On the emergence of dead cores in elliptic systems with sublinear competitive interactions

In this paper, we study semilinear elliptic systems with sublinear coupling terms, showing that, under competition-type interactions, solutions typically have dead cores, i.e., they vanish on certain open subsets of the domain. We apply our results to a large class of solutions treated in the literature, for instance to ground states and least energy sign-changing solutions, under Dirichlet boundary conditions or in the whole space. The proofs are based on a general result stating that subsolutions to a certain sublinear equation have dead cores, and on uniform H\"older bounds.

Spectral minimal partitions of unbounded domains

We study the problem of constructing $k$-spectral minimal partitions of domains in $d$ dimensions, where the energy functional to be minimized is a $p$-norm ($1 \le p \le \infty$) of the infimum of the spectrum of a suitable Schr\"odinger operator $-\Delta +V$, with Dirichlet conditions on the boundary of the partition elements (cells). The main novelty of this paper is that the domains may be unbounded, including of infinite volume. First, we prove a sharp upper bound for the infimal energy among all $k$-partitions by a threshold value which involves the infimum $\Sigma$ of the essential spectrum of the Schr\"odinger operator on the whole domain as well as the infimal energy among all $k-1$-partitions. Strictly below such threshold, we develop a concentration-compactness-type argument showing optimal partitions exist, and each cell admits ground states (i.e., the infimum of the spectrum on each cell is a simple isolated eigenvalue). Second, for $p<\infty$, when the energy and the threshold level coincide, we show there may or may not be minimizing partitions. Moreover, even when these exist, they may not have ground states. Third, for $p=\infty$, minimal partitions always exist, even at the threshold level, but these may or may not admit ground states. Moreover, below the threshold, we can always construct a minimizer, which is an equipartition. At the threshold value we show that spectral minimal partitions may not need to be equipartitions. We give a variety of examples of both domains and potentials to illustrate the new phenomena that occur in this setting.

Least Energy Solutions for Cooperative and Competitive Schr\"odinger Systems with Neumann Boundary Conditions

We study the following gradient elliptic system with Neumann boundary conditions \begin{equation*} -\Delta u + \lambda_1 u = u^3 + \beta uv^2, \ -\Delta v + \lambda_2 v = v^3 + \beta u^2 v \ \text{in } \Omega,\qquad \frac{\partial u}{\partial \nu} = \frac{\partial v}{\partial \nu} = 0 \ \text{on } \partial \Omega, \end{equation*} where $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N $ is a bounded $ C^2$ domain with $ N \leq 4 $, and $ \nu $ denotes the outward unit normal on the boundary. We investigate the existence of non-constant least energy solutions in both the cooperative ($\beta > 0 $) and the competitive ($ \beta < 0 $) regimes, considering both the definite and the indefinite case, namely $\lambda_1,\lambda_2\in\mathbb R$. We emphasize that our analysis includes both the subcritical case $ N \leq 3 $ and the critical case $ N = 4 $. Depending on the values of $\beta,\lambda_1,\lambda_2$, the least energy solution is obtained either via a linking theorem, by minimizing over a suitable Nehari manifold, or by direct minimization on the set of all non-trivial weak solutions. Our results and techniques can be also adapted to cover some previously untreated cases for Dirichlet conditions.

Stability transitions of NLS action ground-states on metric graphs

We study the orbital stability of action ground-states of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation over two particular cases of metric graphs, the $\mathcal{T}$ and the tadpole graphs. We show the existence of stability transitions near the $L^2$-critical exponent, a new dynamical feature of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. More precisely, as the frequency $\lambda$ increases, the action ground-state transitions from stable to unstable and then back to stable (or vice-versa). This result is complemented with the stability analysis of ground-states in the asymptotic cases of low/high frequency and weak/strong nonlinear interaction. Finally, we present a numerical simulation of the stability of action ground-states depending on the nonlinearity and the frequency parameter, which validates the aforementioned theoretical results.

A comprehensive study of bound-states for the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation on single-knot metric graphs

We study the existence and qualitative properties of action ground-states (that is, bound-states with minimal action) {of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation} over single-knot metric graphs -- which are made of half-lines, loops and pendants, all connected at a single vertex. First, we prove existence of action ground-state for generic single-knot graphs, even in the absence of an associated variational problem. Second, for regular single-knot graphs of length $\ell$, we perform a complete analysis of positive monotone bound-states. Furthermore, we characterize all positive bound-states when $\ell$ is small and prove some symmetry-breaking results for large $\ell$. Finally, we apply the results to some particular graphs to illustrate the complex relation between action ground-states and the topological {and metric} features of the underlying metric graph. The proofs are nonvariational, using a careful phase-plane analysis, the study of sections of period functions, asymptotic estimates and blowup arguments. We show, in particular, how nonvariational techniques are complementary to variational ones in order to deeply understand bound-states of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation on metric graphs.

