Critical behavior and Joule-Thomson expansion of charged AdS black holes surrounded by exotic fluid with modified Chaplygin equation of state

By considering the concept of a unified single fluid model, referred to as the modified Chaplygin gas (MCG), which amalgamates dark energy and dark matter. In this study, we explore the thermodynamic characteristics of charged anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes existing in an unconventional fluid accompanied by MCG. To accomplish this objective, we derive the equations of state by regarding the charge $Q^{2}$ as a thermodynamic variable. The impact of MCG parameters on the critical thermodynamic quantities ($ψ_{c}$, $T_{c}$, $Q_{c}^{2}$) are examined, followed by a detailed analysis of the $Q^{2}-ψ$ diagram. To provide a clearer explanation of the phase transition, we present an analysis of the Gibbs free energy. It is important to note that if the Hawking temperature exceeds the critical temperature, there is a distinct pattern observed known as swallowtail behavior. This indicates that the system undergoes a first-order phase transition from a smaller black hole to a larger one. The critical exponent of the system is found to be in complete agreement with that of the van der Waals fluid system. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of MCG parameters and black hole charge on the Joule-Thomson (J-T) expansion in the extended phase space. The J-T coefficient is examined to pinpoint the exact region experiencing cooling or heating, the observation reveals that the presence of negative heat capacity results in the occurrence of a cooling process. In addition, it is worth noting that the certain parameters exert a significant influence on the ratio $\frac{T_{min}}{T_{c}}$. The parameters $γ$ and $β$ have a non-negligible effect on the isenthalpy curve.

Liouville-type theorems, radial symmetry and integral representation of solutions to Hardy-Hénon equations involving higher order fractional Laplacians

We study nonnegative solutions to the following Hardy-Hénon type equations involving higher order fractional Laplacians $$ (-Δ)^σu = |x|^{-α}u^{p} ~~~~~~ \mbox{in} ~ \mathbb{R}^n \backslash \{0\} $$ with a possible singularity at the origin, where $σ$ is a real number satisfying $0 < σ< n/2$, $-\infty < α< 2σ$ and $p>1$. By a more direct approach without using the super poly-harmonic properties, we establish an integral representation for nonnegative solutions to the above higher order fractional equations whether the singularity $\{0\}$ is removable or not. As the first application, we prove an optimal Liouville-type theorem for the above equations with removable singularity for all $σ\in (0, n/2)$ when $$ 1 < p < p_{σ,α}^*:=\frac{n+2σ-2α}{n-2σ} ~~~ \mbox{and} ~~~ -\infty < α< 2σ. $$ This, in particular, covers a gap occurring for non-integral $σ\in (1, n/2)$ and $α\in (0, 2σ)$ in the current literature. As the second application, we show the radial symmetry of solutions in the critical case or in the case when the origin is a non-removable singularity. Such radial symmetry would be useful in studying the singular Yamabe-type problems.

Asymptotic expansions for conformal scalar curvature equations near isolated singularities

In this paper, we study asymptotic expansions of positive solutions of the conformal scalar curvature equation $$ - Δu = K(x) u^\frac{n + 2}{n - 2} ~~~~~~ \textmd{in} ~ B_1 \setminus \{ 0 \} $$ with an isolated singularity at the origin. Under certain flatness conditions on $K$, we establish a higher-order expansion of solutions near the origin. In particular, we give the refined second-order asymptotic expansion of solutions when $n \geq 6$. Moreover, we also obtain an arbitrary-order expansion of singular positive solutions of the anisotropic elliptic equation $$ - \,{\rm div} (|x|^{- 2 a} \nabla u) = |x|^{- b p} u^{p - 1} ~~~~~~ \textmd{in} ~ B_1 \setminus \{ 0 \}, $$ where $0 \leq a < \frac{n - 2}{2}$, $a \leq b < a + 1$ and $p = \frac{2 n}{n - 2 + 2 (b - a)}$. This equation is arising from the celebrated Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality.

