Sub-Infinite Horizon Stochastic Linear-Quadratic Optimal Control Problems and Delayed Backward Riccati Equations

In this paper, we investigate a class of so-called sub-infinite horizon stochastic linear-quadratic optimal control problems, in which the initial time $t$ is arbitrarily taken from $[0,\infty)$ and the running cost is defined over $[t,t+T]$ for a given $T>0$. The optimal control of this type of problem can be obtained by standard methods; however, it is shown that the resulting optimal control is generally time-inconsistent. Thus, instead of seeking an optimal control, which is time-inconsistent, we aim to find a time-consistent, locally optimal, and time-invariant equilibrium strategy, by introducing a new and very interesting type of Riccati equation. Its main feature is that the generator depends on a delay term of the unknown. In other words, this Riccati equation is a backward ordinary differential equation (ODE) with delay, which is equivalent to a forward ODE with advanced terms. Such an equation is essentially a Fredholm integral equation, whose solvability is challenging. We overcome the difficulty by deriving a sharp a priori estimate and applying the Leray--Schauder fixed point theorem. To this end, we establish a comparison theorem between two matrix-valued nonlinear algebraic equations. The convergence behavior of the solution to the Riccati equation as $T\to\infty$ is also provided.

Optimization of the Principal Eigenvalue for Elliptic Operators

Maximization and minimization problems of the principle eigenvalue for divergence form second order elliptic operators with the Dirichlet boundary condition are considered. The principal eigen map of such elliptic operators is introduced and some basic properties of this map, including continuity, concavity, and differentiability with respect to the parameter in the diffusibility matrix, are established. For maximization problem, the admissible control set is convexified to get the existence of an optimal convexified relaxed solution. Whereas, for minimization problem, the relaxation of the problem under $H$-convergence is introduced to get an optimal $H$-relaxed solution for certain interesting special cases. Some necessary optimality conditions are presented for both problems and a couple of illustrative examples are presented as well.

Optimality conditions for optimal control of multisolution p-Laplacian elliptic equations

In this paper, an optimal control problem governed by a class of p-Laplacian elliptic equations is studied. In particular, as no monotonicity assumption is assumed on the nonlinear term, the state equation may admit several solutions for one control. To obtain optimality conditions for an optimal pair, the multiplicity and singularity/degeneracy of the state equation need to be handled respectively. For this reason, penalization problems and approximation problems are introduced. Finally the main result is proved by a series of process of taking to the limits.

Second-Order Necessary Conditions for Optimal Control of Semilinear Elliptic Equations with Leading Term Containing Controls

An optimal control problem for a semilinear elliptic equation of divergence form is considered. Both the leading term and the semilinear term of the state equation contain the control. The well-known Pontryagin type maximum principle for the optimal controls is the first-order necessary condition. When such a first-order necessary condition is singular in some sense, certain type of the second-order necessary condition will come in naturally. The aim of this paper is to explore such kind of conditions for our optimal control problem.

Optimal Blowup Time for Controlled Ordinary Differential Equations

Both the shortest and the longest blowup time for a controlled system are considered. Existence result and maximum principle for optimal triple are established. Thanks to some monotonicity of the controlled system, some kinds of "the front part local optimality" for optimal triple is established. Then proofs of the main results become easy, clear and abundant.

Time optimal control problems for some non-smooth systems

Time optimal control problems for some non-smooth systems in general form are considered. The non-smoothness is caused by singularity. It is proved that Pontryagin's maximum principle holds for at least one optimal relaxed control. Thus, Pontryagin's maximum principle holds when the optimal classical control is a unique optimal relaxed control. By constructing an auxiliary controlled system which admits the original optimal classical control as its unique optimal relaxed control, one get a chance to get Pontryagin's maximum principle for the original optimal classical control. Existence results are also considered.

Necessary and Sufficient Conditions for Distinguishability of Linear Control Systems

Distinguishability takes a crucial rule in studying observability of hybrid system such as switched system. Recently, for two linear systems, Lou and Si gave a condition not only necessary but also sufficient to the distinguishability of linear systems. However, the condition is not easy enough to verify. This paper will give a new equivalent condition which is relatively easy to verify.

The Proof of Alzer's Conjecture on Generalized Logarithmic Mean

In 1987, Alzer posed a conjecture on generalized logarithmic mean, which was introduced by Stolarsky in 1975. To prove Alzer's conjecture, Lou posed a conjecture on generalized inverse harmonic mean in 1995. By proving Lou's conjecture, the paper yields Alzer's conjecture finally.
