IRS-Enhanced Wideband MU-MISO-OFDM Communication Systems

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is considered as an enabling technology for future wireless communication systems since it can intelligently change the wireless environment to improve the communication performance. In this paper, an IRS-enhanced wideband multiuser multi-input single-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MU-MISO-OFDM) system is investigated. We aim to jointly design the transmit beamformer and the reflection of IRS to maximize the average sum-rate over all subcarriers. With the aid of the relationship between sum-rate maximization and mean square error (MSE) minimization, an efficient joint beamformer and IRS design algorithm is developed. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed algorithm can offer significant average sum-rate enhancement, which confirms the effectiveness of the use of the IRS for wideband wireless communication systems.

An End-to-End Encrypted Neural Network for Gradient Updates Transmission in Federated Learning

Federated learning is a distributed learning method to train a shared model by aggregating the locally-computed gradient updates. In federated learning, bandwidth and privacy are two main concerns of gradient updates transmission. This paper proposes an end-to-end encrypted neural network for gradient updates transmission. This network first encodes the input gradient updates to a lower-dimension space in each client, which significantly mitigates the pressure of data communication in federated learning. The encoded gradient updates are directly recovered as a whole, i.e. the aggregated gradient updates of the trained model, in the decoding layers of the network on the server. In this way, gradient updates encrypted in each client are not only prevented from interception during communication, but also unknown to the server. Based on the encrypted neural network, a novel federated learning framework is designed in real applications. Experimental results show that the proposed network can effectively achieve two goals, privacy protection and data compression, under a little sacrifice of the model accuracy in federated learning.

Frequency Observations and Statistic Analysis of Worldwide Main Power Grids Using FNET/GridEye

With the increasing renewable energy sources, concerns about how renewable energy sources impact frequency have risen. There are few reports regarding power frequency status in worldwide main power grids and what are differences of frequency status between power grids in mainland and island. FNET/GridEye, a wide-area measurement system collecting frequency and phase angle data at the distribution level, provides an opportunity to observe and study the power frequency in different power grids over the world. In this paper, 13 different power grids, spreading at different mainland and islands over the world, are observed and compared. A more detail statistical analysis was conducted for typical power grids in three different places, e.g., U.S Eastern Interconnection (EI), Egypt, and Japan. The probability functions of frequency based on the measured data are calculated. The distributions of frequency in different power grids fall into two categories, e.g., single-peak distribution and multi-peak distribution. Furthermore, a meaningful insight that the single-peak distributions of the frequency almost follow the normal distribution is found. The frequency observations and statistic analysis of worldwide main power grids using FNET/GridEye could help the power system operators understand the frequency statistical characteristic more deeply.

Photometric and Kinematic Misalignments and Their Evolution Among Fast and Slow Rotators in the Illustris Simulation

We use the Illustris simulation to study the distributions of ellipticities and kinematic misalignments of galactic projections, as well as the intrinsic shapes and rotation of the simulated galaxies. Our results for the projections of galaxies display clear trends of an overall increase of kinematic misalignment and a slight decrease of ellipticity for fast rotators with increasing masses, while revealing no clear distinction between slow rotators of different mass. It is also found that the number of very slow rotators with large ellipticities is much larger than found in observations. The intrinsic properties of the galaxies are then analysed. The results for the intrinsic shapes of the galaxies are mostly consistent with previous results inferred from observational data. The distributions of intrinsic misalignment of the galaxies suggest that some of the galaxies produced by Illustris have significant rotation around their medium axes. Further analysis reveals that most of these galaxies display signs of non-equilibrium. We then study the evolution of the intrinsic misalignments and shapes of three specific Illustris galaxies, which we consider as typical ones, along the main progenitor line of their merger trees, revealing how mergers influence the intrinsic shapes and kinematics: the spin axis in general stays close to the shortest axis, and tends to quickly relax to such an equilibrium state within a few dynamical times of the galaxy after major perturbations; triaxiality and intrinsic flatness in general decrease with time, however, sometimes increases occur that are clearly seen to correlate with major merger events.

