Divided powers and K\"ahler differentials

Divided power algebras form an important variety of non-binary universal algebras. We identify the universal enveloping algebra and K\"ahler differentials associated to a divided power algebra over a general commutative ring, simplifying and generalizing work of Roby and Dokas.

Beck modules and alternative algebras

We set out the general theory of ``Beck modules'' in a variety of algebras and describe them as modules over suitable ``universal enveloping'' unital associative algebras. We develop a theory of ``noncommutative partial differentiation'' to pass from the equations of the variety to relations in a universal enveloping algebra. We pay particular attention to the case of alternative algebras, defined by a restricted associative law, and determine the Poincar\'e polynomial of the universal enveloping algebra in the homogeneous case.

The Andr\'e-Quillen cohomology of commutative monoids

We observe that Beck modules for a commutative monoid are exactly modules over a graded commutative ring associated to the monoid. Under this identification, the Quillen cohomology of commutative monoids is a special case of Andr\'e-Quillen cohomology for graded commutative rings, generalizing a result of Kurdiani and Pirashvili. To verify this we develop the necessary grading formalism. The partial cochain complex developed by Pierre Grillet for computing Quillen cohomology appears as the start of a modification of the Harrison cochain complex suggested by Michael Barr.

On a spectral sequence for the cohomology of infinite loop spaces

We study the mod-2 cohomology spectral sequence arising from delooping the Bousfield-Kan cosimplicial space giving the 2-nilpotent completion of a connective spectrum $X$. Under good conditions its $E_{2}$-term is computable as certain non-abelian derived functors evaluated at $H^*(X)$ as a module over the Steenrod algebra, and it converges to the cohomology of $Ω^\infty X$. We provide general methods for computing the $E_{2}$-term, including the construction of a multiplicative spectral sequence of Serre type for cofibration sequences of simplicial commutative algebras. Some simple examples are also considered; in particular, we show that the spectral sequence collapses at $E_{2}$ when $X$ is a suspension spectrum.

Inverting the Hopf map

We calculate the $η$-localization of the motivic stable homotopy ring over the complex numbers, confirming a conjecture of Guillou and Isaksen. Our approach is via the motivic Adams-Novikov spectral sequence. In fact, work of Hu, Kriz, and Ormsby implies that it suffices to compute the corresponding localization of the classical Adams-Novikov $E_2$-term, and this is what we do. Guillou and Isaksen also proposed a pattern of differentials in the localized motivic classical Adams spectral sequence, which we verify using a method first explored by Novikov.

The Burnside bicategory of groupoids

Several models for the Burnside bicategory of groupoids are described and shown to be equivalent. As observed by the late Gaunce Lewis, the corresponding Burnside category is additive.

Kervaire Invariant One [after M. A. Hill, M. J. Hopkins, and D. C. Ravenel]

The question of when the Kervaire invariant is nontrivial was the only question left unresolved by Kervaire and Milnor in their 1963 study of the relationship between groups of homotopy spheres and stable homotopy groups. In 2009, Mike Hill, Mike Hopkins, and Doug Ravenel resolved this question except in one dimension, by a highly innovative attack using large amounts of equivariant stable homotopy theory and small amounts of computation. The present paper is a Seminaire Bourbaki report on this work.
