Scattering and Tunneling in Real Quantum Mechanics

We establish the general form of the evolution equation and study scattering and tunneling in real quantum mechanics. We prove an analogue of Stone's theorem for a real Kahler space and derive the corresponding general evolution equation, whose evolution operator is both orthogonal and symplectic. We formulate scattering theory in terms of real wave operators and the associated S-matrix. For the class of potentials considered, we show that the differential scattering cross section is equivalent to that obtained in standard complex quantum mechanics. We also show that the tunneling probability in real quantum mechanics is identical to that in complex quantum mechanics.

Measures and Trajectory Properties in Oscillator Systems

This paper investigates the properties of trajectories in harmonic oscillator systems equipped with a point, absolutely continuous, or singular measure. As demonstrated in [30], infinite-dimensional linear flows of countable oscillator systems exhibit a new class of trajectory behavior. Specifically, these trajectories are non-periodic, and their projections onto any four-dimensional symplectic subspace fail to be dense in the corresponding projection of the invariant torus. Such trajectories do not arise in finite-dimensional systems, are non-generic for countable oscillator systems, but become generic in the continual case. We prove that for a countable harmonic oscillator system, every point on a non-degenerate invariant torus is a non-wandering point of the flow. In contrast, for a continual system with an absolutely continuous measure, all points on such a torus are wandering. Furthermore, for continual systems with a singular measure, we establish sufficient conditions on the measure and torus that rule out the existence of both transitive trajectories and non-wandering points. As an application, we exhibit a class of singular Bernoulli measures satisfying these conditions.

Notes on Real Quantum Mechanics in a Kahler Space

The necessity of complex numbers in quantum mechanics has long been debated. This paper develops a real Kahler space formulation of quantum mechanics [19], asserting equivalence to the standard complex Hilbert space framework. By mapping the complex Hilbert space ${\mathbb C}^n$ to a real Kahler space $K ^{2n}$, i.e. ${\mathbb R}^{2n}$ equipped with a metric, a symplectic structure and an automorphism, we establish a correspondence between Hermitian operators in ${\mathbb C}^n$ and real operators in $K^{2n}$. While the isomorphism appears straightforward some subtleties emerge: (i) the overcounting of composite system states under tensor products in ${\mathbb R}^{2n}$, and (ii) the double degeneracy of operator spectra in the real formulation. Through a systematic investigation of these challenges, we clarify the structural relationship between real and complex formulations, resolve ambiguities in composite system representations, and analyze spectral consequences. Our results reaffirm the equivalence of the two frameworks while highlighting nuanced distinctions with implications for foundational debates on locality, phase invariance, and the role of complex numbers in quantum theory.

Real Quantum Mechanics in a Kahler Space

In this paper, we demonstrate the equivalence between the complex Hilbert space and real Kahler space formulations of quantum mechanics. Complex numbers play an important role in the traditional formulation of quantum mechanics in complex Hilbert spaces. However, the necessity of complex numbers--as opposed to their mere convenience--remains a subject of debate. Several alternative formulations of quantum mechanics using real numbers have been proposed. In this paper, we demonstrate that standard quantum mechanics, formulated in a complex Hilbert space, admits an equivalent reformulation in a real Kahler space. By establishing a natural isomorphism between the operator theories of the complex Hilbert space and the real Kahler space, we prove the equivalence of the two formulations including composite system. This Kahler-space framework preserves all essential features of quantum mechanics while offering a key advantage: it inherently incorporates a Hamiltonian symplectic structure analogous to classical mechanics. This structural alignment provides a unified geometric perspective for both classical and quantum dynamics. Additionally, we show that the ergodicity of finite-dimensional quantum systems becomes manifest in this framework, resolving interpretational ambiguities present in conventional complex formulations.

On the Equivalence Between the Schrodinger Equation in Quantum Mechanics and the Euler-Bernoulli Equation in Elasticity Theory

In this note, we show that the Schrodinger equation in quantum mechanics is mathematically equivalent to the Euler-Bernoulli equation for vibrating beams and plates in elasticity theory, with dependent initial data. Remarks are made on potential applications of this equivalence for symplectic and quantum computing, the two-slit experiment using vibrating beams and plates, and the p-adic Euler-Bernoulli equation.

Black Brane/Bose Gase Duality and Third Law of Thermodynamics

In the thermodynamics of black holes in asymptotically flat space, the third law of thermodynamics is violated, and entropy cannot be consistently modeled through conventional statistical mechanics. Notably, the third law of thermodynamics is violated for the Schwarzschild black hole, and its entropy can only be described using an unconventional model, such as a Bose gas in negative dimensions. In contrast, for certain black brane solutions such as Poincare AdS black branes, Lifshitz black branes, and anisotropic Lifshitz-type black branes, the third law is preserved, with entropy vanishing as temperature approaches zero. In this paper, we extend the previously established duality between black hole and Bose gas thermodynamics to black branes. Specifically, the Poincare black brane in $D$ spacetime dimensions corresponds to a non-relativistic Bose gas in $2(D-2)$ spatial dimensions. Furthermore, the duality between Lifshitz branes and Bose gases relates a Lifshitz brane with exponent $\alpha$ in $D$-dimensional spacetime to a Bose gas of quasi-particles with energy $k^\alpha$ in $D-2$ spatial dimensions.

