Magnetic Field Conforming Multiscale Formulations for Locally-Confined Nonlinear Eddy Current Problems Using the FE-HMM Method

Magnetic composites used for the conversion of electrical energy often incorporate ferromagnetic inclusions insulated from each other to mitigate eddy current losses. Numerical models for these composites must be robust enough to address potential convergence issues arising from the presence of nonlinear magnetic inclusions and presence of significant confined eddy currents in the cell. This paper introduces an $\mathbf{h}$-conforming multiscale formulation for magnetic composites in a periodic framework. The proposed method uses the Heterogeneous Multiscale Method (HMM) with two mesoscale problems: a magnetoquasistatic problem for upscaling the homogenized magnetic flux density $\mathbf{B}_M$ and a magnetostatic problem for upscaling the macroscale incremental reluctivity $(\partial \mathbf{B}_M/\partial \mathbf{H}_M)$. Additionally, the method uses relaxed Newton--Raphson schemes at both macro and mesoscale levels to mitigate the well-known NR convergence issue linked to nonlinear BH constitutive laws in $\mathbf{h}$-conforming formulations. The accuracy and performance of the formulation are evaluated using 2D and 3D idealized periodic soft magnetic composites with linear and nonlinear BH curves. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates that the magnetoquasistatic mesoscale problem can be replaced by a magnet a

Modeling and simulation of nonlinear electro-thermo-mechanical continua with application to shape memory polymeric medical devices

Shape memory materials have gained considerable attention thanks to their ability to change physical properties when subjected to external stimuli such as temperature, pH, humidity, electromagnetic fields, etc. These materials are increasingly used for a large number of biomedical applications. For applications inside the human body, contactless control can be achieved by the addition of electric and/or magnetic particles that can react to electromagnetic fields, thus leading to a composite biomaterial. The difficulty of developing accurate numerical models for smart materials results from their multiscale nature and from the multiphysics coupling of involved phenomena. This coupling involves electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical problems. This paper contributes to the multiphysics modelling of a shape memory polymer material used as a medical stent. The stent is excited by electromagnetic fields produced by a coil which can be wrapped around a failing organ. In this paper we develop large deformation formulations for the coupled electro-thermo-mechanical problem using the electric potential to solve the electric problem. The formulations are then discretized and solved using the finite element method. Results are validated by comparison with results in the literature.

A New Parareal Algorithm for Problems with Discontinuous Sources

The Parareal algorithm allows to solve evolution problems exploiting parallelization in time. Its convergence and stability have been proved under the assumption of regular (smooth) inputs. We present and analyze here a new Parareal algorithm for ordinary differential equations which involve discontinuous right-hand sides. Such situations occur in various applications, e.g., when an electric device is supplied with a pulse-width-modulated signal. Our new Parareal algorithm uses a smooth input for the coarse problem with reduced dynamics. We derive error estimates that show how the input reduction influences the overall convergence rate of the algorithm. We support our theoretical results by numerical experiments, and also test our new Parareal algorithm in an eddy current simulation of an induction machine.

Multiscale Finite Element Modeling of Nonlinear Magnetoquasistatic Problems Using Magnetic Induction Conforming Formulations

In this paper we develop magnetic induction conforming multiscale formulations for magnetoquasistatic problems involving periodic materials. The formulations are derived using the periodic homogenization theory and applied within a heterogeneous multiscale approach. Therefore the fine-scale problem is replaced by a macroscale problem defined on a coarse mesh that covers the entire domain and many mesoscale problems defined on finely-meshed small areas around some points of interest of the macroscale mesh (e.g. numerical quadrature points). The exchange of information between these macro and meso problems is thoroughly explained in this paper. For the sake of validation, we consider a two-dimensional geometry of an idealized periodic soft magnetic composite.

Parallel-In-Time Simulation of Eddy Current Problems Using Parareal

In this contribution the usage of the Parareal method is proposed for the time-parallel solution of the eddy current problem. The method is adapted to the particular challenges of the problem that are related to the differential algebraic character due to non-conducting regions. It is shown how the necessary modification can be automatically incorporated by using a suitable time stepping method. The paper closes with a first demonstration of a simulation of a realistic four-pole induction machine model using Parareal.

ParaExp using Leapfrog as Integrator for High-Frequency Electromagnetic Simulations

Recently, ParaExp was proposed for the time integration of linear hyperbolic problems. It splits the time interval of interest into sub-intervals and computes the solution on each sub-interval in parallel. The overall solution is decomposed into a particular solution defined on each sub-interval with zero initial conditions and a homogeneous solution propagated by the matrix exponential applied to the initial conditions. The efficiency of the method depends on fast approximations of this matrix exponential based on recent results from numerical linear algebra. This paper deals with the application of ParaExp in combination with Leapfrog to electromagnetic wave problems in time-domain. Numerical tests are carried out for a simple toy problem and a realistic spiral inductor model discretized by the Finite Integration Technique.

Waveform Relaxation for the Computational Homogenization of Multiscale Magnetoquasistatic Problems

This paper proposes the application of the waveform relaxation method to the homogenization of multiscale magnetoquasistatic problems. In the monolithic heterogeneous multiscale method, the nonlinear macroscale problem is solved using the Newton--Raphson scheme. The resolution of many mesoscale problems per Gauss point allows to compute the homogenized constitutive law and its derivative by finite differences. In the proposed approach, the macroscale problem and the mesoscale problems are weakly coupled and solved separately using the finite element method on time intervals for several waveform relaxation iterations. The exchange of information between both problems is still carried out using the heterogeneous multiscale method. However, the partial derivatives can now be evaluated exactly by solving only one mesoscale problem per Gauss point.

An Application of ParaExp to Electromagnetic Wave Problems

Recently, ParaExp was proposed for the time integration of hyperbolic problems. It splits the time interval of interest into sub-intervals and computes the solution on each sub-interval in parallel. The overall solution is decomposed into a particular solution defined on each sub-interval with zero initial conditions and a homogeneous solution propagated by the matrix exponential applied to the initial conditions. The efficiency of the method results from fast approximations of this matrix exponential using tools from linear algebra. This paper deals with the application of ParaExp to electromagnetic wave problems in time-domain. Numerical tests are carried out for an electric circuit and an electromagnetic wave problem discretized by the Finite Integration Technique.