On least energy solutions to a pure Neumann Lane-Emden system: convergence, symmetry breaking, and multiplicity

We consider the following Lane-Emden system with Neumann boundary conditions \[ -\Delta u= |v|^{q-1}v \text{ in } \Omega,\qquad -\Delta v= |u|^{p-1}u \text{ in } \Omega,\qquad \partial_\nu u=\partial_\nu v=0 \text{ on } \partial \Omega, \] where $\Omega$ is a bounded smooth domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$ with $N \ge 1$. We study the multiplicity of solutions and the convergence of least energy (nodal) solutions (l.e.s.) as the exponents $p, q > 0$ vary in the subcritical regime $1/(p+1) + 1/(q+1) > (N-2)/N$, or in the critical case $1/(p+1) + 1/(q+1) =(N-2)/N$ with some additional assumptions. We consider, for the first time in this setting, the cases where one or two exponents tend to zero, proving that l.e.s. converge to a problem with a sign nonlinearity. Our approach is based on an alternative characterization of least energy levels in terms of the nonlinear eigenvalue problem \[ \Delta (|\Delta u|^{\frac 1 q -1} \Delta u) = \lambda |u|^{p-1} u, \quad \partial_\nu u=\partial_\nu(|\Delta u|^{\frac 1 q -1} \Delta u)=0 \text{ on } \partial \Omega. \] As an application, we show a symmetry breaking phenomenon for l.e.s. of a bilaplacian equation with sign nonlinearity and for other equations with nonlinear higher-order operators.

Free boundary regularity for a spectral optimal partition problem with volume and inclusion constraints

This paper is devoted to a complete characterization of the free boundary of all solutions to the following spectral $k$-partition problem with measure and inclusion constraints: \[ \inf \left\{\sum_{i=1}^k \lambda_1(\omega_i)\; : \; \omega_i \subset \Omega \mbox{ are nonempty open sets for all } i=1,\ldots, k,\; \omega_i \cap \omega_j = \emptyset \: \text{for all}\: i \not=j \mbox{ and } \sum_{i=1}^{k}|\omega_i| = a \right\}, \] where $\Omega$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$, $a\in (0,|\Omega|)$. In particular, we prove free boundary conditions, classify contact points, characterize the regular and singular part of the free boundary (including branching points), and describe the interaction of the partition with the fixed boundary $\partial \Omega$. The proof is based on a perturbed version of the problem, combined with monotonicity formulas, blowup analysis and classification of blowups, suitable deformations of optimal sets and eigenfunctions, as well as the improvement of flatness of [Russ-Trey-Velichkov, CVPDE 58, 2019] for the one-phase points, and of [De Philippis-Spolaor-Velichkov, Invent. Math. 225, 2021] at two-phase points.

An asymptotic relationship between Lane-Emden systems and the 1-bilaplacian equation

Consider the following Lane-Emden system with Dirichlet boundary conditions: \[ -\Delta U = |V|^{\beta-1}V,\ -\Delta V = |U|^{\alpha-1}U \text{ in }\Omega,\qquad U=V= 0 \text{ on }\partial \Omega, \] in a bounded domain $\Omega$, for $(\alpha,\beta)$ subcritical. We study the asymptotic behavior of least-energy solutions when $\beta\to \infty$, for any fixed $\alpha$ which, in the case $N\geq 3$, is smaller than $2/(N-2)$. We show that these solutions converge to least-energy solutions of a semilinear equation involving the 1-bilaplacian operator, establishing a new relationship between these objects. As a corollary, we deduce the asymptotic behavior of solutions to $p$-bilaplacian Lane-Emden equations as the power in the nonlinearity goes to infinity. For the proof, we rely on the reduction by inversion method and on tools from nonsmooth analysis, considering an auxiliary nonlinear eigenvalue problem. We characterize its value in terms of the Green function, and prove a Faber-Krahn type result. In the case of a ball, we can characterize explicitly the eigenvalue, as well as the limit profile of least-energy solutions to the system as $\beta\to\infty$.

Topics in elliptic problems: from semilinear equations to shape optimization

In this paper, which corresponds to an updated version of the author's Habilitation lecture in Mathematics, we do an overview of several topics in elliptic problems. We review some old and new results regarding the Lane-Emden equation, both under Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, then focus on sign-changing solutions for Lane-Emden systems. We also survey some results regarding fully nontrivial solutions to gradient elliptic systems with mixed cooperative and competitive interactions. We conclude by exhibiting results on optimal partition problems, with cost functions either related to Dirichlet eigenvalues or to the Yamabe equation. Several open problems are referred along the text.

