Approximation of spherical convex bodies of constant width $\pi/2$

Let $C\subset \mathbb{S}^2$ be a spherical convex body of constant width $\tau$. It is known that (i) if $\tau<\pi/2$ then for any $\varepsilon>0$ there exists a spherical convex body $C_\varepsilon$ of constant width $\tau$ whose boundary consists only of arcs of circles of radius $\tau$ such that the Hausdorff distance between $C$ and $C_\varepsilon$ is at most $\varepsilon$; (ii) if $\tau>\pi/2$ then for any $\varepsilon>0$ there exists a spherical convex body $C_\varepsilon$ of constant width $\tau$ whose boundary consists only of arcs of circles of radius $\tau-\frac{\pi}{2}$ and great circle arcs such that the Hausdorff distance between $C$ and $C_\varepsilon$ is at most $\varepsilon$. In this paper, we present an approximation of the remaining case $\tau=\pi/2$, that is, if $\tau=\pi/2$ then for any $\varepsilon>0$ there exists a spherical polytope $\mathcal{P}_\varepsilon$ of constant width $\pi/2$ such that the Hausdorff distance between $C$ and $\mathcal{P}_\varepsilon$ is at most $\varepsilon$.

Behavior of convex integrand at apex of its Wulff shape

Let $\gamma: S^n\to \mathbb{R}_+$ be a convex integrand and $\mathcal{W}_\gamma$ be the Wulff shape of $ \gamma$. Apex point naturally arise in non-smooth Wulff shape, in particular, vertex of convex polytope. %Let $P\in S^n$. In this paper, we study the behavior of convex integrand around apex point of its Wulff shape. We prove that $\gamma(P)$ is locally maximum, and $\mathbb{R}_+ P\cap \partial \mathcal{W}_\gamma$ is an apex point of $\mathcal{W}_\gamma$ if and only if the graph of $\gamma$ around the apex point is a pice of sphere. As an application of the proof of this result, we prove that for any spherical convex body $C$ of constant width $\tau>\pi/2$, there exists a sequence $\{C_i\}_{i=1}^\infty$ of convex bides of constant width $\tau$, whose boundary consists only of arcs of circles of radius $\tau-\frac{\pi}{2}$ and great circle segments such that $\lim_{I\to \infty}C_i=C$ with respect to the Hausdorff distance.

Self-dual polytope and self-dual smooth Wulff shape

For any Wulff shape $\mathcal{W}$, its dual Wulff shape and spherical Wulff shape $\widetilde{\mathcal{W}}$ can be defined naturally. A self-dual Wulff shape is a Wulff shape equaling its dual Wulff shape exactly. In this paper, we show that if a spherical convex polytope $P$ is of constant width $\delta$, then $\delta=\pi/2$. As an application of this fact, we prove that a polytope Wulff shape is self-dual if and only if its spherical Wulff shape is a spherical convex body of constant width. We also prove that a smooth Wulff shape is self-dual if and only if for any interior point $P$ of $\widetilde{\mathcal{W}}$ and for any point $Q$ of the intersection of the boundary of $\widetilde{\mathcal{W}}$ and the graph of its spherical support function (with respect to $P$), the image of $Q$ under the spherical blow-up (with respect to $P$) is always a boundary point of $\widetilde{\mathcal{W}}$.

Spherical Separation Theorem

In this paper, it is shown that for any two non-empty closed (resp., open) and spherical convex subsets $\mathcal{W}_1, \mathcal{W}_2$ of $S^n$, the intersection $\mathcal{W}_1\cap \mathcal{W}_2$ is empty if and only if the subset $\{P\in S^n\; |\; P\cdot Q>0 \mbox{ for any } Q\in \mathcal{W}_1 \mbox{ and } P\cdot R<0 \mbox{ for any } R\in \mathcal{W}_2\}$ is non-empty, open (resp., closed) and spherical convex.

