Adaptive Network Selection for Latency-Aware V2X Systems under Varying Network and Vehicle Densities

This paper presents ANS-V2X, an Adaptive Network Selection framework tailored for latency-aware V2X systems operating under varying vehicle densities and heterogeneous network conditions. Modern vehicular environments demand low-latency and high-throughput communication, yet real-time network selection is hindered by diverse application requirements and the coexistence of multiple Radio Access Technologies (RATs) such as 4G, 5G, and ad hoc links. ANS-V2X employs a heuristic-driven approach to assign vehicles to networks by considering application sensitivity, latency, computational load, and directionality constraints. The framework is benchmarked against a Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation for optimal solutions and a Q-learning-based method representing reinforcement learning. Simulation results demonstrate that ANS-V2X achieves near-optimal performance, typically within 5 to 10% of the utility achieved by MILP-V2X, while reducing execution time by more than 85%. Although MILP-V2X offers globally optimal results, its computation time often exceeds 100 milliseconds, making it unsuitable for real-time applications. The Q-learning-based method is more adaptable but requires extensive training and converges slowly in dynamic scenarios. In contrast, ANS-V2X completes decisions in under 15 milliseconds and consistently delivers lower latency than both alternatives. This confirms its suitability for real-time, edge-level deployment in latency-critical V2X systems

Active RIS-Aided Terahertz Communications with Phase Error and Beam Misalignment

Terahertz (THz) communications will be pivotal in sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks, offering significantly wider bandwidths and higher data rates. However, the unique propagation characteristics of the THz frequency band, such as high path loss and sensitivity to blockages, pose substantial challenges. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) present a promising solution for enhancing THz communications by dynamically shaping the propagation environment to address these issues. Active RISs, in particular, can amplify reflected signals, effectively mitigating the multiplicative fading effects in RIS-aided links. Given the highly directional nature of THz signals, beam misalignment is a significant concern, while discrete phase shifting is more practical for real-world RIS deployment compared to continuous adjustments. This paper investigates the performance of active-RIS-aided THz communication systems, focusing on discrete phase shifts and beam misalignment. An expression for the ergodic capacity is derived, incorporating critical system parameters to assess performance. Numerical results offer insights into optimizing active-RIS-aided THz communication systems.

Optimal Operation of Active RIS-Aided Wireless Powered Communications in IoT Networks

Wireless-powered communications (WPCs) are increasingly crucial for extending the lifespan of low-power Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Furthermore, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can create favorable electromagnetic environments by providing alternative signal paths to counteract blockages. The strategic integration of WPC and RIS technologies can significantly enhance energy transfer and data transmission efficiency. However, passive RISs suffer from double-fading attenuation over RIS-aided cascaded links. In this article, we propose the application of an active RIS within WPC-enabled IoT networks. The enhanced flexibility of the active RIS in terms of energy transfer and information transmission is investigated using adjustable parameters. We derive novel closed-form expressions for the ergodic rate and outage probability by incorporating key parameters, including signal amplification, active noise, power consumption, and phase quantization errors. Additionally, we explore the optimization of WPC scenarios, focusing on the time-switching factor and power consumption of the active RIS. The results validate our analysis, demonstrating that an active RIS significantly enhances WPC performance compared to a passive RIS.

Secrecy Performance Analysis of Integrated RF-UWOC IoT Networks Enabled by UAV and Underwater-RIS

In the sixth-generation (6G) Internet of Things (IoT) networks, the use of UAV-mounted base stations and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) has been considered to enhance coverage, flexibility, and security in non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). In addition to aerial networks enabled by NTN technologies, the integration of underwater networks with 6G IoT can be considered one of the most innovative challenges in future IoT. Along with such trends in IoT, this study investigates the secrecy performance of IoT networks that integrate radio frequency (RF) UAV-based NTNs and underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) links with an RIS. Considering three potential eavesdropping scenarios (RF signal, UOWC signal, and both), we derive closed-form expressions for secrecy performance metrics, including average secrecy capacity, secrecy outage probability, probability of strictly positive secrecy capacity, and effective secrecy throughput. Extensive numerical analyses and Monte Carlo simulations elucidate the impact of system parameters such as fading severity, the number of RIS reflecting elements, underwater turbulence, pointing errors, and detection techniques on system security. The findings offer comprehensive design guidelines for developing such a network aiming to enhance secrecy performance and ensure secure communication in diverse and challenging environments.

RIS-Assisted Wireless Communications: Long-Term versus Short-Term Phase Shift Designs

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has recently gained significant interest as an emerging technology for future wireless networks thanks to its potential for improving the coverage probability in challenging propagation environments. This paper studies an RIS-assisted propagation environment, where a source transmits data to a destination in the presence of a weak direct link. We analyze and compare RIS designs based on long-term and short-term channel statistics in terms of coverage probability and ergodic rate. For the considered optimization designs, we derive closed-form expressions for the coverage probability and ergodic rate, which explicitly unveil the impact of both the propagation environment and the RIS on the system performance. Besides the optimization of the RIS phase profile, we formulate an RIS placement optimization problem with the aim of maximizing the coverage probability by relying only on partial channel state information. An efficient algorithm is proposed based on the gradient ascent method. Simulation results are illustrated in order to corroborate the analytical framework and findings. The proposed RIS phase profile is shown to outperform several heuristic benchmarks in terms of outage probability and ergodic rate. In addition, the proposed RIS placement strategy provides an extra degree of freedom that remarkably improves system performance.

