Sonoluminescence and collapse dynamics of multielectron bubbles in helium

Multielectron bubbles (MEBs) differ from gas-filled bubbles in that it is the Coulomb repulsion of a nanometer thin layer of electrons that forces the bubble open rather than the pressure of an enclosed gas. We analyze the implosion of MEBs subjected to a pressure step, and find that despite the difference in the underlying processes the collapse dynamics is similar to that of gas-filled bubbles. When the MEB collapses, the electrons inside it undergo strong accelerations, leading to the emission of radiation. This type of sonoluminescence does not involve heating and ionisation of any gas inside the bubble. We investigate the conditions necessary to obtain sonoluminescence from multielectron bubbles and calculate the power spectrum of the emitted radiation.

Dynamical Exchange Effects in a Two-Dimensional Many-Polaron Gas

We calculate the influence of dynamical exchange effects on the response properties and the static properties of a two-dimensional many-polaron gas. These effects are not manifested in the random-phase approximation which is widely used in the analysis of the many-polaron system. Here they are taken into account by using a dielectric function derived in the time-dependent Hartree-Fock formalism. At weak electron-phonon coupling, we find that dynamical exchange effects lead to substantial corrections to the random-phase approximation results for the ground state energy, the effective mass, and the optical conductivity of the polaron system. Furthermore, we show that the reduction of the spectral weight of the optical absorption spectrum at frequencies above the longitudinal optical phonon frequency, due to many-body effects, is overestimated by the random-phase approximation.

Comment on "Observation of Bose-Einstein Condensation of Molecules", cond-mat/0311617

In this comment, we argue that the recent experiment of Ketterle and co-workers does not necessarily need to be interpreted as indicating that the true scattering amplitude between two molecules becomes small (8 nm measured vs. 120 nm predicted). Rather it can be interpreted as indicating that the energy of the achieved state is much lower than both the (variational) energy for a BCS state and the energy of a molecular condensate. In this sense, we suggest that the experiment may point to a novel many-body state, that is neither the BCS nor the molecular BEC state, and that still has to be identified.

Path integral formulation of the tunneling dynamics of a superfluid Fermi gas in an optical potential

To describe the tunneling dynamics of a stack of two-dimensional fermionic superfluids in an optical potential, we derive an effective action functional from a path integral treatment. This effective action leads, in the saddle point approximation, to equations of motion for the density and the phase of the superfluid Fermi gas in each layer. In the strong coupling limit (where bosonic molecules are formed) these equations reduce to a discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation, where the molecular tunneling amplitude is reduced for large binding energies. In the weak coupling (BCS) regime, we study the evolution of the stacked superfluids and derive an approximate analytical expression for the Josephson oscillation frequency in an external harmonic potential. Both in the weak and intermediate coupling regimes the detection of the Josephson oscillations described by our path integral treatment constitutes experimental evidence for the fermionic superfluid regime.

Coupled Ripplon-Plasmon Modes in a Multielectron Bubble

In multielectron bubbles, the electrons form an effectively two-dimensional layer at the inner surface of the bubble in helium. The modes of oscillation of the bubble surface (the ripplons) are influenced by the charge redistribution of the electrons along the surface. The dispersion relation for these charge redistribution modes (`longitudinal plasmons') is derived and the coupling of these modes to the ripplons is analysed. We find that the ripplon-plasmon coupling in a multielectron bubble differs markedly from that of electrons a flat helium surface. An equation is presented relating the spherical harmonic components of the charge redistribution to those of the shape deformation of the bubble.

Feshbach resonances in a quasi-2D atomic gas

Strongly confining an ultracold atomic gas in one direction to create a quasi-2D system alters the scattering properties of this gas. We investigate the effects of confinement on Feshbach scattering resonances and show that strong confinement results in a shift in the position of the Feshbach resonance as a function of the magnetic field. This shift, as well as the change of the width of the resonance, are computed. We find that the resonance is strongly damped in the thermal gas, but in the condensate the resonance remains sharp due to many-body effects. We introduce a 2D model system, suited for the study of resonant superfluidity, and having the same scattering properties as the tightly confined real system near a Feshbach resonance. Exact relations are derived between measurable quantities and the model parameters.

Wigner lattice of ripplopolarons in a multielectron bubble in helium

The properties of ripplonic polarons in a multielectron bubble in liquid helium are investigated on the basis of a path-integral variational method. We find that the two-dimensional electron gas can form deep dimples in the helium surface, or ripplopolarons, to solidify as a Wigner crystal. We derive the experimental conditions of temperature, pressure and number of electrons in the bubble for this phase to be realized. This predicted state is distinct from the usual Wigner lattice of electrons, in that it melts by the dissociation of the ripplopolarons, when the electrons shed their localizing dimple as the pressure on the multielectron bubble drops below a critical value.

Resonant dynamics in boson-fermion mixtures

The time evolution of a dilute atomic boson-fermion mixture is studied at zero temperature, when the external magnetic field is brought close to a interspecies Feshbach resonance. On short time scales we find that before a collapse or phase separation of the mixture can occur, oscillations between fermionic atoms and heteronuclear molecules dominate the dynamics. Applying the model presented here to a trapped mixture of $^{40}$K-$^{87}$Rb atoms, we find that the predicted oscillations can be revealed in degenerate mixtures of these atoms.

