Phase space compression of a positive muon beam in two spatial dimensions

We present the first demonstration of simultaneous phase space compression in two spatial dimensions of a positive muon beam, the first stage of the novel high-brightness muon beam under development by the muCool collaboration at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The keV-energy, sub-mm size beam would enable a factor 10$^5$ improvement in brightness for precision muSR, and atomic and particle physics measurements with positive muons. This compression is achieved within a cryogenic helium gas target with a strong density gradient, placed in a homogeneous magnetic field, under the influence of a complex electric field. In the next phase, the muon beam will be extracted into vacuum.

Can the highly symmetric SU(4) spin-orbital model be realized in alpha-ZrCl3?

We study physical properties of a potential candidate for the physical realization of the SU(4) spin-orbital model - layered alpha-ZrCl3. Both DFT and DFT+U+SOC calculations show that this material most probably dimerizes at normal conditions. Therefore it is unlikely that symmetric SU(4) model can be used for description of magnetic properties of alpha-ZrCl3 at low temperatures. In the dimerized structure electrons occupy molecular orbitals formed by the xy orbitals. One might expect a non-magnetic ground state in this case. Interestingly the energy difference between various dimers packings is rather small and thus dimers may start to flow over the lattice as they do in Li2RuO3.

Optimization and first tests of the experimental setup to investigate the double-polarized DD-fusion reactions

The study of DD reactions, especially with polarized reactants, helps for better understanding of the processes taking place in nuclear astrophysics and fusion reactors. At PNPI Gatchina, Russia, the PolFusion experiment with crossing of two polarized beams, i.e. a deuteron and a deuterium beam, is able to measure angular distributions of the differential cross section and, therefore, the spin-correlations coefficients with different combinations of the adjustable nuclear polarization of both beams with a center-of-mass energy between 10 to 100 keV. Some improvements and fine-tuning of the polarized ion source are performed and presented. The atomic beam source for the jet target has been modified as well. An unpolarized experiment with a 10 keV ion beam and heavy water vapor as a target has been carried out with successful registration of the fusion products

Optical Investigations of Charge Gap in Orbital Ordered La1/2Sr3/2MnO4

Temperature and polarization dependent electronic structure of La1/2Sr3/2MnO4 were investigated by optical conductivity analyses. With decreasing temperature, for E//ab, a broad mid-infrared (MIR) peak of La1/2Sr3/2MnO4 becomes narrower and moves to the higher frequency, while that of Nd1/2Sr3/2MnO4 nearly temperature independent. We showed that the MIR peak in La1/2Sr3/2MnO4 originates from orbital ordering associated with CE-type magnetic ordering and that the Jahn-Teller distortion has a significant influence on the width and the position of the MIR peak.

Inverse versus Normal NiAs Structure as High-Pressure Phase of FeO and MnO

The high-pressure phases of FeO and MnO were studied by the first principles calculations. The present theoretical study predicts that the high-pressure phase of MnO is a metallic normal B8 structure (nB8), while that of FeO should take the inverse B8 structure (iB8). The novel feature of the unique high-pressure phase of stoichiometric FeO is that the system should be a band insulator in the ordered antiferromagnetic (AF) state and that the existence of a band gap leads to special stability of the phase. The observed metallicity of the high-pressure and high-temperature phase of FeO may be caused by the loss of AF order and also by the itinerant carriers created by non-stoichiometry. Analysis of x-ray diffraction experiments provides a further support to the present theoretical prediction for both FeO and MnO. Strong stability of the high-pressure phase of FeO will imply possible important roles in Earth's core.