Strong pairing from small Fermi surface beyond weak coupling: Application to La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

The studies of high-temperature superconductors raise a fundamental question: Can a small Fermi surface phase, which violates the Luttinger theorem, exist and give rise to superconductivity? Our work provides a positive answer through a controlled theory based on a bilayer model with strong inter-layer spin-spin coupling ($J_\perp$) but no inter-layer hopping ($t_\perp$). Then small hole doping of the rung-singlet insulator with two electrons per rung naturally leads to small hole pockets with Fermi surface volume per flavor smaller than the free fermion result by $1/2$ of the Brillouin zone(BZ). We construct a new t-J model on a bilayer square lattice, so called ESD t-J model and employ a generalized slave boson theory, which captures this small Fermi surface phase at small hole doping $x$. This metallic state is an intrinsically strongly correlated Fermi liquid beyond weak coupling theory, violating the perturbative Luttinger theorem but consistent with the Oshikawa's non-perturbative proof. We further show that it transitions into an inter-layer paired $s'$-wave superconductor at lower temperature through Feshbach resonance with a virtual Cooper pair, with a surprising doping-induced crossover from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) at higher hole doping levels. This leads to a superconducting dome centered around $x=0.5$, with the normal state changing from the conventional Fermi liquid in the $x>0.5$ to the unusual small Fermi surface state in the $x<0.5$ side. Our theoretical findings including phase diagrams are also confirmed by density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulation in quasi one dimension. Applying our theoretical framework, we provide a plausible scenario for the recently found nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ materials.

On-chip light-scattering enhancement enables high performance single-particle tracking under conventional bright-field microscope

Scattering-based single-particle tracking (S-SPT) has opened new avenues for highly sensitive label-free detection and characterization of nanoscopic objects, making it particularly attractive for various analytical applications. However, a long-standing issue hindering its widespread applicability is its high technical demands on optical systems. The most promising solution entails implementing on-chip light-scattering enhancement, but the existing field-enhancement technology fails as their highly localized field is insufficient to cover the three-dimensional trajectory of particles within the interrogation time. Here, we present a straightforward and robust on-chip microlens-based strategy for light-scattering enhancement, providing an enhancement range ten times greater than that of near-field optical techniques. These properties are attributed to the increased long-range optical fields and complex composite interactions between two closely spaced structures. Thanks to this strategy, we demonstrate that high-performance S-SPT can be achieved, for the first time, under a conventional bright-field microscope with illumination powers over 1,000 times lower than typically required. This significantly reduces the technical demands of S-SPT, representing a significant step forward in facilitating its practical application in biophotonics, biosensors, diagnostics, and other fields.

Dataset of Classified Chandra Sources in Globular Clusters

We present a collection of classified X-ray sources in Globular Clusters (GCs) observed by the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO), including active binaries, cataclysmic variables, millisecond pulsars, and low-mass X-ray binaries. We cross-match the most accurate published positions from multiwavelength observations of these sources to the Chandra Source Catalog (CSC) Release 2.1, and the HST UV Globular Cluster Survey (HUGS) to extract their multiwavelength properties. The dataset can be accessed via an interactive website and used as a training dataset for machine-learning classification of unidentified X-ray sources in GCs.

MetaF2N: Blind Image Super-Resolution by Learning Efficient Model Adaptation from Faces

