Unveiling Nonlinear Dynamics in Catastrophe Bond Pricing: A Machine Learning Perspective

This paper explores the implications of using machine learning models in the pricing of catastrophe (CAT) bonds. By integrating advanced machine learning techniques, our approach uncovers nonlinear relationships and complex interactions between key risk factors and CAT bond spreads -- dynamics that are often overlooked by traditional linear regression models. Using primary market CAT bond transaction records between January 1999 and March 2021, our findings demonstrate that machine learning models not only enhance the accuracy of CAT bond pricing but also provide a deeper understanding of how various risk factors interact and influence bond prices in a nonlinear way. These findings suggest that investors and issuers can benefit from incorporating machine learning to better capture the intricate interplay between risk factors when pricing CAT bonds. The results also highlight the potential for machine learning models to refine our understanding of asset pricing in markets characterized by complex risk structures.

Formation of quasi-single helicity state from a paramagnetic pinch in KTX regime

The formation of quasi-single helicity (QSH) state from a paramagnetic pinch in the KTX-RFP regime has been observed in recent NIMROD simulations. The quasi-single helicity state has a dominant helical component of the magnetic field that is known to improve the RFP confinement. For the initial paramagnetic pinch, linear calculations indicate that the tearing mode growth rate decreases with the plasma $β$. The initial QSH state arises from the dominant linear instability of the initial force-free paramagnetic pinch. The plasma's self-organization towards the second QSH state after the relaxation of the initial QSH state is found to depend on $β$. Specifically, when $β<4\%$, the plasma relaxes to an MH state; when $4\% \leq β\leq 8\%$, the plasma first transitions from a double axis (DAx) to a single helical axis (SHAx) state, and eventually return to the DAx state. The existence of such an optimal $β$ regime that is beneficial to the formation and maintenance of the QSH state, suggests an experimental scheme for the QSH formation based on $β$ tuning and control.

Improving Typhoon Predictions by Integrating Data-Driven Machine Learning Models with Physics Models Based on the Spectral Nudging and Data Assimilation

With the rapid development of data-driven machine learning (ML) models in meteorology, typhoon track forecasts have become increasingly accurate. However, current ML models still face challenges, such as underestimating typhoon intensity and lacking interpretability. To address these issues, this study establishes an ML-driven hybrid typhoon model, where forecast fields from the Pangu-Weather model are used to constrain the large-scale forecasts of the Weather Research and Forecasting model based on the spectral nudging method (Pangu_SP). The results show that forecasts from the Pangu_SP experiment obviously outperform those by using the Global Forecast System as the initial field (GFS_INIT) and from the Integrated Forecasting System of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF IFS) for the track forecast of Typhoon Doksuri (2023). The predicted typhoon cloud patterns from Pangu_SP are also more consistent with satellite observations. Additionally, the typhoon intensity forecasts from Pangu_SP are notably more accurate than those from the ECMWF IFS, demonstrating that the hybrid model effectively leverages the strengths of both ML and physical models. Furthermore, this study is the first to explore the significance of data assimilation in ML-driven hybrid dynamical systems. The findings reveal that after assimilating water vapor channels from the Advanced Geostationary Radiation Imager onboard Fengyun-4B, the errors in typhoon intensity forecasts are reduced.

DiffuX2CT: Diffusion Learning to Reconstruct CT Images from Biplanar X-Rays

Computed tomography (CT) is widely utilized in clinical settings because it delivers detailed 3D images of the human body. However, performing CT scans is not always feasible due to radiation exposure and limitations in certain surgical environments. As an alternative, reconstructing CT images from ultra-sparse X-rays offers a valuable solution and has gained significant interest in scientific research and medical applications. However, it presents great challenges as it is inherently an ill-posed problem, often compromised by artifacts resulting from overlapping structures in X-ray images. In this paper, we propose DiffuX2CT, which models CT reconstruction from orthogonal biplanar X-rays as a conditional diffusion process. DiffuX2CT is established with a 3D global coherence denoising model with a new, implicit conditioning mechanism. We realize the conditioning mechanism by a newly designed tri-plane decoupling generator and an implicit neural decoder. By doing so, DiffuX2CT achieves structure-controllable reconstruction, which enables 3D structural information to be recovered from 2D X-rays, therefore producing faithful textures in CT images. As an extra contribution, we collect a real-world lumbar CT dataset, called LumbarV, as a new benchmark to verify the clinical significance and performance of CT reconstruction from X-rays. Extensive experiments on this dataset and three more publicly available datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposal.

