Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces 2.0: Beyond Diagonal Phase Shift Matrices

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been envisioned as a promising technique to enable and enhance future wireless communications due to its potential to engineer the wireless channels in a cost-effective manner. Extensive research attention has been drawn to the use of conventional RIS 1.0 with diagonal phase shift matrices, where each RIS element is connected to its own load to ground but not connected to other elements. However, the simple architecture of RIS 1.0 limits its flexibility of manipulating passive beamforming. To fully exploit the benefits of RIS, in this paper, we introduce RIS 2.0 beyond diagonal phase shift matrices, namely beyond diagonal RIS (BD-RIS). We first explain the modeling of BD-RIS based on the scattering parameter network analysis and classify BD-RIS by the mathematical characteristics of the scattering matrix, supported modes, and architectures. Then, we provide simulations to evaluate the sum-rate performance with different modes/architectures of BD-RIS. We summarize the benefits of BD-RIS in providing high flexibility in wave manipulation, enlarging coverage, facilitating the deployment, and requiring low complexity in resolution bit and element numbers. Inspired by the benefits of BD-RIS, we also discuss potential applications of BD-RIS in various wireless systems. Finally, we list key challenges in modeling, designing, and implementing BD-RIS in practice and point to possible future research directions for BD-RIS.

Dynamic Hybrid Beamforming Design for Dual-Function Radar-Communication Systems

This paper investigates dynamic hybrid beamforming (HBF) for a dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) system, where the DFRC base station (BS) simultaneously serves multiple single-antenna users and senses a target in the presence of multiple clutters. Particularly, we apply a HBF architecture with dynamic subarrays and double phase shifters in the DFRC BS. Aiming at maximizing the radar mutual information, we consider jointly designing the dynamic HBF of the DFRC system, subject to the constraints of communication quality of service (QoS), transmit power, and analog beamformer. To solve the complicated non-convex optimization, an efficient alternating optimization algorithm based on the majorization-minimization methods is developed. Simulation results verify the advancement of the considered HBF architecture and the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

ViHOPE: Visuotactile In-Hand Object 6D Pose Estimation with Shape Completion

In this letter, we introduce ViHOPE, a novel framework for estimating the 6D pose of an in-hand object using visuotactile perception. Our key insight is that the accuracy of the 6D object pose estimate can be improved by explicitly completing the shape of the object. To this end, we introduce a novel visuotactile shape completion module that uses a conditional Generative Adversarial Network to complete the shape of an in-hand object based on volumetric representation. This approach improves over prior works that directly regress visuotactile observations to a 6D pose. By explicitly completing the shape of the in-hand object and jointly optimizing the shape completion and pose estimation tasks, we improve the accuracy of the 6D object pose estimate. We train and test our model on a synthetic dataset and compare it with the state-of-the-art. In the visuotactile shape completion task, we outperform the state-of-the-art by 265% using the Intersection of Union metric and achieve 88% lower Chamfer Distance. In the visuotactile pose estimation task, we present results that suggest our framework reduces position and angular errors by 35% and 64%, respectively. Furthermore, we ablate our framework to confirm the gain on the 6D object pose estimate from explicitly completing the shape. Ultimately, we show that our framework produces models that are robust to sim-to-real transfer on a real-world robot platform.

Local neural operator for solving transient partial differential equations on varied domains

Artificial intelligence (AI) shows great potential to reduce the huge cost of solving partial differential equations (PDEs). However, it is not fully realized in practice as neural networks are defined and trained on fixed domains and boundaries. Herein, we propose local neural operator (LNO) for solving transient PDEs on varied domains. It comes together with a handy strategy including boundary treatments, enabling one pre-trained LNO to predict solutions on different domains. For demonstration, LNO learns Navier-Stokes equations from randomly generated data samples, and then the pre-trained LNO is used as an explicit numerical time-marching scheme to solve the flow of fluid on unseen domains, e.g., the flow in a lid-driven cavity and the flow across the cascade of airfoils. It is about 1000$\times$ faster than the conventional finite element method to calculate the flow across the cascade of airfoils. The solving process with pre-trained LNO achieves great efficiency, with significant potential to accelerate numerical calculations in practice.

