Gluon Sivers function in dijet production at the EIC

The transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) factorization theorem for dijet production in deep-inelastic scattering is used here to make predictions of the gluon Sivers function. We revise the previously studied unpolarized case and develop the formalism for a transversely polarized target. We study the impact of TMD evolution in two different schemes and we use the current extractions of the evolution kernel at N$^3$LO to make predictions for the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The results strongly depend on the TMD gluon distributions and their evolution kernel. At the EIC, and for the considered models, large values of the Sivers asymmetry higher than 5$\%$ are predicted.

Event-axis TMD measurements in $e^+e^-$ and SIDIS

Transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) fragmentation in $e^+e^-$ collisions can be studied by measuring hadrons with respect to the thrust axis, and has been measured at Belle. This provides a complementary way to extract TMD fragmentation functions, avoiding the need to disentangle the two TMD fragmentation functions that enter conventional back-to-back hadron-pair measurements. Starting from the established factorization theorems for this observable, we complete the operator-level formulation of the soft ingredients and perform one-loop checks using the $δ$-regulator. We also extend existing results for 1-jettiness factorization in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS), where analogous measurements give access to the TMD parton distribution functions of the incoming hadron. For phenomenology, we discuss the nonperturbative effects and propose a model that captures both the event-shape dependence and correlations between the event-shape and transverse-momentum measurements. We resum the transverse-momentum and thrust logarithms, explore several schemes for treating the latter, and implement it in artemide. As a first validation, we compare to simulated $e^+e^-$ data from Pythia8.3. We find that the proposed nonperturbative model is flexible enough to describe the simulated data, with fitted parameters of the expected size in powers of $Λ_{\rm QCD}/Q$. In this test, the resummation of the logarithms of $q_T/(τQ)$ appears to have little impact on the fit quality, but changes the fit parameters.

Determination of unpolarized TMD distributions from the fit of Drell-Yan and SIDIS data at N$^4$LL

We present a fit of the transverse momentum spectrum for Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering data, based on transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization at N$^4$LL accuracy. Our analysis shows good agreement with the data and confirms the findings of previous studies. Based on this, we extract the unpolarized TMD parton distribution functions, the TMD fragmentation functions, and the Collins-Soper kernel. Compared to earlier works, our study incorporates several improvements, including large-$x$ resummation, flavor and fragmentation function dependence, among others. Additionally, we supplement our extraction with an analysis of the transverse momentum moments of the extracted distributions.

Assessing the sensitivity of Energy-Energy Correlations in $e^+e^-$ annihilation to TMD dynamics

We critically examine the back-to-back limit of the energy-energy correlation (EEC) in $e^+e^-$ annihilation as a potential source of information on the Collins-Soper kernel and the strong coupling constant. The analysis is performed within the framework of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization at next-to-next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^4$LL) accuracy, using a global fit to all available experimental data. Contrary to previous claims, we demonstrate that the current data do not provide meaningful constraints on either the Collins-Soper kernel or $α_s$.

Soft background fields at next-to-leading power in transverse momentum dependent SIDIS with jets

We present a factorization formula for the $e + h \rightarrow e + \text{jet} + X$ cross section at small transverse momenta up to next-to-leading power (NLP), derived using the background field method (BFM) with explicit inclusion of soft modes. We discuss the relation between soft modes and overlap subtractions at NLP, showing that the inclusion of soft modes enables a definition of twist-3 operators with properly subtracted rapidity and endpoint divergences. We also derive the effective current operator at NLP and identify additional structures compared to previous approaches based on soft-collinear effective theory and the BFM without soft modes. Nevertheless, for the hadronic tensor, we find agreement at the perturbative order that we are working at, and identify a condition that needs to be satisfied for this agreement to extend to higher orders. Furthermore, we construct the most general form factors for this process, taking into account the polarization of the initial states. These involve perturbatively-calculable jet functions, opening a path to precise determinations of twist-3 hadronic distributions. Finally, our formalism is illustrated with phenomenological results for a specific azimuthal asymmetry, whose leading-logarithmic contribution depends solely on a twist-3 hadronic distribution and a twist-2 jet function.

