found predictions for the contributions of twisted punctures to the graded dimensions of the Coulomb branch, based on the behaviour under nilpotent Higgsings and S-duality. While surprisingly powerful, these arguments were indirect. Here, we take a different approach: we define precisely the nature of the automorphism under which the twisted punctures are twisted (in particular, it is order-4, not order-2). From that, we find the local constraints satisfied by the Laurent coefficients of the invariant polynomials in the Higgs field, for all twisted punctures in $A_{2n}$, for all n. A crucial role is played by a new (at least, new in physics) order-reversing map on the set of nilpotent orbits in sp(n). Finally, we construct several examples of Seiberg-Witten curves for 3-punctured spheres in these theories.

On Twisted $A_{2n}$ Class-S Theories

In this paper, we investigate the twisted $A_{2n}$ sector of class-S theories. Heretofore, the Coulomb branches of such theories have been poorly understood. In this, and a companion paper, we make progress in our understanding of them. In particular, we find a formula for the dimension of the Coulomb branch of any twisted $A_{2n}$ class-S theory. Deferring a systematic analysis to the companion paper, we here determine many contributions of punctures to the graded Coulomb branch dimensions, and in some low rank cases, all of them. We are then able to identify a variety of known 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs with twisted $A_{2n}$ theories, and reproduce many of their known properties, such as S-duality amongst certain Argyres-Douglas theories.

On Generalized Pfaffians

The determinant of an anti-symmetric matrix $g$ is the square of its Pfaffian, which like the determinant is a polynomial in the entries of $g$. Studies of certain super conformal field theories (of class S) suggested a conjectural generalization of this, predicting that each of a series of other polynomials in the entries of $g$ also admit polynomial square roots. Among other consequences, this conjecture led to a characterization of the local Hitchin image for type D. Several important special cases had been established previously. In this paper we prove the conjecture in full.

The Hitchin Image in Type-D

Motivated by their appearance as Coulomb branch geometries of Class S theories, we study the image of the local Hitchin map in tame Hitchin systems of type-D with residue in a special nilpotent orbit $\mathcal{O}_H$. We describe two important features which distinguish it from the type A case studied in arXiv:2008.01020. The first feature, which we term even type constraints, arise iff the partition label $[\mathcal{O}_H]$ has even parts. In this case, our Hitchin image is non-singular and thus different from the one studied by Baraglia and Kamgarpour. We argue that our Hitchin image always globalizes to being the Hitchin base of an integrable system. The second feature, which we term odd type constraints, is related to a particular finite group $\overline{A}_b(\mathcal{O}_H)$ being non-trivial. When this finite group is non-trivial, we have $\mid \overline{A}_b \mid$ choices for the local Hitchin base. Additionally, we also show that the finite group $\overline{A}_b(\mathcal{O}_H)$ encodes the size of the dual special piece.

Spacetime Subsystem Symmetries

One characteristic feature of many fractonic lattice models, and a defining property of the exotic field theories developed to describe them, are subsystem symmetries including a conservation of not just net electric charge but also electric dipole moments or charges living on submanifolds. So far all such theories were based on internal subsystem symmetries. In this work we generalize the notion of subsystem symmetries to system with subsystem spacetime symmetries with locally conserved energies.

Isomorphisms of 4d N=2 SCFTs from 6d

There exist 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs in class $\mathcal{S}$ which have different constructions as punctured Riemann surfaces, but which nevertheless appear to describe the same physics. Some of these class $\mathcal{S}$ theories have an alternative construction as torus-compactifications of 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs. We demonstrate that the 6d SCFTs are isomorphic. Each 6d SCFT in question can be obtained from a parent 6d SCFT by Higgs branch renormalization group flow, and the parent theory possesses a discrete symmetry under which the relevant Higgs branch flows are exchanged. The existence of this discrete symmetry, which may be embedded in an enhanced continuous symmetry, proves that the original pair of class $\mathcal{S}$ theories are, in fact, isomorphic.

