Simulation of Binary-Single Interactions in AGN Disk I: Gas-Enhanced Binary Orbital Hardening

Stellar-mass binary black hole\,(BBH) mergers within the accretion disks of active galactic nuclei may contribute to gravitational wave\,(GW) events detected by grounded-based GW detectors. In particular, the interaction between a BBH and a single stellar-mass black hole\,(sBH), known as the binary-single interaction\,(BSI) process, can potentially lead to GW events with detectable non-zero eccentricity. Previous studies of the BSI process, which neglected the effects of gas, showed that BSIs contribute non-negligibly to GW events in a coplanar disk environment. In this work, we conduct a series of 2-dimensional hydrodynamical and N-body simulations to explore the BSI in a gas environment by coupling REBOUND with Athena++. We perform 360 simulation runs, spanning parameters in disk surface density \(Σ_0\) and impact parameter \(b\). We find that the gas-induced energy dissipation within the three-body system becomes significant if the encounter velocity between the sBHs is sufficiently large\,($\gg c_s$). Our simulation results indicate that approximately half of the end states of the BSI are changed by gas. Furthermore, at higher gas density, the number of close encounters during the BSI process will increase and the end-state BBHs tend to be more compact. Consequently, the presence of gas may shorten the GW merger timescale for end-state BBHs and increase the three-body merger rate.

Hybrid artificial intelligence echogenic components-based diagnosis of adnexal masses on ultrasound

Background: Adnexal masses are heterogeneous and have varied sonographic presentations, making them difficult to diagnose correctly. Purpose: Our study aimed to develop an innovative hybrid artificial intelligence/computer aided diagnosis (AI/CADx)-based pipeline to distinguish between benign and malignant adnexal masses on ultrasound imaging based upon automatic segmentation and echogenic-based classification. Methods: The retrospective study was conducted on a consecutive dataset of patients with an adnexal mass. There was one image per mass. Mass borders were segmented from the background via a supervised U-net algorithm. Masses were spatially subdivided automatically into their hypo- and hyper-echogenic components by a physics-driven unsupervised clustering algorithm. The dataset was separated by patient into a training/validation set (95 masses; 70%) and an independent held-out test set (41 masses; 30%). Eight component-based radiomic features plus a binary measure of the presence or absence of solid components were used to train a linear discriminant analysis classifier to distinguish between malignant and benign masses. Classification performance was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), along with sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive value, positive predictive value, and accuracy at target 95% sensitivity. Results: The cohort included 133 patients with 136 adnexal masses. In distinguishing between malignant and benign masses, the pipeline achieved an AUC of 0.90 [0.84, 0.95] on the training/validation set and 0.93 [0.83, 0.98] on the independent test set. Strong diagnostic performance was observed at the target 95% sensitivity. Conclusions: A novel hybrid AI/CADx echogenic components-based ultrasound imaging pipeline can distinguish between malignant and benign adnexal masses with strong diagnostic performance.

SDIGLM: Leveraging Large Language Models and Multi-Modal Chain of Thought for Structural Damage Identification

Existing computer vision(CV)-based structural damage identification models demonstrate notable accuracy in categorizing and localizing damage. However, these models present several critical limitations that hinder their practical application in civil engineering(CE). Primarily, their ability to recognize damage types remains constrained, preventing comprehensive analysis of the highly varied and complex conditions encountered in real-world CE structures. Second, these models lack linguistic capabilities, rendering them unable to articulate structural damage characteristics through natural language descriptions. With the continuous advancement of artificial intelligence(AI), large multi-modal models(LMMs) have emerged as a transformative solution, enabling the unified encoding and alignment of textual and visual data. These models can autonomously generate detailed descriptive narratives of structural damage while demonstrating robust generalization across diverse scenarios and tasks. This study introduces SDIGLM, an innovative LMM for structural damage identification, developed based on the open-source VisualGLM-6B architecture. To address the challenge of adapting LMMs to the intricate and varied operating conditions in CE, this work integrates a U-Net-based semantic segmentation module to generate defect segmentation maps as visual Chain of Thought(CoT). Additionally, a multi-round dialogue fine-tuning dataset is constructed to enhance logical reasoning, complemented by a language CoT formed through prompt engineering. By leveraging this multi-modal CoT, SDIGLM surpasses general-purpose LMMs in structural damage identification, achieving an accuracy of 95.24% across various infrastructure types. Moreover, the model effectively describes damage characteristics such as hole size, crack direction, and corrosion severity.