Towards Document Image Quality Assessment: A Text Line Based Framework and A Synthetic Text Line Image Dataset

Since the low quality of document images will greatly undermine the chances of success in automatic text recognition and analysis, it is necessary to assess the quality of document images uploaded in online business process, so as to reject those images of low quality. In this paper, we attempt to achieve document image quality assessment and our contributions are twofold. Firstly, since document image quality assessment is more interested in text, we propose a text line based framework to estimate document image quality, which is composed of three stages: text line detection, text line quality prediction, and overall quality assessment. Text line detection aims to find potential text lines with a detector. In the text line quality prediction stage, the quality score is computed for each text line with a CNN-based prediction model. The overall quality of document images is finally assessed with the ensemble of all text line quality. Secondly, to train the prediction model, a large-scale dataset, comprising 52,094 text line images, is synthesized with diverse attributes. For each text line image, a quality label is computed with a piece-wise function. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, comprehensive experiments are evaluated on two popular document image quality assessment benchmarks. Our framework significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by large margins on the large and complicated dataset.

Hybrid beamforming with dynamic subarrays and low-resolution PSs for mmWave MU-MISO systems

Analog/digital hybrid beamforming architectures with large-scale antenna arrays have been widely considered in millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems because they can address the tradeoff between performance and hardware efficiency compared with traditional fully-digital beamforming. Most of the prior work on hybrid beamforming focused on fullyconnected architecture or partially-connected scheme with fixedsubarrays, in which the analog beamformers are usually realized by infinite-resolution phase shifters (PSs). In this paper, we introduce a novel hybrid beamforming architecture with dynamic subarrays and hardware-efficient low-resolution PSs for mmWave multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems. By dynamically connecting each RF chain to a non-overlap subarray via a switch network and PSs, we can exploit multiple-antenna and multiuser diversities to mitigate the performance loss due to the use of practical low-resolution PSs. An iterative hybrid beamformer design algorithm is first proposed based on fractional programming (FP), aiming at maximizing the sum-rate performance of the MU-MISO system. In an effort to reduce the complexity, we also present a simple heuristic hybrid beamformer design algorithm for the dynamic subarray scheme. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed hybrid beamforming architecture with dynamic subarrays and low-resolution PSs compared to existing fixed-subarray schemes.

Evaluating the ability of triaxial Schwarzschild modelling to estimate properties of galaxies from the Illustris simulation

We evaluate the capabilities of Schwarzschild's orbit-superposition method by applying it to galaxies from the large scale, high resolution Illustris simulation. Nine early-type galaxies with a range of triaxiality are selected, and we create mock integral field unit data for five line-of-sight projections of each galaxy. Each of the 45 mock data sets is taken as an independent observed galaxy. Using van den Bosch's 2008 triaxial Schwarzschild implementation, we assess model estimates of various galaxy properties, covering mass profiles, intrinsic shapes, stellar orbit distributions and velocity anisotropies. Total mass within $\overline{R_{\rm e}}$ is recovered well with average deviations within $\pm15$ percent. Stellar mass is underestimated by $\sim24$ percent and dark matter overestimated by $\sim38$ percent (assuming an NFW dark matter profile and allowing for degeneracy between stellar mass and dark matter mass). Using a gNFW profile, these values improve to $\sim13$ percent for stellar mass and $\sim18$ percent for dark matter. Axis ratio estimates show a moderate bias of $Δ(b/a)=0.07$ and $Δ(c/a)=0.14$ ($a\ge b\ge c$). Distributions of the orbit circularities $λ_z$ and $λ_x$, representing rotation about the minor and major axes, are well reconstructed. Separating orbits into thermal categories, our models match the average fractions of these categories to within $10$ percent. Velocity anisotropy is well estimated with values matching in the inner regions but becoming slightly radially biased in the outer regions. Overall, the galaxy property estimates we obtained using Schwarzschild modelling are not implausible and are representative of the simulated galaxies we modelled.