A unique van Hove singularity in kagome superconductor CsV$_{3-x}$Ta$_x$Sb$_5$ with enhanced superconductivity

Van Hove singularity (VHS) has been considered as a driving source for unconventional superconductivity. A VHS in two-dimensional (2D) materials consists of a saddle point connecting electron-like and hole-like bands. In a rare case, when a VHS appears at Fermi level, both electron-like and hole-like conduction can coexist, giving rise to an enhanced density of states as well as an attractive component of Coulomb interaction for unconventional electronic pairing. However, this van Hove scenario is often destroyed by an incorrect chemical potential or competing instabilities. Here, by using angle-resolved photoemission measurements, we report the observation of a VHS perfectly aligned with the Fermi level in a kagome superconductor CsV$_{3-x}$Ta$_x$Sb$_5$ (x~0.4), in which a record-high superconducting transition temperature is achieved among all the current variants of AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=Cs, Rb, K) at ambient pressure. Doping dependent measurements reveal the important role of van Hove scenario in boosting superconductivity, and spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy measurements indicate a distinct superconducting state in this system.

A Dynamic Grouping Strategy for Beyond Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces with Hybrid Transmitting and Reflecting Mode

Beyond diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS) is a novel branch of RIS which breaks through the limitation of traditional RIS with diagonal scattering matrices. However, the existing research focuses on BD-RIS with fixed architectures regardless of channel state information (CSI), which limit the achievable performance of BD-RIS. To solve this issue, in this paper, we propose a novel dynamically group-connected BD-RIS based on a dynamic grouping strategy. Specifically, RIS antennas are dynamically divided into several subsets adapting to the CSI, yielding a permuted block-diagonal scattering matrix. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed dynamically group-connected BD-RIS, we propose an efficient algorithm to optimize the BD-RIS with dynamic grouping for a BD-RIS-assisted multi-user multiple-input single-output system. Simulation results show that the proposed dynamically group-connected architecture outperforms fixed group-connected architectures.

Learning to Learn to Predict Performance Regressions in Production at Meta

Catching and attributing code change-induced performance regressions in production is hard; predicting them beforehand, even harder. A primer on automatically learning to predict performance regressions in software, this article gives an account of the experiences we gained when researching and deploying an ML-based regression prediction pipeline at Meta. In this paper, we report on a comparative study with four ML models of increasing complexity, from (1) code-opaque, over (2) Bag of Words, (3) off-the-shelve Transformer-based, to (4) a bespoke Transformer-based model, coined SuperPerforator. Our investigation shows the inherent difficulty of the performance prediction problem, which is characterized by a large imbalance of benign onto regressing changes. Our results also call into question the general applicability of Transformer-based architectures for performance prediction: an off-the-shelve CodeBERT-based approach had surprisingly poor performance; our highly customized SuperPerforator architecture initially achieved prediction performance that was just on par with simpler Bag of Words models, and only outperformed them for down-stream use cases. This ability of SuperPerforator to transfer to an application with few learning examples afforded an opportunity to deploy it in practice at Meta: it can act as a pre-filter to sort out changes that are unlikely to introduce a regression, truncating the space of changes to search a regression in by up to 43%, a 45x improvement over a random baseline. To gain further insight into SuperPerforator, we explored it via a series of experiments computing counterfactual explanations. These highlight which parts of a code change the model deems important, thereby validating the learned black-box model.