Classification and stability of positive solutions to the NLS equation on the $\mathcal{T}$-metric graph

Given $\lambda>0$ and $p>2$, we present a complete classification of the positive $H^1$-solutions of the equation $-u''+\lambda u=|u|^{p-2}u$ on the $\mathcal{T}$-metric graph (consisting of two unbounded edges and a terminal edge of length $\ell>0$, all joined together at a single vertex). This study implies, in particular, the uniqueness of action ground states. Moreover, for $p\sim 6^-$, the notions of action and energy ground states do not coincide and energy ground states are not unique. In the $L^2$-supercritical case $p>6$, we prove that, for $\lambda\sim 0^+$ and $\lambda\sim +\infty$, action ground states are orbitally unstable for the flow generated by the associated time-dependent NLS equation $i\partial_tu + \partial^2_{xx} u + |u|^{p-2}u=0$. Finally, we provide numerical evidence of the uniqueness of energy ground states for $p\sim 2^+$ and of the existence of both stable and unstable action ground states for $p\sim6$.

Spectral partition problems with volume and inclusion constraints

In this paper, we discuss a class of spectral partition problems with a measure constraint, for partitions of a given bounded connected open set. We establish the existence of an optimal open partition, showing that the corresponding eigenfunctions are locally Lipschitz continuous, and obtain some qualitative properties for the partition. The proof uses an equivalent weak formulation that involves a minimization problem of a penalized functional where the variables are functions rather than domains, suitable deformations, blowup techniques, and a monotonicity formula.

Optimal uniform bounds for competing variational elliptic systems with variable coefficients

Let $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N$ be an open set. In this work we consider solutions of the following gradient elliptic system \[ -\text{div}(A(x)\nabla u_{i,\beta}) = f_i(x,u_{i,\beta}) + a(x)\beta |u_{i, \beta}|^{\gamma -1}u_{i, \beta} \mathop{\sum_{j=1}^l}_{j\neq i} |u_{j, \beta}|^{\gamma + 1}, \] for $i=1,\ldots, l$. We work in the competitive case, namely $\beta<0$. Under suitable assumptions on $A$, $a$, $f_i$ and on the exponent $\gamma$, we prove that uniform $L^\infty$-bounds on families of positive solutions $\{u_\beta\}_{\beta<0}=\{(u_{1,\beta},\ldots, u_{l,\beta})\}_{\beta<0}$ imply uniform Lipschitz bounds (which are optimal). One of the main points in the proof are suitable generalizations of Almgren's and Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman's monotonicity formulas for solutions of such systems. Our work generalizes previous results, where the case $A(x)=Id$ (i.e. the operator is the Laplacian) was treated.

Existence of solutions on the critical hyperbola for a pure Lane-Emden system with Neumann boundary conditions

We study the following Lane-Emden system \[ -\Delta u=|v|^{q-1}v \quad \text{ in } \Omega, \qquad -\Delta v=|u|^{p-1}u \quad \text{ in } \Omega, \qquad u_\nu=v_\nu=0 \quad \text{ on } \partial \Omega, \] with $\Omega$ a bounded regular domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N \ge 4$, and exponents $p, q$ belonging to the so-called critical hyperbola $1/(p+1)+1/(q+1)=(N-2)/N$. We show that, under suitable conditions on $p, q$, least-energy (sign-changing) solutions exist, and they are classical. In the proof we exploit a dual variational formulation which allows to deal with the strong indefinite character of the problem. We establish a compactness condition which is based on a new Cherrier type inequality. We then prove such condition by using as test functions the solutions to the system in the whole space and performing delicate asymptotic estimates. If $N \ge 5$, $p=1$, the system above reduces to a biharmonic equation, for which we also prove existence of least-energy solutions. Finally, we prove some partial symmetry and symmetry-breaking results in the case $\Omega$ is a ball or an annulus.

Existence of solutions to a slightly supercritical pure Neumann problem

We show the existence and multiplicity of concentrating solutions to a pure Neumann slightly supercritical problem in a ball. This is the first existence result for this kind of problems in the supercritical regime. Since the solutions must satisfy a compatibility condition of zero average, all of them have to change sign. Our proofs are based on a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction argument which incorporates the zero-average condition using suitable symmetries. Our approach also guarantees the existence and multiplicity of solutions to subcritical Neumann problems in annuli. More general symmetric domains (e.g. ellipsoids) are also discussed.

