Random clusters in the Villain and XY models

In the Ising and Potts model, random cluster representations provide a geometric interpretation to spin correlations. We discuss similar constructions for the Villain and XY models, where spins take values in the circle, as well as extensions to models with different single site spin spaces. In the Villain case, we highlight natural interpretation in terms of the cable system extension of the model. We also list questions and open problems on the cluster representations obtained in this fashion.

Liouville quantum gravity from random matrix dynamics

We establish the first connection between $2d$ Liouville quantum gravity and natural dynamics of random matrices. In particular, we show that if $(U_t)$ is a Brownian motion on the unitary group at equilibrium, then the measures $$ |\det(U_t - e^{i \theta})|^{\gamma} dt d\theta $$ converge in the limit of large dimension to the $2d$ LQG measure, a properly normalized exponential of the $2d$ Gaussian free field. Gaussian free field type fluctuations associated with these dynamics were first established by Spohn (1998) and convergence to the LQG measure in $2d$ settings was conjectured since the work of Webb (2014), who proved the convergence of related one dimensional measures by using inputs from Riemann-Hilbert theory. The convergence follows from the first multi-time extension of the result by Widom (1973) on Fisher-Hartwig asymptotics of Toeplitz determinants with real symbols. To prove these, we develop a general surgery argument and combine determinantal point processes estimates with stochastic analysis on Lie group, providing in passing a probabilistic proof of Webb's $1d$ result. We believe the techniques will be more broadly applicable to matrix dynamics out of equilibrium, joint moments of determinants for classes of correlated random matrices, and the characteristic polynomial of non-Hermitian random matrices.

Metric growth dynamics in Liouville quantum gravity

We consider the metric growth in Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) for $\gamma \in (0,2)$. We show that a process associated with the trace of the free field on the boundary of a filled LQG ball is stationary, for every $\gamma \in (0,2)$. The infinitesimal version of this stationarity combined with an explicit expression of the generator of the evolution of the trace field $(h_t)$ provides a formal invariance equation that a measure on trace fields must satisfy. When considering a modified process corresponding to an evolution of LQG surfaces, we prove that the invariance equation is satisfied by an explicit $\sigma$-finite measure on trace fields. This explicit measure on trace fields only corresponds to the pure gravity case. On the way to prove this invariance, we retrieve the specificity of both $\gamma = \sqrt{8/3}$ and of the LQG dimension $d_{\gamma} = 4$. In this case, we derive an explicit expression of the (nonsymmetric) Dirichlet form associated with the process $(h_t)$ and construct dynamics associated with its symmetric part.

Volume of metric balls in Liouville quantum gravity

We study the volume of metric balls in Liouville quantum gravity (LQG). For $\gamma \in (0,2)$, it has been known since the early work of Kahane (1985) and Molchan (1996) that the LQG volume of Euclidean balls has finite moments exactly for $p \in (-\infty, 4/\gamma^2)$. Here, we prove that the LQG volume of LQG metric balls admits all finite moments. This answers a question of Gwynne and Miller and generalizes a result obtained by Le Gall for the Brownian map, namely, the $\gamma = \sqrt{8/3}$ case. We use this moment bound to show that on a compact set the volume of metric balls of size $r$ is given by $r^{d_{\gamma}+o_r(1)}$, where $d_{\gamma}$ is the dimension of the LQG metric space. Using similar techniques, we prove analogous results for the first exit time of Liouville Brownian motion from a metric ball. Gwynne-Miller-Sheffield (2020) prove that the metric measure space structure of $\gamma$-LQG a.s. determines its conformal structure when $\gamma =\sqrt{8/3}$; their argument and our estimate yield the result for all $\gamma \in (0,2)$.

Weak LQG metrics and Liouville first passage percolation

For $\gamma \in (0,2)$, we define a weak $\gamma$-Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) metric to be a function $h\mapsto D_h$ which takes in an instance of the planar Gaussian free field (GFF) and outputs a metric on the plane satisfying a certain list of natural axioms. We show that these axioms are satisfied for any subsequential limits of Liouville first passage percolation. Such subsequential limits were proven to exist by Ding-Dub\'edat-Dunlap-Falconet (2019). It is also known that these axioms are satisfied for the $\sqrt{8/3}$-LQG metric constructed by Miller and Sheffield (2013-2016). For any weak $\gamma$-LQG metric, we obtain moment bounds for diameters of sets as well as point-to-point, set-to-set, and point-to-set distances. We also show that any such metric is locally bi-H\"older continuous with respect to the Euclidean metric and compute the optimal H\"older exponents in both directions. Finally, we show that LQG geodesics cannot spend a long time near a straight line or the boundary of a metric ball. These results are used in subsequent work by Gwynne and Miller which proves that the weak $\gamma$-LQG metric is unique for each $\gamma \in (0,2)$, which in turn gives the uniqueness of the subsequential limit of Liouville first passage percolation. However, most of our results are new even in the special case when $\gamma=\sqrt{8/3}$.

Tightness of Liouville first passage percolation for $\gamma \in (0,2)$

We study Liouville first passage percolation metrics associated to a Gaussian free field $h$ mollified by the two-dimensional heat kernel $p_t$ in the bulk, and related star-scale invariant metrics. For $\gamma \in (0,2)$ and $\xi = \frac{\gamma}{d_{\gamma}}$, where $d_{\gamma}$ is the Liouville quantum gravity dimension defined in [Ding-Gwynne18], we show that renormalized metrics $(\lambda_t^{-1} e^{\xi p_t * h} ds)_{t \in (0,1)}$ are tight with respect to the uniform topology. In particular, we show that subsequential limits are bi-H\"older with respect to the Euclidean topology, obtain tail estimates for side-to-side distances and derive error bounds for the normalizing constants $\lambda_t$.

Liouville metric of star-scale invariant fields: tails and Weyl scaling

We study the Liouville metric associated to an approximation of a log-correlated Gaussian field with short range correlation. We show that below a parameter $\gamma_c >0$, the left-right length of rectangles for the Riemannian metric $e^{\gamma \phi_{0,n}} ds^2$ with various aspect ratio is concentrated with quasi-lognormal tails, that the renormalized metric is tight when $\gamma < \min ( \gamma_c, 0.4)$ and that subsequential limits are consistent with the Weyl scaling.

Asymptotic analysis of downlink MIMO systems over Rician fading channels

In this work, we focus on the ergodic sum rate in the downlink of a single-cell large-scale multi-user MIMO system in which the base station employs N antennas to communicate with $K$ single-antenna user equipments. A regularized zero-forcing (RZF) scheme is used for precoding under the assumption that each link forms a spatially correlated MIMO Rician fading channel. The analysis is conducted assuming $N$ and $K$ grow large with a non trivial ratio and perfect channel state information is available at the base station. Recent results from random matrix theory and large system analysis are used to compute an asymptotic expression of the signal-to-interference- plus-noise ratio as a function of the system parameters, the spatial correlation matrix and the Rician factor. Numerical results are used to evaluate the performance gap in the finite system regime under different operating conditions.