TimeTravel: Real-time Timing Drift Attack on System Time Using Acoustic Waves

Real-time Clock (RTC) has been widely used in various real-time systems to provide precise system time. In this paper, we reveal a new security vulnerability of the RTC circuit, where the internal storage time or timestamp can be arbitrarily modified forward or backward. The security threat of dynamic modifications of system time caused by this vulnerability is called TimeTravel. Based on acoustic resonance and piezoelectric effects, TimeTravel applies acoustic guide waves to the quartz crystal, thereby adjusting the characteristics of the oscillating signal transmitted into the RTC circuit. By manipulating the parameters of acoustic waves, TimeTravel can accelerate or decelerate the timing speed of system time at an adjustable rate, resulting in the relative drift of the timing, which can pose serious safety threats. To assess the severity of TimeTravel, we examine nine modules and two commercial devices under the RTC circuit. The experimental results show that TimeTravel can drift system time forward and backward at a chosen speed with a maximum 93% accuracy. Our analysis further shows that TimeTravel can maintain an attack success rate of no less than 77% under environments with typical obstacle items.

Forecast of foreground cleaning strategies for AliCPT-1

We report the test results of several independent foreground-cleaning pipelines used in the Ali CMB Polarization Telescope experiment (AliCPT-1), a high-altitude CMB imager in the Northern hemisphere with thousands of detectors dedicated to the search for a primordial CMB polarization $B$-mode signature. Based on simulated data from 4 detector modules and a single season of observation, which we refer to as Data Challenge 1 (DC1), we employ different and independent pipelines to examine the robustness and effectiveness of the estimates on foreground parameters and the primordial $B$-mode detection. The foreground-cleaning strategies used in the pipelines include the parametric method of template fitting (TF) and the non-parametric methods of the constrained internal linear combination (cILC), the analytical blind separation (ABS), and the generalized least squares (GLS). We examine the impact of possible foreground residuals on the estimate of the CMB tensor-to-scalar ratio ($r$) for each pipeline by changing the contamination components in the simulated maps and varying the foreground models and sky patches for various tests. According to the DC1 data with the simulation input value $r_{\rm true}=0.023$, the foreground residual contamination levels in the TF/ABS/cILC/GLS pipelines are well within the corresponding statistical errors at the $2σ$ level. Furthermore, by utilizing the tension estimator, which helps identify significant residual foreground contamination in the detection of the primordial $B$-mode signal by quantifying the discrepancy between various $r$ measurements, we conclude that the presence of small foreground residuals does not lead to any significant inconsistency in the estimation of $r$.

Async Learned User Embeddings for Ads Delivery Optimization

In recommendation systems, high-quality user embeddings can capture subtle preferences, enable precise similarity calculations, and adapt to changing preferences over time to maintain relevance. The effectiveness of recommendation systems depends on the quality of user embedding. We propose to asynchronously learn high fidelity user embeddings for billions of users each day from sequence based multimodal user activities through a Transformer-like large scale feature learning module. The async learned user representations embeddings (ALURE) are further converted to user similarity graphs through graph learning and then combined with user realtime activities to retrieval highly related ads candidates for the ads delivery system. Our method shows significant gains in both offline and online experiments.

