Demonstration of H-mode Error Field Identification in a Single Discharge via Island Healing

Non-disruptive compass scan error field identification via island healing is demonstrated on KSTAR in a single H-mode discharge. This method can allow for up to a 75% reduction in the operational time necessary for a complete compass scan by reducing the required discharges from four to one. Previous experiments on DIII-D, JET, and MAST-U have demonstrated the technique in Ohmic and L-mode but required multiple discharges and strong real-time n=1 magnetics diagnostics close to the plasma that are unlikely to be viable for future devices. The results presented here were made possible by implementing a new set of triggering algorithms relevant to fusion pilot plant operation into the KSTAR plasma control system, along with KSTAR's strong RMPs and long pulse lengths. This represents a significant step towards the disruption-free error field identification method being demonstrated for deployment on future disruption-averse tokamaks, including ITER and fusion pilot plants. Steps needed to close remaining gaps to viability are addressed.

Control of pedestal-top electron density using RMP and gas puff at KSTAR

We report the experimental results of controlling the pedestal-top electron density by applying resonant magnetic perturbation with the in-vessel control coils and the main gas puff in the 2024-2025 KSTAR experimental campaign. The density is reconstructed using a parametrized psi_N grid and the five channels of the line-averaged density measured by a two-colored interferometer. The reconstruction procedure is accelerated by deploying a multi-layer perceptron to run in about 120 microseconds and is fast enough for real-time control. A proportional-integration controller is adopted, with the controller gains being estimated from the system identification processes. The experimental results show that the developed controller can follow a dynamic target while exclusively using both actuators. The absolute percentage errors between the electron density at psi_N=0.89 and the target are approximately 1.5% median and a 2.5% average value. The developed controller can even lower the density by using the pump-out mechanism under RMP, and it can follow a more dynamic target than a single actuator controller. The developed controller will enable experimental scenario exploration within a shot by dynamically setting the density target or maintaining a constant electron density within a discharge.

Mesoscopic transport in KSTAR plasmas: avalanches and the $E \times B$ staircase

The self-organization is one of the most interesting phenomena in the non-equilibrium complex system, generating ordered structures of different sizes and durations. In tokamak plasmas, various self-organized phenomena have been reported, and two of them, coexisting in the near-marginal (interaction dominant) regime, are avalanches and the $E \times B$ staircase. Avalanches mean the ballistic flux propagation event through successive interactions as it propagates, and the $E \times B$ staircase means a globally ordered pattern of self-organized zonal flow layers. Various models have been suggested to understand their characteristics and relation, but experimental researches have been mostly limited to the demonstration of their existence. Here we report detailed analyses of their dynamics and statistics and explain their relation. Avalanches influence the formation and the width distribution of the $E \times B$ staircase, while the $E \times B$ staircase confines avalanches within its mesoscopic width until dissipated or penetrated. Our perspective to consider them the self-organization phenomena enhances our fundamental understanding of them as well as links our findings with the self-organization of mesoscopic structures in various complex systems.