Joint Transmit and Receive Beamforming Design in Full-Duplex Integrated Sensing and Communications

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as a solution to realize the sensing capability required for emerging applications in wireless networks, while efficiently utilizing the available spectral, hardware and energy resources. A commonly studied scenario in the ISAC literature involves a transceiver (e.g., a base station) serving a communication user, while simultaneously sensing targets from the reflected echo signals, by acting as a mono-static radar. However, as signal transmission durations are typically much longer than the radar echo round-trip times, the radar returns are drowned by the strong self interference (SI) from the transmitter - a phenomenon termed the echo-miss problem. A promising approach involves the ISAC transceiver to be full-duplex (FD), and in this paper we jointly design the transmit and receive beamformers at the transceiver, transmit precoder at the uplink user, and receive combiner at the downlink user to simultaneously (a) maximize the uplink and downlink rate, (b) maximize the transmit and receive radar beampattern power at the target, and (c) suppress the residual SI. Numerical results illustrate that the proposed design can effectively achieve up to 60 dB digital-domain SI cancellation, a higher average sum-rate, and more accurate radar parameter estimation compared with previous ISAC FD studies.

Temperature-Dependent and Magnetism-Controlled Fermi Surface Changes in Magnetic Weyl Semimetals

The coupling between band structure and magnetism can lead to intricate Fermi surface modifications. Here we report on the comprehensive study of the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) effect in two rare-earth-based magnetic Weyl semimetals, NdAlSi and CeAlSi$_{0.8}$Ge$_{0.2}$. The results show that the temperature evolution of topologically nontrivial Fermi surfaces strongly depends on magnetic configurations. In NdAlSi, the SdH frequencies vary with temperature in both the paramagnetic state and the magnetically ordered state with a chiral spin texture, but become temperature independent in the high-field fully polarized state. In CeAlSi$_{0.8}$Ge$_{0.2}$, SdH frequencies are temperature-dependent only in the ferromagnetic state with magnetic fields applied along the $c$ axis. First-principles calculations suggest that the notable temperature and magnetic-configuration dependence of Fermi surface morphology can be attributed to strong exchange coupling between the conduction electrons and local magnetic moments.

Beyond Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: A Multi-Sector Mode Enabling Highly Directional Full-Space Wireless Coverage

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has gained much traction due to its potential to manipulate the propagation environment via nearly-passive reconfigurable elements. In our previous work, we have analyzed and proposed a beyond diagonal RIS (BD-RIS) model, which is not limited to traditional diagonal phase shift matrices, to unify different RIS modes/architectures. In this paper, we create a new branch of BD-RIS supporting a multi-sector mode. A multi-sector BD-RIS is modeled as multiple antennas connected to a multi-port group-connected reconfigurable impedance network. More specifically, antennas are divided into $L$ ($L \ge 2$) sectors and arranged as a polygon prism with each sector covering $1/L$ space. Different from the recently introduced concept of intelligent omni-surface (or simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS), the multi-sector BD-RIS not only achieves a full-space coverage, but also has significant performance gains thanks to the highly directional beam of each sector. We derive the constraint of the multi-sector BD-RIS and the corresponding channel model taking into account the relationship between antenna beamwidth and gain. With the proposed model, we first derive the scaling law of the received signal power for a multi-sector BD-RIS-assisted single-user system. We then propose efficient beamforming design algorithms to maximize the sum-rate of the multi-sector BD-RIS-assisted multiuser system. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed design and demonstrate the performance enhancement of the proposed multi-sector BD-RIS.

StereoVoxelNet: Real-Time Obstacle Detection Based on Occupancy Voxels from a Stereo Camera Using Deep Neural Networks

Obstacle detection is a safety-critical problem in robot navigation, where stereo matching is a popular vision-based approach. While deep neural networks have shown impressive results in computer vision, most of the previous obstacle detection works only leverage traditional stereo matching techniques to meet the computational constraints for real-time feedback. This paper proposes a computationally efficient method that employs a deep neural network to detect occupancy from stereo images directly. Instead of learning the point cloud correspondence from the stereo data, our approach extracts the compact obstacle distribution based on volumetric representations. In addition, we prune the computation of safety irrelevant spaces in a coarse-to-fine manner based on octrees generated by the decoder. As a result, we achieve real-time performance on the onboard computer (NVIDIA Jetson TX2). Our approach detects obstacles accurately in the range of 32 meters and achieves better IoU (Intersection over Union) and CD (Chamfer Distance) scores with only 2% of the computation cost of the state-of-the-art stereo model. Furthermore, we validate our method's robustness and real-world feasibility through autonomous navigation experiments with a real robot. Hence, our work contributes toward closing the gap between the stereo-based system in robot perception and state-of-the-art stereo models in computer vision. To counter the scarcity of high-quality real-world indoor stereo datasets, we collect a 1.36 hours stereo dataset with a mobile robot which is used to fine-tune our model. The dataset, the code, and further details including additional visualizations are available at https://lhy.xyz/stereovoxelnet

