Angular momentum projection of cranked Hartree-Fock states: Application to terminating bands in A~44 nuclei

We present the first systematic calculations based on the angular-momentum projection of cranked Slater determinants. We propose the Iy --> I scheme, by which one projects the angular momentum I from the 1D cranked state constrained to the average spin projection of =I. Calculations performed for the rotational band in 46Ti show that the AMP Iy --> I scheme offers a natural mechanism for correcting the cranking moment of inertia at low-spins and shifting the terminating state up by ~2 MeV, in accordance with data. We also apply this scheme to high-spin states near the band termination in A~44 nuclei, and compare results thereof with experimental data, shell-model calculations, and results of the approximate analytical symmetry-restoration method proposed previously.

Shell Structure of Exotic Nuclei

Theoretical predictions and experimental discoveries for neutron-rich, short-lived nuclei far from stability indicate that the familiar concept of nucleonic shell structure should be considered as less robust than previously thought. The notion of single-particle motion in exotic nuclei is reviewed with a particular focus on three aspects: (i) variations of nuclear mean field with neutron excess due to tensor interactions; (ii) importance of many-body correlations; and (iii) influence of open channels on properties of weakly bound and unbound nuclear states.

Bimodal fission in the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach

Spontaneous-fission properties of 256Fm, 258Fm, and 260Fm isotopes are studied within the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock+BCS framework. In the particle-hole channel we take the Skyrme SkM* effective force, while in the particle-particle channel we employ the seniority pairing interaction. Three static fission paths for all investigated heavy fermium isotopes are found. The analysis of these fission modes allows to describe observed asymmetric fission of 256Fm, as well as bimodal fission of 258Fm and symmetric fission in 260Fm.

Pairing properties of superheavy nuclei

Pairing properties of even-even superheavy N=184 isotones are studied within the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock+BCS approach. In the particle-hole channel we take the Skyrme energy density functional SLy4, while in the particle-particle channel we employ the seniority pairing force and zero-range delta-interactions with different forms of density dependence. We conclude that the calculated static fission trajectories weakly depend on the specific form of the delta-pairing interaction. We also investigate the impact of triaxiality on the inner fission barrier and find a rather strong Z dependence of the effect.

Collective inertia and fission barriers within the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock theory

Spontaneous fission barriers, quadrupole inertia, and zero-point quadrupole-energy corrections are calculated for 252,256,258Fm in the framework of the self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock+BCS theory. Two ways of computing dynamical inertia are employed: the Gaussian Overlap Approximation to the Generator Coordinate Method and cranking ansatz. The Skyrme results are compared with those of the Gogny-Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov model.

Angular-momentum projection of cranked symmetry-unrestricted Slater determinants

We report on development of a new feature of the code HFODD, allowing for the angular-momentum projection of cranked symmetry-unrestricted Slater determinants. After a brief overview of the main theoretical building blocks and formalism, we present several preliminary applications. In particular, we discuss the case of a well-deformed rotational band in 156Gd, and we show the emergence of uncompensated poles in the overlap kernels calculated in an odd-A nucleus 155Eu.

Nuclei with Tetrahedral Symmetry

We discuss a point-group-theory based method of searching for new regions of nuclear stability. We illustrate the related strategy with realistic calculations employing the tetrahedral and the octahedral point groups. In particular, several nuclei in the Rare Earth region appear as excellent candidates to study the new mechanism.

Variation after Particle-Number Projection for the HFB Method with the Skyrme Energy Density Functional

Variation after particle-number restoration is incorporated for the first time into the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov framework employing the Skyrme energy density functional with zero-range pairing. The resulting projected HFB equations can be expressed in terms of the local gauge-angle-dependent densities. Results of projected calculations are compared with those obtained within the Lipkin-Nogami method in the standard version and with the Lipkin-Nogami method followed by exact particle-number projection.

Tensor interactions in mean-field approaches

Basic properties of the nuclear tensor mean fields are reviewed, and their role in changing the shell structure and masses of nuclei is analyzed within the spherical Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov approach.

Pairing renormalization and regularization within the local density approximation

We discuss methods used in mean-field theories to treat pairing correlations within the local density approximation. Pairing renormalization and regularization procedures are compared in spherical and deformed nuclei. Both prescriptions give fairly similar results, although the theoretical motivation, simplicity, and stability of the regularization procedure makes it a method of choice for future applications.