Quantum vs. Symplectic Computers

In this paper, we propose the concept of symplectic computers, which have the potential to be more powerful than quantum computers. Unlike quantum computing, which consists of a sequence of unitary transformations (gates) and projectors (measurements), symplectic computation involves a sequence of symplectic transformations and measurements. The proposal to explore symplectic computers is based on the following quantum-symplectic duality. The Schr\"odinger equation in its standard complex form describes the unitary evolution of a quantum system, while its real form describes the symplectic evolution of a classical mechanical system. This quantum-symplectic duality can be leveraged to enhance the capabilities of quantum and symplectic computers. In this symplectic approach, the role of a quantum bit (qubit) is taken by a symplectic bit (symbit).

Information Problem in Black Holes and Cosmology and Ghosts in Quadratic Gravity

Black hole information problem is the question about unitarity of the evolution operator during the collapse and evaporation of the black hole. One can ask the same question about unitarity of quantum and inflationary cosmology. In this paper we argue that in both cases, for black holes and for cosmology, the answer is negative and we face non-unitarity. Such a question can not be addressed by using the fixed classical gravitational background since one has to take into account the backreaction. To his end one uses the semi-classical gravity, which includes the expectation value of the energy - momentum tensor operator of the matter fields. One has to renormalize the energy-momentum tensor and one gets an effective action which contains quadratic terms in scalar curvature and Ricci tensor. Such quadratic gravity contains ghosts which in fact lead to violation of unitarity in black holes and cosmology. We discuss the question whether black holes will emit ghosts. One can try to restrict ourselves to the $f(R)$ gravity that seems is a good approximation to the semi-classical gravity and widely used in cosmology. The black hole entropy in $f(R)$ gravity is different from the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and from entanglement island entropy. The black hole entropy in $R+R^2$ gravity goes to a constant during the evaporation process. This can be interpreted as another indication to the possible non-unitarity in black holes and cosmology

No Violation of Bell-CHSH Inequalities at Large Distances

The usual derivation of the violation of Bell-type inequalities can be applied actually only for small distances between detectors. It does not take into account the dependence of the quantum mechanical wave function on space-time variables. We study the behavior of entangled photons obtained in spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) experiments and show that at large distances there is in fact no violation of the Bell-CHSH inequalities. We show that the initial entangled states become disentangled at large space-like distances. This does not contradict the violation of Bell inequalities observed at small distances between detectors. We propose an experiment to study the dependence of the quantum correlation function and Bell value on increasing distance between detectors. We predict that these quantities decrease inversely proportional to the increase of the distance between the detectors.

Cosmological Constant and Maximum of Entropy for de Sitter Space

There are at least two cosmological constants calling for explanation. The first one describes the quasi-de Sitter inflation in the early universe, and the second describes the current acceleration of the universe associated with dark energy. An approach to the computation of the inflationary cosmological constant in the early universe is proposed. The tunneling and no-boundary proposals suggest that the ground state of the early universe is the de Sitter space. In this paper it is argued that the radius of the de Sitter space, i.e. the cosmological constant, can be computed using the principle of maximum entropy. The universe emerges from ``nothing" that corresponds to a minimum of entropy. The entropy reaches its maximal value for the 4-dimensional de Sitter space with the inflationary cosmological constant $\Lambda=3\pi\,\exp\{-\psi(3/2)\}$, where $\psi$ is the digamma function, $\Lambda\approx 9.087$ in Planck units.

Violation of the Third Law of Thermodynamics by Black Holes, Riemann Zeta Function and Bose Gas in Negative Dimensions

Black holes violate the third law of thermodynamics in its standard formulation. Schwarzschild black hole entropy is inverse proportional to the square of the temperature $S=1/(16 \pi T^2) $ and tends to infinity rather than zero when the temperature goes to zero. We search for quantum statistical models with such exotic thermodynamic behaviour. It is shown that the Schwarzschild black hole in $D=4 $ spacetime dimensions corresponds to a Bose gas in a space with $d=-\, 4$ negative spatial dimensions. The Riemann zeta function is used to define the entropy of the Bose gas in negative dimension. The correspondence between black holes in higher dimensions and de Sitter spacetime with Bose gases is considered.

