Multiplicative trace and spectrum preservers on stochastic matrices

We characterize maps $\phi_i: \mathcal{S} \to \mathcal{S}$, $i=1, \ldots, m$ and $m\ge 1$, that have the multiplicative spectrum or trace preserving property: \begin{eqnarray*} \textrm{spec} (\phi_1(A_1)\cdots \phi_m(A_m)) &=& \textrm{spec} (A_1\cdots A_m),\quad\text{or}\quad \textrm{tr} (\phi_1(A_1)\cdots \phi_m(A_m)) &=& \textrm{tr} (A_1\cdots A_m), \end{eqnarray*} where $\mathcal{S}$ is the set of $n\times n$ doubly stochastic, row stochastic, or column stochastic matrices, or the space spanned by one of these sets. Linearity is assumed when $m=1$. We show that every stochastic matrix contains a real doubly stochastic component that carries the spectral information. In consequence, the multiplicative spectrum or trace preservers on these sets $ \mathcal{S} $ are linked to the corresponding preservers on the space of doubly stochastic matrices. Moreover, when $m\ge 3$, multiplicative trace preservers always coincide with multiplicative spectrum preservers.

Alpha-Z divergence unveils further distinct phenotypic traits of human brain connectivity fingerprint

The accurate identification of individuals from functional connectomes (FCs) is critical for advancing individualized assessments in neuropsychiatric research. Traditional methods, such as Pearson's correlation, have limitations in capturing the complex, non-Euclidean geometry of FC data, leading to suboptimal performance in identification performance. Recent developments have introduced geodesic distance as a more robust metric; however, its performance is highly sensitive to regularization choices, which vary by spatial scale and task condition. To address these challenges, we propose a novel divergence-based distance metric, the Alpha-Z Bures-Wasserstein divergence, which provides a more flexible and geometry-aware framework for FC comparison. Unlike prior methods, our approach does not require meticulous parameter tuning and maintains strong identification performance across multiple task conditions and spatial resolutions. We evaluate our approach against both traditional (e.g., Euclidean, Pearson) and state-of-the-art manifold-based distances (e.g., affine-invariant, log-Euclidean, Bures-Wasserstein), and systematically investigate how varying regularization strengths affect geodesic distance performance on the Human Connectome Project dataset. Our results show that the proposed method significantly improves identification rates over traditional and geodesic distances, particularly when optimized regularization is applied, and especially in high-dimensional settings where matrix rank deficiencies degrade existing metrics. We further validate its generalizability across resting-state and task-based fMRI, using multiple parcellation schemes. These findings suggest that the new divergence provides a more reliable and generalizable framework for functional connectivity analysis, offering enhanced sensitivity in linking FC patterns to cognitive and behavioral outcomes.

Volume-optimal persistence homological scaffolds of hemodynamic networks covary with MEG theta-alpha aperiodic dynamics

Higher-order properties of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) induced connectivity have been shown to unravel many exclusive topological and dynamical insights beyond pairwise interactions. Nonetheless, whether these fMRI-induced higher-order properties play a role in disentangling other neuroimaging modalities' insights remains largely unexplored and poorly understood. In this work, by analyzing fMRI data from the Human Connectome Project Young Adult dataset using persistent homology, we discovered that the volume-optimal persistence homological scaffolds of fMRI-based functional connectomes exhibited conservative topological reconfigurations from the resting state to attentional task-positive state. Specifically, while reflecting the extent to which each cortical region contributed to functional cycles following different cognitive demands, these reconfigurations were constrained such that the spatial distribution of cavities in the connectome is relatively conserved. Most importantly, such level of contributions covaried with powers of aperiodic activities mostly within the theta-alpha (4-12 Hz) band measured by magnetoencephalography (MEG). This comprehensive result suggests that fMRI-induced hemodynamics and MEG theta-alpha aperiodic activities are governed by the same functional constraints specific to each cortical morpho-structure. Methodologically, our work paves the way toward an innovative computing paradigm in multimodal neuroimaging topological learning.

Order Relations of the Wasserstein mean and the spectral geometric mean

On the space of positive definite matrices, several operator means are popular and have been studied extensively. In this paper, we investigate the near order and the L\"owner order relations on the curves defined by the Wasserstein mean and the spectral geometric mean. We show that the near order $\preceq $ is stronger than the eigenvalue entrywise order, and that $A\natural_t B \preceq A\diamond_t B$ for $t\in [0,1]$. We prove the monotonicity properties of the curves originated from the Wasserstein mean and the spectral geometric mean in terms of the near order. The L\"owner order properties of the Wasserstein mean and the spectral geometric mean are also explored.

