Lower bound for the rate of blow-up of singular solutions of the Zakharov system in $\R^3$

We consider the scalar Zakharov system in $\R^3$ for initial conditions $(\psi(0), n(0), n_t(0)) \in H^{\ell+1/2} \times H^\ell \times H^{\ell-1} $, $0\leq\ell \leq 1$. Assuming that the solution blows up in a finite time $t^* < \infty$, we establish a lower bound for the rate of blow-up of the corresponding Sobolev norms in the form $$ \|\psi(t)\|_{H^{\ell+1/2}} +\|n(t)\|_{H^{\ell}} + \|n_t(t)\|_{H^{\ell-1}} > C(t^*-t)^{-\theta_\ell} $$ with $\theta_\ell = \frac{1}{4}(1+ 2 \ell)^-$. The analysis is a reappraisal of the local wellposedness theory of Ginibre, Tsutsumi and Velo (1997) combined with an argument developed by Cazenave and Weissler (1990) in the context of nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations.

Global well-posedness in Sobolev space implies global existence for weighted L^2 initial data for L^2 -critical NLS

The L^2 -critical defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger initial value problem on R^d is known to be locally well-posed for initial data in L^2. Hamiltonian conservation and the pseudoconformal transformation show that global well-posedness holds for initial data u_0 in Sobolev H^1 and for data in the weighted space (1+|x|) u_0 in L^2. For the d=2 problem, it is known that global existence holds for data in H^s and also for data in the weighted space (1+|x|)^σ u_0 in L^2 for certain s, σ< 1. We prove: If global well-posedness holds in H^s then global existence and scattering holds for initial data in the weighted space with σ= s.

Numerical simulations of the energy- supercritical Nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We present numerical simulations of the defocusing nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation with an energy supercritical nonlinearity. These computations were motivated by recent works of Kenig-Merle and Kilip-Visan who considered some energy supercritical wave equations and proved that if the solution is {a priori} bounded in the critical Sobolev space (i.e. the space whose homogeneous norm is invariant under the scaling leaving the equation invariant), then it exists for all time and scatters. In this paper, we numerically investigate the boundedness of the $H^2$-critical Sobolev norm for solutions of the NLS equation in dimension five with quintic nonlinearity. We find that for a class of initial conditions, this norm remains bounded, the solution exists for long time, and scatters.

Remarks on global a priori estimates for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We present a unified approach for obtaining global a priori estimates for solutions of nonlinear defocusing Schrödinger equations with defocusing nonlinearities. The estimates are produced by contracting the local momentum conservation law with appropriate vector fields. The corresponding law is written for defocusing equations of tensored solutions. In particular, we obtain a new estimate in two dimensions. We bound the restricted $L_t^4L_γ^4$ Strichartz norm of the solution on any curve $γ$ in $\mathbb R^2$. For the specific case of a straight line we upgrade this estimate to a weighted Strichartz estimate valid in the full plane.

Weakly turbulent solutions for the cubic defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider the cubic defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the two dimensional torus. We exhibit smooth solutions for which the support of the conserved energy moves to higher Fourier modes. This weakly turbulent behavior is quantified by the growth of higher Sobolev norms: given any delta << 1, K >>1, s >1, we construct smooth initial data u_0 with ||u_0||_{{H}^s} < delta, so that the corresponding time evolution u satisfies ||u(T)||_{{H}^s} > K at some time T. This growth occurs despite the Hamiltonian's bound on ||u(t)||_{\dot{H}^1} and despite the conservation of the quantity ||u(t)||_{L^2}. The proof contains two arguments which may be of interest beyond the particular result described above. The first is a construction of the solution's frequency support that simplifies the system of ODE's describing each Fourier mode's evolution. The second is a construction of solutions to these simpler systems of ODE's which begin near one invariant manifold and ricochet from arbitrarily small neighborhoods of an arbitrarily large number of other invariant manifolds. The techniques used here are related to but are distinct from those traditionally used to prove Arnold Diffusion in perturbations of Hamiltonian systems.

