Superconducting energy gap in $\rm Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3$: Temperature dependence

The superconducting energy gap of $\rm Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3$ has been measured by tunneling. Despite the fact that the sample was macroscopically single phase with very sharp superconducting transition $T_c$ at 32~$K$, some of the measured tunnel junctions made by point contacts between silver tip and single crystal of $\rm Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3$ had lower transition at 20~$K$. Local variation of the potassium concentration as well as oxygen deficiency in $\rm Ba_{1-x}K_xBiO_3$ at the place where the point contact is made can account for the change of $T_c$. The conductance curves of the tunnel junctions reveal the BCS behavior with a small broadening of the superconducting-gap structure. A value of the energy gap scales with $T_c$. The reduced gap amounts to $2\Delta/kT_c = 4\div 4.3$ indicating a medium coupling strength. Temperature dependence of the energy gap follows the BCS prediction.

Puzzling evidence for surface superconductivity in the layered dichalcogenide Cu$_{10\%}$TiSe$_2$

We report on specific heat and magnetotransport measurements performed on superconducting Cu$_{10\%}$TiSe$_2$ single crystals. We show that superconductivity persists in transport measurements up to magnetic fields $H_R$ well above the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ deduced from the calorimetric measurements. Surprisingly this "surface" superconductivity is present for all magnetic field orientations, either parallel or perpendicular to the layers. For $H\|ab$, the temperature dependence of the $H_R/H_{c2}$ ratio can be well reproduced by solving the Ginzburg-Landau equations in presence of a surface layer with reduced superconducting properties. Unexpectedly this temperature dependence does not depend on the field orientation.

Single photon emitters in exfoliated WSe2 structures

Crystal structure imperfections in solids often act as efficient carrier trapping centers which, when suitably isolated, act as sources of single photon emission. The best known examples of such attractive imperfections are wellwidth or composition fluctuations in semiconductor heterostructures (resulting in a formation of quantum dots) and coloured centers in wide bandgap (e. g., diamond) materials. In the case of recently investigated thin films of layered compounds, the crystal imperfections may logically be expected to appear at the edges of commonly investigated few-layer flakes of these materials, exfoliated on alien substrates. Here, we report on comprehensive optical microspectroscopy studies of thin layers of tungsten diselenide, WSe2, a representative semiconducting dichalcogenide with a bandgap in the visible spectral range. At the edges of WSe2 flakes, transferred onto Si/SiO2 substrates, we discover centers which, at low temperatures, give rise to sharp emission lines (0.1 meV linewidth). These narrow emission lines reveal the effect of photon antibunching, the unambiguous attribute of single photon emitters. The optical response of these emitters is inherently linked to two-dimensional properties of the WSe2 monolayer, as they both give rise to luminescence in the same energy range, have nearly identical excitation spectra and very similar, characteristically large Zeeman effects. With advances in the structural control of edge imperfections, thin films of WSe2 may provide added functionalities, relevant for the domain of quantum optoelectronics.

Experimental consequences at high temperatures of quantum critical points

We study the Cr_(1-x) Re_x phase diagram finding that its phase transition temperature towards an antiferromagnetic order T_N follows a quantum [(x_c-x)/x_c ]^{\psi} law, with {\psi}=1/2, from the quantum critical point (QCP) at x_c=0.25 up to T_N=600K. We compare this system to others in order to understand why this elemental material is affected by the QCP up to such unusually high temperatures. We determine a general criterion for the crossover, as function of an external parameter such as concentration, from the region controlled solely by thermal fluctuations to that where quantum effects become observable. The properties of materials with low coherence lengths will thus be altered far away from the QCP.

Multiplicative noise and charge density wave dynamics in Rb0.30MoO3

We have investigated the combined effects of a multiplicative noise and nonlinear conductivity on the charge density wave (CDW) dynamics of the quasi-one dimensional conductor Rb0.30MoO3. When the amplitude of a bipolar rectangular voltage pulse excitation is modulated by a multiplicative Gaussian white noise perturbation, the average pulse amplitude is smaller than the unperturbed one and shows a non monotonous behaviour when the pulse amplitude is increased. We analyze the transient response in terms of an increase of phase coherence of the charge-density-wave.

Dependence of the structural and physical properties of Tl1-yFe2-z(Se1-xSx)2 with isovalent substitution of Se by S: decrease of TNeel with S content

