Rational Solids with Equal Surface Area and Volume

We classify pairs consisting of a right square pyramid and a right square prism, each having rational base side length and rational height, for which the two solids have equal surface area and equal volume. We prove that, up to scaling by a common positive rational factor, there is a unique such pair. The problem reduces to determining the rational points on a genus 2 bielliptic curve whose Jacobian has rank 2. We accomplish this using a quadratic Chabauty computation followed by the Mordell--Weil sieve. The same analysis gives an analogous classification for right circular cones and right circular cylinders.

On the Density of Coprime Reductions of Elliptic Curves

Given non-CM elliptic curves $E_1$ and $E_2$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, we study the natural density of primes $p$ of good reduction for which the orders of the groups $E_1(\mathbb{F}_p)$ and $E_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$ are coprime. This problem may be viewed as an elliptic curve analogue of the classical question concerning the density of coprime integer pairs. Motivated by Zywina's refinement of the Koblitz conjecture, we formulate a conjecture for the density of such primes. We prove that the series defining this constant converges and admits an almost Euler product expansion. In the case of Serre pairs, we give a closed formula for the constant and use it to prove a moments result describing the distribution of these constants as $(E_1, E_2)$ varies.

Rational points on modular curves via maps to elliptic curves with rank zero

A fundamental problem in arithmetic geometry is to determine the image of the mod $N$ Galois representation for all elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ and integers $N \geq 1$. For a given subgroup $G \le \mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})$, there is a modular curve $X_G$ whose rational points parametrize elliptic curves for which the image of the mod $N$ Galois representation is contained in $G$. If $X_G$ admits a map to an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ for which $E(\mathbb{Q})$ has rank $0$, then its rational points can be effectively determined, provided that a map $X_G \to E$ is known. In this article, we give a method for constructing such maps. Using this method, together with existing methods and results, we systematically determine the rational points of $X_G$ for more than $99\%$ of modular curves of level at most $70$.

The possible adelic indices for elliptic curves admitting a rational cyclic isogeny

In the 1970s, Serre proved that the adelic index of a non-CM elliptic curve over a number field is finite. More recently, Zywina conjectured the complete set of adelic indices for such curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. In this article, we prove that Zywina's conjecture is true for the family of non-CM elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ that admit a nontrivial rational cyclic isogeny. This strengthens a result of Lemos that resolved Serre's uniformity question for the same family of curves. Our proof proceeds by analyzing a collection of modular curves associated with each prime isogeny degree, using recent advances on $\ell$-adic images, isogeny-torsion graphs, and computations of models and rational points.

A uniform bound on the smallest surjective prime of an elliptic curve

Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve without complex multiplication. A well-known theorem of Serre asserts that the $\ell$-adic Galois representation $\rho_{E,\ell^\infty}$ is surjective for all but finitely many prime numbers $\ell$. Considerable work has gone into bounding the largest possible nonsurjective prime; a uniform bound of $37$ has been proposed but is yet unproven. We consider an opposing direction, proving that the smallest prime $\ell$ such that $\rho_{E,\ell^\infty}$ is surjective is at most $7$. Moreover, we completely classify all elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$ for which the smallest surjective prime is exactly $7$.

Opposing Average Congruence Class Biases in the Cyclicity and Koblitz Conjectures for Elliptic Curves

The cyclicity and Koblitz conjectures ask about the distribution of primes of cyclic and prime-order reduction, respectively, for elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. In 1976, Serre gave a conditional proof of the cyclicity conjecture, but the Koblitz conjecture (refined by Zywina in 2011) remains open. The conjectures are now known unconditionally "on average" due to work of Banks--Shparlinski and Balog--Cojocaru--David. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the cyclicity conjecture for primes in arithmetic progressions (AP), with relevant work by Akbal--G\"ulo\u{g}lu and Wong. In this paper, we adapt Zywina's method to formulate the Koblitz conjecture for primes in AP and refine a theorem of Jones to establish results on the moments of the constants in both the cyclicity and Koblitz conjectures for AP. In doing so, we uncover a somewhat counterintuitive phenomenon: On average, these two constants are oppositely biased over congruence classes. Finally, in an accompanying repository, we give Magma code for computing the constants discussed in this paper.

