Higher-order derivatives of first-passage percolation with respect to the environment

We introduce and study derivatives in first-passage percolation with edge weights given by i.i.d. random variables supported on $\{a,b\}$. We show that the variance of the passage time can be expressed in terms of these derivatives. We further analyze their structure and establish several fundamental properties and bounds. Our bounds for the lower Fourier levels on the torus model raise the prospect that, in dimensions 3 and higher, the variance may grow slower than any positive power of $n$. Such growth would contradict the commonly held belief that the fluctuation exponent is positive.

Fourier levels and almost sure bounds on higher-order derivatives in first-passage percolation

The variance of first-passage percolation admits a decomposition into Fourier levels indexed by the order of environment derivatives. These Fourier levels capture how local perturbations of different orders contribute to global fluctuations. In this paper, we investigate higher-order environment derivatives and their Fourier-level structure. We prove that derivatives of orders \(k\in\{2,3,4\}\) are almost surely bounded below by \(-\binom{k-2}{\lceil\frac{k-2}2\rceil}\) and above by \(\binom{k-2}{\lceil\frac{k-2}2\rceil}\). We conjecture that these are the correct bounds for all \(k\), and we construct explicit environments showing that these extreme values can indeed be attained.

Waiting Times for Ties in Random Competitions

Multiple teams participate in a random competition. In each round the winner receives one point. We study the times until ties occur among teams. We construct martingales and supermartingales that enable us to prove the results regarding these stopping times. The problems studied in this paper are motivated by their applications to databases and their storage engines that are based on augmented balanced search trees. The ties in the competitions are related to the necessary rebalancing operations that have to be executed on the database.

Degenerate principal series in the general case

Let $G_n$ denote either the group $SO(2n+1, F)$, $Sp(2n, F)$, or $GSpin(2n+1, F)$ over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic different than two. We determine all composition factors of degenerate principal series of $G_n$, using methods based on the Aubert involution and known results on irreducible subquotiens of the generalized principal series of particular type.

Classification of Strongly Positive Representations of Even General Unitary Groups

We explicitly construct the structure of Jacquet modules of parabolically induced representations of even unitary groups and even general unitary groups over a $p$-adic field $F$ of characteristic different than two. As an application, we obtain a classification of strongly positive discrete series representations of those groups.

A parallel algorithm for the constrained shortest path problem on lattice graphs

The edges of a graph are assigned weights and passage times which are assumed to be positive integers. We present a parallel algorithm for finding the shortest path whose total weight is smaller than a pre-determined value. In each step the processing elements are not analyzing the entire graph. Instead they are focusing on a subset of vertices called {\em active vertices}. The set of active vertices at time $t$ is related to the boundary of the ball $B_t$ of radius $t$ in the first passage percolation metric. Although it is believed that the number of active vertices is an order of magnitude smaller than the size of the graph, we prove that this need not be the case with an example of a graph for which the active vertices form a large fractal. We analyze an OpenCL implementation of the algorithm on GPU for cubes in $\mathbb Z^d$.

On Jacquet modules of representations of segment type

We study representations of segment type of groups Sp(n) and SO(2n+1, F) over a local non-archimedean field, which play a fundamental role in the constructions of discrete series, and obtain a complete description of the Jacquet modules of these representations. Also, we provide an alternative way for determination of Jacquet modules of strongly positive discrete series and a description of top Jacquet modules of general discrete series. In this version are corrected few typographical errors which exist in the published version of this paper (see page 5 of the paper for more details).

Deterministic walk in an excited random environment

Deterministic walk in an excited random environment is a non-Markov integer-valued process $(X_n)_{n=0}^{\infty}$, whose jump at time $n$ depends on the number of visits to the site $X_n$. The environment can be understood as stacks of cookies on each site of $\mathbb Z$. Once all cookies are consumed at a given site, every subsequent visit will result in a walk taking a step according to the direction prescribed by the last consumed cookie. If each site has exactly one cookie, then the walk ends in a loop if it ever visits the same site twice. If the number of cookies per site is increased to two, the walk can visit a site infinitely many times and still not end in a loop. Nevertheless the moments of $X_n$ are sub-linear in $n$ and we establish monotonicity results on the environment that imply large deviations.

Inequalities with Determinants of Perturbed Positive Matrices

We prove two inequalities regarding the ratio $\det(A+D)/\det A$ of the determinant of a positive-definite matrix $A$ and the determinant of its perturbation $A+D$. In the first problem, we study the perturbations that happen when positive matrices are added to diagonal blocks of the original matrix. In the second problem, the perturbations are added to the inverses of the matrices.

A Sublinear Variance Bound for Solutions of a Random Hamilton Jacobi Equation

We estimate the variance of the value function for a random optimal control problem. The value function is the solution $w^\epsilon$ of a Hamilton-Jacobi equation with random Hamiltonian $H(p,x,\omega) = K(p) - V(x/\epsilon,\omega)$ in dimension $d \geq 2$. It is known that homogenization occurs as $\epsilon \to 0$, but little is known about the statistical fluctuations of $w^\epsilon$. Our main result shows that the variance of the solution $w^\epsilon$ is bounded by $O(\epsilon/|\log \epsilon|)$. The proof relies on a modified Poincar\'e inequality of Talagrand.

Large Deviations for Processes in Random Environments with Jumps

A deterministic walk in a random environment can be understood as a general random process with finite-range dependence that starts repeating a loop once it reaches a site it has visited before. Such process lacks the Markov property. We study the exponential decay of the probabilities that the walk will reach sites located far away from the origin. We also study a similar problem for the continuous analogue: the process that is a solution to an ODE with random coefficients. In this second model the environment also has "teleports" which are the regions from where the process can make discontinuous jumps.