Unidirectional electron-phonon coupling as a "fingerprint'' of the nematic state in a kagome superconductor

Electronic nematicity has been commonly observed in juxtaposition with unconventional superconductivity. Understanding the nature of the nematic state, as well as its consequence on the electronic band structure and superconductivity, has become a pivotal focus in condensed matter physics. Here we use spectroscopic imaging-scanning tunneling microscopy to visualize how the interacting quasiparticles organize themselves in the nematic state of kagome superconductor CsV$_{3-x}$Ti$_x$Sb$_5$, in which twofold symmetric (C$_2$) quasiparticle scattering interference of the vanadium kagome bands emerges below the bulk nematic transition temperature (T$_{nem}$). Surprisingly, we find that the coupling to collective modes, i.e., the phonon, dramatically alters the electrons self-energy and renormalizes the Fermi velocity of the in-plane vanadium d$_{xy/x^2-y^2}$ bands only along the C$_2$ direction, making the low-energy dispersion and electron dynamics highly nonequivalent along the three lattice directions. The anti-correlation between T$_{nem}$ and the superconducting transition temperature upon Ti substitution further suggests a possible competition between superconductivity and electron nematicity in this series, with a principal superconducting gap opening on the same V bands once the nematic state is totally suppressed. The organizing principle of these quasiparticles provides essential information for understanding the interplay between charge density wave and superconductivity in these kagome superconductors, and also reveals a previously unexplored form that expands the landscape for modelling electronic nematicity in systems where electron correlations and lattice degree of freedom act in concert.

DuReader_retrieval: A Large-scale Chinese Benchmark for Passage Retrieval from Web Search Engine

In this paper, we present DuReader_retrieval, a large-scale Chinese dataset for passage retrieval. DuReader_retrieval contains more than 90K queries and over 8M unique passages from a commercial search engine. To alleviate the shortcomings of other datasets and ensure the quality of our benchmark, we (1) reduce the false negatives in development and test sets by manually annotating results pooled from multiple retrievers, and (2) remove the training queries that are semantically similar to the development and testing queries. Additionally, we provide two out-of-domain testing sets for cross-domain evaluation, as well as a set of human translated queries for for cross-lingual retrieval evaluation. The experiments demonstrate that DuReader_retrieval is challenging and a number of problems remain unsolved, such as the salient phrase mismatch and the syntactic mismatch between queries and paragraphs. These experiments also show that dense retrievers do not generalize well across domains, and cross-lingual retrieval is essentially challenging. DuReader_retrieval is publicly available at https://github.com/baidu/DuReader/tree/master/DuReader-Retrieval.

Statistical Inference of Cell-type Proportions Estimated from Bulk Expression Data

There is a growing interest in cell-type-specific analysis from bulk samples with a mixture of different cell types. A critical first step in such analyses is the accurate estimation of cell-type proportions in a bulk sample. Although many methods have been proposed recently, quantifying the uncertainties associated with the estimated cell-type proportions has not been well studied. Lack of consideration of these uncertainties can lead to missed or false findings in downstream analyses. In this article, we introduce a flexible statistical deconvolution framework that allows a general and subject-specific covariance of bulk gene expressions. Under this framework, we propose a decorrelated constrained least squares method called DECALS that estimates cell-type proportions as well as the sampling distribution of the estimates. Simulation studies demonstrate that DECALS can accurately quantify the uncertainties in the estimated proportions whereas other methods fail. Applying DECALS to analyze bulk gene expression data of post mortem brain samples from the ROSMAP and GTEx projects, we show that taking into account the uncertainties in the estimated cell-type proportions can lead to more accurate identifications of cell-type-specific differentially expressed genes and transcripts between different subject groups, such as between Alzheimer's disease patients and controls and between males and females.