Simultaneous smoothness and simultaneous stability of a $C^\infty$ strictly convex integrand and its dual

In this paper, we investigate simultaneous properties of a convex integrand $\gamma$ and its dual $\delta$. The main results are the following three. (1) For a $C^\infty$ convex integrand $\gamma: S^n\to \mathbb{R}_+$, its dual convex integrand $\delta: S^n\to \mathbb{R}_+$ is of class $C^\infty$ if and only if $\gamma$ is a strictly convex integrand. (2) Let $\gamma: S^n\to \mathbb{R}_+$ be a $C^\infty$ strictly convex integrand. Then, $\gamma$ is stable if and only if its dual convex integrand $\delta: S^n\to \mathbb{R}_+$ is stable. (3) Let $\gamma: S^n\to \mathbb{R}_+$ be a $C^\infty$ strictly convex integrand. Suppose that $\gamma$ is stable. Then, for any $i$ $(0\le i\le n)$, a point $\theta_0\in S^n$ is a non-degenerate critical point of $\gamma$ with Morse index $i$ if and only if its antipodal point $-\theta_0\in S^n$ is a non-degenerate critical point of the dual convex integrand $\delta$ with Morse index $(n-i)$.

Maximum and minimum of support functions

For given continuous functions $\gamma_{{}_{i}}: S^{n}\to \mathbb{R}_{+}$ (where $i=1, 2$), the functions $\gamma_{{}_{max}}$ and $\gamma_{{}_{min}}$ can be defined as natural way. In this paper, we show that the Wulff shape associated to $\gamma_{{}_{max}}$ is the convex hull of the union of Wulff shapes associated to $\gamma_{{}_1}$ and $\gamma_{{}_2}$ , if $\gamma_{{}_1}$ and $\gamma_{{}_2}$ are convex integrands. And, the Wulff shape associated to $\gamma_{{}_{min}}$ is the intersection of Wulff shapes associated to $\gamma_{{}_1}$ and $\gamma_{{}_2}$. Moreover, relationships between their dual Wulff shapes are given.

The Wulff construction for convex integrands

For any given Wulff shape $\mathcal{W}$, we can define the unique continuous function $S^{n}\to \mathbb{R}_{+}$ called convex integrand, denoted by $\gamma_{{}_{\mathcal{W}}}$. In this paper, we show that, for any Wulff shapes $\mathcal{W}_{1}$ and $\mathcal{W}_{2}$, the equality $d(\gamma_{{}_{\mathcal{W}_{1}}}, \gamma_{{}_{\mathcal{W}_{2}}})= h(\mathcal{W}_{1}, \mathcal{W}_{2})$ holds, where $d$ is the maximum distance of the function space consisting of convex integrands and $h$ is the Pompeiu-Hausdorff distance of the space consisting of Wulff shapes. Moreover, applications of this result are given.

Simultaneous stability of $C^\infty$ convex integrands and their duals

In this paper, the following three are shown. (1) For a $C^\infty$ convex integrand $\gamma: S^n\to \mathbb{R}_+$, its dual convex integrand $\delta: S^n\to \mathbb{R}_+$ is of class $C^\infty$. (2) For a stable convex integrand $\gamma: S^n\to \mathbb{R}_+$, its dual convex integrand $\delta: S^n\to \mathbb{R}_+$ is stable. (3) Let $\gamma: S^n\to \mathbb{R}_+$ be a stable convex integrand. Then, for any $i$ $(0\le i\le n)$, $\theta_0\in S^n$ is a non-degenerate critical point of $\gamma$ with Morse index $i$ if and only if $-\theta_0\in S^n$ is a non-degenerate critical point of the dual convex integrand ${\delta}$ with Morse index $(n-i)$.

Stability of $C^\infty$ convex integrands

In this paper, it is shown that the set consisting of stable convex integrands $S^n\to \mathbb{R}_+$ is open and dense in the set consisting of $C^\infty$ convex integrands with respect to Whitney $C^\infty$ topology. Moreover, an application of the proof of this result is also shown.

The spherical dual transform is an isometry for spherical Wulff shapes

A spherical Wulff shape is the spherical counterpart of a Wulff shape which is the well-known geometric model of a crystal at equilibrium introduced by G. Wulff in 1901. As same as a Wulff shape, each spherical Wulff shape has its unique dual. The spherical dual transform for spherical Wulff shapes is the mapping which maps a spherical Wulff shape to its spherical dual Wulff shape. In this paper, it is shown that the spherical dual transform for spherical Wulff shapes is an isometry with respect to the Pompeiu-Hausdorff metric.