Due to their highly structured characteristics, faces are easier to recover than natural scenes for blind image super-resolution. Therefore, we can extract the degradation representation of an image from the low-quality and recovered face pairs. Using the degradation representation, realistic low-quality images can then be synthesized to fine-tune the super-resolution model for the real-world low-quality image. However, such a procedure is time-consuming and laborious, and the gaps between recovered faces and the ground-truths further increase the optimization uncertainty. To facilitate efficient model adaptation towards image-specific degradations, we propose a method dubbed MetaF2N, which leverages the contained Faces to fine-tune model parameters for adapting to the whole Natural image in a Meta-learning framework. The degradation extraction and low-quality image synthesis steps are thus circumvented in our MetaF2N, and it requires only one fine-tuning step to get decent performance. Considering the gaps between the recovered faces and ground-truths, we further deploy a MaskNet for adaptively predicting loss weights at different positions to reduce the impact of low-confidence areas. To evaluate our proposed MetaF2N, we have collected a real-world low-quality dataset with one or multiple faces in each image, and our MetaF2N achieves superior performance on both synthetic and real-world datasets. Source code, pre-trained models, and collected datasets are available at https://github.com/yinzhicun/MetaF2N.

Topology of nonlinearly charged black hole chemistry via massive gravity

The classification of critical points of charged topological black holes (TBHs) in anti-de Sitter spacetime (AdS) under the Power Maxwell Invariant (PMI)-massive gravity is accomplished within the framework of black hole chemistry (BHC). Considering the grand canonical ensemble (GCE), we show that $d=4$ black hole have only one topological class, whereas $d\ge 5$ black holes belong to two different topology classes. Furthermore, the conventional critical point characterized by negative topological charge coincides with the maximum extreme point of temperature; and the novel critical point featuring opposite topological charge corresponds to the minimum extreme point of temperature. With increasing pressure, new phases emerge at the novel critical point while disappear from the conventional one. Moreover, a atypical van der Waals (vdW) behavior is found in $d\ge 6$ dimensions, and the anomaly disappears at the traditional critical point. In the limit of nonlinearity parameter $s\to1$, different topology classes are only obtained in the GCE and they may not exist within the canonical ensemble. With the absence of electric potential $Φ$, the neutral TBHs share the same topological classification results as the charged TBHs in the GCE of Maxwell-massive gravity.

Octopus: A Heterogeneous In-network Computing Accelerator Enabling Deep Learning for network

Deep learning (DL) for network models have achieved excellent performance in the field and are becoming a promising component in future intelligent network system. Programmable in-network computing device has great potential to deploy DL for network models, however, existing device cannot afford to run a DL model. The main challenges of data-plane supporting DL-based network models lie in computing power, task granularity, model generality and feature extracting. To address above problems, we propose Octopus: a heterogeneous in-network computing accelerator enabling DL for network models. A feature extractor is designed for fast and efficient feature extracting. Vector accelerator and systolic array work in a heterogeneous collaborative way, offering low-latency-highthroughput general computing ability for packet-and-flow-based tasks. Octopus also contains on-chip memory fabric for storage and connecting, and Risc-V core for global controlling. The proposed Octopus accelerator design is implemented on FPGA. Functionality and performance of Octopus are validated in several use-cases, achieving performance of 31Mpkt/s feature extracting, 207ns packet-based computing latency, and 90kflow/s flow-based computing throughput.

Classifying Unidentified X-ray Sources in the Chandra Source Catalog Using a Multiwavelength Machine-learning Approach

The rapid increase in serendipitous X-ray source detections requires the development of novel approaches to efficiently explore the nature of X-ray sources. If even a fraction of these sources could be reliably classified, it would enable population studies for various astrophysical source types on a much larger scale than currently possible. Classification of large numbers of sources from multiple classes characterized by multiple properties (features) must be done automatically and supervised machine learning (ML) seems to provide the only feasible approach. We perform classification of Chandra Source Catalog version 2.0 (CSCv2) sources to explore the potential of the ML approach and identify various biases, limitations, and bottlenecks that present themselves in these kinds of studies. We establish the framework and present a flexible and expandable Python pipeline, which can be used and improved by others. We also release the training data set of 2941 X-ray sources with confidently established classes. In addition to providing probabilistic classifications of 66,369 CSCv2 sources (21% of the entire CSCv2 catalog), we perform several narrower-focused case studies (high-mass X-ray binary candidates and X-ray sources within the extent of the H.E.S.S. TeV sources) to demonstrate some possible applications of our ML approach. We also discuss future possible modifications of the presented pipeline, which are expected to lead to substantial improvements in classification confidences.

