Long-Term Stability Analysis of Power Systems with Wind Power Based on Stochastic Differential Equations: Model Development and Foundations

In this paper, the variable wind power is incorporated into the dynamic model for long-term stability analysis. A theory-based method is proposed for power systems with wind power to conduct long-term stability analysis, which is able to provide accurate stability assessments with fast simulation speed. Particularly, the theoretical foundation for the proposed approximation approach is presented. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are illustrated by several numerical examples.

Stable P-symmetric closed characteristics on partially symmetric compact convex hypersurfaces

In this paper, let $n\geq2$ be an integer, $P=diag(-I_{n-κ},I_κ,-I_{n-κ},I_κ)$ for some integer $κ\in[0, n-1)$, and $Σ\subset {\bf R}^{2n}$ be a partially symmetric compact convex hypersurface, i.e., $x\in Σ$ implies $Px\inΣ$. We prove that if $Σ$ is $(r,R)$-pinched with $\frac{R}{r}<\sqrt{\frac{5}{3}}$, then $Σ$ carries at least two geometrically distinct P-symmetric closed characteristics which possess at least $2n-4κ$ Floquet multipliers on the unit circle of the complex plane.

Wake Potential in Strong Coupling Plasma from AdS/CFT Correspondence

With the dielectric function computed from AdS/CFT correspondence, we studied the wake potential induced by a fast moving charge in strong coupling plasma, and compared it with the weak coupling wake potential for different particle velocities as $v=0.55c$ and $v=0.99c$. The most prominent difference between strong and weak wake potential is that when $v=0.99c$ the remarkable oscillation due to Cerenkov-like radiation and Mach cone in weak coupling disappears in strong coupling, which implies that the plasmon mode with phase velocity lower than the speed of light dose not exist in strong coupling plasma.

On Content-centric Wireless Delivery Networks

The flux of social media and the convenience of mobile connectivity has created a mobile data phenomenon that is expected to overwhelm the mobile cellular networks in the foreseeable future. Despite the advent of 4G/LTE, the growth rate of wireless data has far exceeded the capacity increase of the mobile networks. A fundamentally new design paradigm is required to tackle the ever-growing wireless data challenge. In this article, we investigate the problem of massive content delivery over wireless networks and present a systematic view on content-centric network design and its underlying challenges. Towards this end, we first review some of the recent advancements in Information Centric Networking (ICN) which provides the basis on how media contents can be labeled, distributed, and placed across the networks. We then formulate the content delivery task into a content rate maximization problem over a share wireless channel, which, contrasting the conventional wisdom that attempts to increase the bit-rate of a unicast system, maximizes the content delivery capability with a fixed amount of wireless resources. This conceptually simple change enables us to exploit the "content diversity" and the "network diversity" by leveraging the abundant computation sources (through application-layer encoding, pushing and caching, etc.) within the existing wireless networks. A network architecture that enables wireless network crowdsourcing for content delivery is then described, followed by an exemplary campus wireless network that encompasses the above concepts.

Exploiting the Unexploited of Coded Caching for Wireless Content Distribution: Detailed Theoretical Proofs

Recent studies show that the coded caching technique can facilitate the wireless content distribution by mitigating the wireless traffic rate during the peak-traffic time, where the contents are partially prefetched to the local cache of mobile devices during the off-peak time. The remaining contents are then jointly coded and delivered in multicast, when many content requests are initiated in the peak-traffic time. The requested contents can be recovered from the local-prefetched and multicast data with requesters experiencing less congestions. However, the benefit of the coded caching scheme is still under estimated, where the potential gain by appropriate caching distribution is under exploited. In this paper, we propose a theoretical model to minimize the average wireless traffic rate required in the coded caching, for which the optimized caching distribution is derived with the content popularity distribution taken into account. In order to improve the computational efficiency for determining the appropriate caching distribution, we transform the objective function from the average wireless traffic rate into the average size of un-prefetched contents. We theoretically show the order optimality of the derived results from both the primal model and the relaxed one. Simulation results show that the coded caching performance can be further improved with the derived caching distribution.