Schwarzschild black holes, Islands and Virasoro algebra

The Schwarzschild black hole metric with mass $M$ has the limit of the vanishing mass when one get the Minkowski space. We study behavior of the entanglement entropy by using the island formula and the limit of the vanishing black hole mass. The black hole information problem appears if one considers the lowering its mass. It was noted recently that the formula derived for eternal black holes leads to an increase of the entanglement entropy, which is singular when $M \to 0$. In this process, it arises the other problem of the Schwarzschild black hole explosion, as the black hole temperature blows up as the mass vanishes. We show that it is possible to solve the entropy explosion for small masses, if one admit the following bound: $c<AM$ where $c$ is central charge of the Virasoro algebra, M is black hole mass and A is positive constant. We are examining the possibilities of applying such a mechanism to calculate entropy with and without an island. It was shown that applying the mechanism of the dependence of the central charge on the black hole mass allows us to obtain a similar Page curve without using an island.

Complete evaporation of black holes and Page curves

The problem of complete evaporation of Schwarzschild black holes raised by Hawking is that one has an explosion of the temperature $T=1/8\pi M$ for vanishing black hole mass M. We consider the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole and note that if mass $M$ and charge Q M-C M^3, C>0 for small M then the complete evaporation of black holes without blow-up of temperature is possible. We describe curves on the surface of state equations such that the motion along them provides complete evaporation. The radiation entropy follows the Page curve and vanishes at the end of evaporation. Similar results for rotating Kerr, Schwarzschild-de-Sitter and Reissner-Nordstrom-(Anti)-de-Sitter black holes are discussed.

A Note on Islands in Schwarzschild Black Holes

We consider evaporation of the Schwarzschild black hole and note that island configurations do not provide a bounded entanglement entropy. The same remark is valid also for some other static black holes. A proposal for improving the situation is discussed

Quantum explosions of black holes and thermal coordinates

The Hawking temperature for Schwarzschild black hole $T_H=1/8\pi M$ is singular in the limit of vanishing mass $M\to 0$. However, the Schwarzschild metric itself is regular in this limit, it is reduced to the Minkowski metric and there are no reasons to believe that the temperature becomes infinite. This discrepancy may be due to the singularity of the Kruskal coordinates in this limit. To improve the situation, new coordinates for the Schwarzschild metric are introduced, called thermal coordinates, which depend on the black hole mass $ M $ and the parameter $b$. The thermal coordinates are regular in the limit $M\to 0$ when the Schwarzschild metric reduces to Minkowski metric, written in coordinates dual to the Rindler coordinates. Using the thermal coordinates the Schwarzschild black hole radiation is reconsidered and it is found that the Hawking formula for temperature is valid only for large black holes while for small black holes the temperature is $T=1/2\pi(4M+b)$. The thermal observer in Minkowski space sees radiation with temperature $T=1/2\pi b$, similar to the Unruh effect with non-constant acceleration. During evaporation, in the thermal coordinates the black hole mass is decreasing inverse proportional to time and the black hole lifetime is infinite. More general spherically symmetric metrics are considered and it is found that the property to have a temperature is not restricted to the cases of black holes or constant acceleration, but is valid for any spherically symmetric metric written in thermal coordinates. Implications for primordial black holes and for the information loss problem are mentioned.

Does the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis Imply Thermalization?

Eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) is discussed. We show that one common formulation of ETH does not necessarily imply thermalization of an observable of isolated many body quantum system. To get thermalization one has to postulate the canonical or microcanonical distribution in the ETH-ansatz. More generally, any other average can be postulated in the generalized ETH-ansatz which leads to a corresponding equilibration condition.

Gas of baby universes in JT gravity and matrix models

It has been shown recently by Saad, Shenker and Stanford that the genus expansion of a certain matrix integral generates partition functions of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) quantum gravity on Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus with any fixed number of boundaries. We use an extension of this integral for studying gas of baby universes or wormholes in JT gravity. To investigate the gas nonperturbatively we explore the generating functional of baby universes in the matrix model. The simple particular case when the matrix integral includes the exponential potential is discussed in some detail. We argue that there is a phase transition in the gas of baby universes

Revealing nonperturbative effects in the SYK model

We study the large $N$ saddle points of two SYK chains coupled by an interaction that is nonlocal in Euclidean time. We start from analytic treatment of the free case with $q=2$ and perform the numerical study of the interacting case $q=4$. We show that in both cases there is a nontrivial phase structure with infinite number of phases. Every phase correspond to a saddle point in the non-interacting two-replica SYK. The nontrivial saddle points have non-zero value of the replica-nondiagonal correlator in the sense of quasi-averaging, when the coupling between replicas is turned off. Thus, the nonlocal interaction between replicas provides a protocol for turning the nonperturbatively subleading effects in SYK into non-equilibrium configurations which dominate at large $N$. For comparison we also study two SYK chains with local interaction for $q=2$ and $q=4$. We show that the $q=2$ model also has a similar phase structure, whereas in the $q=4$ model, dual to the traversable wormhole, the phase structure is different.
