The $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Index of a Pair of Pure States and the Topology of Interacting 1D Superconductors

We define a relative $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index $\mathcal{N}(\omega_1,\omega_2)$ for locally-comparable, parity-invariant pure states on a unital $C^*$-algebra. We prove that the index is well-defined, multiplicative, invariant under parity-preserving automorphisms, and locally constant in the norm topology. For the one-dimensional self-dual CAR algebra, we apply this construction to the half-chain automorphism $\sigma$ and define the many-body Majorana number $\mathcal{N}\sigma(\omega):=\mathcal{N}(\omega,\omega\circ\sigma)$ for parity-invariant $\sigma$-local pure states. In the quasi-free Hilbert--Schmidt regime, this index agrees with the usual single-body Majorana number. We then introduce symmetric local automorphism paths and prove that $\mathcal{N}_\sigma$ completely classifies the resulting automorphic-path-components. This automorphic-path equivalence retains the bulk Majorana number but may forget a relative zero-dimensional parity obstruction.

Euler Topological Metals in 1D

We give a rigorous one-dimensional formulation of Kane's transport proposal for probing the Euler characteristic of a Fermi sea. For a clean, translation-invariant continuum Hamiltonian with real-analytic dispersion, a Fermi sea confined to a finite momentum range, and nonzero Fermi velocity at every Fermi point, we analyze a particular Abel-regularized transport response (obtained by tracing over the Fermi sea) and prove that its large-time limit equals the Euler characteristic. We derive an explicit finite-time formula, show that quantization requires the large-time limit, and obtain a convergence rate under additional nonstationarity assumptions. We also prove the lattice analog, where the sharp commutator is trace-class and a completely filled band contributes zero. Finite-volume calculations illustrate the prescribed order of the thermodynamic and large-time limits.

Fractional Hall Conductance of Laughlin States from a Topological Index

We provide a rigorous Laughlin-pump argument that establishes the fractional quantization of the Hall conductance directly from the Laughlin state as a topological index. Our proof uses a recently defined index of a pair of pure states together with an infinite matrix product state analysis that is rigorous on a sufficiently thin cylinder. By virtue of the connection to an index, our result implies, in particular, that Laughlin states are representatives of topologically stable fractional quantum Hall phases.

Instantons in a Double-Well are Poisson Distributed

We give a rigorous realization of the dilute instanton picture for a semiclassical Schr\"odinger operator with a symmetric double-well potential on $\mathbb{R}^n$. Using a localized Feynman--Kac representation, we decompose the heat-kernel trace according to the number of passages made by a Brownian bridge between shrinking neighborhoods of the two wells. We identify the weight of one passage with a hopping coefficient $\rho_\lambda$, $\displaystyle \rho_\lambda = \int_{\partial\Omega} \left( \nabla\overline{\varphi_{\lambda,0}^{\Omega}}\, \varphi_{\lambda,0}^{-\Omega} - \overline{\varphi_{\lambda,0}^{\Omega}}\, \nabla\varphi_{\lambda,0}^{-\Omega} \right)\cdot\nu. $ On the exponentially long time scale $\beta=N/\lvert\rho_\lambda\rvert$, the number of passages converges, for every fixed $N>0$, to a Poisson random variable of mean $N$. We identify $-\frac{1}{\lambda}\log\lvert\rho_\lambda\rvert\to S(d,-d)$ and obtain $\displaystyle E_1(\lambda)-E_0(\lambda) = 2\lvert\rho_\lambda\rvert\left(1+o(1)\right). $ Thus the familiar instanton expansion of the double-well eigenvalue splitting emerges directly from a factorization of the heat-kernel trace.

Geometric bulk-edge correspondence for $\mathbb{Z}_2$-topological insulators

Fermionic time-reversal-invariant insulators in two dimensions--class AII in the Kitaev table--come in two topological phases. These phases are characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-valued invariant, the Fu-Kane-Mele index. We prove a geometric bulk-edge correspondence for curved interfaces: if two such insulators occupy complementary regions separated by a curved boundary, then the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ edge index of the interface system is the product, modulo two, of the difference of the two bulk $\mathbb{Z}_2$ indices and a geometric intersection number associated with the boundary and the measurement region. The argument is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ analogue of the curved-interface connection formula proved for Hall insulators in \cite{DZ24}.