Isolated anions induced high ionic conductivity

One of the key materials in solid-state lithium batteries is fast ion conductors. However, the Li+ ion transport in inorganic crystals involves complex factors, making it a mystery to find and design ion conductors with low migration barriers. In this work, a distinctive structural characteristic involving isolated anions has been discovered to enhance high ionic conductivity in crystals. It is an effective way to create a smooth energy potential landscape and construct local pathways for lithium ion migration. By adjusting the spacing and arrangement of the isolated anions, these local pathways can connect with each other, leading to high ion conductivity. By designing different space groups and local environments of the Se2- anions in the Li8SiSe6 composition, combined with the ion transport properties obtained from AIMD simulations, we define isolated anions and find that local environment with higher point group symmetry promotes the formation of cage-like local transport channels. Additionally, the appropriate distance between neighboring isolated anions can create coplanar connections between adjacent cage-like channels. Furthermore, different types of isolated anions can be used to control the distribution of cage-like channels in the lattice. Based on the structural characteristic of isolated anions, we discovered compounds with isolated N3-, Cl-, I-, and S2- features from the crystal structure databases. The confirmation of ion transport in these structures validates the proposed design method of using isolated anions as structural features for fast ion conductors and leads to the discovery of several new fast ion conductor materials.

A Constrained NILC method for CMB B mode observations

The Internal Linear Combination (ILC) method is commonly employed to extract the cosmic microwave background (CMB) signal from multi-frequency observation maps. However, the performance of the ILC method tends to degrade when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is relatively low, particularly when measuring the primordial $B$-modes to detect the primordial gravitational waves. To address this issue, an enhanced version of the ILC method, known as constrained ILC, is proposed. This method is designed to be more suitable for situations with low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by incorporating additional prior foreground information. In our study, we have modified the constraint Needlet ILC method and successfully improved its performance at low SNR. We illustrate our methods using mock data generated from the combination of WMAP, Planck and a ground-based experiment in the northern hemisphere, and the chosen noise level for the ground-based experiment are very conservative which can be easily achieved in the very near future. The results show that the level of foreground residual can be well controlled. In comparison to the standard NILC method, which introduces a bias to the tensor-to-scalar ratio ($r$) of approximately $0.05$, the constrained NILC method exhibits a significantly reduced bias of only around $5\times10^{-3}$ towards $r$ which is much smaller than the statistical error.

EditWorld: Simulating World Dynamics for Instruction-Following Image Editing

Diffusion models have significantly improved the performance of image editing. Existing methods realize various approaches to achieve high-quality image editing, including but not limited to text control, dragging operation, and mask-and-inpainting. Among these, instruction-based editing stands out for its convenience and effectiveness in following human instructions across diverse scenarios. However, it still focuses on simple editing operations like adding, replacing, or deleting, and falls short of understanding aspects of world dynamics that convey the realistic dynamic nature in the physical world. Therefore, this work, EditWorld, introduces a new editing task, namely world-instructed image editing, which defines and categorizes the instructions grounded by various world scenarios. We curate a new image editing dataset with world instructions using a set of large pretrained models (e.g., GPT-3.5, Video-LLava and SDXL). To enable sufficient simulation of world dynamics for image editing, our EditWorld trains model in the curated dataset, and improves instruction-following ability with designed post-edit strategy. Extensive experiments demonstrate our method significantly outperforms existing editing methods in this new task. Our dataset and code will be available at https://github.com/YangLing0818/EditWorld

A family of air-stable chalcogenide solid electrolytes in Li$_2$BMQ$_4$ (B = Ca, Sr and Ba; M = Si, Ge and Sn; Q = O, S and Se) systems