The effect of selenium substitution by sulfur or tellurium in the Tl1-yFe2-zSe2 antiferromagnet was studied by x-ray and electron diffraction, magnetization and transport measurements. Tl0.8Fe1.5(Se1-xXx)2 (nominal composition) solid solutions were synthesized in the full x range (0<x<1) for X=S and up to x=0.5 for X=Te, using the sealed tube technique. No superconductivity was found down to 4.2K in the case of sulfur despite the fact that the optimal crystallographic parameters, determined by Rietveld refinements, are reached in the series (i.e. the Fe-(Se,S) interplane height and (Se,S)-Fe-(Se,S) angle for which the critical superconducting transition T$_{c}$ is usually maximal in pnictides). Quasi full Tl site (y=0.05) compared to significant alkaline deficiency (y=0.2-0.3) in analogous A1-yFe2-zSe2 (A = K, Rb, Cs), and the resulting differences in iron valency, density of states and doping, are suggested to explain this absence of superconductivity. Compounds substituted with tellurium, at least up to x=0.25, show superconducting transitions but probably due to tetragonal Fe(Se,Te) impurity phase. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the existence of ordered iron vacancies network in the samples from the Tl$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.5}$(Se$_{1-x}$S$_{x}$)$_{2}$ series in the form of the tetragonal $\sqrt{5}$ a $\times \sqrt{5}$ a $\times$ c superstructure (\textit{I4/m}) (mixed with the orthorhombic $\sqrt{2}$ a $\times 2\sqrt{2}$ a $\times$ c form (\textit{Ibam}) if the iron vacancies level is increased). The Néel temperature (T$_{N}$) indicating the onset of antiferromagnetism order in the $\sqrt{5}$ a $\times \sqrt{5}$ a $\times$ c supercell decreases from 450K in the selenide (x=0) to 330K in the sulfide (x=1). We finally demonstrate a direct linear relationship between $T_{N\acute{e}el}$ and the Fe-(Se,S) bond length (or Fe-(Se,S) height).

Broad band noise and stochastic resonance in the CDW conductors K0.30MoO3 and K0.30Mo(1-x)WxO3 (x=0.001 and x=0.002)

We have investigated nonlinear characteristics and broad band noise in the quasi-one dimensional charge-density-wave conductors K0.30MoO3 and K0.30Mo(1-x)WxO3 (x=0.001 and x=0.002) When the amplitude of a bipolar rectangular voltage pulse excitation is modulated by adding a white noise perturbation, the average pulse amplitude is smaller than the unperturbed one and shows a non monotonous behaviour when the pulse amplitude is increased. Our findings suggest that coupling between internal broad band noise and external white noise may lead to an increase of phase coherence of the charge-density-wave.

Effect of the isoelectronic substitution of Sb for As on the magnetic and structural properties of LaFe(As1-xSbx)O

The antiferromagnetic order and structural distortion in the LaFe(As1-xSbx)O system have been investigated by powder neutron diffraction and physical properties measurements. Polycrystalline samples of LaFe(As1-xSbx)O (x<0.5) were prepared using solid state synthesis at ambient and high pressure. We find that the isoelectronic substitution of Sb for As decreases the structural and magnetic transition temperatures but, contrary to the effects of phosphorus substitution, superconductivity is not induced. Instead a slight increase in the Fe magnetic moment is observed.

Disorder effects in pnictides : a tunneling spectroscopy study

We present the synthesis and the tunneling spectroscopy study of superconducting FeSe0.5Te0.5 (Tc = 14 K), SmFeAsO0.85 (Tc = 45 K) and SmFeAsO0.9F0.1 (Tc = 52 K). The samples were characterized by Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction patterns and transport measurements. Tunneling experiments on FeSe0.5Te0.5 revealed a single superconducting gap of ~1 meV in BCS-like tunnelling conductance spectra. In SmFeAsO0.85 and SmFeAsO0.9F0.1 however, more complex spectra were observed characterized by two gap-like structures at ~4 meV and ~10 meV. These spectra are qualitatively understood assuming a two-band superconductor with a 's\pm' order parameter. We show that depending on the sign relation between the pairing amplitudes in the two bands, the interband quasiparticle scattering has a crucial effect on the shape of the tunneling spectra. Detailed analysis of the tunneling spectroscopy data supports the 's\pm' model, but single-gap spectra found in FeSe0.5Te0.5 are more compatible with a disorder-induced 's'-wave gap, due to the Se-Te substitution.

Dramatic effective mass reduction driven by strong electronic correlations

We present angle-resolved photoemission experiments on 1T-TiSe2 at temperatures ranging from 13K to 288K. The data evidence a dramatic renormalization of the conduction band below 100K, whose origin can be explained with the exciton condensate phase model. The renormalization translates into a substantial effective mass reduction of the dominant charge carriers and can be directly related to the low temperature downturn of the resistivity of 1T-TiSe2. This observation is in opposition to the common belief that strong interactions produce heavier quasiparticles through an increased effective mass.

Temperature dependent photoemission on 1T-TiSe2: Interpretation within the exciton condensate phase model

The charge density wave phase transition of 1T-TiSe2 is studied by angle-resolved photoemission over a wide temperature range. An important chemical potential shift which strongly evolves with temperature is evidenced. In the framework of the exciton condensate phase, the detailed temperature dependence of the associated order parameter is extracted. Having a mean-field-like behaviour at low temperature, it exhibits a non-zero value above the transition, interpreted as the signature of strong excitonic fluctuations, reminiscent of the pseudo-gap phase of high temperature superconductors. Integrated intensity around the Fermi level is found to display a trend similar to the measured resistivity and is discussed within the model.

