Singularities of divisors of small degrees on abelian varieties

Pareschi showed that an ample divisor of degree $d$ on a simple abelian variety of dimension $g$ has mild singularities when $d<g$. We extend his result to general polarized abelian varieties. We also show that ample divisors of degree $3$ or $4$ on an abelian variety have mild singularities.

Self-Explainable Graph Neural Networks for Link Prediction

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have achieved state-of-the-art performance for link prediction. However, GNNs suffer from poor interpretability, which limits their adoptions in critical scenarios that require knowing why certain links are predicted. Despite various methods proposed for the explainability of GNNs, most of them are post-hoc explainers developed for explaining node classification. Directly adopting existing post-hoc explainers for explaining link prediction is sub-optimal because: (i) post-hoc explainers usually adopt another strategy or model to explain a target model, which could misinterpret the target model; and (ii) GNN explainers for node classification identify crucial subgraphs around each node for the explanation; while for link prediction, one needs to explain the prediction for each pair of nodes based on graph structure and node attributes. Therefore, in this paper, we study a novel problem of self-explainable GNNs for link prediction, which can simultaneously give accurate predictions and explanations. Concretely, we propose a new framework and it can find various $K$ important neighbors of one node to learn pair-specific representations for links from this node to other nodes. These $K$ different neighbors represent important characteristics of the node and model various factors for links from it. Thus, $K$ neighbors can provide explanations for the existence of links. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets verify the effectiveness of the proposed framework for link prediction and explanation.

Multiple symmetry protected BIC lines in two dimensional synthetic parameter space

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have attracted significant interest in recent years due to their unique optical properties, such as infinite quality factor and wave localization. In order to improve the optical performance of BICs based devices, more degrees of freedom are required to tune BICs in high-dimension parameter space for practical applications. To effectively tune more BICs, we form a 2D synthetic parameter space based on a nanohole metasurface array. Multiple symmetry protected BIC modes with high Q factors can be achieved at high-order symmetry point. Through manipulating asymmetry parameters, BIC lines formed by a series of BIC modes can be found in the 2D synthetic parameter space. Moreover, the electric field distributions are investigated to demonstrate the generation and evolution of BICs. By measuring the absorption spectra, the tuning of multiple BICs with synthet-ic asymmetry parameters is experimentally explored, which agrees well with theoretical results. Therefore, our de-sign can provide new insight for a variety of on-chip applications, such as non-linear devices, integrated nanolasing array and high-resolution sensors for infrared molecular detection.

TCR: Short Video Title Generation and Cover Selection with Attention Refinement

With the widespread popularity of user-generated short videos, it becomes increasingly challenging for content creators to promote their content to potential viewers. Automatically generating appealing titles and covers for short videos can help grab viewers' attention. Existing studies on video captioning mostly focus on generating factual descriptions of actions, which do not conform to video titles intended for catching viewer attention. Furthermore, research for cover selection based on multimodal information is sparse. These problems motivate the need for tailored methods to specifically support the joint task of short video title generation and cover selection (TG-CS) as well as the demand for creating corresponding datasets to support the studies. In this paper, we first collect and present a real-world dataset named Short Video Title Generation (SVTG) that contains videos with appealing titles and covers. We then propose a Title generation and Cover selection with attention Refinement (TCR) method for TG-CS. The refinement procedure progressively selects high-quality samples and highly relevant frames and text tokens within each sample to refine model training. Extensive experiments show that our TCR method is superior to various existing video captioning methods in generating titles and is able to select better covers for noisy real-world short videos.

Thermalization and prethermalization in the soft-wall AdS/QCD model

The real-time dynamics of chiral phase transition is investigated in a two-flavor ($N_f=2$) soft-wall AdS/QCD model. To understand the dynamics of thermalization, we quench the system from initial states deviating from the equilibrium states. Then, we solve the nonequilibrium evolution of the order parameter (chiral condensate $\langle σ\equiv\bar{q}q\rangle$). It is shown that the system undergoes an exponential relaxation at temperatures away from the critical temperature $T_c$. The relaxation time diverges at $T_c$, presenting a typical behavior of critical slowing down. Numerically, we extract the dynamic critical exponent $z$, and get $z\approx 2$ by fitting the scaling behavior $σ\propto t^{-β/(νz)}$, where the mean-field static critical exponents (order parameter critical exponent $β=1/2$, correlation length critical exponent $ν=1/2$ ) have been applied. More interestingly, it is remarked that, for a large class of initial states, the system would linger over a quasi-steady state for a certain period of time before the thermalization. It is suggested that the interesting phenomenon, known as prethermalization, has been observed in the framework of holographic models. In such prethermal stage, we verify that the system is characterized by a universal dynamical scaling law and described by the initial-slip exponent $θ=0$.