Extensions of Yamamoto-Nayak's Theorem

A result of Nayak asserts that $\underset{m\to \infty}\lim |A^m|^{1/m}$ exists for each $n\times n$ complex matrix $A$, where $|A| = (A^*A)^{1/2}$, and the limit is given in terms of the spectral decomposition. We extend the result of Nayak, namely, we prove that the limit of $\underset{m\to \infty}\lim |BA^mC|^{1/m}$ exists for any $n\times n$ complex matrices $A$, $B$, and $C$ where $B$ and $C$ are nonsingular; the limit is obtained and is independent of $B$. We then provide generalization in the context of real semisimple Lie groups.

Barycenter Estimation of Positive Semi-Definite Matrices with Bures-Wasserstein Distance

Brain-computer interface (BCI) builds a bridge between human brain and external devices by recording brain signals and translating them into commands for devices to perform the user's imagined action. The core of the BCI system is the classifier that labels the input signals as the user's imagined action. The classifiers that directly classify covariance matrices using Riemannian geometry are widely used not only in BCI domain but also in a variety of fields including neuroscience, remote sensing, biomedical imaging, etc. However, the existing Affine-Invariant Riemannian-based methods treat covariance matrices as positive definite while they are indeed positive semi-definite especially for high dimensional data. Besides, the Affine-Invariant Riemannian-based barycenter estimation algorithms become time consuming, not robust, and have convergence issues when the dimension and number of covariance matrices become large. To address these challenges, in this paper, we establish the mathematical foundation for Bures-Wasserstein distance and propose new algorithms to estimate the barycenter of positive semi-definite matrices efficiently and robustly. Both theoretical and computational aspects of Bures-Wasserstein distance and barycenter estimation algorithms are discussed. With extensive simulations, we comprehensively investigate the accuracy, efficiency, and robustness of the barycenter estimation algorithms coupled with Bures-Wasserstein distance. The results show that Bures-Wasserstein based barycenter estimation algorithms are more efficient and robust.

Linear k-power preservers and trace of power-product preservers

Let $V$ be the set of $n\times n$ complex or real general matrices, Hermitian matrices, symmetric matrices, positive definite (resp. semi-definite) matrices, diagonal matrices, or upper triangular matrices. Fix $k\in \mathbb{Z}\setminus \{0, 1\}$. We characterize linear maps $\psi:V\to V$ that satisfy $\psi(A^k)=\psi(A)^k$ on an open neighborhood $S$ of $I_n$ in $V$. The $k$-power preservers are necessarily $k$-potent preservers, and the case $k=2$ corresponds to Jordan homomorphisms. Applying the results, we characterize maps $\phi,\psi:V\to V$ that satisfy "$ \operatorname{tr}(\phi(A)\psi(B)^k)=\operatorname{tr}(AB^k)$ for all $A\in V$, $B\in S$, and $\psi$ is linear" or "$ \operatorname{tr}(\phi(A)\psi(B)^k)=\operatorname{tr}(AB^k)$ for all $A, B\in S$ and both $\phi$ and $\psi$ are linear." The characterizations systematically extend existing results in literature, and they have many applications in areas like quantum information theory. Some structural theorems and power series over matrices are widely used in our characterizations.

Maps preserving trace of products of matrices

We prove the linearity and injectivity of two maps $\phi_1$ and $\phi_2$ on certain subsets of $M_n$ that satisfy $\operatorname{tr}(\phi_1(A)\phi_2(B))=\operatorname{tr}(AB)$. We apply it to characterize maps $\phi_i:\mathcal{S}\to \mathcal{S}$ ($i=1, \ldots, m$) satisfying $$\operatorname{tr} (\phi_1(A_1)\cdots \phi_m(A_m))=\operatorname{tr} (A_1\cdots A_m)$$ in which $\mathcal{S}$ is the set of $n$-by-$n$ general, Hermitian, or symmetric matrices for $m\ge 3$, or positive definite or diagonal matrices for $m\ge 2$. The real versions are also given.