Satellite Clustering for Non-Terrestrial Networks: Concept, Architectures, and Applications

Recently, mega-constellations with a massive number of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites are being considered as a possible solution for providing global coverage due to relatively low latency and high throughput compared to geosynchronous orbit satellites. However, as the number of satellites and operators participating in the LEO constellation increases, inter-satellite interference will become more severe, which may yield marginal improvement or even decrement in network throughput. In this article, we introduce the concept of satellite clusters that can enhance network performance through satellites' cooperative transmissions. The characteristics, formation types, and transmission schemes for the satellite clusters are highlighted. Simulation results evaluate the impact of clustering from coverage and capacity perspectives, showing that when the number of satellites is large, the performance of clustered networks outperforms the unclustered ones. The viable network architectures of the satellite cluster are proposed based on the 3GPP standard. Finally, the future applications of clustered satellite networks are discussed.

Simultaneous Transmitting and Reflecting-Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface in 6G: Design Guidelines and Future Perspectives

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been considered as a promising technology for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks that can control wireless channels in a desirable way and significantly enhance the network performance. Simultaneous transmitting and reflecting-RISs (STAR-RISs) can overcome limitation of reflecting-only RISs by leveraging the higher design flexibility and full-space coverage. Despite the benefits, the modeling and analysis of STAR-RISs are complicated because of various control parameters for both transmission and reflection links. In this article, a general framework to facilitate the design and implementation of STAR-RISs in 6G scenarios and network topologies is presented. We provide a systematic introduction to the STAR-RIS operating protocols for different communication modes and discuss recent efforts to identify the research progress and combination solutions. Finally, we provide the design concepts, research challenges, potential solutions, and future directions related to the channel modeling, channel estimation, hardware implementations, modeling and limitations, and optimization.

Training Signal Design for Sparse Channel Estimation in Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Assisted Millimeter-Wave Communication

In this paper, the problem of training signal design for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication under a sparse channel model is considered. The problem is approached based on the Cram$\acute{\text{e}}$r-Rao lower bound (CRB) on the mean-square error (MSE) of channel estimation. By exploiting the sparse structure of mmWave channels, the CRB for the channel parameter composed of path gains and path angles is derived in closed form under Bayesian and hybrid parameter assumptions. Based on the derivation and analysis, an IRS reflection pattern design method is proposed by minimizing the CRB as a function of design variables under constant modulus constraint on reflection coefficients. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed design method for sparse mmWave channel estimation.

How Much Information can One Get from a Wireless Ad Hoc Sensor Network over a Correlated Random Field?

New large deviations results that characterize the asymptotic information rates for general $d$-dimensional ($d$-D) stationary Gaussian fields are obtained. By applying the general results to sensor nodes on a two-dimensional (2-D) lattice, the asymptotic behavior of ad hoc sensor networks deployed over correlated random fields for statistical inference is investigated. Under a 2-D hidden Gauss-Markov random field model with symmetric first order conditional autoregression and the assumption of no in-network data fusion, the behavior of the total obtainable information [nats] and energy efficiency [nats/J] defined as the ratio of total gathered information to the required energy is obtained as the coverage area, node density and energy vary. When the sensor node density is fixed, the energy efficiency decreases to zero with rate $Θ({area}^{-1/2})$ and the per-node information under fixed per-node energy also diminishes to zero with rate $O(N_t^{-1/3})$ as the number $N_t$ of network nodes increases by increasing the coverage area. As the sensor spacing $d_n$ increases, the per-node information converges to its limit $D$ with rate $D-\sqrt{d_n}e^{-αd_n}$ for a given diffusion rate $α$. When the coverage area is fixed and the node density increases, the per-node information is inversely proportional to the node density. As the total energy $E_t$ consumed in the network increases, the total information obtainable from the network is given by $O(\log E_t)$ for the fixed node density and fixed coverage case and by $Θ(E_t^{2/3})$ for the fixed per-node sensing energy and fixed density and increasing coverage case.

Optimal Node Density for Two-Dimensional Sensor Arrays

The problem of optimal node density for ad hoc sensor networks deployed for making inferences about two dimensional correlated random fields is considered. Using a symmetric first order conditional autoregressive Gauss-Markov random field model, large deviations results are used to characterize the asymptotic per-node information gained from the array. This result then allows an analysis of the node density that maximizes the information under an energy constraint, yielding insights into the trade-offs among the information, density and energy.

Using large deviations results that characterize the amount of information per node on a two-dimensional (2-D) lattice, asymptotic behavior of a sensor network deployed over a correlated random field for statistical inference is investigated. Under a 2-D hidden Gauss-Markov random field model with symmetric first order conditional autoregression, the behavior of the total information [nats] and energy efficiency [nats/J] defined as the ratio of total gathered information to the required energy is obtained as the coverage area, node density and energy vary.

Large Deviations Analysis for the Detection of 2D Hidden Gauss-Markov Random Fields Using Sensor Networks

The detection of hidden two-dimensional Gauss-Markov random fields using sensor networks is considered. Under a conditional autoregressive model, the error exponent for the Neyman-Pearson detector satisfying a fixed level constraint is obtained using the large deviations principle. For a symmetric first order autoregressive model, the error exponent is given explicitly in terms of the SNR and an edge dependence factor (field correlation). The behavior of the error exponent as a function of correlation strength is seen to divide into two regions depending on the value of the SNR. At high SNR, uncorrelated observations maximize the error exponent for a given SNR, whereas there is non-zero optimal correlation at low SNR. Based on the error exponent, the energy efficiency (defined as the ratio of the total information gathered to the total energy required) of ad hoc sensor network for detection is examined for two sensor deployment models: an infinite area model and and infinite density model. For a fixed sensor density, the energy efficiency diminishes to zero at rate O(area^{-1/2}) as the area is increased. On the other hand, non-zero efficiency is possible for increasing density depending on the behavior of the physical correlation as a function of the link length.