Spin-split collinear antiferromagnets: a large-scale ab-initio study

It was recently discovered that, depending on their symmetries, collinear antiferromagnets can actually break the spin degeneracy in momentum space, even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. Such systems, recently dubbed altermagnets, are signalled by the emergence of a spin-momentum texture set mainly by the crystal and magnetic structure, relativistic effects playing a secondary role. Here we consider all collinear $q$=0 antiferromagnetic compounds in the MAGNDATA database allowing for spin-split bands. Based on density-functional calculations for the experimentally reported crystal and magnetic structures, we study more than sixty compounds and introduce numerical measures for the average momentum-space spin splitting. We highlight some compounds that are of particular interest, either due to a relatively large spin splitting, such as CoF$_2$ and FeSO$_4$F, or because of their low-energy electronic structure. The latter include LiFe$_2$F$_6$, which hosts nearly flat spin-split bands next to the Fermi energy, as well as RuO$_2$, CrNb$_4$S$_8$, and CrSb, which are spin-split antiferromagnetic metals.

Models See Hallucinations: Evaluating the Factuality in Video Captioning

Video captioning aims to describe events in a video with natural language. In recent years, many works have focused on improving captioning models' performance. However, like other text generation tasks, it risks introducing factual errors not supported by the input video. These factual errors can seriously affect the quality of the generated text, sometimes making it completely unusable. Although factual consistency has received much research attention in text-to-text tasks (e.g., summarization), it is less studied in the context of vision-based text generation. In this work, we conduct a detailed human evaluation of the factuality in video captioning and collect two annotated factuality datasets. We find that 57.0% of the model-generated sentences have factual errors, indicating it is a severe problem in this field. However, existing evaluation metrics are mainly based on n-gram matching and show little correlation with human factuality annotation. We further propose a weakly-supervised, model-based factuality metric FactVC, which outperforms previous metrics on factuality evaluation of video captioning. The datasets and metrics will be released to promote future research for video captioning.

Anisotropic magnetism and electronic properties of the kagome metal SmV6Sn6

Kagome magnets are expected to feature emergent properties due to the interplays among geometry, magnetism, electronic correlation, and band topology. The magnetism and topological electronic states can be tuned via the rare earth engineering in RV6Sn6 kagome metals, where R is a rare earth element. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of SmV6Sn6, a metal with two-dimensional kagome nets of vanadium and frustrated triangular Sm lattice. Partial of the Sm atoms are shifted from the normal R positions by c/2 along the c axis. Magnetic measurements reveal obvious anisotropy, where the easy magnetic axis is within the ab plane. Electronic transports show multiband behaviors below 200 K. Density functional theory calculations find that the electronic structure of SmV6Sn6 hosts flat bands, Dirac cone, and saddle point arising from the V-3d electrons near the Fermi level. No evidence for the existence of charge density wave or magnetic order down to 2 K can be observed. Thus, SmV6Sn6 can be viewed as a modest disordered derivative of the RV6Sn6 structure, in which the disordered rare earth ions can suppress the magnetic order and charge density wave in the RV6Sn6 kagome family.

Experimental mode-pairing measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution without global phase-locking

In the past two decades, quantum key distribution networks based on telecom fibers have been implemented on metropolitan and intercity scales. One of the bottlenecks lies in the exponential decay of the key rate with respect to the transmission distance. Recently proposed schemes mainly focus on achieving longer distances by creating a long-arm single-photon interferometer over two communication parties. Despite their advantageous performance over long communication distances, the requirement of phase-locking between two independent lasers is technically challenging. By adopting the recently-proposed mode-pairing idea, we realize high-performance quantum key distribution without global phase-locking. Using two independent off-the-shelf lasers, we show a quadratic key-rate improvement over the conventional measurement-device-independent schemes in the regime of metropolitan and intercity distances. For longer distances, we also boost the key rate performance by three orders of magnitude via 304 km commercial fiber and 407 km ultra-low-loss fiber. We expect this ready-to-implement high-performance scheme to be widely used in future intercity quantum communication networks.