SDSS--IV MaNGA : The Inner Density Slopes of nearby galaxies

We derive the mass weighted total density slopes within the effective (half-light) radius, $γ'$, for more than 2000 nearby galaxies from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey using Jeans-anisotropic-models applied to IFU observations. Our galaxies span a wide range of the stellar mass ($10^9$ $M_{\rm \odot}< M_* < 10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$) and the velocity dispersion (30 km/s $< σ_v <$ 300 km/s). We find that for galaxies with velocity dispersion $σ_v>100$ km/s, the density slope has a mean value $\langle γ^{\prime} \rangle = 2.24$ and a dispersion $σ_γ=0.22$, almost independent of velocity dispersion. A clear turn over in the $γ'-σ_v$ relation is present at $σ\sim 100$ km/s, below which the density slope decreases rapidly with $σ_v$. Our analysis shows that a large fraction of dwarf galaxies (below $M_* = 10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$) have total density slopes shallower than 1, which implies that they may reside in cold dark matter halos with shallow density slopes. We compare our results with that of galaxies in hydrodynamical simulations of EAGLE, Illustris and IllustrisTNG projects, and find all simulations predict shallower density slopes for massive galaxies with high $σ_v$. Finally, we explore the dependence of $γ'$ on the positions of galaxies in halos, namely centrals vs. satellites, and find that for the same velocity dispersion, the amplitude of $γ'$ is higher for satellite galaxies by about 0.1.

A Hardware-Efficient Hybrid Beamforming Solution for mmWave MIMO Systems

In millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems, existing hybrid beamforming solutions generally require a large number of high-resolution phase shifters (PSs) to realize analog beamformers, which still suffer from high hardware complexity and power consumption. Targeting at this problem, this article introduces a novel hardware-efficient hybrid precoding/combining architecture, which only employs a limited number of simple phase over-samplers (POSs) and a switch (SW) network to achieve maximum hardware efficiency while maintaining satisfactory spectral efficiency performance. The POS can be realized by a simple circuit and simultaneously outputs several parallel signals with different phases. With the aid of a simple switch network, the analog precoder/combiner is implemented by feeding the signals with appropriate phases to antenna arrays or RF chains. We analyze the design challenges of this POS-SW-based hybrid beamforming architecture and present potential solutions to the fundamental issues, especially the precoder/combiner design and the channel estimation strategy. Simulation results demonstrate that this hardware-efficient structure can achieve comparable spectral efficiency but much higher energy efficiency than that of the traditional structures.

Orbit properties of massive prolate galaxies in the Illustris simulation

We explore orbit properties of 35 prolate-triaxial galaxies selected from the Illustris cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. We present a detailed study of their orbit families, and also analyse relations between the relative abundance of the orbit families and the spin parameter, triaxiality, the ratio of the angular momentum and the baryon fraction. We find that box orbits dominate the orbit structure for most prolate-triaxial galaxies, especially in the central region. The fraction of irregular orbits in the prolate-triaxial galaxies is small, and it increases with galaxy radius. Both the x-tube and z-tube orbits are important in prolate-triaxial galaxies, especially in the outer regions. The fraction of box orbits for prolate-triaxial galaxies ($0.7<T<1$) decreases with the triaxiality of the stars, while the fraction of x-tube orbits increases with the triaxiality for a given axis ratio. The fraction of box orbits increases and the fractions of x-tube and z-tube orbits weakly decrease with increasing baryon fraction. These results help to understand the structure of prolate-triaxial galaxies and provide cross-checks for constructing dynamical models of prolate-triaxial galaxies by using the Schwarzschild or the Made-to-Measure methods.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: pattern speeds of barred galaxies