Three-Fluid Description of the Sympathetic Cooling of a Boson-Fermion Mixture

We present a model for sympathetic cooling of a mixture of fermionic and bosonic atomic gases in harmonic traps, based on a three-fluid description. The model confirms the experimentally observed cooling limit of about 0.2 T_F when only bosons are pumped. We propose sequential cooling -- first pumping of bosons and afterwards fermions -- as a way to obtain lower temperatures. For this scheme, our model predicts that temperatures less than 0.1 T_F can be reached.

Fission of multielectron bubbles in liquid helium

The stability of multielectron bubbles (MEBs) in liquid helium is investigated using the liquid-drop model for fissioning nuclei. Whereas a critical positive pressure can make the bubble unstable against fissioning, a small negative pressure suffices to introduce a restoring force preventing any small deformation of the bubble to grow. We also find that there exists an energy barrier making MEBs metastable against fissioning at zero pressure. The results obtained here overcome the difficulties associated with the Rayleigh-Plesset equation previously used to study bubble stability, and shed new light on the limits of achievable bubble geometries in recently proposed experiments devised to stabilize MEBs.

On the Spherical Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

We investigate the many-body properties of a two-dimensional electron gas constrained to the surface of a sphere, a system which is physically realized in multielectron bubbles in liquid helium. A second-quantization formalism, suited for the treatment of a spherical two-dimensional electron gas (S2DEG), is introduced. Within this formalism, the dielectric response properties of the S2DEG are derived, and we identify both collective excitations and a spectrum of single-particle excitations. We find that the single-particle excitations are constrained to a well-defined region in the angular momentum - energy plane. The collective excitations differ in two important aspects from those of a flat 2DEG: on a sphere, the 'spherical plasmons' have a discrete frequency spectrum and the lowest frequency is nonzero.

The effect of pressure on statics, dynamics and stability of multielectron bubbles

The effect of pressure and negative pressure on the modes of oscillation of a multi-electron bubble in liquid helium is calculated. Already at low pressures of the order of 10-100 mbar, these effects are found to significantly modify the frequencies of oscillation of the bubble. Stabilization of the bubble is shown to occur in the presence of a small negative pressure, which expands the bubble radius. Above a threshold negative pressure, the bubble is unstable.

Vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a multiply connected Laguerre-Gaussian optical trap

The quantized vortex state is investigated in a Bose-Einstein condensate, confined in a multiply connected geometry formed by a Laguerre-Gaussian optical trap. Solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation variationally, we show that the criterium for vortex stability is that the interatomic interaction strength must exceed a critical interaction strength. The time evolution of a freely expanding Laguerre-Gaussian condensate with a vortex is calculated, and used to derive the interference pattern of such a condensate overlapping with a parabolically trapped condensate.

Sum Rule for the Optical Absorption of an Interacting Many-Polaron Gas

A sum rule for the first frequency moment of the optical absorption of a many-polaron system is derived, taking into account many-body effects in the system of constituent charge carriers of the many-polaron system. In our expression for the sum rule, the electron-phonon coupling and the many-body effects in the electron (or hole) system formally decouple, so that the many-body effects can be treated to the desired level of approximation by the choice of the dynamical structure factor of the electron (hole) gas. We calculate correction factors to take into account both low and high experimental cutoff frequencies.

Optical Absorption of an Interacting Many-Polaron Gas

The optical absorption of a many (continuum) polaron gas is derived in the framework of a variational approach at zero temperature and weak or intermediate electron-phonon coupling strength. We derive a compact formula for the optical conductivity of the many-polaron system taking into account many-body effects in the electron or hole system. Within the method presented here, these effects are contained completely in the dynamical structure factor of the electron or hole system. This allows to build on well-established studies of the interacting electron gas. Based on this approach a novel feature in the absorption spectrum of the many-polaron gas, related to the emission of a plasmon together with a phonon, is identified. As an application and illustration of the technique, we compare the theoretical many-polaron optical absorption spectrum as derived in the present work with the `d-band' absorption feature in Nd$_{2}$CuO$_{2}$. Similarities are shown between the theoretically and the experimentally derived first frequency moment of the optical absorption of a family of differently doped Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-y}$ materials.

Condensation and interaction range in harmonic boson traps: a variational approach

For a gas of N bosons interacting through a two-body Morse potential a variational bound of the free energy of a confined system is obtained. The calculation method is based on the Feynman-Kac functional projected on the symmetric representation. Within the harmonic approximation a variational estimate of the effect of the interaction range on the existence of many-particle bound states, and on the N-T phase diagram is obtained.

Momentum distribution of confined bosons: temperature dependence

The momentum distribution function of a parabolically confined gas of bosons with harmonic interparticle interactions is derived. In the Bose-Einstein condensation region, this momentum distribution substantially deviates from a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. It is argued that the determination of the temperature of the boson gas from the Bose-Einstein momentum distribution function is more appropriate than the currently used fitting to the high momentum tail of the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution.