The existence of two closed characteristics on every compact star-shaped hypersurface in ${\bf R}^4$

Recently, Cristofaro-Gardiner and Hutchings proved that there exist at least two closed characteristics on every compact star-shaped hypersuface in ${\bf R}^4$. Then Ginzburg, Hein, Hryniewicz, and Macarini gave this result a second proof. In this paper, we give it a third proof by using index iteration theory, resonance identities of closed characteristics and a remarkable theorem of Ginzburg et al.

On the number of P-invariant closed characteristics on partially symmetric compact convex hypersurfaces in ${\bf R}^{2n}$

In this paper, let $n\geq2$ be an integer, $P=diag(-I_{n-κ},I_κ,-I_{n-κ},I_κ)$ for some integer $κ\in[0, n)$, and $Σ\subset {\bf R}^{2n}$ be a partially symmetric compact convex hypersurface, i.e., $x\in Σ$ implies $Px\inΣ$. We prove that if $Σ$ is $(r,R)$-pinched with $\frac{R}{r}<\sqrt{2}$, then there exist at least $n-κ$ geometrically distinct P-symmetric closed characteristics on $Σ$, as a consequence, $Σ$ carry at least $n$ geometrically distinct P-invariant closed characteristics.

Resonance Identities for Closed Characteristics on Compact Star-shaped Hypersurfaces in ${\bf R}^{2n}$

Resonance relations among periodic orbits on given energy hypersurfaces are very important for getting deeper understanding of the dynamics of the corresponding Hamiltonian systems. In this paper, we establish two new resonance identities for closed characteristics on every compact star-shaped hypersurface $Σ$ in ${\bf R}^{2n}$ when the number of geometrically distinct closed characteristics on $Σ$ is finite, which extend those identities established by C. Viterbo in 1989 for star-shaped hypersurfaces assuming in addition that all the closed characteristics and their iterates are non-degenerate, and that by W. Wang, X. Hu and Y. Long in 2007 for strictly convex hypersurfaces in ${\bf R}^{2n}$.

The Statics Dielectric Function and Interaction Potential In Strong Coupling With AdS/CFT

In this paper, we studied the static dielectric function and interaction potential in strong coupling limit with AdS/CFT correspondence. The dielectric function is depressed compared with that in weak coupling. The interaction potential then presents a weaker screening characteristics in strong coupling, which indicates a smaller Debye mass compared with weak coupling.

We calculate all components of thermal R-current correlators from AdS/CFT correspondence for non-zero momentum and energy. In zero momentum limit, we find an analytic expression for the components Gxx(Gyy). The dielectric function of strong coupling is also presented and compared with that in weak coupling.

Wireless Information and Power Transfer in Two-Way Amplify-and-Forward Relaying Channels

The various wireless networks have made the ambient radio frequency signals around the world. Wireless information and power transfer enables the devices to recycle energy from these ambient radio frequency signals and process information simultaneously. In this paper, we develop a wireless information and power transfer protocol in two-way amplify-and-forward relaying channels, where two sources exchange information via an energy harvesting relay node. The relay node collects energy from the received signals and uses it to provide the transmission power to forward the received signals. We analytically derive the exact expressions of the outage probability, the ergodic capacity and the finite-SNR diversity-multiplexing trade-off (DMT). Furthermore, the tight closed-form upper and lower bounds of the outage probability and the ergodic capacity are then developed. Moreover, the impact of the power splitting ratio is also evaluated and analyzed. Finally, we show that compared to the non-cooperative relaying scheme, the proposed protocol is a green solution to offer higher transmission rate and more reliable communication without consuming additional resource.