Deep Reinforcement Learning based Robot Navigation in Dynamic Environments using Occupancy Values of Motion Primitives

This paper presents a Deep Reinforcement Learning based navigation approach in which we define the occupancy observations as heuristic evaluations of motion primitives, rather than using raw sensor data. Our method enables fast mapping of the occupancy data, generated by multi-sensor fusion, into trajectory values in 3D workspace. The computationally efficient trajectory evaluation allows dense sampling of the action space. We utilize our occupancy observations in different data structures to analyze their effects on both training process and navigation performance. We train and test our methodology on two different robots within challenging physics-based simulation environments including static and dynamic obstacles. We benchmark our occupancy representations with other conventional data structures from state-of-the-art methods. The trained navigation policies are also validated successfully with physical robots in dynamic environments. The results show that our method not only decreases the required training time but also improves the navigation performance as compared to other occupancy representations. As Part III of the tutorial, this letter provides an overview of integrating RSMA and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). We first introduce two potential PHY layer techniques, namely, RSMA and RIS, including the need for integrating RSMA with RIS and how they could help each other. Next, we provide a general model of an RIS-aided RSMA system and summarize some key performance metrics. Then, we discuss the major advantages of RIS-aided RSMA networks, and illustrate the rate region of RIS-aided RSMA for both perfect and imperfect channel conditions. Finally, we summarize the research challenges and open problems for RIS-aided RSMA systems. In conclusion, RSMA is a promising technology for next generation multiple access (NGMA) and future networks such as 6G and beyond.

Beyond Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: From Transmitting and Reflecting Modes to Single-, Group-, and Fully-Connected Architectures

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are envisioned as a promising technology for future wireless communications. With various hardware realizations, RISs can work under different modes (reflective/transmissive/hybrid) or have different architectures (single/group/fully-connected). However, most existing research focused on single-connected reflective RISs, mathematically characterized by diagonal phase shift matrices, while there is a lack of a comprehensive study for RISs unifying different modes/architectures. In this paper, we solve this issue by analyzing and proposing a general RIS-aided communication model. Specifically, we establish an RIS model not limited to diagonal phase shift matrices, a novel branch referred to as beyond diagonal RIS (BD-RIS), unifying modes and architectures. With the proposed model, we develop efficient algorithms to jointly design transmit precoder and BDRIS matrix to maximize the sum-rate for RIS-aided systems. We also provide simulation results to compare the performance of BD-RISs with different modes/architectures. Simulation results show that under the same mode, fully- and group-connected RIS can effectively increase the sum-rate performance compared with single-connected RIS, and that hybrid RIS outperforms reflective/transmissive RIS with the same architecture.

Deep Learning Eliminates Massive Dust Storms from Images of Tianwen-1

Dust storms may remarkably degrade the imaging quality of Martian orbiters and delay the progress of mapping the global topography and geomorphology. To address this issue, this paper presents an approach that reuses the image dehazing knowledge obtained on Earth to resolve the dust-removal problem on Mars. In this approach, we collect remote-sensing images captured by Tianwen-1 and manually select hundreds of clean and dusty images. Inspired by the haze formation process on Earth, we formulate a similar visual degradation process on clean images and synthesize dusty images sharing a similar feature distribution with realistic dusty images. These realistic clean and synthetic dusty image pairs are used to train a deep model that inherently encodes dust irrelevant features and decodes them into dust-free images. Qualitative and quantitative results show that dust storms can be effectively eliminated by the proposed approach, leading to obviously improved topographical and geomorphological details of Mars.
