Line of magnetic monopoles and an extension of the Aharonov-Bohm effect

In the Landau problem on the two-dimensional plane, magnetic translation of a quantum wave can be induced by an in-plane electric field. The geometric phase accompanying such magnetic translation around a closed path differs from the topological phase of Aharonov and Bohm in two essential aspects: The wave is in direct contact with the magnetic flux and the geometric phase has an opposite sign from the Aharonov-Bohm phase. We show that magnetic translation on the two-dimensional cylinder implemented by the Schr\"odinger time evolution truly leads to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. The magnetic field normal to the cylinder's surface is given by a line of magnetic monopoles which can be simulated in cold atom experiments. We propose an extension of the Aharonov-Bohm experiment which can demonstrate the mutually counteracting effect between the local magnetic translation geometric phase and the topological phase of Aharonov and Bohm.

Landau problem with a general time-dependent electric field

The time evolution is studied for the Landau problem with a general time dependent electric field ${\bf E}(t)$ in a plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. A general and explicit factorization of the time evolution operator is derived with each factor having a clear physical interpretation. The factorization consists of a geometric operator (path-ordered magnetic translation), a dynamical operator generated by the usual time-independent Landau Hamiltonian, and a nonadiabatic operator that determines the transition probabilities among the Landau levels. Since the path-ordered magnetic translation and the nonadiabatic operators are, up to completely determined numerical phase factors, just ordinary exponentials whose exponents are explicitly expressible in terms of the canonical variables, all of the factors in the factorization are explicitly constructed. The numerical phase factors are quantum mechanical in nature and could be of significance in interference experiments. The factorization is unique from the point of view of the quantum adiabatic theorem and provides a demonstration of how the quantum adiabatic theorem (incorporating the Berry phase phenomenon) is realized when infinitely degenerate energy levels are involved. Since the factorization separates the effect caused by the electric field into a geometric factor and a nonadiabatic factor, it makes possible to calculate the nonadiabatic transition probabilities near the adiabatic limit. A formula for matrix elements that determines the mixing of the Landau levels for a general, non-adiabatic evolution is also provided by the factorization.

Landau electron in a rotating environment: a general factorization of time evolution

For the Landau problem with a rotating magnetic field and a potential in the (changing) direction of the field, we derive a general factorization of the time evolution operator that includes the adiabatic factorization as a special case. We assume that the direction of the magnetic field changes with time in a general way, so the Heisenberg equations of motion cannot be solved by quadrature. Also, the potential is assumed to be of a general form. We use the rotation operator associated with the solid angle Berry phase to transform the problem to a rotating reference frame that follows the direction of the magnetic field. In the rotating reference frame, we derive a natural factorization of the time evolution operator by recognizing the crucial role played by a gauge transformation. The major complexity of the problem arises from the coupling between motion in the direction of the magnetic field and motion perpendicular to the field. In the factorization, this complexity is consolidated into a single operator that approaches the identity operator when the potential confines the particle sufficiently close to a plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. The structure of this operator is clarified by deriving an expression for its generating Hamiltonian. The magnetic translation is the most notable physical consequence in the adiabatic limit. This and the non-adiabatic effects are studied as consequences of the general factorization.

Spin in a General Time Varying Magnetic Field: Generalization of the Adiabatic Factorization of Time Evolution

An extension of the adiabatic factorization of the time evolution operator is studied for spin in a general time varying magnetic field $B(t)$. When $B(t)$ changes adiabatically, such a factorization reduces to the product of the geometric operator which embodies the Berry phase phenomenon and a usual dynamical operator. For a general time variation of $B(t)$, there should be another operator $N(t)$ in the factorization that is related to non-adiabatic transitions. A simple and explicit expression for the instantaneous angular velocity of this operator is derived. This is done in a way that is independent of any specific representation of spin. Two classes of simple conditions are given under which the operator $N(t)$ can be made explicit. As a special case, a generalization of the traditional magnetic resonance condition is pointed out.

Nonadiabatic factor accompanying magnetic translation of a charged particle

The quantum adiabatic theorem incorporating the Berry phase phenomenon can be characterized as a factorization of the time evolution operator into a path-dependent geometric factor, a usual dynamical factor and a non-adiabatic factor that approaches the identity in the adiabatic limit. We study a case where all these three factors can be constructed explicitly and where the instantaneous Hamiltonian has infinitely degenerate energy eigenstates associated with magnetic translation symmetry. Significance of the non-adiabatic factor in terms of transition probabilities is discussed.

Magnetic translation and Berry's phase factor through adiabatically rotating a magnetic field

For a spin subjected to an adiabatically changing magnetic field, the solid angle result as embodied by a rotation operator is the only path-dependent factor in the quantum evolution operator. For a charged particle, the infinite degeneracy calls for a rigorous investigation. We find that in this case, it is the product of the rotation operator and a path-ordered magnetic translation operator that enters into the evolution operator and determines the geometric phase. This result agrees with the fact that the instantaneous hamiltonian is invariant under magnetic translation as well as rotation. Experimental verification of the result is proposed.