AI analysis of medical images at scale as a health disparities probe: a feasibility demonstration using chest radiographs

Health disparities (differences in non-genetic conditions that influence health) can be associated with differences in burden of disease by groups within a population. Social determinants of health (SDOH) are domains such as health care access, dietary access, and economics frequently studied for potential association with health disparities. Evaluating SDOH-related phenotypes using routine medical images as data sources may enhance health disparities research. We developed a pipeline for using quantitative measures automatically extracted from medical images as inputs into health disparities index calculations. Our study focused on the use case of two SDOH demographic correlates (sex and race) and data extracted from chest radiographs of 1,571 unique patients. The likelihood of severe disease within the lung parenchyma from each image type, measured using an established deep learning model, was merged into a single numerical image-based phenotype for each patient. Patients were then separated into phenogroups by unsupervised clustering of the image-based phenotypes. The health rate for each phenogroup was defined as the median image-based phenotype for each SDOH used as inputs to four imaging-derived health disparities indices (iHDIs): one absolute measure (between-group variance) and three relative measures (index of disparity, Theil index, and mean log deviation). The iHDI measures demonstrated feasible values for each SDOH demographic correlate, showing potential for medical images to serve as a novel probe for health disparities. Large-scale AI analysis of medical images can serve as a probe for a novel data source for health disparities research.

Unveiling Spatiotemporal Properties of the Quasi-periodic Pulsations in the Balmer Continuum at 3600 Å in an X-class Solar White-light Flare

Quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) in the Balmer continuum of solar white-light flares (WLFs) are rarely reported, and accurately pinpointing the spatial source of flaring QPPs remains a significant challenge. We present spatiotemporal characteristics of QPPs of an X2.8 two-ribbon solar WLF (SOL2023-12-14T17:02), which was well observed by the White-light Solar Telescope (WST) aboard the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory, with high-cadence imaging (1--2 s) in the Balmer continuum at 3600 Å. Combined with additional multi-instrument data, we find that the enhancement of the WLF in both Balmer and Paschen continua shows strong spatiotemporal correlation with hard X-ray (HXR) emissions. Notably, the pulses in the WST Balmer continuum exhibited a near-zero time lag with most HXR pulses, whereas soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet emissions showed a lag of 2--3 s. Interestingly, quasi-harmonic QPPs with periods of $\sim$11 s and $\sim$20 s were observed in multiple wavelengths in the rising phase of the white-light continuum. Furthermore, we employed Fourier transform to spatially locate the QPPs around 11 and 20 s, revealing that they primarily originated from the east flare ribbon, which exhibited the most substantial continuum enhancement. More interestingly, we find that the west ribbon contributed significantly to the 11-second QPP but had a weaker contribution to the 20-second QPP. Moreover, the occurrence of quasi-harmonic QPPs is temporally coincident with the rapid elongation and separation motions of flare ribbons. Possible mechanisms for the quasi-harmonic QPPs have been discussed. These observations provide valuable insights into QPP modeling for solar and stellar flares.

Extracting Formal Specifications from Documents Using LLMs for Automated Testing

Automated testing plays a crucial role in ensuring software security. It heavily relies on formal specifications to validate the correctness of the system behavior. However, the main approach to defining these formal specifications is through manual analysis of software documents, which requires a significant amount of engineering effort from experienced researchers and engineers. Meanwhile, system update further increases the human labor cost to maintain a corresponding formal specification, making the manual analysis approach a time-consuming and error-prone task. Recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated promising capabilities in natural language understanding. Yet, the feasibility of using LLMs to automate the extraction of formal specifications from software documents remains unexplored. We conduct an empirical study by constructing a comprehensive dataset comprising 603 specifications from 37 documents across three representative open-source software. We then evaluate the most recent LLMs' capabilities in extracting formal specifications from documents in an end-to-end fashion, including GPT-4o, Claude, and Llama. Our study demonstrates the application of LLMs in formal specification extraction tasks while identifying two major limitations: specification oversimplification and specification fabrication. We attribute these deficiencies to the LLMs' inherent limitations in processing and expressive capabilities, as well as their tendency to fabricate fictional information. Inspired by human cognitive processes, we propose a two-stage method, annotation-then-conversion, to address these challenges. Our method demonstrates significant improvements over the end-to-end method, with a 29.2% increase in the number of correctly extracted specifications and a 14.0% improvement in average accuracy. In particular, our best-performing LLM achieves an accuracy of 71.6%.

