Left-invariant ${\rm G}_2^*$-structures of type III

We investigate left-invariant ${\rm G}_2^*$-structures on 7-dimensional Lie groups, focusing on those whose holonomy algebras are indecomposable and of type III, the latter meaning that the socle of the holonomy representation is maximal. Building on the classification of indecomposable holonomy algebras contained in $\mathfrak g_2^*$, we determine which ones arise as infinitesimal holonomy algebras of type III for left-invariant ${\rm G}_2^*$-structures. Our main result shows that only abelian subalgebras occur, and these are necessarily of dimension two or three. Moreover, we provide explicit Lie groups with left-invariant ${\rm G}_2^*$-structures realizing these abelian holonomies.

Pseudo-Riemannian symmetric spaces of signature (2,2)

We study all four-dimensional simply-connected indecomposable non-semisimple pseudo-Riemannian symmetric spaces whose metric has signature (2,2). We present models and compute their isometry groups. We solve the problem of the existence or non-existence of compact quotients by properly acting discrete subgroups of the isometry group. This continues and completes earlier work by Maeta.

Topology and Dynamics of compact plane waves

We study compact locally homogeneous plane waves. Such a manifold is a quotient of a homogeneous plane wave $X$ by a discrete subgroup of its isometry group. This quotient is called standard if the discrete subgroup is contained in a connected subgroup of the isometry group that acts properly cocompactly on $X$. We show that compact quotients of homogeneous plane waves are ``essentially" standard; more precisely, we show that they are standard or `semi-standard'. We find conditions which ensure that a quotient is not only semi-standard but even standard. As a consequence of these results, we obtain that the flow of the parallel isotropic vector field of a compact locally homogeneous plane wave is equicontinuous.

The cubic Dirac operator on compact quotients of the oscillator group

We determine the spectrum of Kostant's cubic Dirac operator $D^{1/3}$ on locally symmetric Lorentzian manifolds of the form $\Gamma\backslash {\rm Osc}_1$, where ${\rm Osc}_1$ is the four-dimensional oscillator group and $\Gamma\subset {\rm Osc}_1$ is a (cocompact) lattice. Moreover, we give an explicit decomposition of the regular representation of ${\rm Osc}_1$ on $L^2$-sections of the spinor bundle into irreducible subrepresentations and we determine the eigenspaces of $D^{1/3}$.

Lattices in the four-dimensional split oscillator group

Besides the oscillator group, there is another four-dimensional non-abelian solvable Lie group that admits a bi-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric. It is called split oscillator group (sometimes also hyperbolic oscillator group or Boidol's group). We parametrise the set of lattices in this group and develop a method to classify these lattices up automorphisms of the ambient group. We show that their commensurability classes are in bijection with the set of real quadratic fields.

A new example of a compact ERP G2-structure

We provide the second known example of an extremally Ricci pinched closed G2-structure on a compact 7-manifold, by finding a lattice in the only unimodular solvable Lie group admitting a left-invariant G2-structure. Furthermore, the Laplacian coflow and its solitons are studied on a 6-parameter family of left-invariant coclosed G2-structures on this Lie group. In this way, we obtain a 4-parameter subfamily of expanding solitons. The family is locally pairwise non-equivalent.

Skew Killing spinors in four dimensions

This paper is devoted to the classification of 4-dimensional Riemannian spin manifolds carrying skew Killing spinors. A skew Killing spinor $\psi$ is a spinor that satisfies the equation $\nabla$X$\psi$ = AX $\times$ $\psi$ with a skew-symmetric endomorphism A. We consider the degenerate case, where the rank of A is at most two everywhere and the non-degenerate case, where the rank of A is four everywhere. We prove that in the degenerate case the manifold is locally isometric to the Riemannian product R x N with N having a skew Killing spinor and we explain under which conditions on the spinor the special case of a local isometry to S 2 x R 2 occurs. In the non-degenerate case, the existence of skew Killing spinors is related to doubly warped products whose defining data we will describe.

