Descriptional Complexity of Winning Sets of Regular Languages

We investigate certain word-construction games with variable turn orders. In these games, Alice and Bob take turns on choosing consecutive letters of a word of fixed length, with Alice winning if the result lies in a predetermined target language. The turn orders that result in a win for Alice form a binary language that is regular whenever the target language is, and we prove some upper and lower bounds for its state complexity based on that of the target language.

A Physically Universal Turing Machine

We construct a two-dimensional Turing machine that is physically universal in both the moving tape and moving head model. In particular, it is mixing of all finite orders in both models. We also provide a variant that is physically universal in the moving tape model, but not in the moving head model.

Gardens of Eden in the Game of Life

We prove that in the Game of Life, if the thickness-four zero-padding of a rectangular pattern is not an orphan, then the corresponding finite-support configuration is not a Garden of Eden, and that the preimage of every finite-support configuration has dense semilinear configurations. In particular finite-support Gardens of Eden are in co-NP.

Recoding Lie algebraic subshifts

We study internal Lie algebras in the category of subshifts on a fixed group -- or Lie algebraic subshifts for short. We show that if the acting group is virtually polycyclic and the underlying vector space has dense homoclinic points, such subshifts can be recoded to have a cellwise Lie bracket. On the other hand there exist Lie algebraic subshifts (on any finitely-generated non-torsion group) with cellwise vector space operations whose bracket cannot be recoded to be cellwise. We also show that one-dimensional full vector shifts with cellwise vector space operations can support infinitely many compatible Lie brackets even up to automorphisms of the underlying vector shift, and we state the classification problem of such brackets. From attempts to generalize these results to other acting groups, the following questions arise: Does every f.g. group admit a linear cellular automaton of infinite order? Which groups admit abelian group shifts whose homoclinic group is not generated by finitely many orbits? For the first question, we show that the Grigorchuk group admits such a CA, and for the second we show that the lamplighter group admits such group shifts.

Nilpotent Endomorphisms of Expansive Group Actions

We consider expansive group actions on a compact metric space containing a special fixed point denoted by $0$, and endomorphisms of such systems whose forward trajectories are attracted toward $0$. Such endomorphisms are called asymptotically nilpotent, and we study the conditions in which they are nilpotent, that is, map the entire space to $0$ in a finite number of iterations. We show that for a large class of discrete groups, this property of nil-rigidity holds for all expansive actions that satisfy a natural specification-like property and have dense homoclinic points. Our main result in particular shows that the class includes all residually finite solvable groups and all groups of polynomial growth. For expansive actions of the group $\mathbb{Z}$, we show that a very weak gluing property suffices for nil-rigidity. For $\mathbb{Z}^2$-subshifts of finite type, we show that the block-gluing property suffices. The study of nil-rigidity is motivated by two aspects of the theory of cellular automata and symbolic dynamics: It can be seen as a finiteness property for groups, which is representative of the theory of cellular automata on groups. Nilpotency also plays a prominent role in the theory of cellular automata as dynamical systems. As a technical tool of possible independent interest, the proof involves the construction of tiered dynamical systems where several groups act on nested subsets of the original space.

Stable Multi-Level Monotonic Eroders

Eroders are monotonic cellular automata with a linearly ordered state set that eventually wipe out any finite island of nonzero states. One-dimensional eroders were studied by Gal'perin in the 1970s, who presented a simple combinatorial characterization of the class. The multi-dimensional case has been studied by Toom and others, but no such characterization has been found. We prove a similar characterization for those one-dimensional monotonic cellular automata that are eroders even in the presence of random noise.

Countable Sofic Shifts with a Periodic Direction

As a variant of the equal entropy cover problem, we ask whether all multidimensional sofic shifts with countably many configurations have SFT covers with countably many configurations. We answer this question in the negative by presenting explicit counterexamples. We formulate necessary conditions for a vertically periodic shift space to have a countable SFT cover, and prove that they are sufficient in a natural (but quite restricted) subclass of shift spaces.