Understanding the Baryon Cycle: Fueling Star Formation via Inflows in Milky Way-like Galaxies

Galaxies are not isolated systems; they continuously interact with their surroundings by ejecting gas via stellar feedback and accreting gas from the environment. Understanding the interplay between outflows from the disc and the surrounding circumgalactic medium (CGM) is key to learning how star-forming galaxies evolve. Our goal is to understand how gas in the CGM is accreted onto the inner regions of the disc, making it available for the formation of stars, exploring the connection between stellar feedback and gas accretion from the CGM in Milky Way-like galaxies. We focus on the distribution of vertical and radial gas flows to and from the disc as a function of galactocentric radius, and examine the implications of these processes for the evolution of such galaxies. We use the Arepo code coupled with the SMUGGLE sub-grid model to perform hydrodynamic N-body simulations of 9 different galaxies surrounded by a hot CGM. Each simulation features a gaseous disc with different mass and scale length, allowing us to examine how disc structure impacts gas dynamics. We find evidence of a crucial link between stellar feedback and gas accretion from the CGM, which together play an essential role in sustaining ongoing star formation in the disc. In particular, the ejection of gas from the disc plane by stellar feedback leads to the generation of a baryon cycle in which the CGM gas is mainly accreted onto the external regions of the disc ($ \approx 3-10$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ of gas is accreted into the whole disc). From these regions it is then transported to the centre with radial mass rates $\approx 1-4$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ on average, owing to angular momentum conservation, forming new stars and starting the whole cycle again. We find that both vertical accretion onto the inner regions of the disc and the radial transport of gas from the disc outskirts are necessary to sustain star formation.

OCCO: LVM-guided Infrared and Visible Image Fusion Framework based on Object-aware and Contextual COntrastive Learning

Image fusion is a crucial technique in the field of computer vision, and its goal is to generate high-quality fused images and improve the performance of downstream tasks. However, existing fusion methods struggle to balance these two factors. Achieving high quality in fused images may result in lower performance in downstream visual tasks, and vice versa. To address this drawback, a novel LVM (large vision model)-guided fusion framework with Object-aware and Contextual COntrastive learning is proposed, termed as OCCO. The pre-trained LVM is utilized to provide semantic guidance, allowing the network to focus solely on fusion tasks while emphasizing learning salient semantic features in form of contrastive learning. Additionally, a novel feature interaction fusion network is also designed to resolve information conflicts in fusion images caused by modality differences. By learning the distinction between positive samples and negative samples in the latent feature space (contextual space), the integrity of target information in fused image is improved, thereby benefiting downstream performance. Finally, compared with eight state-of-the-art methods on four datasets, the effectiveness of the proposed method is validated, and exceptional performance is also demonstrated on downstream visual task.

Revisit Hamiltonian $S^1$-manifolds of dimension 6 with 4 fixed points

If the circle acts in a Hamiltonian way on a compact symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$, then there are at least $n+1$ fixed points. The case that there are exactly $n+1$ isolated fixed points has its importance due to various reasons. Besides dimension 2 with 2 fixed points, and dimension 4 with 3 fixed points, which are known, the next interesting case is dimension 6 with 4 fixed points, for which the integral cohomology ring and the total Chern class of the manifold, and the sets of weights of the circle action at the fixed points are classified by Tolman. In this note, we use a new different argument to prove Tolman's results for the dimension 6 with 4 fixed points case. We observe that the integral cohomology ring of the manifold has a nice basis in terms of the moment map values of the fixed points, and the largest weight between two fixed points is nicely related to the first Chern class of the manifold. We will use these ingredients to determine the sets of weights of the circle action at the fixed points, and moreover to determine the global invariants the integral cohomology ring and total Chern class of the manifold. The idea allows a direct approach of the problem, and the argument is short and easy to follow.