Combining high-throughput first-principles calculations and experimental measurements, we have identified a novel family of fast lithium-ion chalcogenide conductors in Li$_2$BMQ$_4$ (2114, B = Ca, Sr and Ba; M = Si, Ge and Sn; Q = O, S and Se) systems. Our calculations demonstrate that most of the thermodynamically and kinetically stable sulfides and selenides in this new system exhibit ultralow Li$^+$ ion migration activation energy (0.16 eV ~ 0.56 eV) and considerable bandgaps varying between ~ 2 eV and 3.5 eV. We have successfully synthesized Li$_2$BaSnS$_4$ and Li$_2$SrSiS$_4$, and they exhibit excellent moisture stability through H$_2$S gas measurements. Electrochemical impedance measurements indicate 2114 systems show the typical features of solid ionic conductors, with a room-temperature Li$^+$ conductivity close to 5$\times$10$^{-4}$ mS/cm aligning with our molecular dynamics simulations. Furthermore, we have theoretically investigated the substitution of Cl$^-$ at S$^{2-}$ site. The doped compounds display significantly higher conductivity, with an increase of about three orders of magnitude (up to a maximum of 0.72 mS/cm) compared to the undoped compounds. These findings offer valuable insights for the further exploration of potential chalcogenide solid electrolyte materials with robust air stability and enhanced ionic conductivity for practical applications in lithium-ion batteries.

Effects of Magnetic Helicity on 3D Equilibria and Self-Organized States in KTX Reversed Field Pinch

The RFP is a toroidal magnetic configuration in which plasmas can spontaneously transform into different self-organized states. Among various states, the QSH state has a dominant component for the magnetic field and significantly improves confinement. Many theoretical and experimental efforts have investigated the transitions among different states. This paper employs the MRxMHD model to study the properties of QSH and other states. The SPEC is used to compute MHD equilibria for the KTX. The toroidal volume of KTX is partitioned into two subvolumes by an internal transport barrier. The geometry of this barrier is adjusted to achieve force balance across the interface, ensuring that the plasma in each subvolume is force-free and that magnetic helicity is conserved. By varying the parameters, we generate distinct self-organized states in KTX. Our findings highlight the crucial role of magnetic helicity in shaping these states. In states with low magnetic helicity in both subvolumes, the plasma exhibits axisymmetric behavior. With increasing core helicity, the plasma gradually transforms from an axisymmetric state to a double-axis helical state and finally to a single-helical-axis state. Elevated core magnetic helicity leads to a more pronounced dominant mode of the boundary magnetic field and a reduced core magnetic shear. This is consistent with previous experimental and numerical results in other RFP devices. We find a linear relationship between the plasma current and helicity in different self-organized states. Our findings suggest that KTX may enter the QSH state when the toroidal current reaches 0.72 MA. This study demonstrates that the stellarator equilibrium code SPEC unveils crucial RFP equilibrium properties, rendering it applicable to a broad range of RFP devices and other toroidal configurations.

Haina Storage: A Decentralized Secure Storage Framework Based on Improved Blockchain Structure

Although the decentralized storage technology based on the blockchain can effectively realize secure data storage on cloud services. However, there are still some problems in the existing schemes, such as low storage capacity and low efficiency. To address related issues, we propose a novel decentralized storage framework, which mainly includes four aspects: (1) we proposed a Bi-direction Circular Linked Chain Structure (BCLCS), which improves data's storage capacity and applicability in decentralized storage. (2) A Proof of Resources (PoR) decision model is proposed. By introducing the network environment as an essential evaluation parameter of storage right decision, the energy and time consumption of decision-making are reduced, and the fairness of decision-making is improved. (3) A chain structure dynamic locking mechanism (CSDLM) is designed to realize anti-traverse and access control. (4) A Bi-directional data Access Mechanism (BDAM) is proposed, which improves the efficiency of data access and acquisition in decentralized storage mode. The experimental results show that the framework has significantly improved the shortcomings of the current decentralized storage.

Mechanistic Insights into Temperature Effects for Ionic Conductivity in Li6PS5Cl

Ensuring solid-state lithium batteries perform well across a wide temperature range is crucial for their practical use. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations can provide valuable insights into the temperature dependence of the battery materials, however, the high computational cost of ab initio MD poses challenges for simulating ion migration dynamics at low temperatures. To address this issue, accurate machine-learning interatomic potentials were trained, which enable efficient and reliable simulations of the ionic diffusion processes in Li6PS5Cl over a large temperature range for long-time evolution. Our study revealed the significant impact of subtle lattice parameter variations on Li+ diffusion at low temperatures and identified the increasing influence of surface contributions as the temperature decreases. Our findings elucidate the factors influencing low temperature performance and present strategic guidance towards improving the performance of solid-state lithium batteries under these conditions.