Large-Scale Self-Consistent Nuclear Mass Calculations

The program of systematic large-scale self-consistent nuclear mass calculations that is based on the nuclear density functional theory represents a rich scientific agenda that is closely aligned with the main research directions in modern nuclear structure and astrophysics, especially the radioactive nuclear beam physics. The quest for the microscopic understanding of the phenomenon of nuclear binding represents, in fact, a number of fundamental and crucial questions of the quantum many-body problem, including the proper treatment of correlations and dynamics in the presence of symmetry breaking. Recent advances and open problems in the field of nuclear mass calculations are presented and discussed.

Collective Rotation of Tetrahedral Nuclei in the Cranking Model

The three-dimensional cranking model is used to investigate the microscopic aspects of the rotation of nuclei with the tetrahedral symmetry. Two classes of rotation axes are studied corresponding to two different discrete symmetries of the rotating hamiltonian. Self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations show that the tetrahedral minimum remains remarkably stable until the first single-particle crossing.

Search for the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock Solutions for Chiral Rotation in N=75 Isotones

A search for the self-consistent solutions for the chiral rotational bands in the N=75 isotones, 130Cs, 132La, 134Pr and 136Pm is performed within the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock cranking approach using SKM* and SLy4 parametrizations. The dependence of the solutions on the time-odd contributions in the energy functional is studied. From among the considered four isotones, self-consistent chiral solutions are obtained only in 132La. The microscopic calculations are compared with the 132La experimental data and with results of a classical model that contains all the mechanisms underlying the chirality of the collective rotational motion. Strong similarities between the HF and classical model results are found. The suggestion formulated earlier by the authors that the chiral rotation cannot exist below a certain critical frequency is further illustrated and discussed, together with the microscopic origin of a transition from the planar to chiral rotation in nuclei. We also formulate the separability rule by which the Tilted-Axis-Cranking solutions can be inferred from three independent Principal-Axis-Cranking solutions corresponding to three different axes of rotation.

Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov calculations for nuclei with tetrahedral deformation

Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov solutions corresponding to the tetrahedral deformation are found in six tetrahedrally doubly-magic nuclei. Values of the beta32 deformation, depths of the tetrahedral minima, and their energies relative to the co-existing quadrupole minima are determined for several versions of the Skyrme force. Reduction of the tetrahedral deformation energies by pairing correlations is quantitatively analysed. In light nuclei, shallow tetrahedral minima are found to be the lowest in energy, while in heavy nuclei, the minima are deeper but appear at a few MeV of excitation.

Nuclear time-reversal violation and the Schiff moment of 225Ra

We present a comprehensive mean-field calculation of the Schiff moment of the nucleus 225Ra, the quantity which determines the static electric dipole moment of the corresponding atom if time-reversal (T) invariance is violated in the nucleus. The calculation breaks all possible intrinsic symmetries of the nuclear mean field and includes, in particular, both exchange and direct terms from the full finite-range T-violating nucleon-nucleon interaction, and the effects of short-range correlations. The resulting Schiff moment, which depends on three unknown T-violating pion-nucleon coupling constants, is much larger than in 199Hg, the isotope with the best current experimental limit on its atomic electric-dipole moment.

Coordinate-space solution of the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov equations within spherical symmetry. The program HFBRAD (v1.0)

We describe the first version (v1.00) of the code HFBRAD which solves the Skyrme-Hartree-Fock or Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov equations in the coordinate representation within the spherical symmetry. A realistic representation of the quasiparticle wave functions on the space lattice allows for performing calculations up to the particle drip lines. Zero-range density-dependent interactions are used in the pairing channel. The pairing energy is calculated by either using a cut-off energy in the quasiparticle spectrum or the regularization scheme proposed by A. Bulgac and Y. Yu.

Self-Consistent Description of Multipole Strength in Exotic Nuclei I: Method

We use the canonical Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov basis to implement a completely self-consistent quasiparticle-random-phase approximation with arbitrary Skyrme energy density functionals and density-dependent pairing functionals. The point of the approach is to accurately describe multipole strength functions in spherical even-even nuclei, including weakly-bound drip-line systems. We describe the method and carefully test its accuracy, particularly in handling spurious modes. To illustrate our approach, we calculate isoscalar and isovector monopole, dipole, and quadrupole strength functions in several Sn isotopes, both in the stable region and at the drip lines.