Spectra of Compact Quotients of the Oscillator Group

This paper is a contribution to harmonic analysis of compact solvmanifolds. We consider the four-dimensional oscillator group ${\rm Osc}_1$, which is a semi-direct product of the three-dimensional Heisenberg group and the real line. We classify the lattices of ${\rm Osc}_1$ up to inner automorphisms of ${\rm Osc}_1$. For every lattice $L$ in ${\rm Osc}_1$, we compute the decomposition of the right regular representation of ${\rm Osc}_1$ on $L^2(L\backslash{\rm Osc}_1)$ into irreducible unitary representations. This decomposition allows the explicit computation of the spectrum of the wave operator on the compact locally-symmetric Lorentzian manifold $L\backslash {\rm Osc}_1$.

Existence of cocompact lattices in Lie groups with a bi-invariant metric of index 2

We study the existence of cocompact lattices in Lie groups with bi-invariant metric of signature $(2,n-2)$. We assume in addition that the Lie groups under consideration are simply-connected, indecomposable and solvable. Then their centre is one- or two-dimensional. In both cases, a parametrisation of the set of such Lie groups is known. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a lattice in terms of these parameters. For groups with one-dimensional centre this problem is related to Salem numbers.

Local Type I Metrics with Holonomy in ${\rm G}_{2}^*$

By [arXiv:1604.00528], a list of possible holonomy algebras for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with an indecomposable torsion free ${\rm G}_{2}^*$-structure is known. Here indecomposability means that the standard representation of the algebra on ${\mathbb R}^{4,3}$ does not leave invariant any proper non-degenerate subspace. The dimension of the socle of this representation is called the type of the Lie algebra. It is equal to one, two or three. In the present paper, we use Cartan's theory of exterior differential systems to show that all Lie algebras of Type I from the list in [arXiv:1604.00528] can indeed be realised as the holonomy of a local metric. All these Lie algebras are contained in the maximal parabolic subalgebra $\mathfrak p_1$ that stabilises one isotropic line of ${\mathbb R}^{4,3}$. In particular, we realise $\mathfrak p_1$ by a local metric.

Holonomy groups of $G_2^*$-manifolds

We classify the holonomy algebras of manifolds admitting an indecomposable torsion free $G_2^*$-structure, i.e. for which the holonomy representation does not leave invariant any proper non-degenerate subspace. We realize some of these Lie algebras as holonomy algebras of left-invariant metrics on Lie groups.

Compact quotients of Cahen-Wallach spaces

Indecomposable symmetric Lorentzian manifolds of non-constant curvature are called Cahen-Wallach spaces. Their isometry classes are described by continuous families of real parameters. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of compact quotients of Cahen-Wallach spaces in terms of these parameters.

Spectra of sub-Dirac operators on certain nilmanifolds

We study sub-Dirac operators that are associated with left-invariant bracket-generating sub-Riemannian structures on compact quotients of nilpotent semi-direct products $G=\mathbb{R}^n\rtimes_A\mathbb{R}$. We will prove that these operators admit an $L^2$-basis of eigenfunctions. Explicit examples show that the spectrum of these operators can be non-discrete and that eigenvalues may have infinite multiplicity.

A splitting theorem for higher order parallel immersions

We consider isometric immersions into space forms having the second fundamental form parallel at order k. We show that this class of immersions consists of local products, in a suitably defined sense, of parallel immersions and normally flat immersions of flat spaces.

Indefinite extrinsic symmetric spaces II

Having developed a description of indefinite extrinsic symmetric spaces by corresponding infinitesimal objects in the preceding paper we now study the classification problem for these algebraic objects. In most cases the transvection group of an indefinite extrinsic symmetric space is not semisimple, which makes the classification difficult. We use the recently developed method of quadratic extensions for (h,K)-invariant metric Lie algebras to tackle this problem. We obtain a one-to-one correspondence between isometry classes of extrinsic symmetric spaces and a certain cohomology set. This allows a systematic construction of extrinsic symmetric spaces and explicit classification results, e.g., if the metric of the embedded manifold or the ambient space has a small index. We will illustrate this by classifying all Lorentzian extrinsic symmetric spaces.
