On optimality of constants in the Little Grothendieck Theorem

We explore the optimality of the constants making valid the recently established Little Grothendieck inequality for JB$^*$-triples and JB$^*$-algebras. In our main result we prove that for each bounded linear operator $T$ from a JB$^*$-algebra $B$ into a complex Hilbert space $H$ and $\varepsilon>0$, there is a norm-one functional $\varphi\in B^*$ such that $$\|Tx\|\le(\sqrt{2}+\varepsilon)\|T\|\|x\|_\varphi\quad\mbox{ for }x\in B.$$ The constant appearing in this theorem improves the best value known up to date (even for C$^*$-algebras). We also present an easy example witnessing that the constant cannot be strictly smaller than $\sqrt2$, hence our main theorem is `asymptotically optimal'. For type I JBW$^*$-algebras we establish a canonical decomposition of normal functionals which may be used to prove the main result in this special case and also seems to be of an independent interest. As a tool we prove a measurable version of the Schmidt representation of compact operators on a Hilbert space.

Grothendieck's inequalities for JB$^*$-triples: Proof of the Barton-Friedman conjecture

We prove that, given a constant $K> 2$ and a bounded linear operator $T$ from a JB$^*$-triple $E$ into a complex Hilbert space $H$, there exists a norm-one functional $\psi\in E^*$ satisfying $$\|T(x)\| \leq K \, \|T\| \, \|x\|_{\psi},$$ for all $x\in E$. Applying this result we show that, given $G > 8 (1+2\sqrt{3})$ and a bounded bilinear form $V$ on the Cartesian product of two JB$^*$-triples $E$ and $B$, there exist norm-one functionals $\varphi\in E^{*}$ and $\psi\in B^{*}$ satisfying $$|V(x,y)| \leq G \ \|V\| \, \|x\|_{\varphi} \, \|y\|_{\psi}$$ for all $(x,y)\in E \times B$. These results prove a conjecture pursued during almost twenty years.

Measures of weak non-compactness in preduals of von Neumann algebras and JBW$^*$-triples

We prove, among other results, that three standard measures of weak non-compactness coincide in preduals of JBW$^*$-triples. This result is new even for preduals of von Neumann algebras. We further provide a characterization of JBW$^*$-triples with strongly WCG predual and describe the order of seminorms defining the strong$^*$ topology. As a byproduct we improve a characterization of weakly compact subsets of a JBW$^*$-triple predual, providing so a proof for a conjecture, open for almost eighteen years, on weakly compact operators from a JB$^*$-triple into a complex Banach space.

Preduals of JBW$^*$-triples are 1-Plichko spaces

We prove that the predual, $M_*$, of a JBW$^*$-triple $M$ is a 1-Plichko space (i.e. it admits a countably 1-norming Markushevich basis or, equivalently, it has a commutative 1-projectional skeleton), and obtain a natural description of the $\Sigma$-subspace of $M$. This generalizes and improves similar results for von Neumann algebras and JBW$^*$-algebras. Consequently, dual spaces of JB$^*$-triples also are 1-Plichko spaces. We also show that $M_*$ is weakly Lindel\"{o}f determined if and only if $M$ is $\sigma$-finite if and only if $M_*$ is weakly compactly generated. Moreover, contrary to the proof for JBW$^*$-algebras, our proof dispenses with the use of elementary submodels theory.

Weak Banach-Saks property and Komlos theorem for preduals of JBW$^*$-triples

We show that the predual of a JBW$^*$-triple has the weak Banach-Saks property, that is, reflexive subspaces of a JBW$^*$-triple predual are super-reflexive. We also prove that JBW$^*$-triple preduals satisfy the Komlós property (which can be considered an abstract version of the weak law of large numbers). The results rely on two previous papers from which we infer the fact that, like in the classical case of $L^1$, a subspace of a JBW$^*$-triple predual contains $\ell_1$ as soon as it contains uniform copies of $\ell_1^n$.

Perturbation of $\ell_1$-copies in Preduals of JBW$^*$-triples

Two normal functionals on a JBW$^*$-triple are known to be orthogonal if and only if they are $L$-orthogonal (meaning that they span an isometric copy of $\ell_1(2)$). This is shown to be stable under small norm perturbations in the following sense: if the linear span of the two functionals is isometric up to $δ>0$ to $\ell_1(2)$, then the functionals are less far (in norm) than $\eps>0$ from two orthogonal functionals, where $\eps\to0$ as $δ\to0$. Analogous statements for finitely and even infinitely many functionals hold as well. And so does a corresponding statement for non-normal functionals. Our results have been known for C$^*$-algebras.

A conjecture of Godefroy concerning James' theorem

In this note we look at the interdependences between James' theorem and the boundary problem. To do so we show a variant of James' sup-theorem for C(K)-spaces conjectured by Godefroy: in order to know that a bounded weakly closed subset of a C(K)- space is weakly compact it is enough to test the sup-attainment only for measures with countable support.

Phillips' Lemma for L-embedded Banach spaces

In this note the following version of Phillips' lemma is proved. The L-projection of an L-embedded space - that is of a Banach space which is complemented in its bidual such that the norm between the two complementary subspaces is additive - is weak-weakly sequentially continuous.

Boundaries for Banach spaces determine weak compactness

A boundary for a Banach space is a subset of the dual unit sphere with the property that each element of the Banach space attains its norm on an element of that subset. Trivially, the pointwise convergence with respect to such a boundary is coarser than the weak topology on the Banach space. Godefroy's Boundary Problem asks whether nevertheless both topologies have the same bounded compact sets. This paper contains the answer in the positive.

A note on asymptotically isometric copies of $l^1$ and $c_0$

Nonreflexive Banach spaces that are complemented in their bidual by an L-projection - like preduals of von Neumann algebras or the Hardy space $H^1$ - contain, roughly speaking, many copies of $l^1$ which are very close to isometric copies. Such $l^1$-copies are known to fail the fixed point property. Similar dual results hold for $c_0$.

Perturbation of $l^1$-copies and measure convergence in preduals of von Neumann algebras

Let L_1 be the predual of a von Neumann algebra with a finite faithful normal trace. We show that a bounded sequence in L_1 converges to 0 in measure if and only if each of its subsequences admits another subsequence which converges to 0 in norm or spans $l^1$ "almost isometrically". Furthermore we give a quantitative version of an essentially known result concerning the perturbation of a sequence spanning $l^1$ isomorphically in the dual of a C$^*$-algebra.

L-embedded Banach spaces and measure topology

An L-embedded Banach spaace is a Banach space which is complemented in its bidual such that the norm is additive between the two complementary parts. On such spaces we define a topology, called an abstract measure topology, which by known results coincides with the usual measure topology on preduals of finite von Neumann algebras (like $L_1([0,1])$). Though not numerous, the known properties of this topology suffice to generalize several results on subspaces of $L_1([0,1])$ to subspaces of arbitrary L-embedded spaces.

Factorization of completely bounded weakly compact operators

We prove that in the setting of operator spaces the result of Davis, Figiel, Johnson and Pelczynski on factoring weakly compact operators holds accordingly. Though not related directly to the main theorem we add a remark on the description of weakly compact subsets in the dual of noncommutative vector valued ${\rm L}_1$.
