Performance of the LHCb RICH detectors during LHC Run 2

The performance of the ring-imaging Cherenkov detectors at the LHCb experiment is determined during the LHC Run 2 period between 2015 and 2018. The stability of the Cherenkov angle resolution and number of detected photons with time and running conditions is measured. The particle identification performance is evaluated with data and found to satisfy the requirements of the physics programme.

Signatures of Young Star Formation Activity Within Two Parsecs of Sgr A*

We present radio and infrared observations indicating on-going star formation activity inside the $\sim2-5$ pc circumnuclear ring at the Galactic center. Collectively these measurements suggest a continued disk-based mode of on-going star formation has taken place near Sgr A* over the last few million years. First, VLA observations with spatial resolution 2.17$"\times0.81"$ reveal 13 water masers, several of which have multiple velocity components. The presence of interstellar water masers suggests gas densities that are sufficient for self-gravity to overcome the tidal shear of the 4$\times10^6$ \msol\, black hole. Second, SED modeling of stellar sources indicate massive YSO candidates interior to the molecular ring, supporting in-situ star formation near Sgr A* and appear to show a distribution similar to that of the counter-rotating disks of $\sim$100 OB stars orbiting Sgr A*. Some YSO candidates (e.g., IRS~5) have bow shock structures suggesting that they have have gaseous disks that are phototoevaporated and photoionized by the strong radiation field. Third, we detect clumps of SiO (2-1) and (5-4) line emission in the ring based on CARMA and SMA observations. The FWHM and luminosity of the SiO emission is consistent with shocked protostellar outflows. Fourth, two linear ionized features with an extent of $\sim0.8$ pc show blue and redshifted velocities between $+50$ and $-40$ \kms, suggesting protostellar jet driven outflows with mass loss rates of $\sim5\times10^{-5}$ solar mass yr$^{-1}$. Finally, we present the imprint of radio dark clouds at 44 GHz, representing a reservoir of molecular gas that feeds star formation activity close to Sgr A*.

Generalizations related to hypothesis testing with the Posterior distribution of the Likelihood Ratio

The Posterior distribution of the Likelihood Ratio (PLR) is proposed by Dempster in 1974 for significance testing in the simple vs composite hypotheses case. In this hypotheses test case, classical frequentist and Bayesian hypotheses tests are irreconcilable, as emphasized by Lindley's paradox, Berger & Selke in 1987 and many others. However, Dempster shows that the PLR (with inner threshold 1) is equal to the frequentist p-value in the simple Gaussian case. In 1997, Aitkin extends this result by adding a nuisance parameter and showing its asymptotic validity under more general distributions. Here we extend the reconciliation between the PLR and a frequentist p-value for a finite sample, through a framework analogous to the Stein's theorem frame in which a credible (Bayesian) domain is equal to a confidence (frequentist) domain. This general reconciliation result only concerns simple vs composite hypotheses testing. The measures proposed by Aitkin in 2010 and Evans in 1997 have interesting properties and extend Dempster's PLR but only by adding a nuisance parameter. Here we propose two extensions of the PLR concept to the general composite vs composite hypotheses test. The first extension can be defined for improper priors as soon as the posterior is proper. The second extension appears from a new Bayesian-type Neyman-Pearson lemma and emphasizes, from a Bayesian perspective, the role of the LR as a discrepancy variable for hypothesis testing.

Posterior probability of the Likelihood Ratio and (Fractional) Bayes Factor: new theoretical relations and practical uses

In the simple vs composite hypothesis test with a proper prior, the Bayes Factor (BF) is shown to be the posterior mean of the Likelihood Ratio (LR). Therefore, the posterior standard deviation of the LR or rather its posterior cumulative density function can be used to indicate the significativity of a detection by the BF and this detection procedure can be computed from a single Markov Chain. It is applied and compared for exoplanet detection. The previous statistics can be expressed from the Fractional BF (FBF) \cite{ohagan95} and the Probability distribution of the LR (PLR) \cite{aitkin97}. Two properties of the PLR related to the GLRT are noted and a procedure to optimize the PLR and the FBF two-parameters detectors according to their ROC curves is proposed. The performances of all tests are compared.