On triangular similarity of nilpotent triangular matrices

Let $B_n$ (resp. $U_n$, $N_n$) be the set of $n\times n$ nonsingular (resp. unit, nilpotent) upper triangular matrices. We use a novel approach to explore the $B_n$-similarity orbits in $N_n$. The Belitski\u{\i}'s canonical form of $A\in N_n$ under $B_n$-similarity is in $QU_n$ where $Q$ is the subpermutation such that $A\in B_n QB_n$. Using graph representations and $U_n$-similarity actions stablizing $QU_n$, we obtain new properties of the Belitski\u{\i}'s canonical forms and present an efficient algorithm to find the Belitski\u{\i}'s canonical forms in $N_n$. As consequences, we construct new Belitski\u{\i}'s canonical forms in all $N_n$'s, list all Belitski\u{\i}'s canonical forms for $n=7, 8$, and show examples of 3-nilpotent Belitski\u{\i}'s canonical forms in $N_n$ with arbitrary numbers of parameters up to $\operatorname{O}(n^2)$.

Trace and determinant preserving maps of matrices

Suppose a map $\phi$ on the set of positive definite matrices satisfies $\det(A+B)=\det(\phi(A)+\phi(B))$. Then we have $${\rm tr}(AB^{-1}) = {\rm tr}(\phi(A){\phi(B)}^{-1}).$$ Through this viewpoint, we show that $\phi$ is of the form $\phi(A)= M^*AM$ or $\phi(A)= M^*A^tM$ for some invertible matrix $M$ with $\det (M^*M)=1$. We also characterize the map $\phi: \mathcal{S} \rightarrow \mathcal{S}$ preserving the determinant of convex combinations in $\mathcal{S}$ by using similar method. Here $\mathcal{S}$ can be the set of complex matrices, positive definite matrices, symmetric matrices, and upper triangular matrices.

Derivations of Lie Algebras of Dominant Upper Triangular Ladder Matrices

We explicitly describe the Lie algebras $M_L$ of ladder matrices in $M_n$ associate with dominant upper triangular ladders $L$, and completely characterize the derivations of these $M_L$ over a field $F$ with $char(F) \neq 2$. We also completely characterize the derivations of Lie algebras $[M_L, M_L]$ where $L$ are strongly dominant upper triangular ladders and $char(F) \neq 2, 3$.

Symmetrization of Principal Minors and Cycle-Sums

We solve the Symmetrized Principal Minor Assignment Problem, that is we show how to determine if for a given vector $v\in \mathbb{C}^{n}$ there is an $n\times n$ matrix that has all $i\times i$ principal minors equal to $v_{i}$. We use a special isomorphism (a non-linear change of coordinates to cycle-sums) that simplifies computation and reveals hidden structure. We use the symmetries that preserve symmetrized principal minors and cycle-sums to treat 3 cases: symmetric, skew-symmetric and general square matrices. We describe the matrices that have such symmetrized principal minors as well as the ideal of relations among symmetrized principal minors / cycle-sums. We also connect the resulting algebraic varieties of symmetrized principal minors to tangential and secant varieties, and Eulerian polynomials.

Direct sums of zero product determined algebras

We reformulate the definition of a zero product determined algebra in terms of tensor products and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for an algebra to be zero product determined. These conditions allow us to prove that the direct sum \bigoplus_{i \in I} A_i of algebras for any index set I is zero product determined if and only if each of the component algebras A_i is zero product determined. As an application, every parabolic subalgebra of a finite-dimensional reductive Lie algebra, over an algebraically-closed field of characteristic zero, is zero product determined. In particular, every such reductive Lie algebra is zero product determined.

Symmetric Subgroup Actions on Isotropic Grassmannians

Let G be the group preserving a nondegenerate sesquilinear form on a vector space V, and H a symmetric subgroup of G of the type G1 x G2. We explicitly parameterize the H-orbits in the Grassmannian of r-dimensional isotropic subspaces of V by a complete set of H-invariants. We describe the Bruhat order in terms of the majorization relationship over a diagram of these H-invariants. The inclusion order, the stabilizer, the orbit dimension, the open H-orbits, the decompositions of an H orbit into H\cap G_0 and H_0 orbits are also explicitly described.

Some Extensions of Witt's Theorem

We extend Witt's theorem to several kinds of simultaneous isometries of subspaces. We determine sufficient and necessary conditions for the extension of an isometry of subspaces $ϕ:E\to E'$ to an isometry $ϕ_V:V\to V'$ that also sends a given subspace to another, or a given self-dual flag to another, or a Witt's decomposition to another and a special self-dual flag to another. We also determine sufficient and necessary conditions for the isometry of generic flags or the simultaneous isometry of (subspace, self-dual flag) pairs.