Auto-GPT for Online Decision Making: Benchmarks and Additional Opinions

Auto-GPT is an autonomous agent that leverages recent advancements in adapting Large Language Models (LLMs) for decision-making tasks. While there has been a growing interest in Auto-GPT stypled agents, questions remain regarding the effectiveness and flexibility of Auto-GPT in solving real-world decision-making tasks. Its limited capability for real-world engagement and the absence of benchmarks contribute to these uncertainties. In this paper, we present a comprehensive benchmark study of Auto-GPT styled agents in decision-making tasks that simulate real-world scenarios. Our aim is to gain deeper insights into this problem and understand the adaptability of GPT-based agents. We compare the performance of popular LLMs such as GPT-4, GPT-3.5, Claude, and Vicuna in Auto-GPT styled decision-making tasks. Furthermore, we introduce the Additional Opinions algorithm, an easy and effective method that incorporates supervised/imitation-based learners into the Auto-GPT scheme. This approach enables lightweight supervised learning without requiring fine-tuning of the foundational LLMs. We demonstrate through careful baseline comparisons and ablation studies that the Additional Opinions algorithm significantly enhances performance in online decision-making benchmarks, including WebShop and ALFWorld.

Efficient Computation of General Modules for ALC Ontologies (Extended Version)

We present a method for extracting general modules for ontologies formulated in the description logic ALC. A module for an ontology is an ideally substantially smaller ontology that preserves all entailments for a user-specified set of terms. As such, it has applications such as ontology reuse and ontology analysis. Different from classical modules, general modules may use axioms not explicitly present in the input ontology, which allows for additional conciseness. So far, general modules have only been investigated for lightweight description logics. We present the first work that considers the more expressive description logic ALC. In particular, our contribution is a new method based on uniform interpolation supported by some new theoretical results. Our evaluation indicates that our general modules are often smaller than classical modules and uniform interpolants computed by the state-of-the-art, and compared with uniform interpolants, can be computed in a significantly shorter time. Moreover, our method can be used for, and in fact improves, the computation of uniform interpolants and classical modules.

Exciton and light induced ferromagnetism from doping a moiré Mott insulator

Significant efforts have been dedicated to achieving excitonic insulators. In this paper, we explore a new problem of doping excitons into a Mott insulator instead of a band insulator. Specifically, we start with a Mott insulator on a triangular moiré superlattice in a transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) layer and inject excitons by either transferring particles to a different layer or optically pumping electrons from the valence to the conduction band. In both cases, the excitons move in the presence of local spin moments inherited from the Mott insulator. When the Heisenberg spin coupling $J$ is small, the kinetic energy of the excitons decides the magnetism, akin to Nagaoka ferromagnetism in hole-doped Mott insulators. Through density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, we demonstrate that the spin moments originating from the Mott insulator form $120^\circ$ antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic order for the two signs of the exciton hoppings over a broad range of exciton densities. Notably, the optical pump case may result in an antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition with increasing exciton density, indicating a potential mechanism for light-induced ferromagnetism. A similar exciton-induced ferromagnetism could be achieved in a moiré-monolayer system where the monolayer is electron-doped while the moiré Mott insulator is hole-doped. Our works demonstrates a new possibility to engineering magnetism through doping neutral excitons.

Optical response and nonlinear Hall response of twisted bilayer graphene in the insulating state

In this work, we calculate the optical response and the nonlinear Hall response of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) in the insulating states. Different insulating states, including spin-valley polarized (SPVP) state, spin-polarized quantum Hall(SPQH) state, spin-polarized valley Hall (SPVH) state, and spin polarized Kramers-intervalley coherence (SPKIVC) state, are considered. We calculate the optical conductivity ($σ_{xx}$) of these four states and we find that the spin-valley polarized state shows a two-peak feature which is different from the other three states. In order to distinguish the other three states, we calculate the nonlinear Hall response which is proportional to Berry curvature dipole, and we find the chemical potential dependence of the Berry curvature dipole can distinguish these three states. Our result can be tested in the spectroscopy and transport experiments and may be helpful to determine the nature of insulating state in TBG.

