A 3D DPG Maxwell Approach to Nonlinear Raman Gain in Fiber Laser Amplifiers

We propose a three dimensional Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin Maxwell approach for modeling Raman gain in fiber laser amplifiers. In contrast with popular beam propagation models, we are interested in a truly full vectorial approach. We apply the ultraweak DPG formulation, which is known to carry desirable properties for high-frequency wave propagation problems, to the coupled Maxwell signal/pump system and use a nonlinear iterative scheme to account for the Raman gain. This paper also introduces a novel and practical full-vectorial formulation of the electric polarization term for Raman gain that emphasizes the fact that the computer modeler is only given a measured bulk Raman gain coefficient. Our results provide promising qualitative corroboration of the model and methodology used.

Theoretical and experimental investigation on tandem Theoretical and experimental investigation on tandem modulator configurations for Frequency Coded Quantum Key Distribution systems

We have theoretically and experimentally address the possible tandem electro-optical modulator configurations that can be employed to implement Frequency Coded Quantum Key Distribution systems (FC-QKD). A closed and general formulation of the end to end field propagation in a dispersion compensated FC-QKD optical fiber system under the low modulation index regime is presented which accounts for all the possible tandem combinations. The properties and the parameter selection of the modulators to achieve each one are summarized. We also address which protocol (B92, BB84 or either) is feasible to be implemented with each configuration. The results confirm those reported for the configurations previously reported in the literature and, at the same time, show the existence of four novel tandem modulator configurations that can also be employed. We have also provided experimental evidence of the successful operation of the novel configurations that confirm the behavior predicted by the theoretical results.

Self-Adaptation in Evolving Systems

A theoretical and experimental analysis is made of the effects of self-adaptation in a simple evolving system. Specifically, we consider the effects of coding the mutation and crossover probabilities of a genetic algorithm evolving in certain model fitness landscapes. The resultant genotype-phenotype mapping is degenerate, there being no direct selective advantage for one probability versus another. We show that the action of mutation and crossover breaks this degeneracy leading to an induced symmetry breaking among the genotypic synonyms. We demonstrate that this induced symmetry breaking allows the system to self-adapt in a time dependent environment.

Symmetry Breaking and Adaptation: Evidence from a Toy Model of a Virus

We argue that the phenomenon of symmetry breaking in genetics can enhance the adaptability of a species to changes in the environment. In the case of a virus, the claim is that the codon bias in the neutralization epitope improves the virus' ability to generate mutants that evade the induced immune response. We support our claim with a simple ``toy model'' of a viral epitope evolving in competition with the immune system. The effective selective advantage of a higher mutability leads to a dominance of codons that favour non-synonymous mutations. The results in this paper suggest the possibility of emergence of an algorithmic language in more complicated systems.