Category Theory of Symbolic Dynamics

We study the central objects of symbolic dynamics, that is, subshifts and block maps, from the perspective of basic category theory, and present several natural categories with subshifts as objects and block maps as morphisms. Our main goals are to find universal objects in these symbolic categories, to classify their block maps based on their category theoretic properties, and to establish as many natural properties (finite completeness, regularity etc.) as possible. Existing definitions in category theory suggest interesting new problems for block maps. Our main technical contributions are the solution to the dual problem of the Extension Lemma and results on certain types of conserved quantities, suggested by the concept of a coequalizer.

Cantor-Bendixson ranks of countable SFTs

We show that the possible Cantor-Bendixson ranks of countable SFTs are exactly the finite ordinals and ordinals of the form $λ+ 3$, where $λ$ is a computable ordinal. This result was claimed by the author in his PhD dissertation, but the proof contains an error, which is fixed in this note.

Factor Colorings of Linearly Recurrent Words

In this short article, we study factor colorings of aperiodic linearly recurrent infinite words. We show that there always exists a coloring which does not admit a monochromatic factorization of the word into factors of increasing lengths.

A One-Dimensional Physically Universal Cellular Automaton

Physical universality of a cellular automaton was defined by Janzing in 2010 as the ability to implement an arbitrary transformation of spatial patterns. In 2014, Schaeffer gave a construction of a two-dimensional physically universal cellular automaton. We construct a one-dimensional version of the automaton.

PSPACE-Completeness of Majority Automata Networks

We study the dynamics of majority automata networks when the vertices are updated according to a block sequential updating scheme. In particular, we show that the complexity of the problem of predicting an eventual state change in some vertex, given an initial configuration, is PSPACE-complete.

A Uniquely Ergodic Cellular Automaton

We construct a one-dimensional uniquely ergodic cellular automaton which is not nilpotent. This automaton can perform asymptotically infinitely sparse computation, which nevertheless never disappears completely. The construction builds on the self-simulating automaton of Gács. We also prove related results of dynamical and computational nature, including the undecidability of unique ergodicity, and the undecidability of nilpotency in uniquely ergodic cellular automata.

Plane-Walking Automata

In this article, we study classes of multidimensional subshifts defined by multihead finite automata, in particular the hierarchy of classes of subshifts defined as the number of heads grows. The hierarchy collapses on the third level, where all co-recursively enumerable subshifts are obtained in every dimension. We also compare these classes to SFTs and sofic shifts. We are unable to separate the second and third level of the hierarchy in one and two dimensions, and suggest a related open problem for two-counter machines.

Quantifier Extensions of Multidimensional Sofic Shifts

We define a pair of simple combinatorial operations on subshifts, called existential and universal extensions, and study their basic properties. We prove that the existential extension of a sofic shift by another sofic shift is always sofic, and the same holds for the universal extension in one dimension. However, we also show by a construction that universal extensions of two-dimensional sofic shifts may not be sofic, even if the subshift we extend by is very simple.

Subshifts, MSO Logic, and Collapsing Hierarchies

We use monadic second-order logic to define two-dimensional subshifts, or sets of colorings of the infinite plane. We present a natural family of quantifier alternation hierarchies, and show that they all collapse to the third level. In particular, this solves an open problem of [Jeandel & Theyssier 2013]. The results are in stark contrast with picture languages, where such hierarchies are usually infinite.

Trace Complexity of Chaotic Reversible Cellular Automata

Delvenne, Kůrka and Blondel have defined new notions of computational complexity for arbitrary symbolic systems, and shown examples of effective systems that are computationally universal in this sense. The notion is defined in terms of the trace function of the system, and aims to capture its dynamics. We present a Devaney-chaotic reversible cellular automaton that is universal in their sense, answering a question that they explicitly left open. We also discuss some implications and limitations of the construction.