Efficient and Expressive Public Key Authenticated Encryption with Keyword Search in Multi-user Scenarios

Public key authenticated encryption with keyword search (PAEKS) represents a significant advancement of secure and searchable data sharing in public network systems, such as medical systems. It can effectively mitigate the risk of keyword guessing attacks (KGA), which is a critical issue in public key encryption with keyword search (PEKS). However, in scenarios with a large number of users, the enforced point-to-point access control necessitates that the data sender encrypt the same keyword using the public keys of multiple receivers to create indexes, while the data receiver also must generate trapdoors of size linear to senders in the system. The burden on users aiming for efficient data sharing is considerable, as the overheads increase linearly with the number of users. Furthermore, the majority of current PAEKS schemes lack expressive search functions, including conjunctions, disjunctions, or any monotone boolean formulas, which are prevalent in practical applications. To tackle the abovementioned challenges, we propose an efficient and expressive PAEKS scheme. In efficiency, one auxiliary server is integrated to assist users in generating indexes and trapdoors. Users encrypt with their respective private keys along with the public keys of the servers, facilitating secure and searchable data sharing while significantly minimizing overhead. Additionally, the LSSS is employed to implement expressive search, including monotone boolean queries. We also obfuscate the mapping relationship associated with the LSSS matrix to the keywords, thereby enhancing the privacy protection. Security analysis alongside theoretical and experimental evaluations of our scheme illustrates its practicality and efficiency in multi-user data sharing scenarios.

Volumetric Reconstruction From Partial Views for Task-Oriented Grasping

Object affordance and volumetric information are essential in devising effective grasping strategies under task-specific constraints. This paper presents an approach for inferring suitable grasping strategies from limited partial views of an object. To achieve this, a recurrent generative adversarial network (R-GAN) was proposed by incorporating a recurrent generator with long short-term memory (LSTM) units for it to process a variable number of depth scans. To determine object affordances, the AffordPose knowledge dataset is utilized as prior knowledge. Affordance retrieving is defined by the volume similarity measured via Chamfer Distance and action similarities. A Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) reinforcement learning model is further implemented to refine the retrieved grasp strategies for task-oriented grasping. The retrieved grasp strategies were evaluated on a dual-arm mobile manipulation robot with an overall grasping accuracy of 89% for four tasks: lift, handle grasp, wrap grasp, and press.

Effects of the pseudogap and the Fermi surface on the rapid Hall-coefficient changes in cuprates

High-$T_c$ cuprates are characterized by strong spin fluctuations, which give rise to antiferromagnetic and pseudogap phases and may be key to the high superconducting critical temperatures observed in these materials. Experimental studies have revealed significant changes in the Hall coefficient $R_H$ across these phases, a phenomenon closely related to both spin fluctuations and changes in the Fermi surface morphology. Using the perturbation correction to Gaussian approximation (PCGA), we investigate the two-dimensional(2D) square-lattice single-band Hubbard model and obtain the self-energy with a finite imaginary part due to scattering. We calculate the density dependence of the Hall number $n_H=1/(qR_H)$. For small hole (or electron) doping $p$ (or $x$), our numerical results show that $n_H$ transitions from $p$ to $1+p$ for hole-doped systems, and from $-x$ to $1-x$ for electron-doped systems -- both in agreement with experimental findings. Furthermore, we discuss the correlation between phase boundaries and the observed peculiar changes in the Hall number.

Hallo3: Highly Dynamic and Realistic Portrait Image Animation with Video Diffusion Transformer

Existing methodologies for animating portrait images face significant challenges, particularly in handling non-frontal perspectives, rendering dynamic objects around the portrait, and generating immersive, realistic backgrounds. In this paper, we introduce the first application of a pretrained transformer-based video generative model that demonstrates strong generalization capabilities and generates highly dynamic, realistic videos for portrait animation, effectively addressing these challenges. The adoption of a new video backbone model makes previous U-Net-based methods for identity maintenance, audio conditioning, and video extrapolation inapplicable. To address this limitation, we design an identity reference network consisting of a causal 3D VAE combined with a stacked series of transformer layers, ensuring consistent facial identity across video sequences. Additionally, we investigate various speech audio conditioning and motion frame mechanisms to enable the generation of continuous video driven by speech audio. Our method is validated through experiments on benchmark and newly proposed wild datasets, demonstrating substantial improvements over prior methods in generating realistic portraits characterized by diverse orientations within dynamic and immersive scenes. Facial Attractiveness Prediction in Live Streaming: A New Benchmark and Multi-modal Method

