One marked-sum law determines random mass partitions and $Ξ$-coalescents

Let $P=(P_j)$ be a random mass partition and let $(X_j)$ be iid real marks, independent of $P$. We construct a fixed mark distribution for which the law of the real random variable $\sum_j P_j X_j$ determines the law of $P$ on the Kingman simplex. The observation map is an affine topological embedding. One construction uses an infinite convolution of stable laws with rationally independent indices; for every prescribed $q\in(0,\infty)$, a determining mark can instead be chosen symmetric, centered, compound Poisson, and in $L^q$. At any known positive time, the law of the ranked block frequencies of a $Ξ$-coalescent started from singletons$\unicode{x2014}$equivalently, the exchangeable partition probability functions of all its finite restrictions at that time$\unicode{x2014}$determines the finite collision measure $Ξ$. Composing the two results therefore identifies $Ξ$ from the law of one real marked sum. Within the $Λ$ subclass, an asymmetric Bernoulli coloring determines the normalized collision measure, as does any centered nonconstant mark whose absolute moment of some order $a\in(1,4)$ is finite while every higher absolute moment is infinite. We also prove that, for every $d\ge 2$, a pair of distinct laws supported on strictly decreasing $(d+1)$-tuples of positive masses with a fixed total mass remains indistinguishable for every mark supported on at most $d$ points. For every fixed number $d\ge 2$ of types, this obstruction yields distinct normalized collision measures with the same mutation-free neutral $d$-type $Ξ$-Fleming$\unicode{x2013}$Viot transition semigroup.

Breiman's conjecture and normalized jumps of subordinators

We prove Breiman's conjecture under the first-moment assumption. Let $Y_1,Y_2,\ldots$ be iid nonnegative random variables with $\mathbb P\{Y_1>0\}>0$, normalized by their sum. If the resulting randomly weighted sum converges to a nondegenerate law for one fixed integrable, nonconstant mark distribution, then the tail of $Y_1$ is regularly varying. More generally, any full-sequence limit for one such mark, including a constant limit, determines the asymptotic regime of the ranked weights: one big jump, a Poisson$\unicode{x2013}$Dirichlet partition, or dust. It consequently determines the limit for every integrable mark, with convergence in the $1$-Wasserstein metric, and the limits of independently marked empirical measures. The inverse step is based on a countable power-sum theorem: signed Fourier$\unicode{x2013}$Mellin identities extract a positive limiting expected power sum from one nondegenerate marked limit, without a moment of order greater than one. A ratio$\unicode{x2013}$Tauberian argument then recovers the tail index. The same method classifies ratios formed from the marked jumps of a nonzero, unkilled, driftless subordinator at zero and at infinity, assuming infinite activity at zero. A nondegenerate limit is equivalent to regular variation of the Lévy tail with index in $(-1,0]$. A constant limit is equivalent to disappearance of the largest normalized jump, or, analytically, to slow variation of the integrated Lévy tail. The latter condition need not imply regular variation of the Lévy tail with index $-1$. A Cauchy-mark example shows that the conclusion can fail without integrability of the mark.

Dimension comparison for Student's statistic under symmetric unimodality

Let $q_n(r)$ denote the tail probability at $r$ of the self-normalized sum of $n$ independent centered uniform variables. At $r=3$, the first distribution-sensitive term in the two-sided Edgeworth expansion of Student's statistic vanishes. We evaluate the expansion at the common moving boundary $r_n=3+λ/n$ in dimensions $n$ and $n-k$. Uniformly over deletion ranks retaining a fixed positive fraction of observations, the first nonzero difference converges to an explicit phase surface $H_δ(λ)$; its zero curve unifies fixed, sublinear and fixed-fraction deletions, with tangent crossing $12/35$. Through the Khintchine scale-mixture representation, this comparison yields a single compactly supported $C^\infty$ symmetric unimodal parent, independent of $n$, whose Student tail exceeds the equal-scale uniform tail for all sufficiently large $n$ along nominal levels tending to $2\{1-Φ(\sqrt3)\}$ from below. In contrast, a quantile-ratio order shows that the uniform parent maximizes every even moment and every convergent even power series with nonnegative coefficients. We also derive the fixed-confidence dimension expansion and an exact reversal at $n=6$.