Observation of correlations up to the micrometer scale in sliding charge-density waves

High-resolution coherent x-ray diffraction experiment has been performed on the charge density wave (CDW) system K$_{0.3}$MoO$_3$. The $2k_F$ satellite reflection associated with the CDW has been measured with respect to external dc currents. In the sliding regime, the $2k_F$ satellite reflection displays secondary satellites along the chain axis which corresponds to correlations up to the micrometer scale. This super long range order is 1500 times larger than the CDW period itself. This new type of electronic correlation seems inherent to the collective dynamics of electrons in charge density wave systems. Several scenarios are discussed.

Point-contact spectroscopy of Al- and C-doped MgB2. Superconducting energy gaps and scattering studies

The two-band/two-gap superconductivity in aluminium and carbon doped MgB$_2$ has been addressed by the point-contact spectroscopy. Two gaps are preserved in all samples with $T_c's$ down to 22 K. The evolution of two gaps as a function of the critical temperature in the doped systems suggest the dominance of the band-filling effects but for the increased Al-doping the enhanced interband scattering approaching two gaps must be considered. The magnetic field dependences of the Andreev reflection excess currents as well as zero-energy density of states determined from the experimental data are used to analyze the intraband scattering. It is shown, that while the C-doping increases the intraband scattering in the $\pi$-band more rapidly then in the $\sigma$ band, the Al-doping does not change their relative weight.

Influence of Al doping on the critical fields and gap values in magnesium diboride single crystals

The lower ($H_{c1}$) and upper ($H_{c2}$) critical fields of Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_{x}$B$_2$ single crystals (for $x = 0$, 0.1 and $\gtrsim 0.2$) have been deduced from specific heat and local magnetization measurements, respectively. We show that $H_{c1}$ and $H_{c2}$ are both decreasing with increasing doping content. The corresponding anisotropy parameter $Γ_{H_{c2}}(0) = H^{ab}_{c2}(0)/H^c_{c2}(0)$ value also decreases from $\sim 5$ in pure MgB$_2$ samples down to $\sim 1.5$ for $x \gtrsim 0.2$ whereas $Γ_{H_{c1}}(0)=H^c_{c1}(0)/H^{ab}_{c1}(0)$ remains on the order of 1 in all samples. The small and large gap values have been obtained by fitting the temperature dependence of the zero field electronic contribution to the specific heat to the two gap model for the three Al concentrations. Very similar values have also been obtained by point contact spectroscopy measurements. The evolution of those gaps with Al concentration suggests that both band filling and interband scattering effects are present.

Competition of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in Sc3InB

We present results of electronic structure calculations for intermetallic perovskite Sc3InB with Full--Potential KKR-LDA method. Sc3InB is very promising candidate for a new superconductor (related to 8K MgCNi3) and can be regarded as a boron-inserted cubic Sc3In, which is a high--pressure allotropic form of the hexagonal weak ferromagnet Sc3In. We predict that cubic Sc3In can be also magnetic, whereas Sc3InB having large DOS in the vicinity of EF exhibits non-magnetic ground state. Estimation of the electron--phonon coupling for Sc3InB gives $λ\simeq 1$. Furthermore, the effect of vacancy in Sc3InB{1-x} and antisite disorder in Sc3(In-B) on critical parameters is also discussed in view of KKR--CPA method. All theoretical results support possibility of the superconductivity onset in Sc3InB. Preliminary experimental measurements established the transition temperature close to 4.5 K, with a very abrupt change in susceptibility and a correlated drop of the resistivity when cooling down.

Anisotropies of the lower and upper critical fields in MgB$_2$ single crystals

The temperature dependence of the London penetration depth ($λ$) and coherence length ($ξ$) has been deduced from Hall probe magnetization measurements in high quality MgB$_2$ single crystals in the two main crystallographic directions. We show that, in contrast to conventional superconductors, MgB$_2$ is characterized by two different anisotropy parameters ($Γ_λ= λ_c/λ_{ab}$ and $Γ_ξ= ξ_{ab}/ξ_c$) which strongly differ at low temperature and merge at $T_c $. These results are in very good agreement with recent calculations in weakly coupled two bands suprerconductors (Phys. Rev. B, 66, 020509(R) (2002).

Anisotropy of the Upper Critical Field and Critical Current in Single Crystal MgB$_2$

We report on specific heat, high magnetic field transport and $ac-$susceptibility measurements on magnesium diboride single crystals. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ for magnetic fields perpendicular and parallel to the Mg and B planes is presented for the first time in the entire temperature range. A very different temperature dependence has been observed in the two directions which yields to a temperature dependent anisotropy with $Γ\sim$ 5 at low temperatures and about 2 near $T_c$. A peak effect is observed in susceptibility measurements for $H \sim $2 T parallel to the $c-$axis and the critical current density presnts a sharp maximum for $H$ parallel to the ab-plane.

Superconducting Transition and Phase Diagram of Single Crystal MgB2

The superconducting phase diagram of MgB2 was determined from magnetization, magneto-transport and the first single-crystal specific heat measurements. A zero-temperature in-plane coherence length of 8 nm is determined. The superconducting anisotropy increases from a value around 2 near Tc to above 4.5 at 22 K. For H||c a pronounced peak effect in the critical current occurs at the upper critical field. Evidence for a surface superconducting state is presented for H||c which might account for the wide spread in reported values of the anisotropy.
