Spectroscopy of the Hyperfine Structure of HD$^+$ in Rotationally Excited States with 10-ppb Uncertainty

We report the first measurement of the total hyperfine interval in the manifold of the ($v=0,L=3$) rovibrational state of HD$^+$ using microwave spectroscopy of HD$^+$ ions in a linear Paul trap. To overcome the low (0.2%) occupancy of the quantum states involved, we employ a novel technique that combines intermittent Majorana depolarization of the HD$^+$ ensemble with redistribution of rotational-state population by blackbody radiation to effectively amplify the occupancy by a factor of 25. This enables the observation of a single field-insensitive magnetic subcomponent of the hyperfine transition, leading to a measured total hyperfine interval of ${1\,050\,804.511}\pm 0.011\,$kHz with an unprecedented relative uncertainty of 10 parts per billion. This differs from the theoretically predicted value ${1\,050\,802.78}\pm 0.89\,$kHz by 1.9$\sigma$. We show that our experimental value is consistent with the recently measured hyperfine structure of the ($v=0,L=0$) rovibrational state of HD$^+$ [C.M. K\"onig et al., High-precision Penning trap spectroscopy of the ground state spin structure of HD$^+$, Phys. Rev. Lett. $\mathbf{136}$,143002 (2026)], for which a similar deviation from theory was found. Our work may help resolve puzzling discrepancies between the theoretical and experimental hyperfine structure observed previously in optical rovibrational spectra of HD$^+$.

Scanning probe imaging of coexistent ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity at room temperature

Room temperature coexistence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity in a thin film of a novel material of nominal composition PbTi0.5Fe0.5O3-d is probed by standard ferroelectric and ferromagnetic hysteresis loop measurements and by scanning probe microscopy of various kinds. Both magnetic domains and ferroelectric domains are observed in the same spatial region of the material, implying phase coexistence in this system. For both order parameters, sample morphology strongly affects roughness of the domain walls.

200 MeV Ag+15 ion irradiation created columnar defects and enhanced critical current density of La-2125 type superconducting thin films

We have deposited c-axis oriented thin films of La1.5Dy0.5CaBa2Cu5Oz (La-2125) tetragonal superconductor on LaAlO3 (001) by Pulsed Laser Deposition. These films were irradiated with 200 MeV Ag+15 ions. Atomic Force Microscopy and Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis indicate that the irradiation has created columnar defects along the entire thickness (2000 A) of these films. With ion irradiation up to 1*10^11 ions/cm2, the critical current density (Jc(H)) is found to enhance by almost five folds, which is attributed to the augmented flux pinning by the columnar defects. A further increase in irradiation to 1*10^12 ions/cm2 causes reduction in Jc(H) due to distorted morphology of the film. Our work shows that the enhancement in Jc (H) of the irradiated La-2125 film is comparable to that in irradiated RE-123. Also, as the La-2125 type films have greater chemical stability than RE-123 (RE = rare earth ion), La-2125 type superconductors are potential candidates for applications. Interesting to note that there are partial flux jumps observed to occur symmetrically in the magnetic hysteresis of irradiated La-2125 thin films with enhanced Jc(H).

Transport and Magnetic properties of laser ablated La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 films on LaAlO3: Effect of oxygen pressure, sample thickness and co-doping with Ca

La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 is a relatively new addition in the family of colossal magnetoresistive manganites where the cerium ion is believed to be in the Ce4+ state. In this paper we report an extensive study the magnetotransport properties of laser ablated La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 films on LaAlO3 with variation in ambient oxygen pressure during growth and film thickness. We observe that the transport and magnetic properties of the film depend on the interplay between oxygen pressure, surface morphology, film thickness and epitaxial strain. The films were characterized by x-ray diffraction on a 4-circle x-ray goniometer. We observe an increase in the metal-insulator transition temperature with decreasing oxygen pressure. This is in direct contrast with the oxygen pressure dependence of La0.7Ca-0.3MnO-3 films suggesting the electron doped nature of the La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 system. With decreasing film thickness we observe an increase in the metal-insulator transition temperature. This is associated with a compression of the unit cell in the a-b plane due to epitaxial strain. When the system is co-doped with 50% Ca at the Ce site the system (La0.7Ca0.15Ce0.15MnO3) is driven into a insulating state suggesting that the electrons generated by Ce4+ is compensated by the holes generated by Ca2+ valence thus making the average valence at the rare-earth site 3+ as in the parent material LaMnO3.
