WADE: A Reasoning-Annotated Benchmark for Multi-Instance Floating-Waste Grounding with Compact Vision-Language Models

Floating waste in inland waterways threatens aquatic ecosystems and requires timely monitoring under cluttered, multi-object conditions. Existing aquatic-waste datasets provide limited geographic coverage, sparse multi-instance annotations, and little supervision beyond boxes and labels. Compact vision-language models (VLMs) therefore remain insufficiently evaluated for jointly localizing, classifying, counting, and explaining floating waste. We introduce WADE, a reasoning-annotated benchmark containing 2,167 images from rural Bangladesh, 13,608 bounding boxes, and ten waste categories. Each annotation is associated with class-level recognition rules covering visual cues, likely confusions, and discriminative features. We evaluate six VLMs under zero-shot, two-shot, reasoning-guided, and fine-tuned settings using detection, counting, and hallucination metrics. For resource-efficient adaptation, we jointly fine-tune Qwen3-VL-2B on boxes, labels, and reasoning chains using QLoRA. Fine-tuning increases recall from 0.0248 to 0.2339 and F1 from 0.0257 to 0.2163, while reducing image-level hallucination from 0.6836 to 0.0883. However, over three-quarters of instances remain undetected, establishing WADE as a challenging benchmark for dense floating-waste grounding with compact VLMs.

InsideOut: An EfficientNetV2-S Based Deep Learning Framework for Robust Multi-Class Facial Emotion Recognition

Facial Emotion Recognition (FER) is a key task in affective computing, enabling applications in human-computer interaction, e-learning, healthcare, and safety systems. Despite advances in deep learning, FER remains challenging due to occlusions, illumination and pose variations, subtle intra-class differences, and dataset imbalance that hinders recognition of minority emotions. We present InsideOut, a reproducible FER framework built on EfficientNetV2-S with transfer learning, strong data augmentation, and imbalance-aware optimization. The approach standardizes FER2013 images, applies stratified splitting and augmentation, and fine-tunes a lightweight classification head with class-weighted loss to address skewed distributions. InsideOut achieves 62.8% accuracy with a macro averaged F1 of 0.590 on FER2013, showing competitive results compared to conventional CNN baselines. The novelty lies in demonstrating that efficient architectures, combined with tailored imbalance handling, can provide practical, transparent, and reproducible FER solutions.

ShikkhaChain: A Blockchain-Powered Academic Credential Verification System for Bangladesh

Academic credential fraud threatens educational integrity, especially in developing countries like Bangladesh, where verification methods are primarily manual and inefficient. To address this challenge, we present ShikkhaChain, a blockchain-powered certificate management platform designed to securely issue, verify, and revoke academic credentials in a decentralized and tamper-proof manner. Built on Ethereum smart contracts and utilizing IPFS for off-chain storage, the platform offers a transparent, scalable solution accessible through a React-based DApp with MetaMask integration. ShikkhaChain enables role-based access for governments, regulators, institutions, and public verifiers, allowing QR-based validation and on-chain revocation tracking. Our prototype demonstrates enhanced trust, reduced verification time, and improved international credibility for Bangladeshi degrees, promoting a more reliable academic and employment ecosystem.