Leading qT/Q correction for Drell-Yan in TMD factorization

The transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization theorem accommodates various types of power corrections. Among them, the least studied are qT/Q corrections, which become significant at large values of transverse momentum. These corrections partially originate from higher-twist TMD distributions, which exhibit singularity at small transverse distances. We propose a decomposition that reveals this singularity explicitly, and makes the qT/Q correction manifest. As a concrete application, we consider the next-to-leading power correction for the angular distributions in Drell-Yan, and determine the leading qT/Q corrections. These corrections are significant for the angular distributions A1 and A3, in complete agreement with the data.

Transverse momentum distributions at large-$x$

We investigate the collinear matching of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions at large values of $x$, computing and resumming the leading large-$x$ asymptotics for matching coefficients. The large-$x$ resummation is done directly within TMD distributions, ensuring the process-independence of the result. The derived resummation formulas are valid for all TMD distributions (except the pretzelosity). Their application improves perturbative convergence, provides practical estimation for unknown higher-order contributions, and sets restrictions for the nonperturbative part of models. Using the known anomalous dimensions, resummation can reach N$^3$LL, often exceeding the accuracy of known coefficient functions.

Transverse momentum moments

We establish robust relations between Transverse Momentum Dependent distributions (TMDs) and collinear distributions. We define weighted integrals of TMDs that we call Transverse Momentum Moments (TMMs) and prove that TMMs are equal to collinear distributions evaluated in some minimal subtraction scheme. The conversion to the modified minimal subtraction ($\bar{MS}$) scheme, can be done by a calculable factor, which we derive up to three loops for some cases. We discuss in detail the zeroth, the first, and the second TMMs and provide phenomenological results for them based on the current extractions of TMDs. The results of this paper open new avenues for theoretical and phenomenological investigation of the three-dimensional and collinear hadron structures.

Extraction of unpolarized transverse momentum distributions from fit of Drell-Yan data at N$^4$LL

We present the extraction of unpolarized transverse momentum dependent parton distributions functions (TMDPDFs) and Collins-Soper kernel from the fit of Drell-Yan and weak-vector boson production data. The TMDPDF are parameterized, as commonly done, using their (large transverse momentum) asymptotic matching to PDF. The analysis is done at the next-to-next-to-next-to-next-to leading logarithmic accuracy (N$^4$LL) (performed only approximately because PDF evolution is known so far at next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO)). The non-perturbative model used for TMDPDF is flavor dependent to reduce the colllinear PDF bias. The estimation of uncertainties is done with the replica method and, for the first time, it includes the propagation of uncertainties due to the collinear distributions.

Transverse Momentum Measurements with Jets at Next-to-Leading Power

In view of the increasing precision of theoretical calculations and experimental measurements, power corrections to transverse-momentum-dependent observables are highly important. We study the next-to-leading power corrections for transverse momentum measurements in $e^+ e^- \rightarrow 2$ jets. We obtain a factorized expression for the cross section, which involve twist-2 and twist-3 operators, and identify the new jet functions that appear in it. We calculate these jet functions at order αs for a family of recoil-free schemes, and provide the corresponding anomalous dimensions at leading order. Additionally, we show that the (endpoint) divergences that typically arise in sub-leading-power factorization can be subtracted and cancel for our case. By working with jets, everything is perturbatively calculable and there are substantial simplifications compared to the general next-to-leading power framework. Importantly, our analysis with jets can be extended to semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, with the future Electron-Ion Collider as key application.

Gluon TMD fragmentation function into quarkonium

We compute the gluon transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation function (TMDFF) at next-to-leading order (NLO) into heavy quarkonium in the color-octet $^3S_1^{[8]}$ channel, based on the NRQCD factorization approach. The spurious rapidity divergences are explicitly shown to cancel in a well-defined TMDFF, which incorporates the needed soft factor. We also compute the integrated gluon FF at NLO in the same $^3S_1^{[8]}$ channel, and show that the matching coefficient of the TMDFF onto the FF at large transverse momentum is the expected one. These results are relevant to perform precise and sensible phenomenological studies of transverse-momentum spectra of quarkonium production, for which the production mechanism through fragmentation plays a relevant role, like in the future Electron-Ion Collider.

