Geometric realizations of Brauer classes on K3 surfaces from hyperkähler contractions

Elements of the Brauer group $\operatorname{Br}(S)$ of a variety $S$ have geometric incarnations as étale-projective $S$-bundles, yet producing minimalist constructions of such bundles, which often power arithmetic applications, remains a difficult problem. When $S$ is a K3 surface with Picard rank $1$, we use the birational geometry of moduli spaces of twisted sheaves on $S$ to construct geometric realizations of nontrivial elements of $\operatorname{Br}(S)$. We recover many known geometric constructions of Brauer classes on K3 surfaces while providing a common moduli-theoretic framework for them. As a by-product, we give a new proof of the period-index theorem for very general K3 surfaces.

Zeta functions of K3 categories over finite fields

We define the zeta function of a noncommutative K3 surface over a finite field, an invariant under Fourier-Mukai equivalence that can be used to define point counts in this noncommutative setting. These point counts can be negative, and can be used as an obstruction to geometricity. In particular, we study the K3 category associated to a cubic fourfold over a finite field, and show that point counts can also fail to detect nongeometricity. We also study an analogue of Honda-Tate for K3 surfaces and for K3 categories, and provide a nontrivial restriction on the possible Weil polynomials of the K3 category of a cubic fourfold.

On decompositions for Fano schemes of intersections of two quadrics

We propose conjectural semiorthogonal decompositions for Fano schemes of linear subspaces on intersections of two quadrics, in terms of symmetric powers of the associated hyperelliptic (resp. stacky) curve. When the intersection is odd-dimensional, we moreover conjecture an identity in the Grothendieck ring of varieties and other motivic contexts. The evidence for these conjectures is given by upgrading recent results of Chen-Vilonen-Xue, to obtain formulae for the Hodge numbers of these Fano schemes. This allows us to numerically verify the conjecture in the hyperelliptic case, and establish a combinatorial identity as evidence for the stacky case.

Kodaira dimension of moduli of special $K3^{[2]}$-fourfolds of degree 2

We study the Noether-Lefschetz locus of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}$ of $K3^{[2]}$-fourfolds with a polarization of degree $2$. Following Hassett's work on cubic fourfolds, Debarre, Iliev, and Manivel have shown that the Noether-Lefschetz locus in $\mathcal{M}$ is a countable union of special divisors $\mathcal{M}_d$, where the discriminant $d$ is a positive integer congruent to $0,2,$ or $4$ modulo 8. We compute the Kodaira dimensions of these special divisors for all but finitely many discriminants; in particular, we show that for $d>224$ and for many other small values of $d$, the space $\mathcal{M}_d$ is a variety of general type.

A census of cubic fourfolds over $\mathbb{F}_2$

We compute a complete set of isomorphism classes of cubic fourfolds over $\mathbb{F}_2$. Using this, we are able to compile statistics about various invariants of cubic fourfolds, including their counts of points, lines, and planes; all zeta functions of the smooth cubic fourfolds over $\mathbb{F}_2$; and their Newton polygons. One particular outcome is the number of smooth cubic fourfolds over $\mathbb{F}_2$, which we fit into the asymptotic framework of discriminant complements. Another motivation is the realization problem for zeta functions of $K3$ surfaces. We present a refinement to the standard method of orbit enumeration that leverages filtrations and gives a significant speedup. In the case of cubic fourfolds, the relevant filtration is determined by Waring representation and the method brings the problem into the computationally tractable range.