Automatic Detection of Industry Sectors in Legal Articles Using Machine Learning Approaches

The ability to automatically identify industry sector coverage in articles on legal developments, or any kind of news articles for that matter, can bring plentiful of benefits both to the readers and the content creators themselves. By having articles tagged based on industry coverage, readers from all around the world would be able to get to legal news that are specific to their region and professional industry. Simultaneously, writers would benefit from understanding which industries potentially lack coverage or which industries readers are currently mostly interested in and thus, they would focus their writing efforts towards more inclusive and relevant legal news coverage. In this paper, a Machine Learning-powered industry analysis approach which combined Natural Language Processing (NLP) with Statistical and Machine Learning (ML) techniques was investigated. A dataset consisting of over 1,700 annotated legal articles was created for the identification of six industry sectors. Text and legal based features were extracted from the text. Both traditional ML methods (e.g. gradient boosting machine algorithms, and decision-tree based algorithms) and deep neural network (e.g. transformer models) were applied for performance comparison of predictive models. The system achieved promising results with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve scores above 0.90 and F-scores above 0.81 with respect to the six industry sectors. The experimental results show that the suggested automated industry analysis which employs ML techniques allows the processing of large collections of text data in an easy, efficient, and scalable way. Traditional ML methods perform better than deep neural networks when only a small and domain-specific training data is available for the study.

Joule-Thomson expansion of charged dilatonic black holes

Based on the Einstein-Maxwell theory, the Joule-Thomson (J-T) expansion of charged dilatonic black holes (the solutions are neither flat nor AdS) in $(n+1)$-dimensional spacetime is studied herein. To this end, we analyze the effects of the dimension $n$ and dilaton field $α$ on J-T expansion. An explicit expression for the J-T coefficient is derived, and consequently, a negative heat capacity is found to lead to a cooling process. In contrast to its effect on the dimension, the inversion curve decreases with charge $Q$ at low pressures, whereas the opposite effect is observed at high pressures. We can observe that with an increase in the dimension $n$ or parameter $α$, both the pressure cut-off point and the minimum inversion temperature $T_{min}$ change. Moreover, we analyze the ratio $T_{min}/T_{c}$ numerically and discover that the ratio is independent of charge; however, it depends on the dilaton field and dimension: for $n=3$ and $α=0$, the ratio is 1/2. The dilaton field is found to enhance the ratio. In addition, we identify the cooling-heating regions by investigating the inversion and isenthalpic curves, and the behavior of the minimum inversion mass $M_{min}$ indicates that this cooling-heating transition may not occur under certain special conditions.

The radio structure of the $γ$-ray narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy SDSS J211852.96$-$073227.5

The $γ$-ray narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies can be considered to be the third class of $γ$-ray active galactic nuclei possessing relativistic jets. In this paper, we present multi-band high resolution Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) images of the $γ$-ray NLS1, SDSS J211852.96$-$073227.5 (J2118$-$0732, $z=0.26$). We find a core-jet radio morphology and significant flux density variations in the radio core. The high brightness temperature estimated from VLBA images and core variability demonstrate that it exhibits substantial relativistic beaming effects. From considering radio emission in several bands, we find that the source has an inverted spectrum above 1 GHz but a steep spectrum at low frequencies from 74 MHz to 1 GHz; these may arise from the present activity and the old diffuse/extended emission, respectively. The core-jet morphology, significant flux density variations, and beaming effect make J2118$-$0732 resemble a blazar. Considering the low mass of its central black hole and ongoing merger environment, J2118$-$0732 may represent a low-mass, low-power counterpart of blazars, and may finally evolve to a blazar.