GRB 071003: Broadband Follow-up Observations of a Very Bright Gamma-Ray Burst in a Galactic Halo

The optical afterglow of long-duration GRB 071003 is among the brightest yet to be detected from any GRB, with R ~ 12 mag in KAIT observations starting 42 s after the GRB trigger, including filtered detections during prompt emission. However, our high S/N ratio afterglow spectrum displays only extremely weak absorption lines at what we argue is the host redshift of z = 1.60435 - in contrast to the three other, much stronger Mg II absorption systems observed at lower redshifts. Together with Keck adaptive optics observations which fail to reveal a host galaxy coincident with the burst position, our observations suggest a halo progenitor and offer a cautionary tale about the use of Mg II for GRB redshift determination. We present early through late-time observations spanning the electromagnetic spectrum, constrain the connection between the prompt emission and early variations in the light curve (we observe no correlation), and discuss possible origins for an unusual, marked rebrightening that occurs a few hours after the burst: likely either a late-time refreshed shock or a wide-angle secondary jet. Analysis of the late-time afterglow is most consistent with a wind environment, suggesting a massive star progenitor. Together with GRB 070125, this may indicate that a small but significant portion of star formation in the early universe occurred far outside what we consider a normal galactic disk.

Symplectic conifold transitions

We introduce a symplectic surgery in six dimensions which collapses Lagrangian three-spheres and replaces them by symplectic two-spheres. Under mirror symmetry it corresponds to an operation on complex 3-folds studied by Clemens, Friedman and Tian. We describe several examples which show that there are either many more Calabi-Yau manifolds (e.g. rigid ones) than previously thought or there exist ``symplectic Calabi-Yaus'' -- non-Kaehler symplectic 6-folds with c_1=0. The analogous surgery in four dimensions, with a generalisation to ADE-trees of Lagrangians, implies that the canonical class of a minimal complex surface contains symplectic forms if and only if it has positive square.

Symplectic surgeries from singularities

We describe a variety of symplectic surgeries (not a priori compatible with Kahler structures) which are obtained by combining local Kahler degenerations and resolutions of singularities. The effect of the surgeries is to replace configurations of Lagrangian spheres with symplectic submanifolds. We discuss several examples in detail, relating them to existence questions for symplectic manifolds with $c_1>0, c_1=0, c_1<0$ in four and six dimensions.

ASCA Observation of the quiescent X-ray counterpart to SGR1627-41

We present a 2 - 10 keV ASCA observation of the field around the soft gamma repeater SGR1627-41. A quiescent X-ray source was detected in this observation whose position was consistent both with that of a recently discovered BeppoSAX X-ray source and with the Interplanetary Network localization for this SGR. In 2 - 10 keV X-rays, the spectrum of the X-ray source may be fit equally well by a power law, blackbody, or bremsstrahlung function, with unabsorbed flux ~5 x 10^-12 erg cm^-2 s^-1. We do not confirm a continuation of a fading trend in the flux, and we find no evidence for periodicity, both noted in the earlier BeppoSAXobservations.

Symplectic Lefschetz fibrations with arbitrary fundamental groups

In this paper we give an explicit construction of a symplectic Lefschetz fibration whose total space is a smooth compact four dimensional manifold with a prescribed fundamental group. We also study the numerical properties of the sections in symplectic Lefschetz fibrations and their relation to the structure of the monodromy group.

ASCA Discovery of an X-ray Pulsar in the Error Box of SGR1900+14

We present a 2 - 10 keV ASCA observation of the field around the soft gamma repeater SGR1900+14. One quiescent X-ray source was detected in this observation, and it was in the SGR error box. In 2 - 10 keV X-rays, its spectrum may be fit by a power law with index -2.2, and its unabsorbed flux is 9.6 x 10^-12 erg cm^-2 s^-1. We also find a clear 5.16 s period. The properties of the three well-studied soft gamma repeaters are remarkably similar to one another, and provide evidence that all of them are associated with young, strongly magnetized neutron stars in supernova remnants.