Content-aware Warping for View Synthesis

Existing image-based rendering methods usually adopt depth-based image warping operation to synthesize novel views. In this paper, we reason the essential limitations of the traditional warping operation to be the limited neighborhood and only distance-based interpolation weights. To this end, we propose content-aware warping, which adaptively learns the interpolation weights for pixels of a relatively large neighborhood from their contextual information via a lightweight neural network. Based on this learnable warping module, we propose a new end-to-end learning-based framework for novel view synthesis from a set of input source views, in which two additional modules, namely confidence-based blending and feature-assistant spatial refinement, are naturally proposed to handle the occlusion issue and capture the spatial correlation among pixels of the synthesized view, respectively. Besides, we also propose a weight-smoothness loss term to regularize the network. Experimental results on light field datasets with wide baselines and multi-view datasets show that the proposed method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and visually. Coexistence of zigzag antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity in compressed NiPSe3

NiPSe3 is regarded as a bandwidth-controlled Mott insulator, distinct from the widely studied Mott insulating magnetic graphene MPSe3 (M = Mn and Fe) family. By employing high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction, we observe two structural transitions as a function of pressure. With the help of first-principles calculations, we discover the antiferromagnetic (AFM) moment directions of NiPSe3 switch from out-of-plane to in-plane and the honeycomb layers slide relative to each other at the first structural transition. The in-plane AFM order persists until the second structural transition, whereupon the two-dimensional (2D) structure assumes a more three-dimensional (3D) character. A bandwidth-controlled Mott insulator-metal transition (IMT) occurs between the two structural transitions at 8.0 GPa, concomitant with the emergence of superconductivity with 4.8 K. The superconductivity in NiPSe3 emerging in the 2D monoclinic phase coexists with the in-plane AFM order and continues into the 3D trigonal phase. Our electronic structure calculations reveal that the Mott IMT and superconductivity in NiPSe3 are both closely related to the enhanced Se2- 4p and Ni2+ 3d electronic hybridizations under pressure. From these results, we construct the temperature-pressure electronic phase diagram of NiPSe3, revealing rich physics and many similarities with copper oxide and iron-based superconductors.

(Anti-)Stokes Scattering on Kinks

At leading order, there are three inelastic scattering processes beginning with a quantum kink and a fundamental meson. Meson multiplication, in which the final state is a kink and two mesons, was treated recently. In this note we treat the other two, (anti)-Stokes scattering, in which the kink's shape mode is (de-)excited and the final state contains one meson. In the case of a general scalar kink, we find analytic formulas for the forward and backward scattering amplitudes and probabilities as functions of the momentum of the incident meson. The general results are then specialized to the kink of the $ϕ^4$ double-well model.

Semi-Supervised Subspace Clustering via Tensor Low-Rank Representation

In this letter, we propose a novel semi-supervised subspace clustering method, which is able to simultaneously augment the initial supervisory information and construct a discriminative affinity matrix. By representing the limited amount of supervisory information as a pairwise constraint matrix, we observe that the ideal affinity matrix for clustering shares the same low-rank structure as the ideal pairwise constraint matrix. Thus, we stack the two matrices into a 3-D tensor, where a global low-rank constraint is imposed to promote the affinity matrix construction and augment the initial pairwise constraints synchronously. Besides, we use the local geometry structure of input samples to complement the global low-rank prior to achieve better affinity matrix learning. The proposed model is formulated as a Laplacian graph regularized convex low-rank tensor representation problem, which is further solved with an alternative iterative algorithm. In addition, we propose to refine the affinity matrix with the augmented pairwise constraints. Comprehensive experimental results on eight commonly-used benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art methods. The code is publicly available at https://github.com/GuanxingLu/Subspace-Clustering.

Adaptive Fuzzy Tracking Control with Global Prescribed-Time Prescribed Performance for Uncertain Strict-Feedback Nonlinear Systems

Adaptive fuzzy control strategies are established to achieve global prescribed performance with prescribed-time convergence for strict-feedback systems with mismatched uncertainties and unknown nonlinearities. Firstly, to quantify the transient and steady performance constraints of the tracking error, a class of prescribed-time prescribed performance functions are designed, and a novel error transformation function is introduced to remove the initial value constraints and solve the singularity problem in existing works. Secondly, based on dynamic surface control methods, controllers with or without approximating structures are established to guarantee that the tracking error achieves prescribed transient performance and converges into a prescribed bounded set within prescribed time. In particular, the settling time and initial value of the prescribed performance function are completely independent of initial conditions of the tracking error and system parameters, which improves existing results. Moreover, with a novel Lyapunov-like energy function, not only the differential explosion problem frequently occurring in backstepping techniques is solved, but the drawback of the semi-global boundedness of tracking error induced by dynamic surface control can be overcome. The validity and effectiveness of the main results are verified by numerical simulations on practical examples.

