A Tracker Solution for a Holographic Dark Energy Model

We investigate a kind of holographic dark energy model with the future event horizon the IR cutoff and the equation of state -1. In this model, the constraint on the equation of state automatically specifies an interaction between matter and dark energy. With this interaction included, an accelerating expansion is obtained as well as the transition from deceleration to acceleration. It is found that there exists a stable tracker solution for the numerical parameter $d>1$, and $d$ smaller than one will not lead to a physical solution. This model provides another possible phenomenological framework to alleviate the cosmological coincidence problem in the context of holographic dark energy. Some properties of the evolution which are relevant to cosmological parameters are also discussed.

Parametrization of K-essence and Its Kinetic Term

We construct the non-canonical kinetic term of a k-essence field directly from the effective equation of state function $w_k(z)$, which describes the properties of the dark energy. Adopting the usual parametrizations of equation of state we numerically reproduce the shape of the non-canonical kinetic term and discuss some features of the constructed form of k-essence.

Cosmic Ray Acceleration by E-Parallel Reconnection of Force-Free Fields

We propose that nearly every accelerated CR was part of the parallel current that maintains all force-free (f-f) magnetic fields. Charged particles are accelerated by the E-parallel (to the magnetic filed B) produced by reconnection. The inferred total energy in extra-galactic cosmic rays is 10^(60) ergs per galaxy spacing volume, provided that acceleration mechanisms assumed do not preferentially only accelerate ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). This total energy is about 10^5 times the parent galactic CR or magnetic energy. The formation energy of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at galaxy centers, 10^(62) ergs, becomes the only feasible source. An efficient dynamo process converts gravitational free energy into magnetic energy in an accretion disk around a SMBH. Aided by Keplerian winding, this dynamo converts a poloidal seed field into f-f fields, which are transported into the general inter-galactic medium (IGM). This magnetic energy is also efficiently converted into particle energies, as evidenced by the radiation from energetic particles. CRs of the IGM are then the result of the continuing dissipation, in a Hubble time, of this magnetic energy, by acceleration within the f-f fields confined within the super-galactic walls and filaments of large scale structures. In addition, most UHECRs are diffusively lost to the galactic voids before the GZK attenuation time, 10^8 years and hence are lost from view. Similarly within the galaxy we expect that the winding by accretion are the sources of galactic CR acceleration. [edited]

Experimental Test of the Kochen-Specker Theorem for Single Qubits using Positive Operator-Valued Measures

We present an experimental scheme for the implementation of arbitrary generalized measurements, represented by positive-operator valued measures, on the polarization of single photons, using linear optical devices. Further, we experimentally test a Kochen-Specker theorem for single qubits using positive operator-valued measures. Our experimental results for the first time disprove non-contextual hidden-variable theories, even for single qubits.

Spatial Localization and Relativistic Transformation of Quantum Spins

The purity of a reduced state for spins that is pure in the rest frame will most likely appear to degrade because spin and momentum become mixed when viewed by a moving observer. We show that such a boost-induced decrease in spin purity observed in a moving reference frame is intrinsically related to the spatial localization properties of the wave package observed in the rest frame. Furthermore, we prove that, for any localized pure state with separable spin and momentum in the rest frame, its reduced density matrix for spins inevitably appears to be mixed whenever viewed from a moving reference frame.

Experimental Quantum Cloning with Prior Partial Information

When prior partial information about a state to be cloned is available, it can be cloned with a fidelity higher than that of universal quantum cloning. We experimentally verify this intriguing relationship between the cloning fidelity and the prior information by reporting the first experimental optimal quantum state-dependent cloning, using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. Our experiments may further have important implications into many quantum information processing protocols.

On the construction of certain 6-dimensional symplectic manifolds with Hamiltonian circle actions

Let $(M, ω)$ be a connected, compact 6-dimensional symplectic manifold equipped with a semi-free Hamiltonian $S^1$ action such that the fixed point set consists of isolated points or surfaces. Assume dim $H^2(M)<3$, in \cite{L}, we defined a certain invariant of such spaces which consists of fixed point data and twist type, and we divided the possible values of these invariants into six ``types''. In this paper, we construct such manifolds with these ``types''. As a consequence, we have a precise list of the values of these invariants.