Current Algebra Levels in the $E_8$ Theory

The class-S theories of type $E_8$ were analyzed in \cite{Chacaltana:2018vhp}. The basic building blocks consisted of 49,836 isolated SCFTs (three-punctured spheres). In 244 cases, there were undetermined levels for the flavour symmetry current algebra. Here, we rectify that omission. Using S-duality and nilpotent Higgsing we compute the levels of 235 of the 244. There remain 9 three-punctured spheres with unknown levels. Along the way, we provide a detailed discussion of the Drinfeld-Sokolov reduction of the VOA, which captures various features of the Higgs branch RG flows arising from giving a VEV to a nilpotent moment map.

Distinguishing 6d (1,0) SCFTs: an extension to the geometric construction

We provide a new extension to the geometric construction of 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs that encapsulates Higgs branch structures with identical global symmetry but different spectra. In particular, we find that there exist distinct 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs that may appear to share their tensor branch description, flavor symmetry algebras, and central charges. For example, such subtleties arise for the very even nilpotent Higgsing of $(\mathfrak{so}_{4k}, \mathfrak{so}_{4k})$ conformal matter; we propose a method to predict at which conformal dimension the Higgs branch operators of the two theories differ via augmenting the tensor branch description with the Higgs branch chiral ring generators of the building block theories. Torus compactifications of these 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs give rise to 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs of class $\mathcal{S}$ and the Higgs branch of such 4d theories are captured via the Hall--Littlewood index. We confirm that the resulting 4d theories indeed differ in their spectra in the predicted conformal dimension from their Hall--Littlewood indices. We highlight how this ambiguity in the tensor branch description arises beyond the very even nilpotent Higgsing of $(\mathfrak{so}_{4k}, \mathfrak{so}_{4k})$ conformal matter, and hence should be understood for more general classes of 6d $(1,0)$ SCFTs.

Two Applications of Nilpotent Higgsing in Class-S

We introduce a class of Higgs-branch RG flows in theories of class-S, which flow between $d=4$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs of the same ADE type. We discuss two applications of this class of RG flows: 1) determining the current-algebra levels in SCFTs where they were previously unknown - a program we carry out for the class-S theories of type $E_6$ and $E_7$ - and 2) constructing a multitude of examples of pairs of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs whose "conventional invariants" coincide. We disprove the conjecture of [1] that the global form of the flavour symmetry group is a reliable diagnostic for determining when two such theories are isomorphic.

Nonabelian Twists of the $D_4$ Theory

We study theories of type $D_4$ in class-S, with nonabelian outer-automorphism twists around various cycles of the punctured Riemann surface $C$. We propose an extension of previous formul\ae\ for the superconformal index to cover this case and classify the SCFTs corresponding to fixtures (3-punctured spheres). We then go on to study families of SCFTs corresponding to once-punctured tori and 4-punctured spheres. These exhibit new behaviours, not seen in previous investigations. In particular, the generic theory with 4 punctures on the sphere from non-commuting $\mathbb{Z}_2$ twisted sectors has six distinct weakly-coupled descriptions.

Interacting Fractons in 2+1-Dimensional Quantum Field Theory

We analyze, in perturbation theory, a theory of weakly interacting fractons and non-relativistic fermions in a 2+1 dimensional Quantum Field Theory. In particular we compute the 1-loop corrections to the self energies and interaction vertex, and calculate the associated 1-loop Renormalization Group flows of the coupling constants. Surprisingly, we find that the fracton-fermion coupling does not flow due to an emergent coordinate-dependent symmetry of the effective Lagrangian, making this model a well-defined quantum field theory. We provide additional discussions on the regularization and renormalization of interacting fractonic theories, as well as both qualitative and quantitative remarks regarding the theory at finite temperature and finite chemical potential.

