Global Capacity Measures for Deep ReLU Networks via Path Sampling

Classical results on the statistical complexity of linear models have commonly identified the norm of the weights $\|w\|$ as a fundamental capacity measure. Generalizations of this measure to the setting of deep networks have been varied, though a frequently identified quantity is the product of weight norms of each layer. In this work, we show that for a large class of networks possessing a positive homogeneity property, similar bounds may be obtained instead in terms of the norm of the product of weights. Our proof technique generalizes a recently proposed sampling argument, which allows us to demonstrate the existence of sparse approximants of positive homogeneous networks. This yields covering number bounds, which can be converted to generalization bounds for multi-class classification that are comparable to, and in certain cases improve upon, existing results in the literature. Finally, we investigate our sampling procedure empirically, which yields results consistent with our theory.

Anharmonicity Induced Supersolidity In Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

Supersolid, a fascinating quantum state of matter, features novel phenomena such as the non-classical rotational inertia and transport anomalies. It is a long standing issue of the coexistence of superfluidity and broken translational symmetry in condensed matter physics. By recent experimental advances to create tunable synthetic spin-orbit coupling in ultracold gases, such highly controllable atomic systems would provide new possibilities to access supersolidity with no counterpart in solids. Here we report that the combination of anharmonicity of trapping potential and spin-orbit coupling will provide a new paradigm to achieve supersolids. By means of imaginary time evolution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we demonstrate that a supersolid state can be found when considering a trapped Rashba-type spin-orbit coupled bosonic atoms loaded in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Furthermore, a skyrmion-anti-skyrmion lattice is associated with the appearance of such supersoildity, indicating the topological nontrivial properties of our proposed supersolids.

Cohomology dimension growth for Nakano $q$-semipositive line bundles

We study the cohomology with high tensor powers of Nakano $q$-semipositive line bundles on complex manifolds. We obtain the asymptotic estimates for the dimension of cohomology with high tensor powers of semipositive line bundles over q-convex manifolds and various possibly non-compact complex manifolds, in which the order of estimates are optimal. Besides, estimates for the modified Dirac operator on Nakano $q$-positive line bundle on almost complex manifolds are given.

A Plainified Composite Absorber Enabled by Vertical Interphase

Interface constitutes a significant volume fraction in nanocomposites, and it requires the ability to tune and tailor interfaces to tap the full potential of nanocomposites. However, the development and optimization of nanocomposites is currently restricted by the limited exploration and utilization of interfaces at different length scales. In this research, we have designed and introduced a relatively large-scale vertical interphase into carbon nanocomposites, in which the dielectric response and dispersion features in microwave frequency range are successfully adjusted. A remarkable relaxation process has been observed in vertical-interphase nanocomposites, showing sensitivity to both filler loading and the discrepancy in polarization ability across the interphase. Together with our analyses on dielectric spectra and relaxation processes, it is suggested that the intrinsic effect of vertical interphase lies in its ability to constrain and localize heterogeneous charges under external fields. Following this logic, systematic research is presented in this article affording to realize tunable frequency-dependent dielectric functionality by means of vertical interphase engineering. Overall, this study provides a novel method to utilize interfacial effects rationally. The research approach demonstrated here has great potential in developing microwave dielectric nanocomposites and devices with targeted or unique performance such as tunable broadband absorbers.

On the Generalization Gap in Reparameterizable Reinforcement Learning

Understanding generalization in reinforcement learning (RL) is a significant challenge, as many common assumptions of traditional supervised learning theory do not apply. We focus on the special class of reparameterizable RL problems, where the trajectory distribution can be decomposed using the reparametrization trick. For this problem class, estimating the expected return is efficient and the trajectory can be computed deterministically given peripheral random variables, which enables us to study reparametrizable RL using supervised learning and transfer learning theory. Through these relationships, we derive guarantees on the gap between the expected and empirical return for both intrinsic and external errors, based on Rademacher complexity as well as the PAC-Bayes bound. Our bound suggests the generalization capability of reparameterizable RL is related to multiple factors including "smoothness" of the environment transition, reward and agent policy function class. We also empirically verify the relationship between the generalization gap and these factors through simulations.

Three Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network Pruning with Regularization-Based Method

Despite enjoying extensive applications in video analysis, three-dimensional convolutional neural networks (3D CNNs)are restricted by their massive computation and storage consumption. To solve this problem, we propose a threedimensional regularization-based neural network pruning method to assign different regularization parameters to different weight groups based on their importance to the network. Further we analyze the redundancy and computation cost for each layer to determine the different pruning ratios. Experiments show that pruning based on our method can lead to 2x theoretical speedup with only 0.41% accuracy loss for 3DResNet18 and 3.28% accuracy loss for C3D. The proposed method performs favorably against other popular methods for model compression and acceleration.

