Classical Bounded and Almost Periodic Solutions to Quasilinear First-Order Hyperbolic Systems in a Strip

We consider boundary value problems for quasilinear first-order one-dimensional hyperbolic systems in a strip. The boundary conditions are supposed to be of a smoothing type, in the sense that the $L^2$-generalized solutions to the initial-boundary value problems become eventually $C^2$-smooth for any initial $L^2$-data. We investigate small global classical solutions and obtain the existence and uniqueness result under the condition that the evolution family generated by the linearized problem has exponential dichotomy on R. We prove that the dichotomy survives under small perturbations in the leading coefficients of the hyperbolic system. Assuming that the coefficients of the hyperbolic system are almost periodic, we prove that the bounded solution is almost periodic also.

Exponential stability of solutions to perturbed superstable wave equations

The paper deals with initial-boundary value problems for the linear wave equation whose solutions stabilize to zero in a finite time. We prove that problems in this class remain exponentially stable in $L^2$ as well as in $C^2$ under small bounded perturbations of the wave operator. To show this for $C^2$, we prove a smoothing result implying that the solutions to the perturbed problems become eventually $C^2$-smooth for any $H^1\times L^2$-initial data.

Bounded Solutions to Boundary Value Hyperbolic Problems

We investigate linear boundary value problems for first-order one-dimensional hyperbolic systems in a strip. We establish conditions for existence and uniqueness of bounded continuous solutions. For that we suppose that the non-diagonal part of the zero-order coefficients vanish at infinity. Moreover, we establish a dissipativity condition in terms of the boundary data and the diagonal part of the zero-order coefficients.

Exponential Dichotomy for Hyperbolic Systems with Periodic Boundary Conditions

We investigate evolution families generated by general linear first-order hyperbolic systems in one space dimension with periodic boundary conditions. We state explicit conditions on the coefficient functions that are sufficient for the existence of exponential dichotomies on $\R$ in the space of continuous periodic functions.

Perturbations of superstable linear hyperbolic systems

The paper deals with initial-boundary value problems for linear non-autonomous first order hyperbolic systems whose solutions stabilize to zero in a finite time. We prove that problems in this class remain exponentially stable in $L^2$ as well as in $C^1$ under small bounded perturbations. To show this for $C^1$, we prove a general smoothing result implying that the solutions to the perturbed problems become eventually $C^1$-smooth for any $L^2$-initial data.

Fredholm Solvability of Time-Periodic Boundary Value Hyperbolic Problems

We investigate a large class of linear boundary value problems for the general first-order one-dimensional hyperbolic systems in the strip $[0,1]\times\R$. We state rather broad natural conditions on the data under which the operators of the problems satisfy the Fredholm alternative in the spaces of continuous and time-periodic functions. A crucial ingredient of our analysis is a non-resonance condition, which is formulated in terms of the data responsible for the bijective part of the Fredholm operator. In the case of $2\times 2$ systems with reflection boundary conditions, we provide a criterium for the non-resonant behavior of the system.

Fredholm Property of Nonlocal Problems for Integro-Differential Hyperbolic Systems

The paper concerns nonlocal time-periodic boundary value problems for first-order Volterra integro-differential hyperbolic systems with boundary inputs. The systems are subjected to integral boundary conditions. Under natural regularity assumptions on the data it is shown that the problems display completely non-resonant behaviour and satisfy the Fredholm alternative in the spaces of continuous and time-periodic functions.

Robustness of Exponential Dichotomies of Boundary-Value Problems for General First-Order Hyperbolic Systems

We examine robustness of exponential dichotomies of boundary value problems for general linear first-order one-dimensional hyperbolic systems. The boundary conditions are supposed to be of types ensuring smoothing solutions in finite time, which includes reflection boundary conditions. We show that the dichotomy survives in the space of continuous functions under small perturbations of all coefficients in the differential equations.

Periodic Solutions to Dissipative Hyperbolic Systems. II: Hopf Bifurcation for Semilinear Problems

We consider boundary value problems for semilinear hyperbolic systems of the type $$ \partial_tu_j + a_j(x,\la)\partial_xu_j + b_j(x,\la,u) = 0, \; x\in(0,1), \;j=1,\dots,n $$ with smooth coefficient functions $a_j$ and $b_j$ such that $b_j(x,\la,0) = 0$ for all $x \in [0,1]$, $\la \in \R$, and $j=1,\ldots,n$. We state conditions for Hopf bifurcation, i.e., for existence, local uniqueness (up to phase shifts), smoothness and smooth dependence on $\la$ of time-periodic solutions bifurcating from the zero stationary solution. Furthermore, we derive a formula which determines the bifurcation direction. The proof is done by means of a Liapunov-Schmidt reduction procedure. For this purpose, Fredholm properties of the linearized system and implicit function theorem techniques are used. There are at least two distinguishing features of Hopf bifurcation theorems for hyperbolic PDEs in comparison with those for parabolic PDEs or for ODEs: First, the question if a non-degenerate time-periodic solution depends smoothly on the system parameters is much more delicate. And second, a sufficient amount of dissipativity is needed in the system, and a priori it is not clear how to verify this in terms of the data of the PDEs and of the boundary conditions.

Periodic Solutions to Dissipative Hyperbolic Systems. I: Fredholm Solvability of Linear Problems

This paper concerns linear first-order hyperbolic systems in one space dimension of the type $$ \partial_tu_j + a_j(x,t)\partial_xu_j + \sum\limits_{k=1}^nb_{jk}(x,t)u_k = f_j(x,t),\; x \in (0,1),\; j=1,\ldots,n, $$ with periodicity conditions in time and reflection boundary conditions in space. We state a non-resonance condition (depending on the coefficients $a_j$ and $b_{jj}$ and the boundary reflection coefficients), which implies Fredholm solvability of the problem in the space of continuous functions. Further, we state one more non-resonance condition (depending also on $\partial_ta_j$), which implies $C^1$-solution regularity. Moreover, we give examples showing that both non-resonance conditions cannot be dropped, in general. Those conditions are robust under small perturbations of the problem data. Our results work for many non-strictly hyperbolic systems, but they are new even in the case of strict hyperbolicity.