The MaNGA project has obtained IFU data for several thousand nearby galaxies, including barred galaxies. With the two dimensional spectral and kinematic information provided by IFUs, we can measure the pattern speed of a barred galaxy, which determines the bar dynamics. We apply the non-parametric method proposed by Tremaine \& Weinberg to estimate the bar pattern speed for 53 barred galaxies, making this the largest sample studied so far in this way. Our sample is selected from the MaNGA first public data release as part of SDSS Data Release 13 according mainly to the axis ratio and position angle difference between the bar and disc, while kinematic data is from the later SDSS Data Release 14. We have used both the photometric position angle from the photometric image and the kinematic position angle from the stellar velocity map to derive the pattern speed. Combining three independent bar length measurements and the circular velocity from Jeans Anisotropic modelling (JAM), we also determine the dimensionless ratio $\cal{R}$ of the corotation radius to the bar length. We find that the galaxy's position angle is the main uncertainty in determining the bar pattern speed. The kinematic position angle leads to fewer ultrafast bars than the photometric position angle, and this could be due to the method of measuring the kinematic position angle. We study the dependence of $\cal{R}$ values on galaxy properties such as the dark matter fraction from JAM modelling and the stellar age and metallicity from stellar population synthesis (SPS). A positive correlation between the bar length and bar strength is found: the longer the bar, the stronger the bar. However, no other significant correlations are found. This may result from errors in deriving the $\cal{R}$ values or from the complex formation and slowdown processes of galactic bars.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: The intrinsic shape of slow rotator early-type galaxies

By inverting the distributions of galaxies' apparent ellipticities and misalignment angles (measured around the projected half-light radius $R_{\rm e}$) between their photometric and kinematic axes, we study the intrinsic shape distribution of 189 slow rotator early-type galaxies with stellar masses $2\times 10^{11} M_{\odot}<M_\ast<2\times 10^{12} M_{\odot}$, extracted from a sample of about 2200 galaxies with integral-field stellar kinematics from the DR14 of the SDSS-IV MaNGA IFU survey. Thanks to the large sample of slow rotators, Graham+18 showed that there is clear structure in the misalignment angle distribution, with two peaks at both $0^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ misalignment (characteristic of oblate and prolate rotation respectively). Here we invert the observed distribution from Graham+18. The large sample allows us to go beyond the known fact that slow rotators are weakly triaxial and to place useful constraints on their intrinsic triaxiality distribution (around $1R_{\rm e}$) for the first time. The shape inversion is generally non-unique. However, we find that, for a wide set of model assumptions, the observed distribution clearly requires a dominant triaxial-oblate population. For some of our models, the data suggest a hint for a minor triaxial-prolate population, but a dominant prolate population is ruled out.

CG-DIQA: No-reference Document Image Quality Assessment Based on Character Gradient

Document image quality assessment (DIQA) is an important and challenging problem in real applications. In order to predict the quality scores of document images, this paper proposes a novel no-reference DIQA method based on character gradient, where the OCR accuracy is used as a ground-truth quality metric. Character gradient is computed on character patches detected with the maximally stable extremal regions (MSER) based method. Character patches are essentially significant to character recognition and therefore suitable for use in estimating document image quality. Experiments on a benchmark dataset show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in estimating the quality score of document images.

Two-Layer Mixture Network Ensemble for Apparel Attributes Classification

Recognizing apparel attributes has recently drawn great interest in the computer vision community. Methods based on various deep neural networks have been proposed for image classification, which could be applied to apparel attributes recognition. An interesting problem raised is how to ensemble these methods to further improve the accuracy. In this paper, we propose a two-layer mixture framework for ensemble different networks. In the first layer of this framework, two types of ensemble learning methods, bagging and boosting, are separately applied. Different from traditional methods, our bagging process makes use of the whole training set, not random subsets, to train each model in the ensemble, where several differentiated deep networks are used to promote model variance. To avoid the bias of small-scale samples, the second layer only adopts bagging to mix the results obtained with bagging and boosting in the first layer. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed mixture framework outperforms any individual network model or either independent ensemble method in apparel attributes classification.