GTMDs and the factorization of exclusive double Drell-Yan

Different exclusive processes have been proposed to access the generalized transverse momentum dependent distributions (GTMDs) with no proof of factorization, which allows to rigorously define the GTMDs. Using Soft Collinear Effective Theory we derive for the first time the factorization of the differential cross section for the exclusive double Drell-Yan process for the exclusive double Drell-Yan process pion N to N' gamma* gamma* to N' (l^+l^-)(l^+l^-), for small transverse momenta of the photons in terms of a perturbatively calculable hard factor, GTMDs and light-cone wave functions (LCWFs). We find that the hard factor of the process can be obtained from single inclusive Drell-Yan production so that one can resum logarithms at high orders in QCD. We also discuss the evolution of the GTMDs and the LCWFs.

PDF bias and flavor dependence in TMD distributions

Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions match collinear parton density functions (PDF) in the limit of small transverse distances, which is accounted for by global extractions of TMD distributions. We study the influence of the collinear PDF value and uncertainties on the determination of unpolarized TMD distributions and the description of Drell-Yan (DY) and Z-boson production measurements at low transverse momenta. We take into account, for the first time, flavor-dependent non-perturbative TMD profiles. We carry out a Bayesian analysis to incorporate the propagation of PDF uncertainties into TMD extractions. We find that collinear PDF uncertainties and non-perturbative TMD flavor dependence are both essential to obtain reliable TMD determinations, and should be included in future global analyses.

The vector boson transverse momentum distributions

The transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMD) are an essential part of the factorization theorems in vector boson production. They are non-perturbative, double scale dependent functions that asymptotically match onto collinear parton distributions functions (PDF). Once TMD are expressed using PDF, one observes that they are sensitive to the choice and quality of PDF sets (PDF bias). A solution to this problem is found and discussed. Nevertheless the main source of error on vector boson spectra still comes from PDF uncertainty propagation.

Transverse momentum dependent distributions in dijet and heavy hadron pair production at EIC

We discuss the measurement of gluon transverse momentum distribution (TMD) in dijet and heavy hadron pair (HHP) production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. The factorization of these processes in impact parameter space shows the appearance of a specific new soft factor matrix element on top of angular a complex valued anomalous dimensions. We show in detail how these features can be treated consistently and we discuss a scale prescription for the evolution kernel of the dijet soft function. As a result we obtain phenomenological predictions for unpolarized and angular modulated cross-sections for the electron-ion collider (EIC) using current available information on unpolarized TMD.

Transverse momentum dependent operator expansion at next-to-leading power

We develop a method of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) operator expansion that yields the TMD factorization theorem on the operator level. The TMD operators are systematically ordered with respect to TMD-twist, which allows a certain separation of kinematic and genuine power corrections. The process dependence enters via the boundary conditions for the background fields. As a proof of principle, we derive the TMD factorization up to the next-to-leading power $(\sim q_T/Q)$ at the next-to-leading order for any process with two detected states.

W-boson production in TMD factorization

At hadron colliders, the differential cross section for $W$ production can be factorized and it is sensitive transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMD) for low boson transverse momentum. While, often, the corresponding non-perturbative QCD contributions are extrapolated from $Z$ boson production, here we use an existing extraction (based on the code Artemide) of TMD which includes data coming from Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, to provide checks and predictions for the $W$ case. Including fiducial cuts with different configurations and kinematical power corrections, we consider transverse momentum dependent cross sections within several intervals of the vector boson transverse mass. We perform the same study for the $p_T^{W^-}/p_T^{W^+}$ and $p_T^Z/p_T^W$ distributions. We compare our predictions with recent extractions of these quantities at ATLAS and CMS and results from TeVatron. The results encourage a broader experimental and phenomenological work, and a deeper study of TMD for the $W$ case.

TMD factorization for dijet and heavy-meson pair in DIS

We study a transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework for the processes of di-jet and heavy meson pair production in deep-inelastic-scattering in an electron-proton collider, considering the measurement of the transverse momentum imbalance of the two hard probes in the Breit frame. For the factorization theorem we employ soft-collinear and boosted-heavy-quark effective field theories. The factorized cross-section for both processes is sensitive to gluon unpolarized and linearly polarized TMD distributions and requires the introduction of a new soft function. We calculate the new soft function here at one loop, regulating rapidity divergences with the $δ$-regulator. In addition, using a factorization consistency relation and a universality argument regarding the heavy-quark jet function, we obtain the anomalous dimension of the new soft function at two loops.