Spontaneously Broken Subsystem Symmetries

We investigate the spontaneous breaking of subsystem symmetries directly in the context of continuum field theories by calculating the correlation function of charged operators. Our methods confirm the lack of spontaneous symmetry breaking in some of the existing continuum field theories with subsystem symmetries, as had previously been established based on a careful analysis of the spectrum. We present some novel continuum field theory constructions that do exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking whenever allowed by general principles. These interesting patterns of symmetry breaking occur despite the fact that all the theories we study are non-interacting.

Distinquishing 4d N=2 SCFTs

We construct a family of examples of pairs of 4d N=2 SCFTs whose graded Coulomb branch dimensions, Weyl-anomaly coefficients and flavour symmetry algebras and levels coincide, but which are nonetheless distinct SCFTs. The difference (detectable by the superconformal index) can occur at arbitrarily high order. We argue that it is, however, reflected in a difference in the global form of the flavour symmetry groups.

A Note on S.Weinberg, "Massless Particles in Higher Dimensions"

In [1], Weinberg made a conjecture about the little-group representations of massless particles that can be created out of the vacuum by the action of a local operator in $d$ dimensions, generalizing his old result [2] in $d=4$. In this note, I prove his conjecture and extend it to arbitrary irreps of $so(1,d-1)$.

Families of Hitchin systems and N=2 theories

Motivated by the connection to 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories, we study the global behavior of families of tamely-ramified $SL_N$ Hitchin integrable systems as the underlying curve varies over the Deligne-Mumford moduli space of stable pointed curves. In particular, we describe a flat degeneration of the Hitchin system to a nodal base curve and show that the behaviour of the integrable system at the node is partially encoded in a pair $(O,H)$ where $O$ is a nilpotent orbit and $H$ is a simple Lie subgroup of $F_{O}$, the flavour symmetry group associated to $O$. The family of Hitchin systems is nontrivially-fibered over the Deligne-Mumford moduli space. We prove a non-obvious result that the Hitchin bases fit together to form a vector bundle over the compactified moduli space. For the particular case of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,4}$, we compute this vector bundle explicitly. Finally, we give a classification of the allowed pairs $(O,H)$ that can arise for any given $N$.

On the BPS Spectrum of the Rank-1 Minahan-Nemeschansky Theories

The F-theory realization of the rank-1 Minahan Nemeschansky (MN) $E_6$, $E_7$ and $E_8$ theories leads to a description of the BPS states on the Coulomb branch in terms of Type IIB $(p,q)$-string networks. Subject to a simple ansatz for the types of networks which can occur, we study the representations of the flavor symmetry group which occur in the BPS spectrum. The results we find for the $E_6$ and $E_7$ theories are in perfect agreement with previous calculations by other methods (in particular, we find that arbitrarily large representations occur), but our scheme is easier to implement and more computationally efficient. The string network picture also gives a possible explanation of the experimental observation that in rank-1 MN theories, BPS states whose charge is $n$ times a primitive charge occur with BPS index divisible by $(-1)^{n+1} n$.

Masses, Sheets and Rigid SCFTs

We study mass deformations of certain three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ Superconformal Field Theories (SCFTs) that have come to be called $T^\rho[G]$ theories. These are associated to tame defects of the six dimensional $(0,2)$ SCFT $X[\mathfrak{j}]$ for $\mathfrak{j}=A,D,E$. We describe these deformations using a refined version of the theory of sheets, a subject of interest in Geometric Representation Theory. In mathematical terms, we parameterize local mass-like deformations of the tamely ramified Hitchin integrable system and identify the subset of the deformations that do admit an interpretation as a mass deformation for the theories under consideration. We point out the existence of non-trivial Rigid SCFTs among these theories. We classify the Rigid theories within this set of SCFTs and give a description of their Higgs and Coulomb branches. We then study the implications for the endpoints of RG flows triggered by mass deformations in these 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ theories. Finally, we discuss connections with the recently proposed idea of Symplectic Duality and describe some conjectures about its action.