Triplet Distillation for Deep Face Recognition

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved a great success in face recognition, which unfortunately comes at the cost of massive computation and storage consumption. Many compact face recognition networks are thus proposed to resolve this problem. Triplet loss is effective to further improve the performance of those compact models. However, it normally employs a fixed margin to all the samples, which neglects the informative similarity structures between different identities. In this paper, we propose an enhanced version of triplet loss, named triplet distillation, which exploits the capability of a teacher model to transfer the similarity information to a small model by adaptively varying the margin between positive and negative pairs. Experiments on LFW, AgeDB, and CPLFW datasets show the merits of our method compared to the original triplet loss.

Structured Pruning for Efficient ConvNets via Incremental Regularization

Parameter pruning is a promising approach for CNN compression and acceleration by eliminating redundant model parameters with tolerable performance degrade. Despite its effectiveness, existing regularization-based parameter pruning methods usually drive weights towards zero with large and constant regularization factors, which neglects the fragility of the expressiveness of CNNs, and thus calls for a more gentle regularization scheme so that the networks can adapt during pruning. To achieve this, we propose a new and novel regularization-based pruning method, named IncReg, to incrementally assign different regularization factors to different weights based on their relative importance. Empirical analysis on CIFAR-10 dataset verifies the merits of IncReg. Further extensive experiments with popular CNNs on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet datasets show that IncReg achieves comparable to even better results compared with state-of-the-arts. Our source codes and trained models are available here: https://github.com/mingsun-tse/caffe_increg.

Allocating Limited Resources to Protect a Massive Number of Targets using a Game Theoretic Model

Resource allocation is the process of optimizing the rare resources. In the area of security, how to allocate limited resources to protect a massive number of targets is especially challenging. This paper addresses this resource allocation issue by constructing a game theoretic model. A defender and an attacker are players and the interaction is formulated as a trade-off between protecting targets and consuming resources. The action cost which is a necessary role of consuming resource, is considered in the proposed model. Additionally, a bounded rational behavior model (Quantal Response, QR), which simulates a human attacker of the adversarial nature, is introduced to improve the proposed model. To validate the proposed model, we compare the different utility functions and resource allocation strategies. The comparison results suggest that the proposed resource allocation strategy performs better than others in the perspective of utility and resource effectiveness.

Despite its effectiveness, existing regularization-based parameter pruning methods usually drive weights towards zero with large and constant regularization factors, which neglects the fact that the expressiveness of CNNs is fragile and needs a more gentle way of regularization for the networks to adapt during pruning. Planar Hall effect in the Dirac semimetal PdTe2

We report the synthesis and magneto-transport measurements on the single crystal of Dirac semimetal PdTe$_2$. The de Haas-van Alphen oscillations with multiple frequencies have been clearly observed, from which the small effective masses and nontrivial Berry phase are extracted, implying the possible existence of the Dirac fermions in PdTe$_2$. The planar Hall effect and anisotropic longitudinal resistivity originating from the chiral anomaly and nontrivial Berry phase are observed, providing strong evidence for the nontrivial properties in PdTe$_2$. With the increase of temperature up to 150 K, planar Hall effect still remains. The possible origin of mismatch between experimental results and theoretical predictions is also discussed.

Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in topological semimetal CaAl4

We report the magneto-transport properties of CaAl$_4$ single crystals with $C2/m$ structure at low temperature. CaAl$_4$ exhibits large unsaturated magnetoresistance $\sim$3000$\%$ at 2.5 K and 14 T. The nonlinear Hall resistivity is observed, which indicates the multi-band feature. The first-principles calculations show the electron-hole compensation and the complex Fermi surface in CaAl$_4$, to which the two-band model with over-simplified carrier mobility can't completely apply. Evident quantum oscillations have been observed with B//c and B//ab configurations, from which the nontrivial Berry phase is extracted by the multi-band Lifshitz-Kosevich formula fitting. An electron-type quasi-2D Fermi surface is found by the angle-dependent Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, de Haas-van Alphen oscillations and the first-principles calculations. The calculations also elucidate that CaAl$_4$ owns a Dirac nodal line type band structure around the $Γ$ point in the $Z$-$Γ$-$L$ plane, which is protected by the mirror symmetry as well as the space inversion and time reversal symmetries. Once the spin-orbit coupling is included, the crossed nodal line opens a negligible gap (less than 3 meV). The open-orbit topology is also found in the electron-type Fermi surfaces, which is believed to help enhance the magnetoresistance observed.

The growth of dimension of cohomology of semipositive line bundles on Hermitian manifolds

In this paper, we study the dimension of cohomology of semipositive line bundles over Hermitian manifolds, and obtain an asymptotic estimate for the dimension of the space of harmonic $(0,q)$-forms with values in high tensor powers of a semipositive line bundle when the fundamental estimate holds. As applications, we estimate the dimension of cohomology of semipositive line bundles on $q$-convex manifolds, pseudo-convex domains, weakly $1$-complete manifolds and complete manifolds. We also obtain the estimate of cohomology on compact manifolds with semipositive line bundles endowed with a Hermitian metric with analytic singularities and the related vanishing theorems.

