Performance Analysis of FAS-Aided NOMA-ISAC: A Backscattering Scenario

This paper investigates a two-user downlink system for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) in which the two users deploy a fluid antenna system (FAS) and adopt the nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) strategy. Specifically, the integrated sensing and backscatter communication (ISABC) model is considered, where a dual-functional base station (BS) serves to communicate the two users and sense a tag's surrounding. In contrast to conventional ISAC, the backscattering tag reflects the signals transmitted by the BS to the NOMA users and enhances their communication performance. Furthermore, the BS extracts environmental information from the same backscatter signal in the sensing stage. Firstly, we derive closed-form expressions for both the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and probability density function (PDF) of the equivalent channel at the users utilizing the moment matching method and the Gaussian copula. Then in the communication stage, we obtain closed-form expressions for both the outage probability and for the corresponding asymptotic expressions in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Moreover, using numerical integration techniques such as the Gauss-Laguerre quadrature (GLQ), we have series-form expressions for the user ergodic communication rates (ECRs). In addition, we get a closed-form expression for the ergodic sensing rate (ESR) using the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB). Finally, the accuracy of our analytical results is validated numerically, and we confirm the superiority of employing FAS over traditional fixed-position antenna systems in both ISAC and ISABC.

Extreme Learning Machine-based Channel Estimation in IRS-Assisted Multi-User ISAC System

Multi-user integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) assisted by intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been recently investigated to provide a high spectral and energy efficiency transmission. This paper proposes a practical channel estimation approach for the first time to an IRS-assisted multiuser ISAC system. The estimation problem in such a system is challenging since the sensing and communication (SAC) signals interfere with each other, and the passive IRS lacks signal processing ability. A two-stage approach is proposed to transfer the overall estimation problem into sub-ones, successively including the direct and reflected channels estimation. Based on this scheme, the ISAC base station (BS) estimates all the SAC channels associated with the target and uplink users, while each downlink user estimates the downlink communication channels individually. Considering a low-cost demand of the ISAC BS and downlink users, the proposed two-stage approach is realized by an efficient neural network (NN) framework that contains two different extreme learning machine (ELM) structures to estimate the above SAC channels. Moreover, two types of input-output pairs to train the ELMs are carefully devised, which impact the estimation accuracy and computational complexity under different system parameters. Simulation results reveal a substantial performance improvement achieved by the proposed ELM-based approach over the least-squares and NN-based benchmarks, with reduced training complexity and faster training speed.

Liquid Crystal-Based RIS for VLC Transmitters: Performance Analysis, Challenges, and Opportunities

This article presents a novel approach of using reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in the transmitter of indoor visible light communication (VLC) systems to enhance data rate uniformity and maintain adequate illumination. In this approach, a liquid crystal (LC)-based RIS is placed in front of the LED arrays of the transmitter to form an LC-based RIS-enabled VLC transmitter. This RIS-enabled transmitter is able to perform new functions such as transmit light steering and amplification and demonstrates very high data rate and illumination performance when compared with traditional VLC transmitters with circular and distributed LED arrays and the more recent angle diversity transmitter. Simulation results reveal the strong potential of LC-based RIS-aided transmitters in satisfying the joint illumination and communication needs of indoor VLC systems and positions VLC as a critical essential block for next generation communication networks. Several challenging and exciting issues related to the realization of such transmitters are discussed.

Segment Anything Meets Semantic Communication

In light of the diminishing returns of traditional methods for enhancing transmission rates, the domain of semantic communication presents promising new frontiers. Focusing on image transmission, this paper explores the application of foundation models, particularly the Segment Anything Model (SAM) developed by Meta AI Research, to improve semantic communication. SAM is a promptable image segmentation model that has gained attention for its ability to perform zero-shot segmentation tasks without explicit training or domain-specific knowledge. By employing SAM's segmentation capability and lightweight neural network architecture for semantic coding, we propose a practical approach to semantic communication. We demonstrate that this approach retains critical semantic features, achieving higher image reconstruction quality and reducing communication overhead. This practical solution eliminates the resource-intensive stage of training a segmentation model and can be applied to any semantic coding architecture, paving the way for real-world applications.

Understanding Segment Anything Model: SAM is Biased Towards Texture Rather than Shape

In contrast to the human vision that mainly depends on the shape for recognizing the objects, deep image recognition models are widely known to be biased toward texture. Recently, Meta research team has released the first foundation model for image segmentation, termed segment anything model (SAM), which has attracted significant attention. In this work, we understand SAM from the perspective of texture \textit{v.s.} shape. Different from label-oriented recognition tasks, the SAM is trained to predict a mask for covering the object shape based on a promt. With this said, it seems self-evident that the SAM is biased towards shape. In this work, however, we reveal an interesting finding: the SAM is strongly biased towards texture-like dense features rather than shape. This intriguing finding is supported by a novel setup where we disentangle texture and shape cues and design texture-shape cue conflict for mask prediction.