Efficient Learning Strategy for Predicting Glass Forming Ability in Imbalanced Datasets of Bulk Metallic Glasses

The prediction of glass forming ability (GFA) and various properties in bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) pose a challenge due to the unique disordered atomic structure in this type of materials. Machine learning shows the potential ability to find a way out. However, the training set from the experimental data of BMGs faces the issue of data imbalance, including the distribution of data related to elements, the range of performance data, and the distribution of sparse and dense data area in each specific system. In this work, the origin of the data imbalance and its impact on the GFA prediction ability of machine learning models are analyzed. We propose the solutions by training the model using the pruned dataset to mitigate the imbalance and by performing an active experimental iterative learning to compensate for the information loss resulting from data reduction. The strategy is proved in Zr-Al-Cu system, and the automated workflow has been established. It effectively avoids the prediction results from trapping into the intensive training data area or from inducing by the data distribution of similar element systems. This approach will expedite the development of new BMGs compositions especially for unexplored systems.

Quantifying magnetic field driven lattice distortions in kagome metals at the femto-scale using scanning tunneling microscopy

A wide array of unusual phenomena has recently been uncovered in kagome solids. The charge density wave (CDW) state in the kagome superconductor AV3Sb5 in particular intrigued the community -- the CDW phase appears to break the time-reversal symmetry despite the absence of spin magnetism, which has been tied to exotic orbital loop currents possibly intertwined with magnetic field tunable crystal distortions. To test this connection, precise determination of the lattice response to applied magnetic field is crucial, but can be challenging at the atomic-scale. We establish a new scanning tunneling microscopy based method to study the evolution of the AV3Sb5 atomic structure as a function of magnetic field. The method substantially reduces the errors of typical STM measurements, which are at the order of 1% when measuring an in-plane lattice constant change. We find that the out-of-plane lattice constant of AV3Sb5 remains unchanged (within 10^-6) by the application of both in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields. We also reveal that the in-plane lattice response to magnetic field is at most at the order of 0.05%. Our experiments provide further constraints on time-reversal symmetry breaking in kagome metals, and establish a new tool for higher-resolution extraction of the field-lattice coupling at the nanoscale applicable to other quantum materials.

Optimal map-making with singularities

In this work, we investigate the optimal map-making technique for the linear system $d=Ax+n$ while carefully taking into account singularities that may come from either the covariance matrix $C = \langle nn^t \rangle$ or the main matrix $A$. We first describe the general optimal solution, which is quite complex, and then use the modified pseudo inverse to create a near-optimal solution, which is simple, robust, and can significantly alleviate the unwanted noise amplification during map-making. The effectiveness of the nearly optimal solution is then compared to that of the naive co-adding solution and the standard pseudo inverse solution, showing noticeable improvements. Interestingly, all one needs to get the near-optimal solution with singularity is just a tiny change to the classical solution, which is designed for the case without singularity.

Hierarchical Aligned Multimodal Learning for NER on Tweet Posts

Mining structured knowledge from tweets using named entity recognition (NER) can be beneficial for many down stream applications such as recommendation and intention understanding. With tweet posts tending to be multimodal, multimodal named entity recognition (MNER) has attracted more attention. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, which can dynamically align the image and text sequence and achieve the multi-level cross-modal learning to augment textual word representation for MNER improvement. To be specific, our framework can be split into three main stages: the first stage focuses on intra-modality representation learning to derive the implicit global and local knowledge of each modality, the second evaluates the relevance between the text and its accompanying image and integrates different grained visual information based on the relevance, the third enforces semantic refinement via iterative cross-modal interactions and co-attention. We conduct experiments on two open datasets, and the results and detailed analysis demonstrate the advantage of our model.