Recovering stellar population parameters via two full-spectrum fitting algorithms in the absence of model uncertainties

Using mock spectra based on Vazdekis/MILES library fitted within the wavelength region 3600-7350Å, we analyze the bias and scatter on the resulting physical parameters induced by the choice of fitting algorithms and observational uncertainties, but avoid effects of those model uncertainties. We consider two full-spectrum fitting codes: pPXF and STARLIGHT, in fitting for stellar population age, metallicity, mass-to-light ratio, and dust extinction. With pPXF we find that both the bias in the population parameters and the scatter in the recovered logarithmic values follows the expected trend. The bias increases for younger ages and systematically makes recovered ages older, $M_*/L_r$ larger and metallicities lower than the true values. For reference, at S/N=30, and for the worst case ($t=10^8$yr), the bias is 0.06 dex in $M_*/L_r$, 0.03 dex in both age and [M/H]. There is no significant dependence on either E(B-V) or the shape of the error spectrum. Moreover, the results are consistent for both our 1-SSP and 2-SSP tests. With the STARLIGHT algorithm, we find trends similar to pPXF, when the input E(B-V)<0.2 mag. However, with larger input E(B-V), the biases of the output parameter do not converge to zero even at the highest S/N and are strongly affected by the shape of the error spectra. This effect is particularly dramatic for youngest age, for which all population parameters can be strongly different from the input values, with significantly underestimated dust extinction and [M/H], and larger ages and $M_*/L_r$. Results degrade when moving from our 1-SSP to the 2-SSP tests. The STARLIGHT convergence to the true values can be improved by increasing Markov Chains and annealing loops to the "slow mode". For the same input spectrum, pPXF is about two order of magnitudes faster than STARLIGHT's "default mode" and about three order of magnitude faster than STARLIGHT's "slow mode".

SDSS-IV MaNGA: A Distinct Mass Distribution Explored in Slow-Rotating Early-type Galaxies

We study the radial acceleration relation (RAR) for early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the SDSS MaNGA MPL5 dataset. The complete ETG sample show a slightly offset RAR from the relation reported by McGaugh et al. (2016) at the low-acceleration end; we find that the deviation is due to the fact that the slow rotators show a systematically higher acceleration relation than the McGaugh's RAR, while the fast rotators show a consistent acceleration relation to McGaugh's RAR. There is a 1σsignificant difference between the acceleration relations of the fast and slow rotators, suggesting that the acceleration relation correlates with the galactic spins, and that the slow rotators may have a different mass distribution compared with fast rotators and late-type galaxies. We suspect that the acceleration relation deviation of slow rotators may be attributed to more galaxy merger events, which would disrupt the original spins and correlated distributions of baryons and dark matter orbits in galaxies.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: Stellar angular momentum of about 2300 galaxies: unveiling the bimodality of massive galaxy properties

We measure $λ_{R_e}$, a proxy for galaxy specific stellar angular momentum within one effective radius, and the ellipticity, $ε$, for about 2300 galaxies of all morphological types observed with integral field spectroscopy as part of the MaNGA survey, the largest such sample to date. We use the $(λ_{R_e}, ε)$ diagram to separate early-type galaxies into fast and slow rotators. We also visually classify each galaxy according to its optical morphology and two-dimensional stellar velocity field. Comparing these classifications to quantitative $λ_{R_e}$ measurements reveals tight relationships between angular momentum and galaxy structure. In order to account for atmospheric seeing, we use realistic models of galaxy kinematics to derive a general approximate analytic correction for $λ_{R_e}$. Thanks to the size of the sample and the large number of massive galaxies, we unambiguously detect a clear bimodality in the $(λ_{R_e}, ε)$ diagram which may result from fundamental differences in galaxy assembly history. There is a sharp secondary density peak inside the region of the diagram with low $λ_{R_e}$ and $ε< 0.4$, previously suggested as the definition for slow rotators. Most of these galaxies are visually classified as non-regular rotators and have high velocity dispersion. The intrinsic bimodality must be stronger, as it tends to be smoothed by noise and inclination. The large sample of slow rotators allows us for the first time to unveil a secondary peak at +/-90 degrees in their distribution of the misalignments between the photometric and kinematic position angles. We confirm that genuine slow rotators start appearing above a stellar mass of 2\times10^{11} M_{\odot}$ where a significant number of high-mass fast rotators also exist.