Least energy positive solutions of critical Schr\"{o}dinger systems with mixed competition and cooperation terms: the higher dimensional case

Let $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^{N}$ be a smooth bounded domain. In this paper we investigate the existence of least energy positive solutions to the following Schr\"{o}dinger system with $d\geq 2$ equations \begin{equation*} -\Delta u_{i}+\lambda_{i}u_{i}=|u_{i}|^{p-2}u_{i}\sum_{j = 1}^{d}\beta_{ij}|u_{j}|^{p} \text{ in } \Omega, \quad u_i=0 \text{ on } \partial \Omega, \qquad i=1,...,d, \end{equation*} in the case of a critical exponent $2p=2^*=\frac{2N}{N-2}$ in high dimensions $N\geq 5$. We treat the focusing case ($\beta_{ii}>0$ for every $i$) in the variational setting $\beta_{ij}=\beta_{ji}$ for every $i\neq j$, dealing with a Br\'ezis-Nirenberg type problem: $-\lambda_{1}(\Omega)<\lambda_{i}<0$, where $\lambda_{1}(\Omega)$ is the first eigenvalue of $(-\Delta,H^1_0(\Omega))$. We provide several sufficient conditions on the coefficients $\beta_{ij}$ that ensure the existence of least energy positive solutions; these include the situations of pure cooperation ($\beta_{ij}> 0$ for every $i\neq j$), pure competition ($\beta_{ij}\leq 0$ for every $i\neq j$) and coexistence of both cooperation and competition coefficients. Some proofs depend heavily on the fact that $1 0$, $-\lambda_1(\Omega)<\lambda<0$ for all $N\geq 4$, a result which is new in dimensions $N=4,5$.

Free boundary problems with long-range interactions: uniform Lipschitz estimates in the radius

Consider the class of optimal partition problems with long range interactions \[ \inf \left\{ \sum_{i=1}^k \lambda_1(\omega_i):\ (\omega_1,\ldots, \omega_k) \in \mathcal{P}_r(\Omega) \right\}, \] where $\lambda_1(\cdot)$ denotes the first Dirichlet eigenvalue, and $\mathcal{P}_r(\Omega)$ is the set of open $k$-partitions of $\Omega$ whose elements are at distance at least $r$: $\textrm{dist}(\omega_i,\omega_j)\geq r$ for every $i\neq j$. In this paper we prove optimal uniform bounds (as $r\to 0^+$) in $\mathrm{Lip}$-norm for the associated $L^2$-normalized eigenfunctions, connecting in particular the nonlocal case $r>0$ with the local one $r \to 0^+$. The proof uses new pointwise estimates for eigenfunctions, a one-phase Alt-Caffarelli-Friedman and the Caffarelli-Jerison-Kenig monotonicity formulas, combined with elliptic and energy estimates. Our result extends to other contexts, such as singularly perturbed harmonic maps with distance constraints.

Yamabe systems, optimal partitions, and nodal solutions to the Yamabe equation

We give conditions for the existence of regular optimal partitions, with an arbitrary number $\ell\geq 2$ of components, for the Yamabe equation on a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$. To this aim, we study a weakly coupled competitive elliptic system of $\ell$ equations, related to the Yamabe equation. We show that this system has a least energy solution with nontrivial components if $\dim M\geq 10$, $(M,g)$ is not locally conformally flat and satisfies an additional geometric assumption whenever $\dim M=10$. Moreover, we show that the limit profiles of the components of the solution separate spatially as the competition parameter goes to $-\infty$, giving rise to an optimal partition. We show that this partition exhausts the whole manifold, and we prove the regularity of both the interfaces and the limit profiles, together with a free boundary condition. For $\ell=2$ the optimal partition obtained yields a least energy sign-changing solution to the Yamabe equation with precisely two nodal domains.

On the least-energy solutions of the pure Neumann Lane-Emden equation

We study the pure Neumann Lane-Emden problem in a bounded domain \[ -\Delta u = |u|^{p-1} u \text{ in }\Omega, \qquad \partial_\nu u=0 \text{ on }\partial \Omega, \] in the subcritical, critical, and supercritical regimes. We show existence and convergence of least-energy (nodal) solutions (l.e.n.s.). In particular, we prove that l.e.n.s. converge to a l.e.n.s. of a problem with sign nonlinearity as $p\searrow 0$; to a l.e.n.s. of the critical problem as $p\nearrow 2^*$ (in particular, pure Neumann problems exhibit no blowup phenomena at the critical Sobolev exponent $2^*$); and we show that the limit as $p\to 1$ depends on the domain. Our proofs rely on different variational characterizations of solutions including a dual approach and a nonlinear eigenvalue problem. Finally, we also provide a qualitative analysis of l.e.n.s., including symmetry, symmetry-breaking, and monotonicity results for radial solutions.