Matrix-Completion Quantum State Tomography

The deployment of intermediate- and large-scale quantum devices necessitates the development of efficient full state tomographical techniques for quantum benchmarks. Here, we introduce a matrix filling-based method for tomography of pure quantum states, called the matrix-completion quantum state tomography. This method requires only 2n + 1 local Pauli operators and minimal post-processing for n-qubit states. Numerical results show that our method is highly efficient on superconducting real quantum devices and achieves better fidelity estimates of multiqubit quantum states as compared to contemporary pure state tomography methods. These desirable features of the matrix-completion quantum state tomography protocol make it suitable for the benchmarking of intermediate- and large-scale quantum devices dealing mainly with pure quantum states.

Error-mitigated photonic variational quantum eigensolver using a single-photon ququart

We report the experimental resource-efficient implementation of the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) using four-dimensional photonic quantum states of single-photons. The four-dimensional quantum states are implemented by utilizing polarization and path degrees of freedom of a single-photon. Our photonic VQE is equipped with the quantum error mitigation (QEM) protocol that efficiently reduces the effects of Pauli noise in the quantum processing unit. We apply our photonic VQE to estimate the ground state energy of He--H$^{+}$ cation. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that our resource-efficient photonic VQE can accurately estimate the bond dissociation curve, even in the presence of large noise in the quantum processing unit.

Counterfactual Full-Duplex Communication

This paper proposes two new full-duplex quantum communication protocols to exchange classical or quantum information between two remote parties simultaneously without transferring a physical particle over the quantum channel. The first protocol, called quantum duplex coding, enables to exchange of a classical bit using a preshared maximally entangled pair of qubits by means of counterfactual disentanglement. The second protocol, called quantum telexchanging, enables to exchange an arbitrary unknown qubit without using preshared entanglement by means of counterfactual entanglement and disentanglement. We demonstrate the quantum duplex coding and quantum telexchanging by exploiting counterfactual electron-photon interaction gates and show that these quantum duplex communication protocols form full-duplex binary erasure channel and quantum erasure channels, respectively.

Adaptive quantum state tomography with iterative particle filtering

Several Bayesian estimation based heuristics have been developed to perform quantum state tomography (QST). Their ability to quantify uncertainties using region estimators and include a priori knowledge of the experimentalists makes this family of methods an attractive choice for QST. However, specialized techniques for pure states do not work well for mixed states and vice versa. In this paper, we present an adaptive particle filter (PF) based QST protocol which improves the scaling of fidelity compared to nonadaptive Bayesian schemes for arbitrary multi-qubit states. This is due to the protocol's unabating perseverance to find the states's diagonal bases and more systematic handling of enduring problems in popular PF methods relating to the subjectivity of informative priors and the invalidity of particles produced by resamplers. Numerical examples and implementation on IBM quantum devices demonstrate improved performance for arbitrary quantum states and the application readiness of our proposed scheme.

Entanglement-Free Parameter Estimation of Generalized Pauli Channels

We propose a parameter estimation protocol for generalized Pauli channels acting on $d$-dimensional Hilbert space. The salient features of the proposed method include product probe states and measurements, the number of measurement configurations linear in $d$, minimal post-processing, and the scaling of the mean square error comparable to that of the entanglement-based parameter estimation scheme for generalized Pauli channels. We also show that while measuring generalized Pauli operators the errors caused by the Pauli noise can be modeled as measurement errors. This makes it possible to utilize the measurement error mitigation framework to mitigate the errors caused by the generalized Pauli channels. We use this result to mitigate noise on the probe states and recover the scaling of the noiseless probes, except with a noise strength-dependent constant factor. This method of modeling Pauli channel as measurement noise can also be of independent interest in other NISQ tasks, e.g., state tomography problems, variational quantum algorithms, and other channel estimation problems where Pauli measurements have the central role.

Self-Guided Quantum State Learning for Mixed States

We provide an adaptive learning algorithm for tomography of general quantum states. Our proposal is based on the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation algorithm and is applicable on mixed qudit states. The salient features of our algorithm are efficient ($O \left( d^3 \right)$) post-processing in the dimension $d$ of the state, robustness against measurement and channel noise, and improved infidelity performance as compared to the contemporary adaptive state learning algorithms. A higher resilience against measurement noise makes our algorithm suitable for noisy intermediate-scale quantum applications.