Resolvent estimates for the Schr\"odinger operator with $L^\infty$ electric and magnetic potentials and applications to the local energy decay

We establish resolvent estimates that extend earlier results to a larger class of electric potentials $V\in L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^d;\mathbb{R})$, $d\ge 3$, and magnetic potentials $b\in L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^d;\mathbb{R}^d)$ such that $V(x), b(x)=O_k\left(|x|^{-k}\right)$, $|x|\gg 1$, for every integer $k$. More precisely, we prove estimates for the derivatives of the weighted resolvent of the corresponding magnetic Schr\"odinger operator, which are uniform with respect to both the spectral parameter and the order of derivation. We also show that these resolvent estimates still hold for the Dirichlet self-adjoint realization of the Schr\"odinger operator in the exterior of a non-trapping obstacle in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\ge 2$, provided the magnetic potential is supposed identically zero. As an application of these resolvent estimates, we obtain the rate of decay of the local energy of solutions to the corresponding wave equation. In particular, we show that for potentials satisfying $|V(x)|+|b(x)|\le Ce^{-c|x|^s}$, $c,C>0$, $0 0$, where $t\gg 1$ is the time variable.

Topological Classification of Insulators: III. Non-interacting Spectrally-Gapped Systems in All Dimensions

We study non-interacting electrons in disordered materials which exhibit a spectral gap, in each of the ten Altland--Zirnbauer symmetry classes, in all space dimensions. We define an appropriate space of Hamiltonians and a topology on it so that the so-called strong topological invariants become \emph{complete} invariants yielding the Kitaev periodic table, but now derived as the set of path-connected components of the space of Hamiltonians, rather than as $K$-theory groups. We thus confirm the conjecture (phrased e.g. in \cite{KatsuraKoma2018}) regarding a one-to-one correspondence between topological phases of gapped non-interacting systems and the respective Abelian groups $\{0\},\mathbb{Z},2\mathbb{Z},\mathbb{Z}_2$ in the spectral gap regime. The central conceptual point is that spherical locality and bulk non-triviality are the two structural hypotheses which make this non-stable statement true. Spherical locality provides the real-space asymptotic locality needed for the strong index pairings, while bulk non-triviality removes lower-dimensional or edge-type configurations which would otherwise create extra path-components. Once this phase space has been identified, the algebraic input is the standard $K$-theory of the associated Paschke-dual picture, and the remaining technical task is to lift that information to $\pi_0$ of symmetry-constrained projections and unitaries. These definitions of locality and bulk-non-triviality are expected to be the portable part of the argument in regimes, such as mobility gaps and interacting systems, where ordinary stabilized $K$-theory is not by itself the right formulation of the physical classification problem.

The Loring--Schulz-Baldes Spectral Localizer Revisited

The spectral localizer, introduced by Loring in 2015 and Loring and Schulz-Baldes in 2017, is a method to compute the (infinite volume) topological invariant of a quantum Hamiltonian on $\ZZ^d$, as the signature of the (finite) localizer matrix. We present a direct and elementary spectral-theoretic proof treating the $d=1$ and $d=2$ cases on an almost equal footing. Moreover, we re-interpret the localizer as a higher-dimensional topological insulator via the bulk-edge correspondence.

Magnetic Double-Wells: Lower Bounds on Tunneling

We study double-well systems with strong magnetic fields and deep potential wells. We present lower bounds on tunneling rates for generic values of the coupling constant. This result was recently announced and complements our recent counter-example construction which exhibits vanishing tunneling for specially-constructed double-well potentials.