Deep Attention-guided Graph Clustering with Dual Self-supervision

Existing deep embedding clustering works only consider the deepest layer to learn a feature embedding and thus fail to well utilize the available discriminative information from cluster assignments, resulting performance limitation. To this end, we propose a novel method, namely deep attention-guided graph clustering with dual self-supervision (DAGC). Specifically, DAGC first utilizes a heterogeneity-wise fusion module to adaptively integrate the features of an auto-encoder and a graph convolutional network in each layer and then uses a scale-wise fusion module to dynamically concatenate the multi-scale features in different layers. Such modules are capable of learning a discriminative feature embedding via an attention-based mechanism. In addition, we design a distribution-wise fusion module that leverages cluster assignments to acquire clustering results directly. To better explore the discriminative information from the cluster assignments, we develop a dual self-supervision solution consisting of a soft self-supervision strategy with a triplet Kullback-Leibler divergence loss and a hard self-supervision strategy with a pseudo supervision loss. Extensive experiments validate that our method consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods on six benchmark datasets. Especially, our method improves the ARI by more than 18.14% over the best baseline.

Kinks Multiply Mesons

In a (1+1)-dimensional scalar quantum field theory, we calculate the leading-order probability of meson multiplication, which is the inelastic scattering process: kink + meson $\rightarrow$ kink + 2 mesons. We also calculate the differential probability with respect to the final meson momenta and the probability that one or two of the final mesons recoils back towards the source. In the ultrarelativistic limit of the initial meson, the total probability tends to a constant, which we calculate analytically in the $ϕ^4$ model. At this order the meson sector conserves energy on its own, while the incoming meson applies a positive pressure to the kink. This is in contrast with the situation in classical field theory, where Romanczukiewicz and collaborators have shown that, in the presence of a reflectionless kink, only meson fusion is allowed, resulting in a negative radiation pressure on the kink.

A Reduced Inner Product for Kink States

Solitons in classical field theories correspond to states in quantum field theories. If the spatial dimension is infinite, then momentum eigenstates are not normalizable. This leads to infrared divergences, which are generally regularized via wave packets or by compactification. However, in some applications both possibilities are undesirable. In the present note, we introduce a finite inner product on translation-invariant kink states that allows us to compute probabilities involving these nonnormalizable states. Essentially, it is the quotient of the usual inner product by the translation group. We present a surprisingly simple formula for the reduced inner product, which requires no knowledge of the zero-mode dependence of the states but includes a correction which accounts for the mixing between zero modes and normal modes as the kink moves. As an application, we show that initial and final state corrections to meson multiplication vanish. However, we find that the pole of the subleading term in the initial state requires an infinitesimal imaginary shift.

Technical Debt Management in OSS Projects: An Empirical Study on GitHub

Technical debt (TD) refers to delayed tasks and immature artifacts that may bring short-term benefits but incur extra costs of change during maintenance and evolution in the long term. TD has been extensively studied in the past decade, and numerous open source software (OSS) projects were used to explore specific aspects of TD and validate various approaches for TD management (TDM). However, there still lacks a comprehensive understanding on the practice of TDM in OSS development, which penetrates the OSS community's perception of the TD concept and how TD is managed in OSS development. To this end, we conducted an empirical study on the whole GitHub to explore the adoption and execution of TDM based on issues in OSS projects. We collected 35,278 issues labeled as TD (TD issues) distributed over 3,598 repositories in total from the issue tracking system of GitHub between 2009 and 2020. The findings are that: (1) the OSS community is embracing the TD concept; (2) the analysis of TD instances shows that TD may affect both internal and external quality of software systems; (3) only one TD issue was identified in 31.1% of the repositories and all TD issues were identified by only one developer in 69.0% of the repositories; (4) TDM was ignored in 27.3% of the repositories after TD issues were identified; and (5) among the repositories with TD labels, 32.9% have abandoned TDM while only 8.2% adopt TDM as a consistent practice. These findings provide valuable insights for practitioners in TDM and promising research directions for further investigation.