Identifying Generalization Properties in Neural Networks

While it has not yet been proven, empirical evidence suggests that model generalization is related to local properties of the optima which can be described via the Hessian. We connect model generalization with the local property of a solution under the PAC-Bayes paradigm. In particular, we prove that model generalization ability is related to the Hessian, the higher-order "smoothness" terms characterized by the Lipschitz constant of the Hessian, and the scales of the parameters. Guided by the proof, we propose a metric to score the generalization capability of the model, as well as an algorithm that optimizes the perturbed model accordingly.

Structured Probabilistic Pruning for Convolutional Neural Network Acceleration

In this paper, we propose a novel progressive parameter pruning method for Convolutional Neural Network acceleration, named Structured Probabilistic Pruning (SPP), which effectively prunes weights of convolutional layers in a probabilistic manner. Unlike existing deterministic pruning approaches, where unimportant weights are permanently eliminated, SPP introduces a pruning probability for each weight, and pruning is guided by sampling from the pruning probabilities. A mechanism is designed to increase and decrease pruning probabilities based on importance criteria in the training process. Experiments show that, with 4x speedup, SPP can accelerate AlexNet with only 0.3% loss of top-5 accuracy and VGG-16 with 0.8% loss of top-5 accuracy in ImageNet classification. Moreover, SPP can be directly applied to accelerate multi-branch CNN networks, such as ResNet, without specific adaptations. Our 2x speedup ResNet-50 only suffers 0.8% loss of top-5 accuracy on ImageNet. We further show the effectiveness of SPP on transfer learning tasks.

Interface Probing by Dielectric Frequency Dispersion in Carbon Nanocomposites

Interfaces remain one of the major issues in limiting the understanding and designing polymer nanocomposites due to their complexity and pivotal role in determining the ultimate composites properties. In this study, we take multi-walled carbon nanotubes/silicone rubber nanocomposites as a representative example, and have for the first time studied the correlation between high-frequency dielectric dispersion and static/dynamic interfacial characteristics. We have found that the interface together with other meso-structural parameters (volume fraction, dispersion, agglomeration) play decisive role in formulating the dielectric patterns. The calculation of the relaxation times affords the relative importance of interfacial polarization to dipolar polarization in resultant dielectric relaxation. Dielectric measurements coupled with cyclic loading further reveals the remarkable capability of dielectric frequency dispersion in capturing the evolution of interfacial properties, such as a particular interface reconstruction process occurred to the surfactant-modified samples. All these results demonstrate that high-frequency dielectric spectroscopy is instrumental to probing both static and dynamic meso-structural characteristics, especially effective for the composites with relative weak interfaces which remains a mission impossible for many other techniques. The insights provided here based on the analyses of dielectric frequency dispersion will pave the way for optimized design and precise engineering of meso-structure in polymer nanocomposites.

Vortex states and spin textures of rotating spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a toroidal trap

We consider the ground-state properties of Rashba spin-orbit-coupled pseudo-spin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a rotating two-dimensional (2D) toroidal trap. In the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the increasing rotation frequency enhances the creation of giant vortices for the initially miscible BECs, while it can lead to the formation of semiring density patterns with irregular hidden vortex structures for the initially immiscible BECs. Without rotation, strong 2D isotropic SOC yields a heliciform-stripe phase for the initially immiscible BECs. Combined effects of rotation, SOC, and interatomic interactions on the vortex structures and typical spin textures of the ground state of the system are discussed systematically. In particular, for fixed rotation frequency above the critical value, the increasing isotropic SOC favors a visible vortex ring in each component which is accompanied by a hidden giant vortex plus a (several) hidden vortex ring(s) in the central region. In the case of 1D anisotropic SOC, large SOC strength results in the generation of hidden linear vortex string and the transition from initial phase separation (phase mixing) to phase mixing (phase separation). Furthermore, the peculiar spin textures including skyrmion lattice, skyrmion pair and skyrmion string are revealed in this system.

Spin filtering in transition-metal phthalocyanine molecules from first principles

Using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory and the nonequilibrium Green function formalism, we studied the spin transport through metal-phthalocyanine (MPc, M=Ni, Fe, Co, Mn, Cr) molecules connected to aurum nanowire electrodes. We found that the MnPc, FePc, and CrPc molecular devices exhibit a perfect spin filtering effect compared to CoPc and NiPc. Moreover, negative differential resistance appears in FePc molecular devices. The transmission coefficients at different bias voltages were further presented to understand this phenomenon. These results would be useful in designing devices for future nanotechnology.