Counterfactual Concealed Telecomputation

Distributed computing is a fastest growing field -- enabling virtual computing, parallel computing, and distributed storage. By exploiting the counterfactual techniques, we devise a distributed blind quantum computation protocol to perform a universal two-qubit controlled unitary operation for any input state without using preshared entanglement and without exchanging physical particles between remote parties. This distributed protocol allows Bob to counterfactully apply an arbitrary unitary operator to Alice's qubit in probabilistic fashion, without revealing the operator to her, using a control qubit -- called the counterfactual concealed telecomputation (CCT). It is shown that the protocol is valid for general input states and that single-qubit unitary teleportation is a special case of CCT. The quantum circuit for CCT can be implemented using the (chained) quantum Zeno gates and the protocol becomes deterministic with simplified circuit implementation if the initial composite state of Alice and Bob is a Bell-type state.

Information Carrier and Resource Optimization of Counterfactual Quantum Communication

Counterfactual quantum communication is unique in its own way that allows remote parties to transfer information without sending any message carrier in the channel. Although no message carrier travels in the channel at the time of successful information transmission, it is impossible to transmit information faster than the speed of light, thus without an information carrier. In this paper, we address an important question What carries the information in counterfactual quantum communication? and optimize the resource efficiency of the counterfactual quantum communication in terms of the number of channels used, time consumed to transmit 1-bit classical information between two remote parties, and the number of qubits required to accomplish the counterfactual quantum communication.

Quantum Anonymity for Quantum Networks

We present the first quantum anonymous notification (QAN) protocol that introduces anonymity and paves the way for anonymous secure quantum communication in quantum networks. QAN protocol has applications ranging from multiparty quantum computation to quantum internet. We utilize the QAN protocol to propose an anonymous quantum private comparison protocol in an $n$-node quantum network. This protocol can compare private information of any $2 \leq k \leq n$ parties with the help of the remaining $n-k$ parties and a semi-honest third party. These protocols feature a traceless property, i.e., encoding operations cannot be traced back to their originating sources. Security analysis shows that this protocol is robust against external adversaries and malicious participants.

Holevo Capacity of Discrete Weyl Channels

Holevo capacity is the maximum rate at which a quantum channel can reliably transmit classical information without entanglement. However, calculating the Holevo capacity of arbitrary quantum channels is a nontrivial and computationally expensive task since it requires the numerical optimization over all possible input quantum states. In this paper, we consider discrete Weyl channels (DWCs) and exploit their symmetry properties to model DWC as a classical symmetric channel. We characterize lower and upper bounds on the Holevo capacity of DWCs using simple computational formulae. Then, we provide a sufficient and necessary condition where the upper and lower bounds coincide. The framework in this paper enables us to characterize the exact Holevo capacity for most of the known special cases of DWCs.

Online Resource Procurement and Allocation in a Hybrid Edge-Cloud Computing System

By acquiring cloud-like capacities at the edge of a network, edge computing is expected to significantly improve user experience. In this paper, we formulate a hybrid edge-cloud computing system where an edge device with limited local resources can rent more from a cloud node and perform resource allocation to serve its users. The resource procurement and allocation decisions depend not only on the cloud's multiple rental options but also on the edge's local processing cost and capacity. We first propose an offline algorithm whose decisions are made with full information of future demand. Then, an online algorithm is proposed where the edge node makes irrevocable decisions in each timeslot without future information of demand. We show that both algorithms have constant performance bounds from the offline optimum. Numerical results acquired with Google cluster-usage traces indicate that the cost of the edge node can be substantially reduced by using the proposed algorithms, up to $80\%$ in comparison with baseline algorithms. We also observe how the cloud's pricing structure and edge's local cost influence the procurement decisions.

Molecular Communication with Anomalous Diffusion in Stochastic Nanonetworks

Molecular communication in nature can incorporate a large number of nano-things in nanonetworks as well as demonstrate how nano-things communicate. This paper presents molecular communication where transmit nanomachines deliver information molecules to a receive nanomachine over an anomalous diffusion channel. By considering a random molecule concentration in a space-time fractional diffusion channel, an analytical expression is derived for the first passage time (FPT) of the molecules. Then, the bit error rate of the lth nearest molecular communication with timing binary modulation is derived in terms of Fox's H-function. In the presence of interfering molecules, the mean and variance of the number of the arrived interfering molecules in a given time interval are presented. Using these statistics, a simple mitigation scheme for timing modulation is provided. The results in this paper provide the network performance on the error probability by averaging over a set of random distances between the communicating links as well as a set of random FPTs caused by the anomalous diffusion of molecules. This result will help in designing and developing molecular communication systems for various design purposes.