Logarithmic wave decay for short range wavespeed perturbations with radial regularity

We establish logarithmic local energy decay for wave equations with a varying wavespeed in dimensions two and higher, where the wavespeed is assumed to be a short range perturbation of unity with mild radial regularity. The key ingredient is H\"older continuity of the weighted resolvent for real frequencies $\lambda$, modulo a logarithmic remainder in dimension two as $\lambda \to 0$. Our approach relies on a study of the resolvent in two distinct frequency regimes. In the low frequency regime, we derive an expansion for the resolvent using a Neumann series and properties of the free resolvent. For frequencies away from zero, we establish a uniform resolvent estimate by way of a Carleman estimate.

The index of a pair of pure states and the interacting integer quantum Hall effect

We introduce the index $\mathcal{N}(\omega_1,\omega_2)$ of a pair of pure states on a unital C*-algebra, which is a generalization of the notion of the index of a pair of projections on a Hilbert space. We then show that the Hall conductance associated with an invertible state $\omega$ of a two-dimensional interacting electronic system which is symmetric under $U(1)$ charge transformation may be written as the index $\mathcal{N}(\omega,\omega^D)$, where $\omega^D$ is obtained from $\omega$ by inserting a unit of magnetic flux. This exhibits the integrality and continuity properties of the Hall conductance in the context of general topological features of $\mathcal{N}$.

Lower Bounds on Quantum Tunneling for Excited States

We revisit the problem of quantum tunneling for a particle moving in the continuum, and in the absence of a magnetic field. In all spatial dimensions, we extend previous results to the case where the single-well potential satisfies reflection-symmetry.

Exponential local energy decay of solutions to the wave equation with $L^\infty$ electric and magnetic potentials

In this paper we prove sharp resolvent estimates for the magnetic Schr\"odinger operator in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\ge 3$, with $L^\infty$ short-range electric and magnetic potentials. As an application of the resolvent estimates, we obtain an exponential decay of the local energy of solutions to the wave equation with $L^\infty$ electric and magnetic potentials which decay exponentially at infinity, in all odd and even dimensions, provided the low frequencies are cut off in a suitable way. We also show that in odd dimensions there is no need to cut off the low frequencies in order to get an exponential local energy decay, provided we assume that zero is neither an eigenvalue nor a resonance.

Resolvent bounds for repulsive potentials

We prove limiting absorption resolvent bounds for the semiclassical Schr\"odinger operator with a repulsive potential in dimension $n\ge 3$, which may have a singularity at the origin. As an application, we obtain time decay for the weighted energy of the solution to the associated wave equation with a short range repulsive potential and compactly supported initial data.

Edge spectrum for truncated $\mathbb{Z}_2$-insulators

Fermionic time-reversal-invariant insulators in two dimensions -- class AII in the Kitaev table -- come in two different topological phases. These are characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index: the Fu-Kane-Mele index. We prove that if two such insulators with different indices occupy regions containing arbitrarily large balls, then the spectrum of the resulting operator fills the bulk spectral gap. Our argument follows a proof by contradiction developed in an earlier work by two of the authors for quantum Hall systems. It boils down to showing that the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index can be computed only from bulk information in sufficiently large balls. This is achieved via a result of independent interest: a local trace formula for the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-index.

Essentially Commuting with a Unitary

Let $R$ be a unitary operator whose spectrum is the circle. We show that the set of unitaries $U$ which essentially commute with $R$ (i.e., $[U,R]\equiv UR-RU$ is compact) is path-connected. Moreover, we also calculate the set of path-connected components of the orthogonal projections which essentially commute with $R$ and obey a non-triviality condition, and prove it is bijective with $\mathbb{Z}$.

Quantum tunneling and its absence in deep wells and strong magnetic fields

We present new results on quantum tunneling between deep potential wells, in the presence of a strong constant magnetic field. We construct a family of double well potentials containing examples for which the low-energy eigenvalue splitting vanishes, and hence quantum tunneling is eliminated. Further, by deforming within this family, the magnetic ground state can be made to transition from symmetric to anti-symmetric. However, for typical double wells in a certain regime, tunneling is not suppressed, and we provide a lower bound for the eigenvalue splitting.