Weighted Low-Regularity Solutions of the KP-I Initial Value Problem

In this paper we establish local well-posedness of the KP-I problem, with initial data small in the intersection of the natural energy space with the space of functions which are square integrable when multiplied by the weight y. The result is proved by the contraction mapping principle. A similar (but slightly weaker) result was the main Theorem in the paper " Low regularity solutions for the Kadomstev-Petviashvili I equation " by Colliander, Kenig and Staffilani (GAFA 13 (2003),737-794 and math.AP/0204244). Ionescu found a counterexample (included in the present paper) to the main estimate used in the GAFA paper, which renders incorrect the proof there. The present paper thus provides a correct proof of a strengthened version of the main result in the GAFA paper.

Resonant decompositions and the I-method for cubic nonlinear Schrodinger on R^2

The initial value problem for the cubic defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i \partial_t u + Δu = |u|^2 u$ on the plane is shown to be globally well-posed for initial data in $H^s (\R^2)$ provided $s>1/2$. The proof relies upon an almost conserved quantity constructed using multilinear correction terms. The main new difficulty is to control the contribution of resonant interactions to these correction terms. The resonant interactions are significant due to the multidimensional setting of the problem and some orthogonality issues which arise.

Improved interaction Morawetz inequalities for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\R^2$

We prove global well-posedness for low regularity data for the $L^2-critical$ defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in 2d. More precisely we show that a global solution exists for initial data in the Sobolev space $H^{s}(\mathbb R^2)$ and any $s>{2/5}$. This improves the previous result of Fang and Grillakis where global well-posedness was established for any $s \geq {1/2}$. We use the $I$-method to take advantage of the conservation laws of the equation. The new ingredient is an interaction Morawetz estimate similar to one that has been used to obtain global well-posedness and scattering for the cubic NLS in 3d. The derivation of the estimate in our case is technical since the smoothed out version of the solution $Iu$ introduces error terms in the interaction Morawetz inequality. A byproduct of the method is that the $H^{s}$ norm of the solution obeys polynomial-in-time bounds.

Polynomial upper bounds for the instability of the Nonlinear Schrödinger equation below the energy norm

We continue the study (initiated in \cite{ckstt:7}) of the orbital stability of the ground state cylinder for focussing non-linear Schrödinger equations in the $H^s(\R^n)$ norm for $1-\eps < s < 1$, for small $\eps$. In the $L^2$-subcritical case we obtain a polynomial bound for the time required to move away from the ground state cylinder. If one is only in the $H^1$-subcritical case then we cannot show this, but for defocussing equations we obtain global well-posedness and polynomial growth of $H^s$ norms for $s$ sufficiently close to 1.

Symplectic nonsqueezing of the KdV flow

We prove two finite dimensional approximation results and a symplectic non-squeezing property for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) flow on the circle T. The nonsqueezing result relies on the aforementioned approximations and the finite-dimensional nonsqueezing theorem of Gromov. Unlike the work of Kuksin which initiated the investigation of non-squeezing results for infinite dimensional Hamiltonian systems, the nonsqueezing argument here does not construct a capacity directly. In this way our results are similar to those obtained for the NLS flow by Bourgain. A major difficulty here though is the lack of any sort of smoothing estimate which would allow us to easily approximate the infinite dimensional KdV flow by a finite-dimensional Hamiltonian flow. To resolve this problem we invert the Miura transform and work on the level of the modified KdV (mKdV) equation, for which smoothing estimates can be established.

Global existence and scattering for rough solutions of a nonlinear Schroedinger equation on R^3

We prove global existence and scattering for the defocusing, cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $H^s(\rr^3)$ for $s > {4/5}$. The main new estimate in the argument is a Morawetz-type inequality for the solution $ϕ$. This estimate bounds $\|ϕ(x,t)\|_{L^4_{x,t}(\rr^3 \times \rr)}$, whereas the well-known Morawetz-type estimate of Lin-Strauss controls $\int_0^{\infty}\int_{\rr^3}\frac{(ϕ(x,t))^4}{|x|} dx dt

Regularity Bounds on Zakharov System Evolutions

Spatial regularity properties of certain global-in-time solutions of the Zakharov system are established. In particular, the evolving solution $u(t)$ is shown to satisfy an estimate $\Hsup s {u(t)} \leq C {{|t|}^{(s-1)+}}$, where $H^s$ is the standard spatial Sobolev norm. The proof is an adaptation of earlier work on the nonlinear Schrödinger equation which reduces matters to bilinear estimates.