Coupled Magnetic Resonator Optical Waveguides - mimicking spin waves in coupled metamaterials

Optical resonators are important devices that control the properties of light and manipulate light-matter interaction. Various optical resonators are designed and fabricated using different techniques. For example, in coupled resonator optical waveguides, light energy is transported to other resonators through near-field coupling. In recent years, magnetic optical resonators based on LC resonance have been realized in several metallic microstructures. Such devices possess stronger local resonance and lower radiation loss compared with electric optical resonators. This study provides an overall introduction on the latest progress in coupled magnetic resonator optical waveguide (CMROW). Various waveguides composed of different magnetic resonators are presented and Lagrangian formalism is used to describe the CMROW. Moreover, several interesting properties of CMROW, such as abnormal dispersions and slow light effects, are discussed and CMROW applications in nonlinear and quantum optics are shown. Future novel nanophotonic devices can be developed using CMROW.

Due to the fundamental differences between wired and wireless networks, extending NC to wireless networks generates several new and significant practical challenges. Two-way information exchange (both symmetric and asymmetric). Network coding (NC), in principle, is a Layer-3 innovation that improves network throughput in wired networks for multicast/broadcast scenarios. Due to the fundamental differences between wired and wireless networks, extending NC to wireless networks generates several new and significant practical challenges. Two-way information exchange (both symmetric and asymmetric) between a pair of 802.11 sources/sinks using an intermediate relay node is a canonical scenario for evaluating the effectiveness of Wireless Network Coding (WNC) in a practical setting. Our primary objective in this work is to suggest pragmatic and novel modifications at the MAC and PHY layers of the 802.11 protocol stack on a Software Radio (SORA) platform to support WNC and obtain achievable throughput estimates via lab-scale experiments. Our results show that network coding (at the MAC or PHY layer) increases system throughput-typically by 20-30%%.

Some Field Theoretic Issues Regarding the Chiral Magnetic Effect

In this paper, we shall address some field theoretic issues regarding the chiral magnetic effect. The general structure of the magnetic current consistent with the electromagnetic gauge invariance is obtained and the impact of the infrared divergence is examined. Some subtleties on the relation between the chiral magnetic effect and the axial anomaly are clarified through a careful examination of the infrared limit of the relevant thermal diagrams.

The quantum description and stimulated emission radiation of coupled metamaterials

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in studying the quantum characteristics in plasmonic metamaterials. By using the Hamiltonian combined with second quantization, we have investigated the basic excitation of the coupled metamaterials and presented a quantum description of them. The interaction between the excitation of the coupled metamaterial and the exciton in the quantum dot material has been further considered with the aid of the interaction Hamiltonian. In such a damping system, a set of Langevin equations has been used to deal with the quantum motion of the system. And the stimulated emission has been found, which can be used to form a nano-laser. The quantum description of coupled metamaterial and the interaction system could work as the fundamental method in paving the way for studies on quantum effects in coupled metamaterials.

Hybridization effect in coupled metamaterials

Although the invention of the metamaterials has stimulated the interest of many researchers and possesses many important applications, the basic design idea is very simple: composing effective media from many small structured elements and controlling its artificial EM properties. According to the effective-media model, the coupling interactions between the elements in metamaterials are somewhat ignored; therefore, the effective properties of metamaterials can be viewed as the "averaged effect" of the resonance property of the individual elements. However, the coupling interaction between elements should always exist when they are arranged into metamaterials. Sometimes, especially when the elements are very close, this coupling effect is not negligible and will have a substantial effect on the metamaterials' properties. In recent years, it has been shown that the interaction between resonance elements in metamaterials could lead to some novel phenomena and interesting applications that do not exist in conventional uncoupled metamaterials. In this paper, we will give a review of these recent developments in coupled metamaterials. For the "meta-molecule" composed of several identical resonators, the coupling between these units produces multiple discrete resonance modes due to hybridization. In the case of a "meta-crystal" comprising an infinite number of resonators, these multiple discrete resonances can be extended to form a continuous frequency band by strong coupling. This kind of broadband and tunable coupled metamaterial may have interesting applications. Many novel metamaterials and nanophotonic devices could be developed from coupled resonator systems in the future.