Cosmological Mestel Disks and the Rossby Vortex Instability: The Origin of Supermassive Black Holes

A scenario is put forth for the formation of supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies. It depends upon the formation of a Mestel disk with a flat rotation curve, where the mass is proportional to r and thickness to 1/r. Such disks should form from the collapse of uniformly rotating, isolated, gaseous clouds, either proto-galactic, galaxy-mass damped Lyman alpha clouds or the gas that survives galaxy mergers. We propose that in any case the disk will be unstable to the Rossby vortex instability (RVI). This instability grows from any large, steep pressure gradient in an optically thick disk. Such pressure gradients either occur adjacent to compact objects or could be triggered by individual supernovae in and around the disk. Upon excitation, the RVI transports angular momentum far more efficiently than the turbulence of a viscosity-based Shakura-Sunyaev disk. The critical column density condition in a L* Mestel disk predicts that the black hole mass is ~ 10^8 Msolar and is also proportional to the 1/4 power of the velocity dispersion, in accordance with observations.

Vortices in the Co-orbital Region of an Embedded Protoplanet

We present global 2-D inviscid disk simulations with an embedded planet, emphasizing the non-linear dynamics in its co-orbital region. We find that the potential vorticity of the flow in this region is not conserved due to the presence of two spiral shocks produced by the planet. As the system evolves, the potential vorticity profile develops extrema (inflection points) which eventually render the flow unstable. Vortices are produced in association with the potential vorticity minima. Born in the separatrix region, these vortices experience close-encounters with the planet, consequently exerting strong torques on the planet. The existence of these vortices have important implications on understanding the migration rates of low mass planets.

Quantum games of asymmetric information

We investigate quantum games in which the information is asymmetrically distributed among the players, and find the possibility of the quantum game outperforming its classical counterpart depends strongly on not only the entanglement, but also the informational asymmetry. What is more interesting, when the information distribution is asymmetric, the contradictive impact of the quantum entanglement on the profits is observed, which is not reported in quantum games of symmetric information.

Phase-transition-like Behavior of Quantum Games

The discontinuous dependence of the properties of a quantum game on its entanglement has been shown up to be very much like phase transitions viewed in the entanglement-payoff diagram [J. Du et al., Phys. Rev. Lett, 88, 137902 (2002)]. In this paper we investigate such phase-transition-like behavior of quantum games, by suggesting a method which would help to illuminate the origin of such kind of behavior. For the particular case of the generalized Prisoners' Dilemma, we find that, for different settings of the numerical values in the payoff table, even though the classical game behaves the same, the quantum game exhibits different and interesting phase-transition-like behavior.

Experimental Implementation of the Quantum Random-Walk Algorithm

The quantum random walk is a possible approach to construct new quantum algorithms. Several groups have investigated the quantum random walk and experimental schemes were proposed. In this paper we present the experimental implementation of the quantum random walk algorithm on a nuclear magnetic resonance quantum computer. We observe that the quantum walk is in sharp contrast to its classical counterpart. In particular, the properties of the quantum walk strongly depends on the quantum entanglement.

Relativistic-invariant quantum entanglement between the spins of moving bodies

The entanglement between spins of a pair of particles may change because the spin and momentum become mixed when viewed by a moving observer [R.M. Gingrich and C. Adami, Phys. Rev. Lett. 89, 270402 (2002)]. In this paper, it is shown that, if the momenta are appropriately entangled, the entanglement between the spins of the Bell states can remain maximal when viewed by any moving observer. Further, we suggest a relativistic-invariant protocol for quantum communication, with which the non-relativistic quantum information theory could be invariantly applied to relativistic situations.

Particle Energization in an Expanding Magnetized Relativistic Plasma

Using a 2-1/2-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) code to simulate the relativistic expansion of a magnetized collisionless plasma into a vacuum, we report a new mechanism in which the magnetic energy is efficiently converted into the directed kinetic energy of a small fraction of surface particles. We study this mechanism for both electron-positron and electron-ion (mi/me=100, me is the electron rest mass) plasmas. For the electron-positron case the pairs can be accelerated to ultra-relativistic energies. For electron-ion plasmas most of the energy gain goes to the ions.

Playing Prisoner's Dilemma with Quantum Rules

Quantum game theory is a recently developing field of physical research. In this paper, we investigate quantum games in a systematic way. With the famous instance of the Prisoner's Dilemma, we present the fascinating properties of quantum games in different conditions, i.e. different number of the players, different strategic space of the players and different amount of the entanglement involved.

Continuous-Variable Quantum Games

We investigate the quantization of games in which the players can access to a continuous set of classical strategies, making use of continuous-variable quantum systems. For the particular case of the Cournot's Duopoly, we find that, even though the two players both act as "selfishly" in the quantum game as they do in the classical game, they are found to virtually cooperate due to the quantum entanglement between them. We also find that the original Einstein-Podolksy-Rosen state contributes to the best profits that the two firms could ever attain. Moreover, we propose a practical experimental setup for the implementation of such quantum games.