Facial attractiveness prediction (FAP) has long been an important computer vision task, which could be widely applied in live streaming for facial retouching, content recommendation, etc. However, previous FAP datasets are either small, closed-source, or lack diversity. Moreover, the corresponding FAP models exhibit limited generalization and adaptation ability. To overcome these limitations, in this paper we present LiveBeauty, the first large-scale live-specific FAP dataset, in a more challenging application scenario, i.e., live streaming. 10,000 face images are collected from a live streaming platform directly, with 200,000 corresponding attractiveness annotations obtained from a well-devised subjective experiment, making LiveBeauty the largest open-access FAP dataset in the challenging live scenario. Furthermore, a multi-modal FAP method is proposed to measure the facial attractiveness in live streaming. Specifically, we first extract holistic facial prior knowledge and multi-modal aesthetic semantic features via a Personalized Attractiveness Prior Module (PAPM) and a Multi-modal Attractiveness Encoder Module (MAEM), respectively, then integrate the extracted features through a Cross-Modal Fusion Module (CMFM). Extensive experiments conducted on both LiveBeauty and other open-source FAP datasets demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance. Dataset will be available soon.

One Model for ALL: Low-Level Task Interaction Is a Key to Task-Agnostic Image Fusion

Advanced image fusion methods mostly prioritise high-level missions, where task interaction struggles with semantic gaps, requiring complex bridging mechanisms. In contrast, we propose to leverage low-level vision tasks from digital photography fusion, allowing for effective feature interaction through pixel-level supervision. This new paradigm provides strong guidance for unsupervised multimodal fusion without relying on abstract semantics, enhancing task-shared feature learning for broader applicability. Owning to the hybrid image features and enhanced universal representations, the proposed GIFNet supports diverse fusion tasks, achieving high performance across both seen and unseen scenarios with a single model. Uniquely, experimental results reveal that our framework also supports single-modality enhancement, offering superior flexibility for practical applications. Our code will be available at https://github.com/AWCXV/GIFNet.

Hamiltonian $S^1$-manifolds which are like a coadjoint orbit of $G_2$

Consider a compact symplectic manifold of dimension $2n$ with a Hamiltionan circle action. Then there are at least $n+1$ fixed points. Motivated by recent works on the case that the fixed point set consists of precisely $n+1$ isolated points, this paper studies a Hamiltonian $S^1$ action on a $10$-dimensional compact symplectic manifold with exactly 6 isolated fixed points. We study the relations of the following data: the first Chern class of the manifold, the largest weight of the action, all the weights of the action, the total Chern class of the manifold, and the integral cohomology ring of the manifold. We show how certain data can determine the others and show the similarities of these data with those of a coadjoint orbit of the exceptional Lie group $G_2$, equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a subcircle of the maximal torus.

Generalization Bounds for Equivariant Networks on Markov Data

Equivariant neural networks play a pivotal role in analyzing datasets with symmetry properties, particularly in complex data structures. However, integrating equivariance with Markov properties presents notable challenges due to the inherent dependencies within such data. Previous research has primarily concentrated on establishing generalization bounds under the assumption of independently and identically distributed data, frequently neglecting the influence of Markov dependencies. In this study, we investigate the impact of Markov properties on generalization performance alongside the role of equivariance within this context. We begin by applying a new McDiarmid's inequality to derive a generalization bound for neural networks trained on Markov datasets, using Rademacher complexity as a central measure of model capacity. Subsequently, we utilize group theory to compute the covering number under equivariant constraints, enabling us to obtain an upper bound on the Rademacher complexity based on this covering number. This bound provides practical insights into selecting low-dimensional irreducible representations, enhancing generalization performance for fixed-width equivariant neural networks.