Computing nonsurjective primes associated to Galois representations of genus $2$ curves

For a genus $2$ curve $C$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ whose Jacobian $A$ admits only trivial geometric endomorphisms, Serre's open image theorem for abelian surfaces asserts that there are only finitely many primes $\ell$ for which the Galois action on $\ell$-torsion points of $A$ is not maximal. Building on work of Dieulefait, we give a practical algorithm to compute this finite set. The key inputs are Mitchell's classification of maximal subgroups of $\mathrm{PSp_4}(\mathbb{F}_\ell)$, sampling of the characteristic polynomials of Frobenius, and the Khare--Wintenberger modularity theorem. The algorithm has been submitted for integration into Sage, executed on all of the genus~$2$ curves with trivial endomorphism ring in the LMFDB, and the results incorporated into the homepage of each such curve.

An effective open image theorem for products of principally polarized abelian varieties

Let $A = \prod_{1\leq i\leq n} A_i$ be the product of principally polarized abelian varieties $A_1, \ldots, A_n$ of dimensions $g_1, \ldots, g_n$, respectively, each defined over a number field $K$, and pairwise nonisogenous over $\overline{K}$. We make effective an open image theorem for $A$ due to Hindry and Ratazzi. More specifically, we give an explicit bound of the constant $c(A)$ under GRH, in terms of standard invariants of $K$ and each $A_i$, where $c(A)$ is defined to be the smallest positive integer such that for any prime $\ell>c(A)$, the image of the $\ell$-adic Galois representation of $A$ is "as large as possible" in a suitable sense.

Serre curves relative to obstructions modulo 2

We consider elliptic curves $E / \mathbb{Q}$ for which the image of the adelic Galois representation $\rho_E$ is as large as possible given a constraint on the image modulo 2. For such curves, we give a characterization in terms of their $\ell$-adic images, compute all examples of conductor at most 500,000, precisely describe the image of $\rho_E$, and offer an application to the cyclicity problem. In this way, we generalize some foundational results on Serre curves.

On the effective version of Serre's open image theorem

Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve without complex multiplication. By Serre's open image theorem, the mod $\ell$ Galois representation $\overline{\rho}_{E, \ell}$ of $E$ is surjective for each prime number $\ell$ that is sufficiently large. Under the generalized Riemann hypothesis, we give an explicit upper bound on the largest prime $\ell$, linear in the logarithm of the conductor of $E$, such that $\overline{\rho}_{E, \ell}$ is nonsurjective.

Curious Squares

A curious number is a palindromic number whose base ten representation has the form $a \ldots a b \ldots b a \ldots a$. In this paper, we determine all curious numbers that are perfect squares. Our proof involves reducing the search for such numbers to several single variable families. From here, we complete the proof in two different ways. The first approach is elementary, though somewhat ad hoc. The second entails studying integral points on elliptic curves and is more systematic.

Rigidity in Elliptic Curve Local-Global Principles

We study the rigidity of the local conditions in two well-known local-global principles for elliptic curves over number fields. In particular, we consider a local-global principle for torsion due to Serre and Katz, and one for isogenies due to Sutherland. For each of these local-global principles, we prove that if an elliptic curve $E$ over a number field $K$ is such that it fails to satisfy the local condition for at least one prime ideal of $K$ of good reduction, then $E$ can satisfy the local condition at no more than 75% of prime ideals. We also give for (conjecturally) all elliptic curves over the rationals without complex multiplication, the densities of primes that satisfy the local conditions mentioned above.

A bound for the image conductor of a principally polarized abelian variety with open Galois image

Let $A$ be a principally polarized abelian variety of dimension $g$ over a number field $K$. Assume that the image of the adelic Galois representation of $A$ is an open subgroup of $\operatorname{GSp}_{2g}(\hat{\mathbb{Z}})$. Then there exists a positive integer $m$ so that the Galois image of $A$ is the full preimage of its reduction modulo $m$. The least $m$ with this property, denoted $m_A$, is called the image conductor (also called the level) of $A$. Jones recently established an upper bound for $m_A$, in terms of standard invariants of $A$, in the case that $A$ is an elliptic curve without complex multiplication. In this paper, we generalize the aforementioned result to provide an analogous bound in arbitrary dimension.
